M Is FOR MASHUP - June 18th, 2008 - A Summer Rerun
June Mashup Challenge
By DJ Useo
I know how much you readers like to vote, so here's your chance to listen to four new mashups & then vote by eMail for your favorite. Sorry to keep y'all waiting since I remember getting much positive feedback for the last mashup challenge. The tough part for me is to pare down from the over-forty incredible new tracks I had to pick from this week. To make it fairer & more 'global', I picked each track from a different site & part of the world. One from UK, one from Austria, one from the states, & one from outer space. Take a brief second to gather your chi & we'll get to the tunes.
Our first challenger is the UK's Supakon ( supakon.blogspot.com ), a gifted feller with a melody & a veteran of many bootlegs & bootleg videos. "You Know I Got'ta Work It Good" (Amy Winehouse vs Amerie vs Missy Elliot) is a cut that struts with sleek beats & seductive brass. Over the mysterious instrumental bed of Amy W the Amerie & Missy vocals alternate to finestkind effect. Chances are you'll get distracted on his site by all the other flashy mashups & video links. Give his challenge track a hear & then we'll continue.
With the Illuminoids ( www.illuminoids.com ) you don't know how many there are, or where they're from, but you're assured of uncompromising pairings & arrangements. Many have experienced their bootlegs, their long mixes, radio appearances & their worthwhile podcasts. They impressed me again with a fanciful audio team-up of T. Rex vs. Shiny Toy Guns. "Get It On At Le Disko" brings the classic rock bopping of Marc Bolan up to the present day & past into the future where it blows your mind with dancefloor goodness. A solid contender, note it's full production sound & then we'll proceed to the next entrant.
DJ Clive$ter ( www.mashup-industries.com ) currently in Austria returns to the active scene after spending long hours on his successful Gnarls Barkley vs. Jay-Z album, "The Odd American Gangster" with more of the directly appealing mashup singles that made him an essential figure of the bootleg world. "Dare To Shout" (Gorillaz vs Tears For Fears) loops & stomps across your ears with brazen familiarity & lasting pleasure. He imbues both mega-known tracks with plenty of Clive$ter mixing to the point both are elevated to instant classic. The production line at Mashup-Industries continues with another hot model for the summer months.
Hailing from the USA, DJ Matt Hite ( www.beatmixed.com ) bids us all salute the mashup flag with his "You Get Around" (A Bad Name). Perfectly suited for dancefloor enjoyment, the buzzing number presents Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name" vs. Dragonette's "Get Around". You might actually forget the original tracks when you hear this baby skanking electronically & rocking abrasively in loud stereo. DJ Matt Hite has many a clubgoers' favorite to his credit, & this cut continues in like fashion. Note how after the song is over, you continue to hear the strong melody in your mind. His mixing defies all compression,eh?
Now that you've heard the challengers, drop your vote in the Yahoo! ballot box by writing me with your choice at useo8@yahoo.com. Winners announced next Wednesday.

J.W. "Blind" Boone was an African-American pianist who made his living as a musician during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Unfortunately, he suffered prejudice as a result of Jim Crow. In 1904, he played a concert in Paola, Kansas, but because of his race he could not get a room at a hotel. Finally, he got room and board at the home of an elderly African-American woman, a widow. She declined to accept money from Blind Boone for his stay, so he made some inquiries. He discovered that she owed $350 on her home (a lot of money back then). He paid the $350 and then gave her a present: the deed to her house.

The recent domestic terrorist murders of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas, Army recruiter Pvt William Long in Little Rock, Arkansas and security guard Stephan Johns at the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. occurred in jurisdictions that have the capital punishment. Prosecutors of these crimes will, no doubt, consider asking for it due to obvious premeditation of the perpetrators.
Are you in favor of Capital Punishment?

Much thanks to Michelle for the link - Daily Kos: History for Kossacks: Medieval Korea . As the parent of an adult, "Korean, child," I have always taken an interest in Korea, as do many other adoptive parents. `Ulysses' Meets Twitter
Bloomsday
Two devotees of "Ulysses" have adapted its 10th chapter to Twitter, which limits users to 140 characters per post. Called "Wandering Rocks," the chapter is especially well-suited to Twitter because it follows 19 Dubliners going about their daily business.
For three years now, Ian Bogost, a Georgia Tech professor, and friend Ian McCarthy, a product manager at LinkedIn, have commemorated "Bloomsday" on Twitter on June 16. That date in 1904 is when the entirety of "Ulysses" takes place, chronicling the experiences of a man named Leopold Bloom.
Bogost says using Twitter "for literary performance art might help shift perspectives on the service" and get people to use it for more than self-centered musings. "Perhaps in so doing, we can shift people's interest in social media technologies from egomania and immediacy toward deliberation and cultural reflection," Bogost wrote in an e-mail from Australia.
Bogost and McCarthy have dubbed their performance "Twittering Rocks," a play on the chapter's title that could also mean Twittering is awesome. They have registered 54 of the novel's key characters as Twitter users, and Bogost built a software program that tweets their first-person utterances at the correct moments in the chapter.

