M Is For Mashup - May 15 2019
By DJ Useo
Friends came to visit last Sunday. Amazingly, they had NEVER heard mashups, let alone heard OF them. This gave me the fun of selecting which tracks they'd be exposed to first. Well, they were perplexed some, & also pleased to a high degree. To process this new sound experience, their left, & right side of their brains had to percieve together what was happening audio-wise. This is not always an easy task for newbies. In many case, the artists mixed were unknown & the comment was made, & repeated "is this a mashup, or a regular song?". Here's a fine new batch of recently released blends. It's likely you won't know the artists employed. Give them a try, & see if you can tell which type of track it is.
01 - DRA'man - "Trouble et Moi" ( Anouk vs Jacques Dutronc )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12956/anouk-vs-jacques-dutronc-trouble-et-moi )
02 - Martinn - "Arcade DGAF" ( Dua Lipa vs Duncan Laurence )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12942/arcade-dgaf-dua-lipa-vs-duncan-laurence )
03 - SMASH - "Honestly Sweet But I Like It Psycho" ( Ava Max vs Multiple Artists )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12939/honestly-sweet-but-i-like-it-psycho-ava-max-vs-multiple-artists )
04 - Star Man / YITT - star icon "Loaded City" ( Power Glove vs Starship ) star icon
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12931/-power-glove-vs-starship-loaded-city-star-man-mashup- )
05 - Grave Danger - "Broken One More Time" ( Daft Punk vs lovelytheband )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12930/quotbroken-one-more-timequot-daft-punk-vs-lovelytheband )
06 - DJ Useo - "Love Missile Bereft" ( Sigue Sigue Sputnik vs IERRP )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12900/sigue-sigue-sputnik-vs-ierrp )
So, how did that go for you? Did you notice that they began very "normally', & progressed to a more bootleg sound?
Have fun giving this "test" to your friends. I wager you'll be surprised how few of your pals even know of mashups.

Anecdotes
Patience
• A Sufi teacher spoke about the virtue of patience. As he spoke, a scorpion stung his foot repeatedly. His followers eventually noticed the scorpion and asked the teacher why he had not moved his foot away from it. The teacher replied, “I was discussing the virtue of patience. I could hardly have spoken about patience without also setting an example of patience. I would have been ashamed before God.”
• At Ferney, Voltaire played a daily game of chess with Father Adam, a Jesuit. One hopes that the father was a patient man, for when Voltaire was losing, he would overturn the board, playing the game to the end only when he was winning.
Persistence
• A man named Pen-ju came to the Buddhist priest Si-tien and said, “In my life I have tried to accomplish something remarkable, but I have failed. Can you teach me how to do something remarkable?” Si-tien agreed to teach Pen-ju, and the first task he set for him was to make a pair of sandals out of straw. After many attempts, Pen-ju succeeded in making a pair of sandals that satisfied Si-tien. Next, Si-tien told Pen-ju to stand in the mud, then walk out of the mud, and clean his sandals. In addition, he told Pen-ju to do this over and over again without stopping, except for meals and sleep. Pen-ju complained that this work was completely unnecessary, but Si-tien said that unless he did it, he would teach him nothing. After several weeks had passed, during which time Pen-ju had cleaned his sandals thousands of times, Si-tien told Pen-ju, “Before, you were unable to accomplish anything remarkable because you lacked persistence. Now you have learned persistence, so go out into the World, apply your persistence to an important task, and accomplish something remarkable.”
• Hong-su asked the Buddhist priest Si-tien, “Can you teach me how to be more persistent when confronted with a difficult task?” Si-tien replied, “Find a four-leaf clover, then bring it to me.” Hong-su searched two hours for a four-leaf clover, but he was unable to find one, so he returned to Si-tien and said, “I can’t find a four-leaf clover.” Si-tien replied, “Find a four-leaf clover, then bring it to me.” Hong-su searched the rest of the day for a four-leaf clover, but he was unable to find one, so he returned to Si-tien and said, “I can’t find a four-leaf clover.” Si-tien replied, “Find a four-leaf clover, then bring it to me.” After searching for two days, Hong-su found a four-leaf clover, and he brought it to Si-tien and asked, “Now can you teach me how to be more persistent when confronted with a difficult task?” Si-tien replied, “Bring me another four-leaf clover.”
Politics
• Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina was active back when Joe McCarthy was making it hot for anyone who believed in the Bill of Rights. He once rose in the Senate and told a story about his Uncle Ephraim going to church although he was nearly crippled by arthritis. The preacher asked various members of the church, “What has the Lord done for you?” All of the members described various good things the Lord had done for them, but when the preacher asked Uncle Ephraim, he replied, “Brother, the Lord has mighty near ruint me.” Senator Ervin then said, “And that is what Senator McCarthy has done to the Senate.”
• Hillaire Belloc was noted for his honesty. He was warned when he was running for a seat in the House of Commons that being a Catholic was a drawback and if he wanted to be elected, he should keep his religion a secret. Instead, he told the voters, “I am a Catholic. I go to Mass every day.” Taking a rosary from his pocket, he continued, “As far as possible, I kneel down and tell these beads every day. If you reject me on account of my religion, I shall thank God that He has spared me the indignity of being your representative.” The voters did not reject him — they elected him.

