Eternal Summer Mashups Return
By DJ Useo
Aside from the funny mashup series I didm 'It Is To Laff', I get asked most about the SUMMER BOOTY mashup series of compilations. People want to know when the next LAFF album is coming out, sure, but they REALLY want to know when the 5th annual SUMMER BOOTY rekkid hits the net. After that they want to know 'where are the links for SUMMER BOOTY 2007?'. It was hosted on the old Beat-Boot-Ique forum's servers, you see, & when that forum folded they took the links with them. Luckily, since I oversaw the assembling of the whole collection I had all the original wavs, the art, & the text. I finally got motivated recently & pulled out the 5 year old files & re-mastered them. NOW they sound WONDERFUL!
Yeah, I admit it, when the first SUMMER BOOTY was released, we didn't bother to do a final mastering. Totally a mistake, as I recall hearing even back then. Ever since, I've taken the time to level, & re-master all tracks on every comp. (Except the large handful of tracks that just don't need it due to production excellence on the part of the mixers, like MarcJohnce, that cat has it going on.) I had enjoyed the SUMMER BOOTY 2007 comp lots as it has great peeps mixing onnit like NORWEGIAN RECYCLING, MISS FRENCHIE, DJ MORGOTH & many more who have since gone on to wide acclaim, but this new version hits on all cylinders. If I remember correctly, the original tracks started with loud songs & decreased in volume as each side progressed. Now, after being remastered, the volume & sound quality never lets up. I know you won't have the original mix to compare the remaster to, but in every way the sound is stronger, wider, & warmer.
The tracklist is the same, though. Since I don't dare list the artists whose work is 'wrecked' on my blog, allow me to give you a full glimpse of the SUMMER BOOTY 2007 playlist -

That's some 3 (!!) discs, eh? I was only shooting for 2 back then, but I remember the BBI Admin asked me to push it to 3. A good start to a fine semi-tradition. Back in 2007 I always drew, or hand-crafted all my covers, so when it came to the SUMMER BOOTY covers, we had a thread on BBI inviting peeps to offer up their own cover ideas. 3 were so good, we went with a diff cover for each disc. You can see all three, one in each of the folders .I've had the links available on my GROOVY TIME blog for over a week without the time to post them around to the usual haunts, yet they pulled in very good download numbers with no letup between the 3 discs. People sure know what they like. The best news out of all this is that this 2007 Remaster is only meant to wet your mashup appetite for the all-new SUMMER BOOTY 2011 album that comes out on the Summer Solstice June 21st. I've heard many of the tracks already & it's going to be such a GREAT ALBUM! Invited to fulfill the promise of a mashup that sounds like eternal Summer, mixers from across the globe are finding it a finestkind motivation for mixing.

Mix Of The Week
Here's this week's mix assignment! Using itunes, load a little over an hour of your music faves, set the itunes preferences to 'fade' all tracks to the most seconds possible (usually 12) & if you like the results, send me an mp3 of it. (At least 160 kbps, please) I'll post the best amateur mix you send here next week! Have fun! Write if you need help!

Mashup Tip : When mixing don't pass the center beat meridian if there's a solid white line. A big truck would likely flatten you & your entire track.

Building this bridge would create jobs and ease traffic snarls, but it would compete with a corporate-owned toll bridge - and the Koch's virulently oppose all things public. To stir-up public opposition, AFP went into a hard-hit Detroit neighborhood and plastered people's homes with official looking flyers that declared in bold type: "Eviction Notice."

Attracts Young Adult Viewers
Keith Olbermann
Current TV is celebrating Keith Olbermann's debut performance.
According to Nielsen Co. ratings, Olbermann's new "Countdown" drew 179,000 viewers age 25 to 54, the young adult demographic favored by advertisers. Figures for total viewers in the 8 p.m. EDT Monday hour were not immediately available.
In comparison, "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News Channel had 735,000 young adult viewers. On MSNBC, Olbermann's replacement, Lawrence O'Donnell, drew 237,000 such viewers, while CNN's Eliot Spitzer had 89,000.
In a statement, Current TV said it was happy with the show's start. Olbermann pronounced himself pleased but cautioned that "Countdown" needs time to settle in.

The 'Too Quick' Tweet & Facebook Censorship
Roger Ebert
Roger Ebert says he was "probably too quick to tweet" when he posted on Twitter about "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn, who died in a fiery car crash.
Ebert tweeted that "friends don't let jackasses drink and drive." The message prompted a landslide of posts on Ebert's Facebook page. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago movie critic posted a message from Facebook early Tuesday saying his page was removed for violating Terms of Use.
Ebert responded, asking Facebook on Twitter why his page was removed. He wrote that it "makes you look bad."
A few hours later, Ebert tweeted that his Facebook page was "back online." Facebook apologized and says Ebert's page was "removed in error."

