From my perspective, the winter stayed far too long & I have no patience for Spring, so let the Summer begin!
In mashupland Summer is marked by the new SUMMER BOOTY bootleg music complilation. This year again the release features over twenty international home producers doing the thing they do best. Starting with the musical premise of 'a bootleg, remix,or mashup' that evokes the feeling of the endless summer, perhaps a hot day's drive in a convertible while the stereo blasts, they more than delivered. From the opening track submitted by UK's popular mixer The Geez & the immediate release of a video to accompany, it was clear the Summer mood prevailed.

Quickly, more tracks arrived from various well-known DJ's & soon tracks like Liam Nicklen's "Sneaky Exhale" (Liam Nicklen vs Sneaky Sound System) & Pomatic's "Summertime Blown" (Beyonce vs. Snoop Dogg vs. Diddy & Notorious B.I.G.) were filling out the upcoming release. Fast-rising mashup star, Virtual DJ, did his magic on Shakira & the Thievery Corporation & before you could say 'bastard pop,' the instant classic "Lebanese Thieves Don't Lie" was ready to burn itself into your memory.
More videos came quickly in the form of Alpha1999's "Faith Be Dub To Me (George Michael vs Beats International) [youtube.com/watch?v=FjFzNybyJ3I&feature=user] an amazingly appealing track will get caught between your ears, & not easily dislodged, as if you'd want that. Pomatic's track yielded a
super video hand-made by the ever-talented Guttorm [youtube.com/watch?v=BoFROkrPvYs&feature=user].
All set a tone that inspired, so soon the entire collection was at hand. An assortment of such Summer potency that you will all want to re-play till snow returns.
In the finest SUMMER BOOTY tradition, there's a seamless one-hour mix containing both discs. This years' long mix features the return of DJ Petrushka & her strong hand at joining wildly disparate musical styles. It's a needed talent when dealing with a collection like SUMMER BOOTY 2008. In her own words she says "I love music very much, and these tracks had me loving them. When I play them I feel like I've got my Ray Bans on, I've got my foot to the floorboard, & the wind & the music is whooshing past my head".
Don't miss tracks by the above-mentioned, DJ Spider, Simon Iddol, Miss Frenchie, Cheekyboy, Voicedude, Supakon (catches breath), DJ M.i.F, DJ Fac, MP3J, Aekon, DJ Morgoth, DJ Magnet, DJTopcat, Corrupt DJ's, Dottysmash, Mad Martigan, & me, DJ Useo. A line-up so good I'll say it 2wice. lol
Thanks to Alpha1999 for his amazing art direction.
Thanks to DJ Petrushka for helping with day to day planning.
Thanks to all the bootleggers who gave of their time & energy.
& thanks to the label stars who make it all possible with the world's great pop music.

MEL WATKINS: George Carlin, 71, Irreverent Standup Comedian, Is Dead (nytimes.com)
George Carlin, the Grammy-Award winning standup comedian and actor who was hailed for his irreverent social commentary, poignant observations of the absurdities of everyday life and language, and groundbreaking routines like "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television," died in Santa Monica, Calif., on Sunday, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He was 71.
DAVID HINCKLEY: Comic pioneer George Carlin dies at 71 (nydailynews.com)

RICHARD K. VEDDER: Colleges Should Go Beyond the Rhetoric of Accountability (chronicle.com)
A growing chorus of critics - legislators, governors, alumni, students, parents, trustees, and others - is pressuring colleges to increase "accountability" and "transparency." The critics want colleges to measure whether they are actually achieving their core missions, especially educating undergraduates, and to give people the facts about what they find.
Ben Baker: Time to Add Basket Weaving as a Course (irascibleprofessor.com)
A South Georgia Board of Education recently considered a policy that would set the minimum grade for averaging purposes at 60. In this particular school system anything below a 70 is considered a failing grade, so for transcript and report card purposes no grade below 60 could be awarded.
20 QUESTIONS: Alan Cumming (popmatters.com)
I'd like to go back to 30 A.D. and find out if Jesus was really married to Mary Magdalene. I'd ask him lots of questions, including about his viewpoint on GLBT people. Then I'd ask him to sign a written statement testifying to his beliefs about God's children. Then I would come back to the present and show his statement to all those nasty Christians who profess that bigotry in His Name is acceptable and say "Na na na na NA!"

Well, on first glance, "The Asian Slipper" sure sounds like something one would find on the menu at a Nevada Whore House, to me. But, as a proud member of the local Garden Club, I know it's more commonly know as the, "Lady's Slipper Orchid" or (Rare Orchid, D).