‘Wanton Violations’
Rupert
Fox News has agreed to pay a record-breaking $1 million fine to New York City’s human rights commission, for what the watchdog said was a “pattern of violating of the NYC Human Rights Law”, as the network struggles to reform itself amid accusations of sexual harassment and a toxic workplace culture in recent years.
As part of the settlement, the cable news behemoth will significantly curtail its use of mandatory confidential arbitration, contractual clauses which alleged victims of harassment said was used to silence complaints against former top figures at the channel like former chairman Roger Ailes.
The commission also demanded “immediate changes to policies surrounding reporting sexual harassment, retaliation, training, and compliance with the NYC Human Rights Law”, it said in a statement, and will monitor the network for two years to ensure compliance. Employees will be trained on how to identify “retaliation” against those reporting misconduct, and how to intervene in and report problems they encounter directly, according to The Daily Beast, which first reported the news on Tuesday.
The network stuck by O’Reilly longer, even as he reached settlements with five women over alleged sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour, before he too was forced out in 2017. All told, there are at least six settlement involving Mr O’Reilly over alleged harassment and abuse, totaling nearly $45 million.

Bat Girl
Gwen Goldman
Gwen Goldman exchanged fist bumps with the New York Yankees she had been admiring for decades from afar, walked onto the field and waved to the crowd.
She got to be a Yankees’ bat girl on Monday night at age 70 — a full 60 years after she was turned down because of her gender.
Shaking with excitement, she beamed while recounting how it felt to be at Yankee Stadium on this day for the game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Goldman had been rejected by then-Yankees general manager Roy Hamey, who wrote her in a letter on June 23, 1961: “While we agree with you that girls are certainly as capable as boys, and no doubt would be an attractive addition on the playing field, I am sure you can understand that it is a game dominated by men a young lady such as yourself would feel out of place in a dugout.”

Contested Election ‘Hooey’
Obama
Barack Obama has condemned Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up)’s ongoing attempts to undermine 2020 presidential election results with a warning that the former Republican president’s campaign to contest his decisive loss – based on “a whole bunch of hooey” – will continue to inspire similar attempts to discredit election outcomes.
Mr Obama, speaking to a virtual fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee with former attorney US Attorney General Eric Holder and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said that his successor’s baseless claims and conspiracy theories have legitimised other attempts from GOP officials to toss out results.
“What we saw was my successor, the former president, violate that core tenet that you count the votes and then declare a winner – and fabricate and make up a whole bunch of hooey,” Mr Obama said on 28 June.
“If we don’t stop these kinds of efforts now, what we are going to see is more and more contested elections,” he added. “We are going to see a further de-legitimising of our democracy … and a breakdown of the basic agreement that has held this magnificent democratic experiment together all these years.”

Long-Lost Painting Sold For $9.1M
Fragonard
A long-lost painting by Fragonard sold for $9 million after it was found in the possession of a family who had no idea it was a work by the French master.
Antoine Petit, an auctioneer at the Encheres Champagne auction house in Epernay, said he was called to assess a family inheritance at an apartment in Marne, and a dust-covered painting hanging on the wall caught his eye.
The experts verified the painting was A Philosopher Reading by Fragonard.
Petit said the family who owned the painting, which dates from 1768-1770, told him it had been passed down through multiple generations for about 200 years, and the current owners did not know the identity of the artist.

Brand New Type
Optical Illusion
A number of optical illusions have temporarily taken over the Internet in recent years, with the infamous Dress being perhaps the most notable example. In addition to offering an amusing distraction, these ocular deceptions also provide scientists with opportunities to learn about the nature of vision, the brain, and perception, which is why researchers have just invented a brand new illusion called "Scintillating Starburst".
Consisting of several concentric star polygons, the illustration causes viewers to perceive shimmering rays that emanate outwards from the center of the image, connecting each of the bisecting points between the various “braids”. Observing these illusory beams flicker in and out of existence is pretty trippy, and researcher Pascal Wallisch says that the image “illustrates how the brain 'connects the dots' to create a subjective reality in what we see, highlighting the constructive nature of perception.”
Describing the new illusion in the journal i-Perception, Wallisch and colleagues explain that the appearance of these fleeting bright lines may be attributed to the interplay between our central and peripheral vision. According to the study authors, the points at which braids intersect can appear to be bolder than the individual lines, and our peripheral vision lacks the resolution to discern that this is not actually the case. As such, our brains assume that these internodes represent bright spots, and fills in the gaps by drawing a bright line connecting them.
When experimenting with different variations of their illusion, the researchers found that people tended to experience the effect more intensely when they increased the width and contrast of the lines, as this enhanced the apparent brightness of the bisecting points. Adding in more polygons had a similar effect, as this created more bisections and therefore more shimmering rays.

4,400-Year-Old 'Snake Staff'
Finland
A 4,400-year-old life-size wooden snake unearthed in Finland may have been a staff used in “magical” rituals by a Stone Age shaman, according to a study released Monday.
The lifelike figurine, which was carved from a single piece of wood, is 21 inches long and about an inch thick at its widest, with what seems to be a very snake-like head with its mouth open.
It was found perfectly preserved in a buried layer of peat near the town of Järvensuo, about 75 miles northwest of Helsinki, at a prehistoric wetland site that archaeologists think was occupied by Neolithic (late Stone Age) peoples 4,000 to 6,000 years ago.
It’s unlike anything else ever found in Finland, although a few stylized snake figurines have been found at Neolithic archaeological sites elsewhere in the eastern Baltic region and Russia.
The site near Järvensuo is thought to have been on the shores of a shallow lake when it was inhabited by groups of people in the late Stone Age. Recent excavations have yielded a trove of organic remains that have enabled archaeologists to create a more complete record of the site, Koivisto said. The finds have included a wooden tool with a handle shaped like a bear, wooden paddles and fishnet floats made of pine and birch bark.
