M Is FOR MASHUP - June 12th, 2013
The Mashup Lull Begins with a Bang
By DJ Useo
It happens every June when the weather warms up like it has. The mashup scene slows while people seek out other (mainly offline) activities. I noticed immediately that rather than the thousand new mashups a day, we slowed down to 500. Still way more than any human could keep up with. I reckon only those 'people' tapped into all the servers in the world are the few to get them all. HA! There's so many more mashup producers than five years ago, and literally tons of small sites to post them at. I know one home producer who places his tracks at TWENTY different sites. I'd need a secretary to do that myself. In fact, I need a secretary just to keep up with where I post already. It's so easy to locate very good mashups that I wager the first tracks I find will be mighty fine. Let's take a look and see. Honestly, I haven't picked these in advance. Let's begin...
01-The Homogenic Chaos has an hours old mix called 'Please Don't Leave Me Intense' (Pink vs Armin Van Buuren) that is wonderful. I'm amazed that the first track I found was by a huge favorite mixer of mine. The artists he used are great separately also, but together, it's a pleaser and a half.

02-Wow! Another instant classic by a long-time fave of mine, DJ Lobsterdust. He worked up a spanking new mix called 'BYOB x Get Lucky' (Daft Punk vs System Of a Down) . The number one best seller from Daft punk goes so well with SOAD. You'll be shocked. It comes as an incredible new video version here with a link for the mp3 included.
03-DJ MikeA brings us 'Bamba Zombies' (Los Lobos vs The Misfits). A larger genre clash of a mashup I can't envision. Plays like it started this way.
( official.fm/tracks/fnJY )
04-Michmash brings us 'Rock The Tempo' (Celldweller vs Fatboy Slim) to fine effect. It's bass-y and ingratiating. The vocals keep pace well with the amazing energy of the FBS.
( official.fm/tracks/qgvx )
05-DJ Energy is newer to me than the previous mixers, but he sure has it going on with '
A Hundred Ways Stellar Boing Clash Boom' (Dada Life vs Daddy's Groove vs Ellie Lawson) . I tried to pick someone who I didn't know of, but it didn't happen. Sure am glad I heard this, though. You will be also.
( soundcloud.com/djenergy76/dada-life-vs-daddys-groove-vs )
And that is that. Even in the lull of the heat, mashup producers thrive like anything. Wow, did Lobsterdusts' mix pull in the numbers. Clearly, I need to move to Europe to be appreciated. Lol! But, try the 'find a new mashup test' yourself, and you'll find that there's tons of great mixes all the time. In the olden days of the early 2000's many of the cuts would be just ok, or even lousy. That's a rare thing nowadays.
Now, for what you've been waiting for...
The BIG REVEAL of the IT IS TO LAFF 3 funny mashup albums' mixers. We all used fake names for the first week,
if you remember last weeks' 'M Is For Mashup' article.
Now I can show you the fake dj names cover
here
( i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/useo8/DJ%20Useo%20Covers%202/itistoLaff-backcover2ee_zps1c2a9511.jpg )

The names probably didn't surprise too many of you, as the mp3's were tagged with both sets of names, and there was a text file included in the release also. Remember, if you want to hear really funny mashups,
the collection is free!

"I'm Looking Just Like Heaven' (
The Beatles vs The Cure). Here's a track I made for my upcoming INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA 8 collection. It's "I'm Looking Through You" sung over 'Just Like Heaven". The version on the full album will have Satan onnit also. This single version does not. Sorry to disappoint you.

However, at the top of the page appears a reproduction of a short note that Mr. Gorey sent to Mr. Theroux. The note says in part, "Thank you so much for the neat skull."

African-American Museum
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is giving $12 million to a museum being built on Washington's National Mall that will document African-American history, officials said Tuesday.
The media mogul and former talk-show host previously gave $1 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the museum says her $13 million total contribution is its largest to date. As a result, the museum's 350-seat theater will be named after Winfrey, who is also a member of its advisory council.
Construction on the $500 million museum began in early 2012. When it's finished in 2015, the museum will be the 19th Smithsonian museum. The U.S. government is providing half of the funding. To date, about $140 million has been raised in private funds.
Some of the highlights of the collection include a lace shawl owned by abolitionist Harriet Tubman; a Jim Crow-era segregated railroad car; slave rebellion leader Nat Turner's Bible; and the glass-topped casket that held the body of 14-year-old Emmett Till, whose 1955 murder in Mississippi for whistling at a white woman helped spark the civil rights movement.
The museum's most recent big acquisition was a South Carolina slave cabin dating to the 19th century. The cabin from Edisto Island was disassembled in May in preparation for its move to the museum.

