Mashup Comp Roundup February
By DJ Useo
Mmm-mmm, I sure love the taste of a fine mashup. What could please a person of deep mix passions such as I more than a fine mashup compilation? How about 5 new mashup collections? Yup,I'm here to tell you there's five (5!) new mashup collections out that cover enough stylistic variety to please nearly everyone! You'd think I'd still be sated by the great collections you've read about here since 2010 began, but like Dracula presented with a new batch of blood-filled peasants, I am thirsting for more. Well, the damn has broke with these five swell new mashup records.
First up is 'SEX MASHINE' ( sugamotor.blogspot.com/2010/02/sex-mashine-by-sugamotor-and-friends.html ) a collection that presents you with a theme you will all find engaging. This red hot collection is the first from mashup juggernaut Sugamotor & bodes well for future comps from him & his horndog mixing buddies. This record is truly an international orgy with potent contributions from Ben Double M, Dunproofin', DJ Fac, DJ Giac, LeeDM101, Marc Johnce, Mighty Mike, RoM1RoM, ToToM and ZoOm. You'll hear them addressing the erotic subject through mixes of such artists as Snoop Dogg, Madonna, Diana Ross, Kelis, Massive Attack, Mariah Carey, Tiefschwarz, Tina Turner & many more. This collection really should come with at least one con-dom. lol
Next we direct our gaze to the just-posted today Mashup-Industries release 'Café del Mash Volume 2' ( www.mashup-industries.com/ ). This wonderfully-chilled masterpiece reprises last years splendid volume 1. Again lightning strikes with talents like Tone396, DJ Clive$ter, MarcJohnce, DJ Schmolli, & Dan Mei, with many more strong mixers presenting their tasty wares. The Homogenic Chaos gives us 'Heavy Listen To Relax' (Ludvig & Stelar vs. The Gossip vs. Roxette vs. Smoke City), Qubic hits a home run with 'Much More Than A Kiss' (Diana Krall vs Goloka vs Ancient Future vs Michael Darius), with Krazyben providing the direct hit 'Hypersonic Sweet Music' (Hooverphonic vs. Royksopp vs. Bass Fly). If you are into mellow, brilliant mixing, give yourself a treat & devour this fine collection.
What mashup fan doesn't enjoy rap-oriented tracks? Knowing this, various German & Austrian Mashup DJs/Producers under the BOOTIE BERLIN / MASHUP YOUR BOOTZ' moniker teamed up with the Berlin Rap-MC-Duo & Soundsystem Smith & Smart, to mash & remix their latest album release "Beides". Each track uses the new Smith & Smart album as a starting point, then goes wild with bootleg creativity.'SMITH & SMART - MASH-BEIDES:mashed up & remixed' ( mashupyourbootz.blogspot.com/2010/02/smith-smart-mash-beides.html ) is a fully-realized modern confection with the satisfying flavour of Germanic rap put to the wide variety available from modern mashing. Tracks like DJ Morgoth's 'Song for Berlin' (Blur vs. Smith & Smart), Dr.Waumiau's 'Mehrfach Verknallt.org' (Smith & Smart vs. Missy Elliott vs. Justin Timberlake vs. Shakira vs. Black Eyed Peas vs. Reel 2 Real), & Ed Home's 'Let Good Music Passieren' (Smith & Smart vs. Beats International vs. Usher feat. Ludacris) hammer home excellent mixing with strong appeal over & over again. This collection will interest everyone internationally.
The next album holds special delight for me as I collected & released it. 'The Best Of Sound-Unsound Top 10 Countdown Album' ( sound-unsoundtop10countdown.blogspot.com/2010/02/best-of-sound-unsound-top-10-countdown.html ) collects each of the number one tracks from the popular weekly Sound-Unsound Radio show 'Sound-Unsound Top 10 Countdown' ( sound-unsoundtop10countdown.blogspot.com/ ). The first 14 episodes I had the honour of hosting myself. Now with brand-new host DJ Petrushka stepping in to share her mic charms, we thought it a great point to release an overview album of what makes the show essential bootleg listening. On this free album, you'll hear keeper gems like DJ Spider's 'Beat That Boom Boom Pow' (Michael Jackson vs Black Eyed Peas), Mr. Wyse's remix of Orange Juice's 'Rip It Up', & Colatron's 'A Happy Heavenly Day' (Orbital vs Halcyon vs Belinda Carlisle vs Opus III). I not only enjoyed hosting & collecting this batch, but I mastered the project & drew the cover! These are all time & audience-etsted tracks that will rock your world! New shows every Sunday on Sound-Unsound Radio.
Lastly I present to you my long-finished 'IP3-INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA 3' ( groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2010/02/dj-useo-ip3-intense-psychedelia-3-full.html ) , the third album in this mind-blowing series. It's a combination of my previously-released psych-rock mashups with a good handful of brand new previously unreleased tracks. If you heard either of the first 2 'INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA' albums you know what to expect. Contained under pressure in this new album are tracks like 'Learning To Rock' (Pink Floyd vs Burn In Noise), 'Detachable Ballerup' (King Missile vs Annoying Ninjas), & 'Revolution Neutrino Forever' (Beatles vs Klaatu). I mainly do this genre of mix for my own personal enjoyment, but the download numbers tell a story of large appeal to many others. Grab it now before the fun police put the kibosh to it. lol. A special feature of the 'INTENSE PSYCHEDELIA' series are the animated, heavily-psychedelic covers from ANDY_S. Check out this new moving gif cover here ( i85.photobucket.com/albums/k67/useo8/DJ%20Useo%20Covers%202/DJUSEO-IP3.gif?t=1266786811 ).
Who would have thought such musical joy would exist in this modern age of recast music. Enjoy them & please leave comments for the mixers. They don't get to sell these records, so your feedback is the currency they crave.
This weeks featured mix just happens to be the latest Useo happening as well. 'DJ Useo-Channel X - experimental mix' is not really music, but more of an aural adventure in mixing. Before you say 'nay' glom onto this comment on the mix from phenomenal mixer, Warvadal - "This is Great. Mind-bending…Thought enducing to the MAX".See for yourself what this one-of-a-kind mix is like here ( www.bmbx.org/2010/02/channel-x/ ).