Sold For $16M
Stradivarius Violin
A Japanese music foundation has sold a renowned Stradivarius violin for $16 million at a London auction to raise money for tsunami disaster relief.
The nonprofit Nippon Foundation said Tuesday the proceeds from selling the nearly 300-year-old violin known as the Lady Blunt will go to relief projects in northern Japan.
The group's music affiliate owned the violin made in 1721 and hardly used. The new owner was not identified.
Foundation spokesman Hideo Fukuda said the group plans to use the proceeds to support and promote traditional arts in the region.

Factures Toe But Continues Tour
Aretha Franklin
"Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin has added a new kind of sole to her performances.
The "Respect" singer last week fractured the big toe of her left foot on a favorite Jimmy Choo shoe and is now singing her brand of soul music in hospital-issued footwear, her representative said on Tuesday.
Grammy-winner Franklin had just played a private show in Dallas when she returned to the hotel and stumbled over the designer shoe, which was on the floor because she was packing, said Tracey Jordan, a spokeswoman for the singer.
The heel of the shoe "wrapped around" Franklin's big toe on her left foot, Jordan said.
A few days later, while on concert tour, Franklin went to a hospital in Indiana where she was told the toe was fractured, and she was given a wooden shoe with blue cloth to support the injured foot.

The Grammys are set for Feb. 12, 2012.
Both events will air live from Los Angeles.

Apology In Nashville
Tracy Morgan
Comedian Tracy Morgan delivered a personal apology Tuesday to gay advocacy groups and Tennessee audience members who were offended by an anti-gay rant during his show there earlier this month.
Morgan met with the gay rights advocates and some attendees of the June 3 show before addressing reporters at the Nashville Convention Center. He did not take questions.
"I don't have a hateful bone in my body," he said. "I don't believe that anyone should be bullied or just made to feel bad about who they are."
It's the second public apology from the "30 Rock" actor. He met with homeless lesbian and gay youth Friday in New York City. Morgan agreed to the Nashville meeting at the request of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation President Jarrett Barrios.
The former "Saturday Night Live" cast member is known for an outrageous, unpredictable comedy style where few subjects are taboo. He's tackled homosexual themes and characters before with little outcry. But even Morgan admits he went too far during his June 3 show at Ryman Auditorium.

Fighting Extradition
Bruce Beresford-Redman
A reality television producer charged with killing his wife in Mexico will ask a U.S. federal judge to allow the couple's 6-year-old daughter to testify at an upcoming extradition proceeding, his attorneys said Tuesday.
They want the young girl to be allowed to testify that she did not see her parents arguing while on a family vacation in April 2010 that ended with the body of Monica Beresford-Redman being found in a sewer at a swank Cancun resort.
Attorneys for ex-"Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman acknowledge that getting the girl on the witness stand is a long-shot. But attorneys Richard Hirsch and Vicki Podberesky said at a news conference Tuesday outside their law offices that a federal judge should allow them to present witnesses and evidence that exonerate the producer in his wife's killing.
The girl, who was 5-years-old at the time of her mother's death, was interviewed by a child therapist who states in court filings that the girl did not witness any violence involving her parents in their hotel room. Prosecutors contend Bruce Beresford-Redman may have killed his wife in the room they shared with their two young children, then dumped her in a sewage cistern.

Ex-Dior Designer On Trial
John Galliano
Former Dior designer John Galliano will face his accusers at his trial this week on charges he hurled racial insults to three patrons at a Paris cafe, allegations that shocked the fashion world and cost him his job.
He's charged with "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" and could face up to six months in prison and (EURO)22,500 ($32, 175) in fines. The verdict is expected at a later date.
A couple contended that the British designer made anti-Semitic insults at them in February, and another woman then came forward with similar claims of insults in October.
Galliano said he was "seeking help" for personal failures. An alcohol test showed he was inebriated.

Teacher Sues Author
'Three Cups of Tea'
Efforts to start a class-action lawsuit against "Three Cups of Tea" author Greg Mortenson in Montana now include Illinois.
Former teacher Deborah Netter of Lake County filed suit this month in Illinois federal court against Mortenson, his coauthor and publisher seeking damages and class action status.
The lawsuits in Illinois and Montana cite media reports from "60 Minutes" and author Jon Krakauer alleging Mortenson lied in the book about how he became involved in building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
According to the lawsuit, Netter wants compensation "for herself and all other individuals or entities, who purchased `Three Cups of Tea' and did not get what they paid for, but instead, were wrongly induced by each of the defendants to buy a phony and fictional story as opposed to the truth."

