Kathryn Hughes: Don't look down on those who eat fast food (Guardian)
When you are exhausted after a 10-hour shift, then soup is fiddly to consume on the way home. Burgers and kebabs, by contrast, are easy to eat with one hand and require neither plates nor knives. Far from being the refuseniks of capitalism, unable to master its first principle of delayed gratification, the people who rely on fast food outlets are its honourable foot soldiers. We should salute them.

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

Big Differences
Fox "News"
On almost every category of political and social importance, Republicans and the smaller set of Republicans who watch Fox News have significantly differing opinions and understandings of the world, a recent study shows.
The June 2014 study [PDF] comes courtesy the Public Religion Research Institute/Brookings Institute and ostensibly focuses on opinions on immigration reform. But the most interesting numbers include the impact of Fox News on shaping the reform debate.
According to the surveys, "Only 42% of Republicans who most trust Fox News to provide accurate information about politics and current events support a path to citizenship, compared to 60% of Republicans who most trust other news sources." Overall, 51 percent of Republicans support creating a path to citizenship, giving a nine percentage point edge in each direction depending on whether the respondent goes to Fox for their news.
That Fox News-infused opinion isn't just seen on immigration reform, though. On almost every polling question - raising the minimum wage, gay marriage, Obama's approval - Republicans who trust Fox News above other sources had less progressive views than those who most trusted another TV news source.

Snowden's NSA Leaks Were 'An Important Service'
Al Gore
Former Vice President Al Gore said Edward Snowden did "an important service" by leaking documents that detailed the extent of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs one year ago.
Asked to define Snowden as either a whistleblower or a traitor, Gore said he would "push it more away from the traitor side."
"He clearly violated the law so you can't say OK, what he did is all right. It's not," Gore told The Guardian during an interview at the Southland technology conference in Nashville, Tennessee. "But what he revealed in the course of violating important laws included violations of the U.S. constitution that were way more serious than the crimes he committed."
"In the course of violating important law, he also provided an important service," Gore continued. "OK. Because we did need to know how far this has gone."

No Farewell Show
Arsenio Hall
Arsenio Hall was supposed to spend the week of June 2 in New York City, touting the upcoming second season of his late-night talk show on The View, Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show and Late Show with David Letterman. Instead, he was in Los Angeles, packing up boxes, bidding adieu to his staff and sharing via social media his disappointment over his show's cancellation. "I dreamed that they picked up my show for Season 2, then changed their minds and canceled the show," he tweeted to Magic Johnson. "Had to be a dream." Indeed, despite renewing The Arsenio Hall Show in February, CBS Television Distribution surprised Hall and his staff at the end of May by reversing course and canceling the show.
Arsenio was on a scheduled break when the decision came down, which means Hall didn't get a chance to produce a farewell show. "Most of my team went on vacation after celebrating our 2nd year pick up...and returned to cancellation," he tweeted. Fans were dismayed, and Hall's exit strikes a blow for diversity in late night. "In my five years in the cast of a network comedy, Arsenio Hall and George Lopez were the only late night talk shows couches I was welcomed to," Community star Yvette Nicole Brown tweeted. What happened?
1. Arsenio was losing its time slots. Tribune Broadcasting was a partner in the show, but when even its flagship New York station, WPIX, moved Arsenio from 11 to 11:30, it was clear others would follow. The real blow came when CBS got word that one of the nation's largest local station operators, Sinclair Broadcast Group, was set to downgrade Arsenio out of the 11pm-midnight period. Insiders say CBS then crunched the numbers and realized advertising revenue would take a huge hit.
2. The audience just wasn't there. After opening strong, Arsenio dropped 60 percent in the key demo of viewers ages 18-49. "You can't be the fourth choice out there," a show insider says. CBS Television Distribution said in a statement, "While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue."

Guinness Certifies New Record
Gilda's LaughFest
A laughter festival in western Michigan is claiming the record for the most people wearing sunglasses in the dark.
Gilda's LaughFest says Tuesday that Guinness World Records has certified the March 16 event in Grand Rapids that saw 1,675 people take part for five minutes.
The event honours the memory of comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
Last year, 1,532 people at LaughFest put on false moustaches to set that Guinness.
Gilda's LaughFest says it also broke Guinness records in 2012 when 607 people wore chicken beaks and in 2011 when 925 rubber chickens were tossed in downtown Grand Rapids.

Teacher Tenure Unconstitutional
California
Tenure and other job protections for California's public school teachers were ruled unconstitutional Tuesday by a judge presiding in a lawsuit brought by nine students.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu cited the historic case of Brown v. Board of Education in ruling that all students are entitled to equal education and said the current situation discriminates against minority and low-income students in placing ineffective teachers in their schools.
The judge said the plaintiffs' equal-protection claims validly stated that the statutes violated their fundamental rights to equality of education.
The lawsuit, Vergara v. California, was "brought" by Beatriz Vergara and eight other students who said they were saddled with teachers who let classrooms get out of control, came to school unprepared and in some cases told them they'd never make anything of themselves.
The lawsuit was backed by wealthy Silicon Valley entrepreneur David Welch's nonprofit group Students Matter, which assembled a high-profile legal team including Boutrous, who represented resident George W. Bush before the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2000 recount of Florida presidential ballots. Welch, who made a fortune in corporate acquisitions, says he founded Students Matter because of a passion for public education, adding both he and his three children have attended public schools.

