M Is FOR MASHUP - June 20th, 2012
The All-New 6th Annual SUMMER BOOTY Mashup Album
By DJ Useo
It's amazing how things come full circle. I started doing the yearly Summer mashup album series 'SUMMER BOOTY' when DJ Petrushka made a point to me about how some songs evoke a feeling of 'Eternal Summer'. She played me a set of tracks she said gave her the feeling of baking on a sunny beach, or racing along in a convertible while hot breezes blow through your hair. The next thing I knew she got excited & yelled out "What if you made a mashup album of songs like these that make you feel like Summer". We both got enthused at that concept, & I went ahead & arranged just such a collection. The result was awesome!
The 2nd year I was amazed again when many of the same mashup producers approached me about a sequel. A few mixers who weren't even on the first one asked to be included. That's how it's gone every year since. People even send me tracks before I announce we're doing another. This seems a good time to mention that in my tiny little mind, I didn't realize there was a regular,
incredible mashup concert called 'BOOTIE'. (The first club night in the United States dedicated solely to mashups and bootlegs, and is now the biggest all-mashup party in the world
( bootiemashup.com/blog/ ) ) Luckily, I didn't offend A PLUS D, the sponsors of 'BOOTIE' & last year they even contributed a killer mashup for 'SUMMER BOOTY'.
Well, this year, tragedy struck after I sustained serious spine injury after a fall. There was no way I'd be able to devote the time & energy to do a new 'SUMMER BOOTY'. That's when the entire project completed the aforementioned circle & DJ Petrushka offered to step in & do much of the wrangling necessary to complete such a work. Lucky me! Lucky you! So, I turned over all my detailed contact info & instructions for how to make sure mistakes don't ruin everyone's efforts. Now, here we are, the full album is done. All you got'ta do is go to
this link & obtain the download links for discs one & two of 'SUMMER BOOTY 2012'.
To ease the burden on DJ Petrushka, we restricted the compilation to only 2 mashups per producer. This kept the size to only 2 discs, when it could easily have been 3 or 4 discs. The huge drawback was when some hugely-talented mashup artist would send us 3 tracks & tell us to choose the 2 we want. We nearly caved every time just barely being able to resist throwing out the 2-track restriction. Now, though, the record is finished. It features incredibly appealing mixes from past 'SUMMER BOOTY' faves like Voicedude, Hahnstudios, & DJ MXR. Then there's plenty of great new folk like Oki, Tweylo & DJ Flashard. There's all kinds of styles, yet each successfully conveys the full vibe of eternal Summer.

Load your mp3 players & head out into the heat & brightness. You'll have an enhanced Summer experience. If past events hold true, you'll experience folks coming up to you out of the blue asking "What is that incredible music you're playing?!" Huge gracias to DJ Petrushka for contributing her energy towards this goal. The results are AWESOME! Now, I need only fear her bill for services, lmao.
Mix Of The Week
I hope Mixmag doesn't mind me swimming in their wake, but this weeks 'mix of the week' is one they featured previously. '
Plump DJs DJ mix' is too good to exist, in all truth, but it does! It's got David Guetta, Dizzy Rascal, & lots more Plump DJs work. I replay this one often. You will too, if
you go here -

Mashup Tip : Zip your tracks up for release & don't mention the artists used in the mix in the title of the zip.
Latest Useo Thing
'Give and Take Sad Vacation' (The Dandy Warhols vs Netsky) is a combination of The Dandy Warhols new song 'Sad Vacation' & Netskys latest track 'Give And Take'. Usually, I hear grumbling that I use older artists to mix with. With this one, some people are saying "Hey! I don't know those songs, they're too new!