Protest Dolphin Film Cancellation
Japanese Pundits
Fifty-five journalists, academics and film directors in Japan condemned intimidation and threats that led movie theaters to cancel screenings of "The Cove," a documentary about the slaughter of dolphins in a Japanese village.
Three movie theaters that had been scheduled to show the film later this month canceled their plans last week after receiving a flood of angry phone calls and warnings of protests by nationalists, who have been screaming slogans outside the Tokyo office of the Japanese distributor in recent months.
Movie director Hirokazu Koreeda, journalist Soichiro Tahara and feinist Chizuko Uneo were among the 55 public personalities who signed a protest letter in which they said they were alarmed by the intimidation tactics used to pressure theaters to cancel the planned screenings.
"This is a film that has been widely shown abroad. If the work, which is about Japan, cannot be shown in Japan, it only underlines the weakness of the freedom of speech in Japan," they said in the statement sent to media and Unplugged on Monday.

Being Returned To US
75 Long-Lost Silent Movies
A cache of 75 long-lost silent films uncovered in the New Zealand Film Archive vault, including the only known copy of a drama by legendary director John Ford, is being sent back to the United States to be restored.
Among the movies found in storage are a copy of Ford's "Upstream," the earliest surviving movie by comic actor and director Mabel Normand and a period drama starring 1920s screen icon Clara Bow. Only 15 percent of the silent films made by Ford, who won four Oscars, have survived.
Film Archive corporate services manager Steve Russell said the films were discovered when American preservationist Brian Meacham visited last year. Many of them remained in New Zealand because distributors at the time did not think the return shipping costs were worth the expense, he said.
Because they were printed on unstable and highly inflammable nitrate film stock, "there are very strict conditions when sending it by air," he added.
"We're having to ship in U.N.-approved steel barrels, a little bit at a time," said foundation director Annette Melville. "So far, we've got about one-third of the films, and preservation work has already begun on four titles."

Canada's Walk of Fame
Stars will be minted for Sarah Polley, Nelly Furtado, Eric McCormack, Farley Mowat, Clara Hughes, David Clayton-Thomas and the late Doug Henning, named Tuesday as this year's inductees to Canada's Walk of Fame.
Established in 1998, the annual awards recognize achievements in music, sport, film and television, as well as the literary, visual and performing arts, and science and innovation.
The program is also designed to encourage young Canadians to think big, said president Peter Soumalias.

US Lawmakers Honor
Jacques Cousteau
US lawmakers offered homage Tuesday to French explorer and marine ecologist Jacques Cousteau with a resolution recognizing what would be his 100th birthday this week.
A resolution set for a vote in the House of Representatives hails Cousteau, who died in 1997, as a "pioneer in the field of marine conservation."
The French explorer, who produced hundreds of TV shows, books and films, would have been 100 on June 11.
Cousteau's grandson, Philippe Cousteau Jr., who heads a US-based ecology group called EarthEcho International, said recently his grandfather would have been "horrified" by the devastation being wrought by a huge Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Unpublished Works Found
Stieg Larsson
Several unpublished manuscripts by Stieg Larsson, the Swedish crime author who died before his "Millennium" trilogy became a global cult hit, have surfaced in Stockholm, Sweden's national library said Tuesday.
"We have received material from a small archive from a periodical called the Jules Verne Magazine, and in that small archive there were some manuscripts by the author Stieg Larsson that were never published," Sweden's deputy national librarian Magdalena Gram told AFP.
The manuscripts, written around 1970 when Larsson was just 17, were "in the science fiction genre" and had been sent to magazines in hope of publication, Gram said.

