M Is FOR MASHUP - RERUN - from July 14th, 2010
For You This Summer Will Never End
By DJ Useo
You have just hit the mashup jackpot! SUMMER BOOTY 2010 is a new 3-disc collection of all-new mashups from 32 excellent mashup producers. I personally had the thrill of arranging & producing this fantastic new collection. Can you imagine the fun I had as each new track arrived? It was so worth the investment of time & energy. I also had the joy of talking with one fine batch of human beings.
The Summer Booty mashup albums started in 2007 when I realized that many of my all-time fave songs had a discernable 'eternal summer' feeling to them. I know it's an old song, but have you ever heard the Zombies 'Time Of The Season'? When I hear that Zombies song I feel like I'm driving a convertible on a sunny beach. Hear it for youself & see what I mean. Secondly, I noticed I knew enough other mashup mixers that I reckoned we could easily get enough tracks to make the collection viable. Sure enough, SUMMER BOOTY 2007 literally shook with the summer vibe.SUMMER BOOTY 2008 & 2009 followed to even more warm reception.
When it came to SUMMER BOOTY 2010 I was more hepped than ever before. With the current pals I have & other bootleg connections, I was sure this would be the best collection yet. Still, people have their own lives & are not always available to participate in a project like this. Knowing that, I invited 56(!) different bootleggers in the hope that at least half would be able to get this comp to a generous 2 discs. Imagine my delight when so many excellent tracks came in that the project swelled to 3 discs!
The album starts with one of the best longer mixes I've heard in years. Hahnstudios' 'World Cup Mix 2010' is 20 minutes of the most exciting,sport-oriented, summery mixing you'll hear for quite a while. There's an incredible 10-minute version with video

Then, you run through an astonishingly fine collection of mashups by the likes of DJ Moule, Solcofn, A Plus D, Pomatic & so many more top mixers your head wll explode.
More videos have appeared as well. The Reborn Identity whipped up a great video version of his Michael Jackson/Goldfrappe track

DJ MashUp not only did the best Country & Western mashup I can recall, but crafted a must-see video too -

"I do believe money can be a big deciding factor in which schools get more money. I taught in an urban, inner-city school where we received much less funding per pupil than a school five minutes down the road in a wealthy area. These upper-class students had parents who were involved. Of course they are going to succeed better than my school, where the kids don't know where their next meal is coming from, except for school lunch. I believe the situation should be reversed. The schools that have a failing reputation due to low test scores need the money more than the schools who are producing high test scores and graduate rates."-Alicia

No sooner had I finished this fascinating book than I remembered the shattering scene in Irene Nemirovsky's Suite Francaise when the teenage orphans whom a fatherly priest has been shepherding to the safety of a secluded chateau suddenly turn on him like a pack of wolves and stone him to death. It is an unforgettable moment that seems to sum up all the madness of France's panic in the summer of 1940. But in its almost Jacobin ghoulishness, the event is also mysteriously implausible.

"Conan O'Brien Can't Stop" has a title of piercing accuracy. After NBC and Jay Leno pulled the rug out from under him, the comic went overnight from hosting "The Tonight Show" to being banned from television for six months. To be sure, NBC paid him $40 million in a send-off package, but the Conan O'Brien we see in the film wasn't in it for the money. He was in it because he can't stop.

NBC's "Playboy Cllub" Finds New Home
Utah
After being dumped by NBC's affiliate in Salt Lake City earlier this month, upcoming fall drama "The Playboy Club" has found a new home in the conservative Utah state capital.
The My Network affiliate KMYU will air the soapy drama, which stars Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard in a 1960s-set club where crooners, mob bosses and politicians mingle among Chicago's elite.
The move, which was first reported by TV Guide, follows a mid-June decision by KSL-TV to opt out of airing the drama because of objectionable content. At the time, the Utah station, which has ties to the Mormon Church, argued that the series didn't fit with its mission.
"The Playboy brand is known internationally," KSL president and CEO Mark Willes said in a statement. "Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand." (KSL also does not air "Saturday Night Live.")