A Nevada newspaper says it has been served a federal grand jury subpoena seeking information about readers who posted comments on the paper's Web site.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday that its editor, Thomas Mitchell, plans to fight the request, which the newspaper received after reporting on a federal tax fraud case against business owner Robert Kahre.
The subpoena seeks the identities and personal information about people who posted comments on the story. The newspaper said prosecutors told the judge in the case that some comments hinted at acts of violence and the subpoena was issued out of concern for jurors' safety.
The newspaper said the subpoena bears the name of U.S. Assistant District Attorney J. Gregory Damm, a lawyer on the Justice Department team that is prosecuting Kahre and others on charges including income tax evasion, fraud and criminal conspiracy.

Comedian Howie Mandel, rocker Tom Cochrane, kids author Robert Munsch and the late "Perry Mason" actor Raymond Burr are among the latest inductees to Canada's Walk of Fame.
Other honourees announced at a news conference Tuesday include identical-twin fashion designers Dean & Dan Caten, actress Kim Cattrall, rockers Blue Rodeo and wheelchair racer Chantal Petitclerc.
This year's eight Canadian inductees will receive their stars and be feted at "The Canada Honours" gala in the city on Sept. 12.
The new crop of inductees join 116 others who've already been honoured by Canada's Walk of Fame, which recognizes talent in the fields of music, sport, film, television, literature, visual and performing arts, science and innovation.

Wedding News
Canellis - Cutie
A telegenic Miami priest who left the Catholic Church amid an uproar over published photos of him kissing his girlfriend on the beach made the relationship official Tuesday, marrying the woman he was involved with for about two years.
The Rev. Alberto Cutie and Ruhama Canellis were married by a judge in Coral Gables, according to Miami-Dade County court records. No other details of the wedding were known.
It was the latest in the public spectacle that started when photos of Cutie embracing his longtime girlfriend surfaced last month.
Amid the scandal, Cutie was removed from his South Beach church, protesters marched to support him, and he departed from Catholicism to become an Episcopal priest.

Current TV
Ling & Lee
One video recorder, six tapes, a digital camera and a stone. North Korea laid out its evidence Tuesday against two American journalists sentenced to hard labor for entering the country illegally.
The country's official news agency reported that the journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, documented their journey into communist North Korea, even pocketing a stone to commemorate the illicit trip across the frozen Tumen River from China.
"We've just entered a North Korean courtyard without permission," the Korean translation of their videotape narration said, according to Korean Central News Agency.
Ling, 32, and Lee, 36, who work for former Vice President Al Gore's California-based Current TV media group, were sentenced last Monday to 12 years of hard labor in a North Korean prison for illegal entry and "hostile acts."

What Child Labor Laws?
Octomom
California authorities slapped an online site Tuesday with four child-labor law violations for videotaping two of Nadya Suleman's octuplets without safeguards to protect their health and welfare.
State Labor Commissioner Angela Bradstreet said RadarOnline endangered the newborns, Noah and Isaiah Suleman, by failing to get required state permits, videotaping the infants at hours and for periods of time banned by regulations, and for failing to provide a monitor to watch over them during taping sessions.
RadarOnline said in a posting on its Web site that like other newsgathering organizations, it is not required to obtain permits and is not restricted to certain hours in its newsgathering operations.
Bradstreet countered that the interviews went far beyond incidental news coverage, which would not trigger child-labor issues.

Trooper Blooper
Oklahoma
The paramedic who scuffled with an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper while a patient waited inside the ambulance says the trooper should lose his badge.
Maurice White Jr. said Tuesday on the CBS "Early Show" that trooper Daniel Martin was in a state of rage when he stopped his ambulance and totally disregarded the patient's safety.
Martin stopped the ambulance May 24 for failing to yield.
White says he got out of the ambulance to tell the trooper they were taking a patient to the hospital. The argument quickly escalated into a scuffle and Martin put White in a choke hold.

Lottery Winner's Carrot Plan
Brian Caswell
A 74-year-old amateur gardener who scooped a 25 million pound lottery prize said Tuesday he would spend part of his winnings hiring an expert to learn how to grow better carrots.
Brian Caswell said he had always struggled with the vegetable on the prize-winning allotment he maintains with his Joan, 71, in Halliwell, near Bolton.
"I've been trying to grow carrots ever since I've been on that allotment and I've never had any success," he told reporters at a televised briefing.
"What I'm going to do now is bring a professional in and say, 'Right, sort that out.'"

In Memory
Bob Bogle
Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits including "Walk, Don't Run," has died at age 75.
The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. The hall's Web site hailed The Ventures as "the most successful instrumental combo in rock and roll history."
"Walk, Don't Run" reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart in 1960, and a revised version, "Walk, Don't Run '64," reached No. 8 in 1964. Among the band's other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O."
The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle initially played lead and bass and Don Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.
The Ventures were particularly popular in Japan, where Wilson and Bogle played as a duo during their first tour in 1962 because the promoter couldn't afford to pay the other two band members.
The two Americans made such an impression, Wilson recalled last year, that when the band came back in 1964, "there were 6,000 people at the airport." He said he didn't realize at first the Japanese fans were there to see The Ventures.