Fugitive Hip-Hop Mogul Arrested
James Rosemond
A fugitive hip-hop mogul recently linked by a convicted killer to a shooting that wounded Tupac Shakur was arrested Tuesday in a drug case after he was discovered hiding out at a popular Manhattan hotel.
Drug Enforcement Administration agents and deputy U.S. Marshals arrested James Rosemond on charges he ran a lucrative drug-trafficking ring. According to criminal complaint, the ring smuggled large amounts of cocaine into the New York City area and the proceeds back to Los Angeles in road cases normally used by musicians to transport their instruments and other equipment.
Authorities said Rosemond, 46, had been holed up at the W New York in Union Square under a false name. He was ordered held without bail during a brief appearance Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn.
The arrest follows accusations reported last week by AllHipHop.com that Rosemond - CEO of New York City-based Czar Entertainment - orchestrated the mid-1990s ambush of Shakur outside a Manhattan recording studio.
The allegations were attributed to Dexter Isaac, who is serving a life sentence in an unrelated murder-for-hire plot. The website said he claimed he was paid $2,500 to rob and shoot the legendary rapper.

Jury Deliberating Arizona Sweat Lodge Case
James Arthur Ray
Jurors on Tuesday began deliberating the fate of a self-help author facing three counts of manslaughter following a deadly sweat lodge ceremony he led in Arizona.
The jury is considering whether James Arthur Ray was aware of, and consciously disregarded, a substantial and unjustifiable risk of death in the October 2009 ceremony near Sedona.
A conviction on all three manslaughter counts could send Ray to prison for more than 37 years. A lesser charge of negligent homicide would cut the maximum sentence to about 11 years. Ray would be eligible for probation under both charges.
The trial began more than three months ago and has included hundreds of exhibits and countless hours of testimony. Prosecutors called about three dozen witnesses, and the defense had two people testify to support its argument that toxins possibly contributed to the deaths of Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn.; James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee; and Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y.

Cancels Entire Tour
Amy Winehouse
British singer Amy Winehouse, whose career has been blighted by alcohol and drug abuse, has canceled all her scheduled concerts after she was jeered by fans in Serbia recently for a shambolic performance.
Winehouse, 27, sporting her trademark bouffant hairdo and figure-hugging dress, struggled to perform her songs and keep her balance at the gig in the Serbian capital Belgrade, and on some tunes the audience did most of the singing.
The tour had been scheduled to wind up on August 4 in Portugal.
The news is a major setback for the artist and her entourage. Only three weeks ago she checked out of a rehab clinic and confidently looked forward to her upcoming tour.

Biased Judge
Penn Jillette
Magician and Miss USA judge Penn Jillette says he's happy a pageant queen from Tennessee fell short to Miss California USA Alyssa Campanella because her onstage answer to a question about burning Qurans ran afoul of the First Amendment.
The vocal half of illusionist duo Penn and Teller said on Twitter that he's glad to have helped Miss Tennessee USA Ashley Durham lose the Miss USA competition on Sunday night. Campanella will represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant in September in Brazil, while Durham placed second.
"She negated the whole First Amendment," Jillette said in a tweet Sunday night. "Glad to help her lose."
He further said that Durham was fine in expressing disdain for religious burnings but shouldn't have advocated taking away freedoms.

Controller Halts Lawmakers Pay
California
California's controller took the rare step Tuesday of halting paychecks for all 120 state lawmakers after he determined they failed to meet a voter-approved requirement aimed at getting the Legislature to approve balanced budgets on time.
Controller John Chiang said he reviewed the budget approved last week by Democrats on a simple majority vote and determined it was not balanced. Chiang, a Democrat, said lawmakers therefore did not meet the requirement for getting paid under Proposition 25, which voters approved in November.
Lawmakers can start receiving their salaries and expenses again once they pass a balanced budget. They will not be retroactively paid for the days the budget was late.
The decision sparked sharp criticism from fellow Democratic lawmakers and could be challenged in court. Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Los Angeles, said Chiang decided to withhold pay for political reasons.
Under Proposition 25, lawmakers don't get their salary or living expenses if they miss their budget deadline of June 15 each year. The measure gives the state controller the authority to judge whether revenues matched or exceeded state spending.
