Audioboots 80s Mashed 5 Arrives
By DJ Useo
At Audioboots Mashup Forum
( audioboots.com/frontpage.html ) , we like to do themed mashup compilations a few times a year. The overwhelming favorite theme once more was 1980's mashups. To be eligible for the comp, all you had to do was employ at least one 80s source of fodder. ( & you had to pass your track by the pre-release team ) The mixed offerings ( submissions, some call them ) flowed in, resulting in a collection that really "Pops". ( As the new generation says )
Co-owner Chocomang
( chocomang.org/Mashup2/ )
ably stepped up, & handled all aspects of this new 3 disc set, including producing, co-ordination, site-construction, & mixing a wonderful batch of mixes himself. The theme helped draw in an ideal group of home producers, including SMASH, rillen rudi, DJ MXR, DJ Rudec, Satis5d, & so very many more. Every contributor is an accomplished regular releaser of mashups, & worthy of following.
To give you an idea of the collected content, here's 2 videos from Xam of his included tracks:
01- "The Invisible Lion" ( Tight Fit vs Genesis )
02 - "Here I Shout At The Centerfold Again" ( J. Geils Band vs Whitesnake vs Tears For Fears )
More videos are expected. Look for links to them in the forum thread here
( audioboots.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/1973 )
The entire three disc set is available gratis from this page here
( audioboots.com/Albums/80sMashed5/ )
All past volumes are still available here
( audioboots.com/forum/index.php?p=/categories/compilations )
Here's a link to stream my NSFW preview mix,""Your Silent Monster" ( New Order vs Professor Green vs Camo & Krooked )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12975/dj-useo-your-silent-monster-new-order-vs-professor-green-vs-camo-amp-krooked- )
The combos are inspired, & the tracks are mixed with proficiency. Look for pairings like Ultravox vs Bloc Party, The Pointer Sisters vs Reba McEntire, Thomas Dolby vs The Clash, Laura Branigan vs Bee Gees, & The Cure vs The Commodores, plus a substantial additional number of rewarding blends. This isn't even the last of the Audioboots new albums, as the all French mashups comp will appear in about a week. Don't fret, I'll clue you in regarding it in next week's column. Woot!
PS. Thanks to all contributors. Your contributions are highly appreciated.

Anecdotes
Birth
• An expectant father was waiting by the delivery room, from which screams were coming. The father paced up and down, sweating and wringing his hands as he listened to the screams. Finally, the screams stopped and the physician came to him and said, “Congratulations, you are the father of a healthy baby girl.” “Thank God,” said the father. “She’ll never have to go through what I just went through.”
• Richard Wagner was happy at the birth of his son, Siegfried, and to celebrate, he wrote his Siegfried Idyll. The first person to hear it—other than the musicians who practiced it—was his wife, Cosima. Mr. Wagner brought a small orchestra of 11 men into his house, stationed them beneath a staircase that led to his wife’s bedroom, then conducted them in the music honoring the birth of his son.
• Composer Arnold Schoenberg was visiting fellow composer George Gershwin’s estate and playing tennis one day when he said, “Somehow I feel tired. I can’t understand it.” He thought a moment, then added, “That’s right. I was up at five this morning. My wife gave birth to a boy.”
• Conductor Arturo Toscanini felt that Walter, his son, was not punctual. According to Mr. Toscanini, only once was his son punctual: “I was married June 21; he was born March 21.”
Books
• Aby Warburg could have been an important banker since he was the oldest son of the famous Warburg banking family. However, he was bookish, so he entered into an agreement with Max, the second-oldest son, to allow Max to take over the banking business in return for buying Aby all the books he wanted. Aby profited immensely by the deal, acquiring 80,000 books—many of them rare and costly—during his lifetime. At one point, Aby’s house was filled to bursting with books, so his brothers decided to build him a library next door to house his collection.
• Small children know what they like, and they like to hear their favorite stories read to them over and over. After having Beatrix Potter’s Tale of Two Bad Mice read to her, Carol, Dorothy White’s daughter, said, “I love it, I love it, I love it. Again!”
• Angelica Shirley Carpenter and Jean Shirley are a daughter-and-mother writing team who collaborate on biographies by each writing a biography on the same person, then combining the two books into one volume.
Children and Teenagers
• Al Capp, creator of the comic strip Li’l Abner, was forced to use a wooden leg after falling into the path of a trolley car when he was nine years old. Of course, his limp made children curious. Often, a child would see Mr. Capp limping, then ask him what was wrong with his leg. Mr. Capp handled such situations by telling the truth, and if the child wanted to see his wooden leg, he would show it to him. Usually, that worked best, but once it didn’t work at all. He showed his leg to one boy, but the next day the boy and a friend were waiting for him, and they demanded that he show them his wooden leg. That was a little less fine, but the following day four children were waiting for him, and their leader danced around him, demanding, “Lift up your pants, and show us all your wooden leg.” Mr. Capp managed to stop further escalation by yelling at the children: “You all get the hell out of here—or I’ll kick you with it!”
• As a little girl in Honolulu, Bette Midler went to hula dancing school, where she was not the best student. In fact, her teacher put her in the back row because young Bette could not remember the movements and got by only through watching what the other young dancers were doing. At a recital, her teacher fixed young Bette’s hair, pulling it back so tightly that her eyes were slits she could barely see out of, with the result that she couldn’t watch the other young dancers and imitate them. On stage, young Bette danced, accidentally smacking into the other dancers and knocking them down, thus giving herself the prominent position of front and center. The audience laughed and roared its approval, and young Bette decided to go into show business.