Last year Brown was sentenced to five years' probation and six months of community service for the beating of his then-girlfriend, R&B singing sensation Rihanna.
The Home Office said Brown applied for his visa last week and should have been notified of its refusal Monday.

California GOP
A Republican primary season marked by a blistering campaign spending spree and less-is-more approach to government comes to an end Tuesday with two wealthy businesswomen poised to make history for the GOP.
Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina have become the front-runners to lead the Republican Party this fall. If the most recent polls hold, it would be the first time the party would have put a woman - much less two - at the top of its ticket in the nation's most populous state.
Whitman has built a wide lead over her rival for the Republican nomination for governor, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, thanks in large part to spending from her personal fortune. The billionaire has spent $81 million so far, all but about $10 million of it from her own bank account.
Fiorina has had a come-from-behind story in her race for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, greatly outspending her two challengers. She also has appealed to conservative voters with her views on abortion, guns and gay marriage but will face a difficult task trying to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer if she emerges victorious in Tuesday's primary.

Work Release Conditions Held Up Deal
Charlie Sheen
A disagreement over the terms of Charlie Sheen's proposed work release has held up a plea deal in his domestic abuse case, according to a lawyer involved in the negotiations.
Attorney Yale Galanter said Tuesday that the final paperwork submitted to a judge would have placed Sheen under more stringent rules while out of jail of working, including not being able to smoke. He would only be allowed to eat meals provided by the jail or face sanctions.
Galanter, who represents Sheen's wife, says that wasn't the plea deal they had hammered out with Pitkin County authorities.
He says the smoking restrictions were a small part of the disagreement. He said Sheen had been approved to get nicotine patches while in custody.

Judge Sets New Bail
Lindsay Lohan
A judge on Tuesday doubled Lindsay Lohan's bail to $200,000 after finding the actress violated the terms of her release with an adverse report by an ankle alcohol bracelet.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel determined Lohan was in violation after a closed-door meeting with the actress' attorney and a prosecutor Tuesday afternoon. Revel did not detail the violation, but said her decision was made after receiving "results" issued by a court-ordered alcohol monitor.
Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, did not speak to reporters after the hearing. Neither did Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers, who is handling Lohan's case.
Lohan has been required to wear the device since May, when she missed a court hearing. Lohan is due back in court on July 6, when Revel will decide whether Lohan has violated her probation.

Loses At Patent Office
TiVo
The U.S. patent office rejected two patent claims by video recording technology company TiVo in a battle with Dish Network and EchoStar over digital video recorders.
TiVo said it would press on with its legal fight but its shares fell 5.5 percent on Tuesday to close at $7.70.
It has accused EchoStar, maker of digital set-top boxes and spun off by pay-television provider Dish, of infringing technology used in TiVo's "Time Warp" software, which allows users to record one television program while watching another.
TiVo also has lawsuits against AT&T Inc, Verizon Communications Inc and Microsoft Corp.

Europe Court Rules In Book Dispute
Turkey
Turkey was punished by the European Court of Human Rights because of the seizure of a book about a pop star that discussed his sexual orientation, the court said on Tuesday.
"Tarkan - Anatomy of a Star" was first published in 2001 in Istanbul by Ozcan Sapan, a 50-year-old editor. The first part of the book discussed the phenomenon of stardom, the second part focused on Tarkan, a hugely popular singer. It also contained photographs.
Unhappy with several passages which alluded to his sexual orientation and his effeminate style, Tarkan took the publisher to court and obtained a seizure of the book. The court gave no explanation for its verdict.
The publisher challenged the decision, and in 2004 obtained a lifting of the seizure on the grounds that the disputed passages, which were drawn from sociological research, were not aimed at undermining the singer.

Shocking - They're Lying!
BP
While BP is capturing more oil from its blown-out well with every passing day, scientists on a team analyzing the flow said Tuesday that the amount of crude still escaping into the Gulf of Mexico may be considerably greater than what the government and the company have claimed.
Their assertions - combined with BP's rush to build a bigger cap and its apparent difficulty in immediately processing all the oil being collected - have only added to the impression that BP and the government are still floundering in dealing with the catastrophe and may be misleading the public.
In an interview with The Associated Press, team member and Purdue University engineering professor Steve Wereley said it was a "reasonable conclusion" but not the team's final one to say that the daily flow rate is, in fact, somewhere between 798,000 gallons and 1.8 million gallons.

