Activist Lambasts Film Cancellations
"The Cove"
Dolphin activist Ric O'Barry urged Japanese theatres on Tuesday to screen Oscar-winning documentary "The Cove," despite threats from groups who see its footage of dolphins being slaughtered as an affront to traditional culture.
O'Barry, a former dolphin trainer who is in Japan to promote the film, told Reuters Television that the cancellations were an "assault on democracy."
"This is not North Korea. It's not China and it's not Cuba. It's a democratic society. There's a very small minority of radicals who are going to theater owners and threatening them. They don't want people to see this film," O'Barry said.
The documentary, which shows dolphins being herded into a cove and slaughtered, has met with fierce resistance from some groups in Japan. Fears that protests might inconvenience movie-goers have prompted cancellations at two cinemas in Tokyo and one in Osaka, according to Unplugged, the Japan distributor.

Allows "Glee" To Use Songs
Coldplay
As Fox's "Glee" became a breakout hit, bands lined up for a chance to have their music performed by the William McKinley High kids.
Well, not every artist. Notably, Canadian power-ballad master Bryan Adams and British soft-rockers Coldplay said no.
But writer-producer Ryan Murphy told the Hollywood Reporter that not only has Coldplay changed its collective mind, the band's entire catalog has also been made available to the show.
A nod from the "Glee" kids can lead to a lucrative payoff for a song's writers and publishers. Their version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" reached No. 4 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart a year ago, while a Madonna-themed EP hit No. 1.

Shooting Documentary About Himself
William Shatner
The world knows William Shatner as the former "Star Trek" captain. Canadians know Shatner for his Montreal roots and early classic stage career in Stratford, Ontario.
So Canadian pay TV channel Movie Central will combine those two worlds in "The Captains," a documentary that captures Shatner's career arc to overnight success as Captain James T. Kirk. Shatner will direct the film, which will start production in July for broadcast in winter 2011.
Movie Central also acquired the Canadian broadcast rights to "William Shatner's Gonzo Ballet," which features a ballet by Margo Sappington set to music from Shatner.

Ex-Stuntwoman
Heidi von Beltz
Heidi von Beltz was a stunning 24-year-old actress and world-class skier in 1980 when she got a call from her boyfriend, "Cannonball Run" stunt coordinator Bobby Bass, to head to the desert outside Las Vegas and double for the film's female lead, Farrah Fawcett.
The stunt called for an Aston Martin to weave its way through a line of speeding, oncoming cars, but the car was plagued with mechanical problems. The steering barely functioned, and the clutch and speedometer didn't work. To make matters worse, the vehicle had no seat belts.
The driver, Jimmy Nickerson, wanted to wait until the car could be repaired, but he was told that the parts from Los Angeles had not arrived and that he'd have to "make do."
Her car, in which she was a passenger operating the smoke machine to make the car look as if it was on fire, slammed head-on into the first in the line of onrushing cars, and she was hurtled into the windshield. When members of the crew got to the scene of the accident, they found Heidi unconscious, her head hanging limply on her chest, her neck crushed. In that moment, on that day 30 years ago this month, her life would change forever. She was paralyzed from the neck down, and remains so to this day.

Video For Franco-Era Victims
"Culture Against Impunity"
Fifteen top Spanish artists, including director Pedro Almodovar and actor Javier Bardem, appear in a new video in honour of the thousands of victims of Franco-era crimes unveiled Monday.
In the video they narrate the experiences of 15 men and women who were killed by General Francisco Franco's forces during Spain's 1936-39 civil war and the dictatorship that followed, whose remains have not been found.
It was made by a group of actors, directors, writers and musicians who oppose the Supreme Court decision in April to put top judge Baltasar Garzon on trial for abuse of power for opening a probe into Franco-era atrocities despite a parliament-approved amnesty to all involved in such crimes in 1977.
The group, gathered under the banner "Culture Against Impunity", want the charges against Garzon to be dropped and they urge the government to do more to find the remains of the opponents of the Franco regime scattered in mass graves across the country.

Producers Fire Back At Iraq Veteran
"Hurt Locker"
Producers of "The Hurt Locker" are firing back against the Iraq War veteran who claimed that his life story was ripped off to create the Academy Award-winning drama.
Master Sgt. Jeffrey S. Sarver filed his case with much fanfare just days before the film won best picture at the Oscars in March. He claimed the depiction of an Army bomb squad was a thinly veiled account of his own story.
According to Sarver's complaint, journalist/screenwriter Mark Boal breached an agreement with the U.S. military that restricted the reporting of detailed personal information about service members. Sarver said the information was used in Boal's Playboy article and then the screenplay for "The Hurt Locker," and that the depiction of the character of Will James violated his publicity rights, defamed him and caused emotional stress.
The defendants knock Sarver's breach of contract claim by saying there was no contractual "privity," or a direct agreement between him and the parties in this case. As far as emotional distress, the defendants attempt to escape this claim based on a lack of specific facts alleged about how the inflection of distress occurred.