Controversial Statue Approved
Chuck Berry
An eight-foot statue of rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry was approved on Monday over the opposition of some local residents including one who said the Hall of Fame singer/songwriter should not be honored because he is a "felon and not a friend of women."
The University City council, which has jurisdiction over the spot where the statue is to be installed, rejected a last-minute petition drive by opponents, who gathered 100 signatures in a bid to block or delay the statue.
The leader of the opposition, Elsie Glickert, an 86-year-old former city council member, said the city had ignored procedure in allowing the statue to be built on a new public bikeway that intersects the Delmar Loop, a strip of restaurants, shops and clubs that includes Blueberry Hill, where Berry has played over 160 shows in past 15 years.
The owner of the club, Joe Edwards, helped raise over $100,000 in private funding for the statue, which depicts a young Berry wailing away on his guitar. The plaza where the statue is going be installed will also feature illuminated walls with laser-engraved musical notes of "Johnny B. Goode," Berry's signature 1957 hit. Concrete strips in the sidewalk will be etched with the lyrics of Berry songs.
Edwards said the statue would be installed later this week and dedicated at a July 29 ceremony that will feature an appearance by the 84-year-old Berry.

Donating Sign
Sahara
Owners of the closed Sahara hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip say they're donating one of the property's iconic signs to the Neon Museum, a collection of Sin City's historic markers.
SBE Entertainment officials tell The Associated Press that the donation is part of celebrating the cultural significance of the casino that closed last month after 59 years.
The sign faced Sahara Avenue at the back of the casino, near a porte-cochere.
Neon Museum Chairman Bill Marion says the sign is a classic example of Las Vegas' storied past and the historic art form of neon signs.

Takes On Bachmann Over "American Girl"
Tom Petty
It's not even 2012 yet but election season is in full bloom.
And with it comes a new political ritual: First, a Republican candidate attempts to score cultural points by choosing a popular song for a political commercial or a rally. Next, a musician complains about such unauthorized use. Finally, politician says, "Sorry!"
Up first in the 2012 war is a developing dispute between singer-songwriter Tom Petty and Michele Bachmann. On Monday, Bachmann officially announced her candidacy for U.S. president. She left the stage as Petty's "American Girl" blared over the loudspeaker. Uh-oh.
Petty's camp is unhappy with Bachmann's choice of exit music and will ask the campaign not to use the song, according to an NBC News report. (Petty's manager was not immediately available for comment, an employee said.)
Petty previously sent George W. Bush a cease-and-desist letter over his presidential campaign's use of the song, "I Won't Back Down." Bush backed down, of course. But the former president is not alone.

Deported From Burma
Michelle Yeoh
The military-backed government of Myanmar Burma has deported Hollywood actress Michelle Yeoh, who stars as pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in an upcoming movie, officials said Tuesday.
The Malaysian actress arrived in the country's main city, Yangon, on June 22 and was deported the same day because she was on a blacklist, a government official said.
The official, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the press, did not say why Yeoh was on the list. But Myanmar's repressive government Burma's military dictatorship has routinely rejected visa requests of journalists and perceived critics for years.
The Luc Besson movie about Suu Kyi's life, "The Lady," is due out later this year, and Yeoh has said she hopes her portrayal of Suu Kyi will raise awareness about the Nobel Peace Prize winner's story.

Denies Japan Charity Bracelet Scam
Lady Gaga
Representatives of Lady Gaga on Tuesday denied claims of a scam over sales of the singer's wristbands for Japan's earthquake relief efforts.
They described a lawsuit targeting the pop star and other companies involved in the sale and marketing of the $5 white and red "We Pray for Japan" rubber bracelets as misguided and without merit.
"This misguided lawsuit is without merit and unfortunately takes attention away from the kind deeds of the fans around the world who are supporting the people of Japan," Gaga's representatives said in a statement.
Michigan legal network, 1800LAWFIRM, filed a lawsuit last week alleging that not all of the proceeds from the wristband sales were going to help victims of the March earthquake and tsunami, as Lady Gaga had pledged on her website. The federal class action also claimed that shipping costs were inflated.
"The entire $5 donation made with the purchase of each bracelet is going to support the disaster relief. No profit is being made on shipping costs. Sales tax charges were made in accordance with local legal requirements. Lady Gaga has personally pledged her own funds to this cause and continues to support the victims of the disaster," Tuesday's statement said.