To Auction
Gorgosaurus
The fossilized skeleton of a T. rex relative that roamed the earth about 76 million years ago will be auctioned in New York this month, Sotheby’s announced Tuesday.
The Gorgosaurus skeleton will highlight Sotheby’s natural history auction on July 28, the auction house said.
The specimen being sold was discovered in 2018 in the Judith River Formation near Havre, Montana, Sotheby’s said. It measures nearly 10 feet (3 meters) tall and 22 (6.7 meters) feet long.
All of the other known Gorgosaurus skeletons are in museum collections, making this one the only specimen available for private ownership, the auction house said.
Sotheby’s presale estimate for the fossil is $5 million to $8 million.

Climate Protesters
London
Climate change protesters targeted a copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” at London’s Royal Academy of Arts Tuesday, gluing themselves to the painting’s frame and spray-painting “No New Oil” next to it.
The protest, organized by supporters of the campaign group “Just Stop Oil,” came a day after two activists from the group were arrested after gluing themselves to the frame of John Constable’s “The Hay Wain” in London’s National Gallery.
On Tuesday, five activists went into the Royal Academy and attached a hand each to the frame of “The Last Supper,” a full-size copy of da Vinci’s famous 15th-century work.
The Metropolitan Police said three men and two women were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. The Royal Academy said the gallery room was closed to the public and that police were “called upon the protesters’ request.”

Second Child
Tarantinos
Quentin Tarantino and his wife Daniella have welcomed their second child together over the fourth of July weekend.
A representative for the couple confirmed the news in a statement to People on Monday (4 July).
The statement read: “Daniella and Quentin Tarantino are happy to announce that Daniella gave birth to their baby girl on 2 July, 2022, a little sister to Leo, their first child.”
The newborn’s name has not been revealed yet.
The couple currently reside in Tel Aviv.

‘Stranger Things’
“Master Of Puppets”
Metallica is officially among the fans of Stranger Things, calling the show’s use in the Season 4 finale of the band’s classic “Master of Puppets” an “incredible honor.”
In an Instagram post, the band writes, “The way the Duffer Brothers have incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level, so we were beyond psyched for them to not only include ‘Master of Puppets’ in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it. We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away.”
In the finale, Stranger Things character Eddie Munson, wielding a guitar, tears into the 1986 Metallica song in an attempt to get the attention of some demonic bats as part of the gang’s battle against the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
The use of the song certainly didn’t come as a surprise to the band, though: Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo previously posted that it was, in fact, his 17-year-old son Tye Trujillo who re-created the song’s riff for the show.