Actor Arrested
James Farentino
Actor James Farentino has been booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery following a citizens' arrest at his Hollywood home.
Los Angeles police said Monday that the 72-year-old actor tried to physically remove a man from his house late Sunday. The man, who police said had visible bruises, made the citizens' arrest.
Farentino was taken to a police station and spent the night in jail before being released on $20,000 bail.
An actor since the 1960s, Farentino had a recurring role on the television show "Dynasty" and starred in the movie "The Final Countdown."

Authorities say California artist Thomas Kinkade spent a night in jail after being arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
California Highway Patrol officials said Monday that Kinkade was pulled over outside Carmel and arrested by a CHP officer just after 10 p.m. Friday
CHP Officer Robert Lehman says the 52-year-old Kinkade was booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving. He was released Saturday morning.
Kinkade is famous for his paintings of cottages, country gardens and churches in dewy morning light.

No Deal Between Partner And Heirs
Stieg Larsson
The late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's family and his longtime partner have failed to reach an agreement in their dispute over the lucrative inheritance from his best-selling Millennium trilogy, his father and brother said Tuesday.
"The discussions which have been going on for six months between Stieg Larsson's heirs and his former partner Eva Gabrielsson have ended," the two men said in a statement also signed by their lawyer.
The author of the three cult thrillers left behind a wrenching drama when he died suddenly of heart attack at age 50 in 2004. He died without a will and since he and his live-in partner were not married and had no children, his estate went to his father and brother, in accordance with Swedish law.
That included royalties from the books -- and sale of film rights -- whose English titles are "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played with Fire", and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest".
Even though Larsson and Gabrielsson were a couple for 32 years, there is somewhat surprisingly no common law marriage in progressive Sweden.

2nd Mercedes Taken, Rolled Off Cliff
Charlie Sheen
For the second time in five months, a Mercedes-Benz owned by "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen was stolen and sent off Mulholland Drive near his Santa Monica Mountains home, authorities said Tuesday.
Firefighters responding to a report of a traffic accident found the silver Mercedes S600 about 100 feet down a brushy ravine around 3 a.m., Fire Department spokesman Eric Scott said.
The car showed no signs of forced entry, police Officer Bruce Borihanh said. He could not confirm television reports that the keys were in the ignition.
However, the car was running and had its lights on, fire Battalion Chief Peter Benesch said.

Meg Whitman
California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman had an altercation with an eBay employee when she was CEO of the company, The New York Times reported Monday, prompting Whitman's campaign to say such disputes are not uncommon in high-stress workplaces.
The two later overcame their differences, and the employee continues to work at the online auction site.
The Times posted a story to its website based on anonymous sources that said Whitman became angry and pushed the employee in an executive conference room at eBay's Silicon Valley headquarters. The employee, Young Mi Kim, was helping Whitman prepare for a media interview for which Whitman felt unprepared, according to the newspaper's account.
The story said Kim threatened to sue after the incident three years ago, but later agreed to a mediated settlement that remains private.

States The Obvious
Anderson Cooper
CNN's Anderson Cooper said Tuesday that he still hadn't heard from BP after his attack on the company for failing to make its representatives available to talk about the Gulf oil spill on his nightly newscast.
On Monday night's show, Cooper took the unusual step of playing tape of 14 different nights in which he told viewers that the company had either not responded to requests for interviews or declined. He said the company failed the test of transparency and its officials don't like to be asked tough questions.
"It's easy for me to kind of smile about this and almost kind of make a joke about it," Cooper said on the air. "But it's not a joking matter."
Cooper's harsh words were noteworthy, particularly given a lack of complaints from other networks. They left him walking a thin line between informing his viewers about BP's unwillingness to answer questions on his newscast or appearing petulant that he's not getting guests.

Uncensors Some Images
Apple
Oscar Wilde and James Joyce have not lost the power to shock, at least on the iPad.
Apple said Tuesday that it was mistaken in restricting images for apps for Robert Berry's comic book edition of Joyce's "Ulysses," which contains nudity, and for panels showing two naked man kissing in Tom Bouden's graphic novel of Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."
Spokeswoman Trudy Miller said developers had been allowed "to resubmit their original drawings" and use the original artwork.