"Iconic" Dress Fetches $276,000 At Auction
Princess Diana
The black taffeta dress worn by Princess Diana at her first official appearance with Prince Charles after announcing their engagement fetched 192,000 pounds ($276,000), or nearly four times the high-end estimate, at a London auction on Tuesday.
The dress, which auctioneer Kerry Taylor described as "iconic," had been expected to sell for 30-50,000 pounds.
It was part of a collection of clothes being sold by designers Elizabeth Emanuel and David Emanuel and was bought by fashion museum the Fundacion Museo De La Moda in Chile.

States Closing As Arrests Plunge
Youth Prisons
After struggling for years to treat young criminals in razor wire-ringed institutions, states across the country are quietly shuttering dozens of reformatories amid plunging juvenile arrests, softer treatment policies and bleak budgets.
In Ohio, the number of juvenile offenders has plummeted by nearly half over the last two years, pushing the state to close three facilities. California's closures include a youth institution near Los Angeles that operated for nearly 115 years. And one in Texas will finally go quiet after getting its start as a World War II-era training base.
During the early 1990s, though, tough-on-crime legislators turned to the juvenile system. Nearly every state lowered the minimum age for kids to be tried as adults or increased the kind of crimes that land kids in the adult system.
But juvenile arrest rates dropped, falling 33 percent between 1997 and 2008, according to the latest U.S. Justice Department data.

Parts On Display
Galileo
A tooth, thumb and finger cut off from the body of renowned Italian scientist Galileo, who died in 1642, go on display this week in Florence after an art collector found them by chance last year.
The body parts, along with another finger and a vertebrae, were cut from Galileo's corpse by scientists and historians during a burial ceremony 95 years after his death.
"The laymen and masons that were attending the ceremony thought that they should have some souvenir of Galileo's body," Paolo Galluzzi, director of Florence's Galileo Museum, told Reuters in an interview.
The remains, along with two telescopes, a compass and a wealth of other instruments designed by Galileo, are the main attraction at the refurbished -- and renamed -- Galileo Museum, which reopens on June 10 after two years of renovation work.

Caves of Altamira
A cave complex boasting prized prehistoric paintings will reopen after eight years of closure, despite scientists' warnings that heat and moisture from human visitors damage the site known as the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art.
The Culture Ministry and the site's board of directors said Tuesday that visits to the Caves of Altamira in the northern Cantabria region will resume next year, although on a still-unspecified, restricted basis.
The main chamber at Altamira features 21 bison painted in red and black, which appear to be to charging against a low, limestone ceiling. The site was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1985. The paintings are estimated to be 14,000 to 20,000 years old.
Discovered in 1868, the cave complex became a tourist magnet and by the 1970s received 3,000 visitors a day. Body heat and moisture from people's breath were blamed for a gradual deterioration of the images, and from 1982-2002 only a handul of visits were allowed each day.

Teacher Finds 1792 Document
Michelle Eugenio
A Massachusetts teacher cleaning up her classroom in preparation for a move has discovered a Colonial-era document buried in a pile of outdated textbooks and dusty scraps of papers.
Michelle Eugenio, a fourth-grade teacher in Peabody, Mass., found the yellowed sheet of paper two weeks ago. Dated April 1792 and protected by plastic, it appears to document the payment of a debt by a Vermont man named Jonathan Bates.
Peabody Historical Society President Bill Power verified the paper's authenticity. He tells The Salem News he was thrilled with the discovery.
Bates served in the Continental Army in 1780 and died in 1808 at age 63. He's buried in Williamstown, Vt.

In Memory
Jack Harrison
Jack Harrison, who survived the Great Escape plot by Allied prisoners in a German prison in World War II, has died at age 97, his family said.
As one of the camp's gardeners, Harrison helped dispose of the dirt excavated from three escape tunnels. He was 98th on the list of some 200 inmates designated to make the escape on March 24, 1944, but only 76 got away before guards detected the breakout and raised the alarm.
The breakout was celebrated in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" starring Steve McQueen and James Garner.
Only three men managed to reach safety. Adolf Hitler ordered the execution of 50 recaptured escapers, and 23 others were returned to custody.
Harrison was a Royal Air Force pilot who was shot down and captured in November 1942 on his first mission, a raid on the Dutch port of Den Helder. He was taken to Stalag Luft III prison near Sagan in eastern Germany - now Zagan, Poland.
After the war, Harrison resumed his teaching career. He retired in 1975 as director of education for the isle of Bute.
"To others he was considered a war hero, but to us he was much more than that. He was a family man first and foremost as well as a church elder, Rotarian, scholar, traveler and athlete," his son Chris and daughter Jane said in a statement.
They said Harrison took up marathon running in his seventies to raise money for charity.