‘Full Citizenship’
Michael Moore
Filmmaker Michael Moore shared his own “declaration” on Monday, July 4, calling out the Supreme Court’s recent decision that overturned Roe vs. Wade and ended federal protection for abortion rights.
“I cannot in good conscience continue to receive the privileges of ‘full citizenship’ in this land when all of its women and girls have now been, by Court decree, declared official second-class citizens with no rights to their own bodies and conscripted to a life of Forced Birth should they fall pregnant and not want to be,” Moore shared in his Substack post on Monday.
After opening his piece by affirming his support for the values of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” he called out white supremacy.
“I refuse to live in a country threatened by white supremacy — and I’m not leaving. So we‘ve got a problem,” Moore wrote.

"Just Business"
Hitman
The man accused of detonating a car bomb that killed a prominent Maltese journalist has confessed to the crime in an interview with a Reuters reporter and says he will soon implicate others in plotting to assassinate her.
Speaking from jail in his first comment on the case, George Degiorgio said if he had known more about Daphne Caruana Galizia - the journalist he and two others are accused of killing in 2017 - then he would have asked for more money to carry out the hit.
"If I knew, I would have gone for 10 million. Not 150,000," he said, referring to the sum in euros that he said he was paid for killing the journalist.
"For me it was just business. Yeah. Business as usual!" he told a Reuters reporter. He later added, "Of course I feel sorry."
Caruana Galizia was killed after she levelled a series of corruption allegations against prominent people, including ministers in the island's Labour Party government. Her murder raised suspicions that some of the people she was investigating could be involved in plotting her death.

Gun Deaths
Japan
A recent spate of mass shootings have prompted intensified discussions around gun control in the US.
One of the biggest questions being asked: How does the US prevent this from happening over and over again?
Although the US has no exact counterpart elsewhere in the world, some countries have taken steps that can provide a window into what successful gun control looks like. Japan, a country of 127 million people and yearly gun deaths rarely totaling more than 10, is one such country.
Japan's success in curbing gun deaths is intimately linked with its history. Following World War II, pacifism emerged as one of the dominant philosophies in the country. Police only started carrying firearms after American troops made them, in 1946, for the sake of security. It's also written into Japanese law, as of 1958, that "no person shall possess a firearm or firearms or a sword or swords."
Japan has also embraced the idea that fewer guns in circulation will result in fewer deaths. Each prefecture — which ranges in size from half a million people to 12 million, in Tokyo — can operate a maximum of three gun shops; new magazines can only be purchased by trading in empty ones; and when gun owners die, their relatives must surrender the deceased member's firearms.

Over The Tropics
New Ozone Hole
A new ozone hole has been detected over Earth’s tropical regions, and it stays open year-round, which the researchers behind the findings say represents "a great global concern". Having slipped past climate scientists’ models, which are usually able to predict such phenomena, the hole is thought to have been open since the 1980s.
The tropics ozone hole was found using a combination of observational data alongside cosmic-ray-driven electron reaction models, together finding physical mechanisms above the tropics that mirror the conditions at the polar ozone hole over Antarctica.
This latest ozone hole, reported in the journal AIP Advances, is said to be seven times the size of the Antarctic ozone hole. Situated above the tropics, it subsequently puts a large volume of the global population at increased risk of developing disease.
The hole over the tropics differs from the one over Antarctica not just in its enormous size, but also in its seasonal endurance. The Antarctic ozone hole has a seasonal cycle, losing the most O3 in September and October, but this later replenishes before the cycle begins again.
By contrast, the tropics ozone hole endures throughout the seasons, meaning those beneath it face the risk of exposure to greater levels of UV radiation year-round.