Retrial In 'Warning-Shot' Case Delayed
Marissa Alexander
The retrial of a Florida woman who had her conviction for shooting at her abusive husband overturned on appeal was postponed on Tuesday to wait for new legislation inspired by the public outcry over her case.
Judge James Daniel postponed until Dec. 1 the retrial of Marissa Alexander, 33, a black woman whose case ignited protests from civil rights groups last year in the wake of the acquittal of George Zimmerman for killing black teenager Trayvon Martin.
The judge said he wanted to wait until the dust settled on new legislation that was passed in Florida this spring but is yet to be signed by Governor Rick $cott (R-Abomination). The law would make it legal to fire a warning shot under the state's controversial "stand your ground" law.
Alexander did not injure anyone but the court gave her a 20-year prison term under the state's mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines because she fired a gun during the alleged assault with two children in the home.
She has said she fired at her abusive husband during a violent argument in 2010. Her husband, Rico Gray, had been convicted of domestic violence. At the time of the shooting, Alexander had a concealed weapons permit as well as an active restraining order against him.

Wish Granted
Ted Cruz
After many, many months of promising to renounce his Canadian citizenship, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Shutdown) has finally achieved that goal.
Cruz's Canadian citizenship was officially terminated in May, according to the Dallas Morning News. The senator was notified by mail of the renunciation a few days ago.
Cruz released his birth certificate to the Dallas Morning News last August to quell speculation that he was a Canadian citizen, not an American. His plan backfired when the paper pointed out that Cruz's birth in Calgary, Alberta to an American mother likely made him a dual citizen.
Following the allegations, Cruz was quick to promise he would work to renounce his Canadian citizenship.

Backward Stance
Hollywood
Obvious Child is the movie that Hollywood should have been making forty years ago, the second that the Supreme Court legalized abortion with the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision. It's the movie Hollywood should've made thirty years ago when Ronald Reagan was waging war against Planned Parenthood and other reproductive healthcare providers, and it's the movie Hollywood should have been making ten, twenty years ago, when states began passing laws that limited women's access to safe and legal abortions.
It's to the immense credit of writer-director Gillian Robespierre that Obvious Child never seems to register the weight of our expectations.
Obvious Child is not "the abortion movie" that its own marketing and reception might lead you to anticipate. Robespierre and star Jenny Slate have made a movie about a woman, not an abortion. There are no impassioned speeches about women's rights, no bad guys protesting outside the clinic, and no after-the-fact breakdowns. Donna's life does not revolve around her choice, and neither does the movie. It is at every turn more relaxed, more confident, and more rewarding than what we as an audience have been conditioned to expect from this kind of movie-the kind with a capital-I "Issue" at its heart. Maybe the most political thing about Obvious Child is that it makes abortion feel as if it isn't an issue at all.
Hollywood likes to think of itself as a liberal stronghold, pushing America forward one very important Oscar picture at a time. But for the last thirty years Hollywood has remained conspicuously silent as women's rights have been rolled back bill by bill, Supreme Court ruling by Supreme Court ruling. The last major release to feature an abortion was Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls in 2010-since that film's release, over 3 million legal abortions have been performed in the United States alone.

$7 Billion Customer Service Problem
Cable Companies
For cable companies, the bad news about public perception keeps getting worse.
First the beleaguered pay TV providers were rated next-to-last on the most recent American Customer Satisfaction Index, dropping 4.4% to a 65 rating. The only industry to score worse was Internet service providers. Since all the major cable companies are ISPs as well, it seems the only thing people like less than cable companies is another division of those same businesses. That's like someone telling you, "The only thing I like less than your appearance is your personality."
Now, a new study released last week from management consultancy cg42 paints a grim picture for the nation's five biggest cable companies: Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Charter, and Cox. Based on a survey of more than 3,000 current customers, cg42 used what it calls its "Brand Vulnerability Index" to measure consumer frustrations with each cable company and rank the providers according to their risks of customer attrition and revenue loss.
An overwhelming 53% of customers told the study they are frustrated by their primary cable provider. The top-reported frustrations were uncompetitive pricing, "nickel and diming," and the fact that there are better deals for new customers than existing ones. People also expressed displeasure at the lack of choice due to limited competition.
Leaving more than half of your industry's customers dissatisfied is a fairly impressive feat. The biggest question the study raises isn't "Why are people so upset?" but "Why have they stuck around for so long?"

Crackdown On Wood Boards
Cheese World
Aging cheese on wood boards is a common practice among artisan cheesemakers at home and overseas. Now, some in the industry are worried regulators may crack down on it.
In recent communication to the New York regulators, the Food and Drug Administration noted that wood shelves and boards cannot be adequately cleaned and sanitized, and as such, do not conform to a particular regulation regarding plant equipment and utensils.
In a statement issued Tuesday, however, the FDA seemed to backtrack on the stance. It noted that it hasn't taken any enforcement action based solely on the use of wood shelves. And while it said it has expressed concern about whether wood can be adequately cleaned, it added that it is "always open to evidence that shows that wood can be safely used for specific purposes, such as aging cheese."
The note to New York regulators had sparked concern in the cheese world because much of the cheese that's imported in the U.S. is aged on wood. Robert Ralyea, a senior extension associate at Cornell University's Department of Food Science, said aging cheese on wood is even a part of the standard of identity for some cheeses, such as Comte cheese.