Perez' Panty Confession
Miley Cyrus
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton on Tuesday sought to defuse a media furor he created by posting a picture on his Twitter account that seemed to suggest teen pop star Miley Cyrus had been photographed without wearing underwear.
The snapshot showed the "Hannah Montana" Disney idol, 17, climbing out of a car while wearing a short, white dress. The space between her legs was pixilated and carried a "warning" notice in Hilton's Twitter posting, which has some 2 million followers.
Although the photo was later removed, it sparked a flurry of news reports and talk among celebrity watchers over whether L.A.-based Hilton could be prosecuted for distributing child pornography, given that Cyrus is still a minor under U.S. law.
Hilton said he had posted the photo to highlight the "very unladylike fashion" in which Cyrus was getting out of the car.

Rodent Revisions
Wii
Mickey Mouse won't be bad in the upcoming "Epic Mickey" video game. He was just drawn that way.
Warren Spector, creative director of Disney Interactive Studios' Junction Point, said the beloved international icon won't transform into a snarling rat as originally planned for the game when players make mischievous choices, such as pilfering treasures from a store or erasing characters with thinner. Instead, Mickey will take on a smudgy look if he's naughty.
"We're not going to change Mickey's image so much," said Spector.
During a recent demonstration of the latest iteration of the upcoming Wii game that will be on display at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Spector said the decision to scrap the malevolent-looking Mickey was made following negative feedback during focus testing of the game, which features Mickey trekking through a cartoon wasteland.

Court Bars Stunt Jumper
Empire State Building
The TV daredevil who tried to parachute off the Empire State Building has been permanently banned from the New York City landmark.
A Manhattan court ordered Jeb Corliss to stay away from the skyscraper. The ban was part of a ruling last week in a lawsuit filed by the building's management.
Corliss' lawyer, Mark Jay Heller, says the stunt jumper had already promised to avoid the building unless invited back. An Empire State Building spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call for comment Tuesday evening.
Corliss was the host of a Discovery Channel program called "Stunt Junkies" when he tried to parachute from the 86th-floor observation deck of the 102-story landmark in April 2006. Security guards stopped him.

Maryland Town To Auction Sign
'Blair Witch'
The town of Burkittsville will test the market for memorabilia from the film "The Blair Witch Project" by auctioning off a welcome sign similar to those shown in the 1999 thriller.
Mayor Debby Burgoyne said Tuesday that voters in the western Maryland town approved selling all four metal signs in an election last week.
One of the signs will likely hit eBay this weekend, with a reserve price of $1,500.
Film studio Artisan Entertainment had the heavy metal signs made after souvenir hunters stole the original wooden ones. That didn't stop the thievery, so the town recently replaced them with versions that don't resemble those seen in the movie.

Denmark's Look-A-Like
Graceland
Builders in Denmark laid the first brick Tuesday of a copy of Elvis Presley's famous estate Graceland, to open next year as part of a museum devoted to the "King" of rock'n roll, organisers said.
More than 8,000 kilometres (5,000 miles) from Elvis's estate in Memphis, Tennessee, the Danish Graceland is being built in the small western town of Randers, as a star addition to the town's prized Elvis museum.
"This exact copy of Graceland will include some 6,000 original possessions of the King like clothing, boots, guitars, letters, contracts and other diverse objects," museum director Henrik Knudsen, 46, told AFP.
When Randers' original Elvis museum opened 15 years ago it was "the only permanent museum on the King outside the United States," said Knudsen, who says he "became an Elvis fan at the age of eight after hearing 'Burning Love'."

337 Pounder
Alaska Halibut
A Colorado man fishing in the waters of southcentral Alaska has hauled in a 337-pound halibut - easily the biggest catch in the region this season.
The Anchorage Daily News reports that Aaron Buscher of Conifer, Colo., caught the 7-foot, 4-inch halibut late Monday morning in Resurrection Bay while competing in a fishing derby.
It took him 45 minutes to haul the big fish to dock in Seward. He had been fishing south of Alaska's Montague Island.
Buscher used 50-pound test braided line and a Penn Torque 10 reel mounted to a 7-foot Penn Torque rod.

Struck By Lightning
Touchdown Jesus
Hundreds of sightseers drawn to the remains of a six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ that was struck by lightning and erupted into flames stopped Tuesday to snap pictures or gaze at the ruined structure.
The "King of Kings" statue, one of southwest Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.
The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m. Monday, Monroe police dispatchers said.
The sculpture, about 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained Tuesday.

Ken Brown
A LIVERPOOL musician who played with the Beatles before they won worldwide fame has died.
Former Quarrymen guitarist Ken Brown, 70, was discovered at his home in Essex on Monday after a concerned relative had raised the alarm.
In 1959, Ken persuaded George Harrison to bring along John Lennon and Paul McCartney to fill a residency slot at the Casbah Coffee Club in West Derby.
The four musicians formed the Quarrymen and performed a number of gigs in Liverpool before Ken was ousted from the group in a dispute over money.
Ken next approached Pete Best and they played together in a band called The Blackjacks until the drummer was poached by the Beatles to join their crucial groundbreaking tour to Hamburg in Germany.