If Barack Obama ever planned to show up to Tuesday's BET Awards, he'd have done well to prepare for a roasting by host D.L. Hughley.
"He does look like the dude from 'Mad' magazine," Hughley joked of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in an interview with AP Television. "It's so funny because he ain't a cool dude to me. He's like a tall Urkel dude (the bespectacled nerd from the '90s sitcom 'Family Matters'). But for the first black president, I'll take him. ... Like, how bad a president is George Bush, when the country goes, 'You know, we'll try the black guy'?"
Hughley didn't reserve his barbs for just the Democrats.
"And then you've got John McCain. And it's so funny, because you've got a guy who's half-black running against a guy who's half-dead."
In a tribute to irreverent comedian George Carlin who died this week, cable television network HBO said on Tuesday that it will air encore specials of more than 30 years of his comedy shows starting this week.
Carlin began giving performances on HBO as far back as 1977, almost since the network's inception, and the network will air the first "George Carlin at USC" as well as the final "It's Bad for Ya."
"(No) performer was more committed to the ideal of freedom of speech, a principle he embodied for the 50 years he performed with his trademark wit," HBO Entertainment Senior Vice President Nancy Geller said in a statement.
With three days to go before Glastonbury there are still tickets available, an unusual situation for the annual celebration of pop music and mud which many people blame on this year's controversial line up.
Armed with wellington boots and enough toilet paper to last four days, 134,000 fans will pitch tents and share 3,000 temporary toilets on a 400-acre dairy farm in southwest England.
There they will hope to catch performances from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Leonard Cohen and Jay-Z over the three-day event.
The usual excitement that surrounds the festival, which started in 1970 when entry cost just one pound. Tickets to Glastonbury this year cost 160 pounds ($314) including booking fee.
Claude Monet's painting "Le Bassin aux Nympheas" sold for 40.9 million pounds (51.7 million euros, 80.5 million dollars) at an auction in London on Tuesday, smashing the previous record auction price for the artist's work.
"Le Bassin aux Nympheas" greatly exceeded its pre-sale estimate, which Christie's had pegged at between 18 and 24 million pounds.
Monet painted the masterpiece at his home in Giverny in 1919, and it is one of four that he signed and dated that year. Of the other three, one is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, another has been divided, while the third is in private hands.
Another highlight of Tuesday's auction was the sale of "Danseuse a la barre", a pastel by Edgar Degas, which sold for 13.5 million pounds, compared to its pre-sale estimate of between four and six million pounds.

John McCain's model for ginning up the economy isn't Keynesian or Milton Friedmanite. It's EBay Inc.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee regularly asserts that 1.3 million people worldwide ``make a living off EBay.'' He holds up the figure as evidence the world's largest Internet auctioneer is a model for job and economic growth.
This affection for EBay as an engine for job creation, however, confounds economists such as Betsey Stevenson, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia.
Even Meg Whitman, EBay's former chief executive who is now a McCain campaign co-chairwoman, sounds a note of caution about the 1.3 million figure, saying it includes those whose primary and secondary sources of income come from the online auctioneer. McCain, an Arizona senator and kept man, doesn't always make that distinction.
Don Imus said Tuesday morning on his radio show that he was trying to "make a sarcastic point" with his latest on-air remarks about race, but that they had been misunderstood.
On Tuesday he said he was following the spirit of that promise by calling attention to the unfair treatment of blacks - in this case the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones.
"What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason," Imus said Tuesday. "I mean, there's no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but everyone does something once."
WABC and Citadel Broadcasting Corp. Vice President Phil Boyce said Monday that it was unlikely the broadcasters would take disciplinary action against Imus.

The New York businessman known in the hip-hop world as "Jacob the Jeweler" was sentenced Tuesday to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for lying to investigators looking into a multistate drug ring.
Jacob Arabov, 43, pleaded guilty in October to falsifying records and giving false statements as part of a deal with federal prosecutors, who asked U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn to impose a minimum sentence of three years and one month.
But Cohn decided to shave off seven months from that recommendation, citing Arabov's extensive charity work.
Cohn also ordered the Russian immigrant to pay a $50,000 fine and to make a $2 million forfeiture payment to the government.
An Italian businessman who once dated lived with actress Anne Hathaway for the last 4 years was arrested Tuesday on charges he posed as a representative of the Vatican to fleece wealthy investors in a real estate company that sought to buy and redevelop Roman Catholic Church property.
Prosecutors allege that Raffaello Follieri, 29, improperly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars obtained from investors on a lavish lifestyle, including privately chartered jet travel with his girlfriend and others, expensive meals and clothing and a posh Manhattan apartment.
The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan alleges that Follieri duped a partner into investing millions of dollars in a real estate scheme to buy properties at bargain prices from the Catholic church in the United States and redevelop them.
The partner, a private equity firm in California, was not identified in court papers. However, a division of supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. has settled lawsuits accusing Follieri of misappropriating more than $1 million to support a fancy lifestyle.

U.S. resident George W. Bush's Justice Department improperly injected politics into hiring programs, a department investigation released on Tuesday found.
A report by the department's inspector general and office of professional responsibility said members of a screening committee were asked to weed out "wackos" and ideological "extremists" who sought work in a competitive honors program for entry-level attorneys or as summer interns.
The study said problems were notable in 2002, under Attorney General John Ashcroft, and in 2006, under Alberto Gonzales, a longtime ally of Bush who resigned last year under pressure over charges the department improperly ousted U.S. attorneys for political reasons.