'Vagina Monologues'
A state lawmaker who says she was barred from speaking in the Michigan House because Republicans objected to her saying "vagina" during debate over anti-abortion legislation performed "The Vagina Monologues" on the Statehouse steps - with a hand from the author.
Eve Ensler, whose groundbreaking play about women's sexuality still packs theaters 16 years after it debuted, oversaw Monday night's performance by Democratic state Rep. Lisa Brown, 10 other lawmakers and several actresses.
Capitol facilities director Steve Benkovsky estimated about 2,500 spectators - women and men - watched the play in downtown Lansing from lawn chairs and blankets. Billed on Facebook as the "Vaginas Take Back the Capitol!" event, the combination play and protest included political signs and chants of "Vagina! Vagina!"
Ensler, who flew in from California, where she's overseeing production of her new play, said she was thrilled to be involved and likened the punishment meted out by the Republican leadership of the state House to "the Dark Ages."
"We're talking about the silencing of women, we're talking about censoring people for saying a body part," she said. "Half of these people who are trying to regulate vaginas, they can't even say the word."

Study Shows Who Won
Health Care
Opponents of President Barack Obama's health care plan decisively beat supporters in getting their message across through the media, according to a study released Tuesday.
The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism said opponents won, in part, because their positions were sharper and easier to understand. Critics also more frequently drove the coverage, particularly when Tea Party demonstrations came to the fore.
"It was really striking," said Tom Rosenstiel, the project's director. "It wasn't close."
Pew studied a 10-month period that ended on March 31, 2010, on various platforms including network and cable news, newspaper, magazines and online publications. It found the three main themes expressed by opponents - that the plan called for further government involvement, it raised taxes and rationed health care - were mentioned some 18,181 times.
Terminology used by supporters to convey that the legislation increased marketplace competition, insured more pre-existing conditions and combatted greedy insurance industry practices received 10,883 mentions, Pew said.

Performs In Prague
Pussy Riot
Anti-Kremlin, punk-rock band Pussy Riot gave a typically impromptu performance in Prague on Tuesday in support of three of its members detained since March for singing a protest song against Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral.
Wearing the band's trademark brightly colored balaclavas in line with a pledge of anonymity, the women unrolled a large three-part red banner demanding "Free Pussy Riot" above a bustling, pedestrianised street.
Pussy Riot was part of a protest movement against Putin's 12-year rule that at its peak saw 100,000 people take part in a wave of street protests in Moscow. It was also seen as a challenge to the Church over its involvement in politics.
One of the women, who declined to reveal her name, said the performance was a tribute to fellow band members awaiting a decision by a Russian court on Wednesday on whether to extend their custody without bail for another two months.

Fast Action May Help Save Painting
Picasso
Within minutes of a vandal spray painting a Pablo Picasso painting, Houston museum officials had rushed the valuable artwork into their onsite conservation lab as if it was an injured patient in need of emergency surgery.
"I think that's a dramatic analogy, but I think that's apt," said Vance Muse, a spokesman for the Menil Collection, which owns the more than 80-year-old painting.
The fast action increased the odds of saving the painting, Muse said. The museum's chief conservator has been working on it tirelessly since it was damaged June 13, and the restoration is going very well, he added.
The act of vandalism was caught in a 24-second video posted on YouTube. It shows a man dressed in black holding a stencil up to the work of art and then spray-painting the stencil before ripping it away and walking off. An image of a bullfighter, a bull and the word "conquista," which is Spanish for conquest, is left behind.
Once the man walks away, the person taking the video walks up to the painting, recording the damage. This, plus the fact that the witness happened to film the vandal at the moment he damaged the painting, has some speculating whether the two were working together.

Ex-Management Exec Charged With Theft
Pearl Jam
A man who worked as the chief financial officer for Pearl Jam's management company has been charged with 33 counts of theft.
In charges filed earlier this month, 54-year-old Rickey Charles Goodrich, of Navato, Calif., is accused of using his position with Curtis Inc. to bilk the grunge rock band out of $380,000 from 2006 until he was fired in September 2010.
The seattlepi.com reports Goodrich declined to comment Tuesday. He's expected to enter a plea at his June 28 arraignment in King County Superior Court.
Prosecutors say Goodrich transferred money from company accounts to pay debts and personal expenses including family vacations and wine.