Kids' Book
Ringo Starr
Ringo Starr is turning an old Beatles favorite into a children's book.
The drummer has a deal with Simon & Schuster's Children Books for "Octopus' Garden," based on one of the few songs the drummer wrote and sang while with the Beatles. The publisher announced Tuesday that the book will come out in Britain this fall and in the U.S. in early 2014. The book will be illustrated by Ben Cort, whose credits include "Aliens Love Underpants."
Starr, who turns 73 next month, first wrote the song while on Peter Sellers' yacht in 1968. Starr and Sellers co-starred in the film "The Magic Christian."
"Octopus' Garden" first appeared on the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album, released in 1969.

Copyright Lawsuit Revived
Ghost Rider
A comic book writer who claims he created the flaming-skulled character called Ghost Rider got another chance to press his claim on Tuesday when a U.S. appeals court revived his lawsuit against Marvel Comics.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a 2011 district court ruling that found the rights to the character belonged to Marvel Comics, owned by The Walt Disney Co. It returned the case to the lower court for trial.
Former Marvel freelancer Gary Friedrich, who claims he created the character, will pursue the case "aggressively and vigorously," his lawyer Charles Kramer said.
Ghost Rider, a motorcycle-riding vigilante whose head is a flaming skull, first appeared as a vigilante superhero in 1972.
In 2004, Friedrich began considering legal action against the comic book company when he learned of an impending movie adaptation. He sued Marvel for copyright infringement and claimed that he owned the character and its use in films, as well as toys, video games and other merchandise.

Sting, Green Day, Ed Sheeran and Mumford & Sons are among musicians raising their voices against poverty by re-recording classic protest songs.
The agit8 project, which hopes to influence leaders at next week's G-8 summit in Northern Ireland, is backed by the One Campaign set up by U2 front man Bono.
The songs, available online from Tuesday, include Sting performing The Police track "Driven to Tears" and Sheeran's version of Bob Dylan's "Masters of War."
"Love, Actually" director Richard Curtis has made a short film on the theme of music and protest. It will be projected onto the side of London's Tate Modern gallery on Tuesday through Thursday evenings.

Misdemeanor Boat DUI Charge
Erin Brockovich
Environmental activist and movie namesake Erin Brockovich will face a misdemeanor charge of operating a boat while intoxicated at Lake Mead, the district attorney in Las Vegas decided Tuesday.
Brockovich, 52, has an Oct. 7 court date in Henderson Justice Court stemming from her arrest Friday evening at a marina on the Colorado River reservoir behind Hoover Dam, said Tess Driver, an aide to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson.
A Nevada state game warden reported that Brockovich appeared to argue on the 26-foot Cobra motor boat with her husband, Eric Ellis, and threw a cellphone into the water before having trouble mooring the vessel at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor.
The warden said he had to help Brockovich dock the boat, and said two breath tests measured her blood-alcohol level at twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Tourists Bypass Blockade
Grand Canyon
Tourist cars and buses resumed their bumpy run to a Grand Canyon tourist attraction run Tuesday, bypassing a roadblock set up last week by a dude rancher in a bitter access dispute.
The Hualapai tribe, which operates the canyon Skywalk viewing platform, built the bypass on federal land in Arizona and reopened the Diamond Bar Road to traffic.
Diamond Bar runs briefly through the Grand Canyon Ranch Resort, belonging to Nigel Turner. The former British Army helicopter pilot grew angry over delays affecting the construction of a separate improved road to the Skywalk for which he had granted an easement in 2007. In late May, Turner deployed armed guards to charge $20 per person and $500 per tour bus for the upward of 1,000 visitors a day who use the road before finally preventing entry altogether.
"For two weeks, thousands of people have been coming to the Grand Canyon to enjoy their vacations and have either been faced with an armed man collecting money from them or finding a roadblock and having to turn around," Hualapai Tribe spokesman Dave Cieslak said.

Alpine Retreat Getting Makeover
Obersalzberg
Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat in Bavaria is getting a makeover, with a 17-million euro ($22.5 million) renovation project that will enlarge the historical information center now there.
The daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports the 1,000 square meter (11,000 square foot) center will be expanded to 2,500 square meters (27,000 square feet) in a project that will take until 2018.
The center includes details on Obersalzberg - the mountain ridge where Hitler had his Eagle's Nest retreat and Berghof home and headquarters - as well as on the Nazi regime in general.
The alpine village was a second center of power after Berlin for the Nazis, with high-ranking officials like Herman Goering, Albert Speer and Martin Bormann also keeping homes there.

Magazine Limits Dropped
Colorado
A Colorado law to require marijuana magazines to be sold behind the counter like pornography is being abandoned before it takes effect.
State lawyers indicated Monday they don't want to go back to court to talk about the recently enacted law that would have made Colorado in an unusual position. It would have been one of only two states to allow recreational weed, but the only state not to allow magazines like High Times to be sold on general newsstands.
Scheduled to take effect July 1, the law would have required magazines about pot to be kept behind the counter in stores that allow shoppers under 21. The measure didn't set an age limit to buy the magazines.
In an agreement filed in U.S. District Court Monday, the state agreed with a group of suing booksellers that the limitation "is void and unconstitutional because it violates the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."