Reaches Divorce Deal
Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson
Actor Mel "Sugar Tits" Gibson and his longtime wife have reached a deal in their two-year-old divorce case, attorneys told a Los Angeles judge on Tuesday.
The divorce deal between the "Lethal Weapon" star, who was once estimated to be worth $900 million, and his wife, Robyn, includes a settlement of property they shared. Details of the settlement were not released.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge is expected to finalize the divorce in August, Robyn's attorney's Laura Wasser said during the hearing.
Robyn Gibson filed for divorce in 2009 after 28 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair had separated days after Gibson's notorious 2006 arrest for drunk driving when he launched an anti-Semitic tirade.

Landmark Destroyed In Forks
'Twilight'
A popular spot for "Twilight" fans to have their pictures taken in Forks is gone.
The facade of Forks High School came down this month as the building is demolished to make way for a new school.
The Peninsula Daily News reports a campaign to raise $287,000 to save the 86-year-old facade raised only a few thousand dollars. It was one site in the Olympic Peninsula town visited by fans of the teen vampire-romance books and movies.
A terra cotta cornerstone and lintel reading "Quillayute High School" will be preserved in the new school.

UFO Viral Video
London
A video purportedly showing a "UFO mothership" and a "fleet" of alien spacecraft has gone viral on YouTube on June 28, two days after it was uploaded.
UFO Mothership & Fleet Over London UK 24th June 2011 has as of 9:30GMT June 28 been viewed 710,431 times after being uploaded on June 26 and is ranked second on YouTube's "most watched today charts."
The video begins with shaky footage caused by what can be assumed to be the person behind the camera running down the street to where a group of people stand filming the sky on their mobiles. The camera then turns upwards, where three shining dots can be seen passing through the sky.
The video has received some mainstream press coverage in addition to mentions on blogs specializing in UFOs. While no marketing company has yet come forward to claim responsibility for the footage, a number of similar videos have appeared on YouTube over the past few days, leading some to question if the videos are part of a viral promotional campaign.

Norma Lyon
Norma "Duffy" Lyon, whose life-size butter sculptures of cows, Elvis and even Jesus and his disciples delighted Iowa state fairgoers for nearly half a century, has died. She was 81.
Lyon suffered a stroke at her rural home Sunday and died shortly after at a hospital, Michelle Juhl, one of Lyon's nine children, said Monday.
Known to most people as the "butter cow lady," Lyon was pregnant with her seventh child when she produced her first bovine butter sculpture, a 600-pound cow, for the Iowa State Fair in 1959.
The rural Toledo housewife went on to sculpt a butter cow every year until she retired in 2006, and along the way also sculpted the likes of Garth Brooks, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Smokey Bear and other images in her 40-degree refrigerated showcase at the fair.
She picked up her penchant for sculpting while earning her veterinary science degree at Iowa State University and helping her husband with the family dairy and beef cattle operation. In the midst of her animal medicine and mammalian anatomy classes, Lyon took two sculpting classes.
The Iowa State Fair has featured a butter cow every year since 1911 as a promotion for dairy products, and Lyon got her start after working briefly under her predecessor, Earl Dutt, whose work didn't overly impress her.
"It was a good farm cow, but it wasn't a show cow," Lyon told The Associated Press in 1999.
While Lyon wasn't the genesis of the butter cow, she did expand the medium during her time as a butter sculptor for the state fair, much to the delight of fairgoers.
She began carving companion pieces in 1984, starting with a horse and foal. In 1996, Lyon recreated Iowa artist Grant Woods' "American Gothic," the famous painting of a stern-faced man and woman with a pitchfork in front of a farm house.
The following year, Lyon suffered a stroke, but recovered in time to sculpt the traditional cow and a 6-foot likeness of Elvis Presley that saw fairgoers lined up around the building that housed it.
In 1999, Lyon took on what was arguably her most ambitious project: Her own rendition of the biblical story of the Last Supper, featuring disciples around a table leaning back on lounge chairs while Jesus stood at the head of the table with his arms stretched out, looking toward the heavens.
Lyon also garnered attention in 2007, when she publicly backed Barack Obama for president and appeared in campaign ads for him.
Lyon is survived by her husband, G. Joe Lyon, her nine children, 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