Photographer Problem
Alec Baldwin
Another anger mismanagement allegation has arisen against Alec Baldwin, this time on his way to the altar.
A newspaper photographer filed a complaint with police on Tuesday accusing the "30 Rock" star of punching him outside a marriage license bureau.
No charges had been filed, and the actor vehemently denied throwing any punches.
Daily News photographer Marcus Santos said that Baldwin became enraged as he and other photographers were snapping pictures of the 54-year-old actor and his fiancee, Hilaria Thomas, outside the lower Manhattan office where marriage licenses are obtained.
Santos told the newspaper, "I knew he was going to attack me. I stepped back, and he kept coming." He claimed the actor shoved him before punching him "one time, right in the chin."

Susan Tyrrell
Oscar-nominated actress Susan Tyrrell, known for roles in offbeat films including John Waters' "Cry-Baby," has died. She was 67.
Tyrrell died Saturday in her sleep at home in Austin, her niece told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Tyrrell, who received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role as barfly Oma in John Huston's 1972 boxing movie "Fat City," appeared in more than 75 movies and television shows.
"She had a larger than life personality," said David Zellner, who directed Tyrrell in the movie "Kid-Thing," which is currently making the rounds at film festivals. "She had more adventures and experiences in her life than most anyone I know."
Her niece, Amy Sweet, said her aunt moved to Austin to live near her. She said Tyrrell's legs were amputated below the knee 12 years ago as a result of complications from a blood clotting disorder.
Sweet said her aunt's passions ranged from rap music to animals, and that she even had a bug collection.
"On the night she died, she'd found a dragonfly she was excited about. Everything was a huge deal," Sweet said.
Tyrrell was born Susan Creamer on March 18, 1945, in San Francisco, though she eventually changed her last name to Tyrrell, her mother's maiden name, Sweet said. Tyrrell grew up in Connecticut and then got her start in acting on the stages of New York City before moving to Los Angeles, Sweet said.
Sweet said she plans to celebrate her aunt's life with a showing of "Fat City" next week at an Austin movie theater, followed by a gathering there to recognize her aunt's "unbridled irreverence and love for life." The movie showing and memorial will be open to the public, with a cost of $5 for those who aren't friends or family.
"She loved to party," Sweet said. She said her aunt would often write in a journal, and an entry from January featured the line: "I demand my death be joyful and I never return again."

Victor Spinetti
Victor Spinetti, a comic actor who appeared in three Beatles movies and won a Tony on Broadway, has died, his agent said Tuesday. He was 82.
Spinetti died Tuesday morning after suffering from cancer for several years, said Barry Burnett, the actor's close friend and agent.
Spinetti won a Tony award in 1965 for his Broadway performance in "Oh, What a Lovely War," but became most well-known for his appearances in the Beatles movies "A Hard Day's Night," ''Help," and "Magical Mystery Tour."
At a London Beatles Day event in 2010, Spinetti said he was included in the cast of "A Hard Day's Night" at George Harrison's insistence.
"He said, 'you gotta be in all our films otherwise me mum wouldn't come and see 'em, because she fancies you,'" Spinetti said. "That was why I was in."
Spinetti also co-authored "The John Lennon Play: In His Own Write" with Adrienne Kenney. Based on the writings of John Lennon, it opened in June 1968 in London.
Vittorio Georgio Andrea Spinetti was born to an Italian father and Welsh mother in the mining village of Cwm in south Wales. Regarded as an alien during World War II, he was beaten by two neighbors and lost hearing in one ear.
Spinetti studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff before moving to London to develop his acting career.
His more than 30 film roles included the part of Hortensio in "The Taming of the Shrew" and Mog Edwards in "Under Milk Wood," both films starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He also played the concierge in "The Return of the Pink Panther."
Spinetti was co-author of the script and did two voices for "Romeo, Juliet" - Armando Acosta's 1990 film which featured 108 cats and the actor John Hurt.
Barbara Windsor, a star of the "Carry On" films, said Tuesday that she had visited Spinetti at his hospice last week.
"He didn't look ill. He looked great. He was swearing a lot, like that would get rid of the illness, and we just laughed," she said.
