Anecdotes
Work
• Oscar Wilde once worked for a women’s magazine, The Lady’s World. After reviewing the magazine, he convinced its publisher to change its name to The Woman’s World and he changed its content from only what women wear to more of what women think and feel. After a couple of years, he left the magazine. Shortly before leaving, he was asked how much time he spent working at the magazine. Mr. Wilde replied, “I used to go three times a week for an hour a day, but I have since struck off one of the days.”
• Sometimes set designers want scenes that are impossible to build. Carpenter Frank Kirby tells of a designer who wanted a piece suspended over the stage. His model had the piece suspended by a wire, but he said he didn’t want the piece suspended by a wire because the audience could see it. Mr. Kirby told him, “You do it. When you can get it to stay up on the model without any support, we’ll get it to stay up on the stage.”
• Suzanne Farrell and her male partner were having technical difficulties during a choreography session with George Balanchine. Correcting the technical difficulties took precious time, so Ms. Farrell telephoned Mr. Balanchine to apologize: “Oh, George, I’m so sorry that you have to work so hard to make us look good.” He replied, “Don’t worry, dear. I have to work hard to make everybody look good.”
• James McNeill Whistler, the famous painter, held several jobs early in his career, at which he was always late — in the opinion of his co-workers. Mr. Whistler’s opinion was different: “I was not too late; the office opened too early.”
Alcohol
• Comedian Jay Leno doesn’t drink, smoke, or use illegal drugs. When Mavis Nicholson, who became his wife, asked for a drink early in their relationship, she almost did not become his wife. He told her, “Look, let me give you the money, and you can buy a blouse or something. I don’t want to buy you a drink.” With the $35 he gave her, she bought a blouse. (Mavis says, “I can’t begin to tell you how absolutely peculiar I thought that was.”)
• Olivia Pound’s father was a Nebraska judge in the 19th century. One day, an alcoholic lawyer attempted to argue a case before him, even though the lawyer was obviously inebriated. The judge listened for a few minutes, then banged his gavel and ruled, “This case is postponed for two weeks. The lawyer is trying to practice before two bars at the same time. It can’t be done.”
Animals
• When Darci Kistler, a ballerina for the New York City Ballet, was growing up, her family had a pet alligator named Iggy. One day, Iggy got loose and made his way into the family swimming pool, where the family had a terrible time trying to catch him. Every time a family member tried to catch Iggy with a net, Iggy crushed the net in his jaws. Darci was relieved when Iggy was finally captured and returned to the pet store — she had noticed Iggy eying the family’s dog and cat in a suspiciously hungry manner. Other family pets included snakes — once a boa constrictor was loose in the Kistler family house for a week.
• On his TV show House Party, Art Linkletter interviewed a little girl whose fish had recently died. He asked whether the fish had gone to fish heaven, but the little girl replied, “No, I threw him down the toilet.”
Automobiles
• As a child, future Secretary of State Madeleine Albright traveled with her family as they moved to Denver, Colorado — a city that is known as the “Mile-High City” because it is one mile above sea level. Approaching the city, young Madeleine waited for the road to steeply climb one mile skyward, not realizing that the car had been gradually climbing higher for a long time.
• Comedian Jay Leno really, really likes cars and motorcycles. In fact, his huge garage looks like a warehouse because it is so filled with his vehicular possessions. Still, whenever his mother visited him and wanted to borrow a car, he would tell her, “Mother, I’ll rent you a car.”

‘Unburnable’ Copy Auctioned For $130,000
Handmaid’s Tale
A specially commissioned, unburnable edition of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been auctioned for $130,000, Sotheby’s announced Tuesday.
Proceeds will be donated to PEN America, which advocates for free expression worldwide. The 384-page book consists mainly of Cinefoil, a specially treated aluminum product, and was announced last month at PEN’s annual fundraising gala. To help promote the initiative, Atwood agreed to be filmed attempting — unsuccessfully — to incinerate a prototype with a flame thrower.
“I’m very pleased that the one-of-a-kind Unburnable Book of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ has raised so much money for PEN America,” the Canadian author said in a statement. “Free speech issues are being hotly debated, and PEN is a sane voice amidst all the shouting. The video of the book being torched by me and refusing to burn has now had a potential 5 billion views. We hope it raises awareness and leads to reasoned discussion.”
The fireproof book was a joint project by PEN, Atwood, Penguin Random House and two companies based in Toronto, where Atwood is a longtime resident: the Rethink creative agency and The Gas Company Inc., a graphic arts and bookbinding specialty studio. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a million seller first released in 1985, is a Dystopian novel about a cruel patriarchy known as the Republic of Gilead. It has been subject to various bannings since publication.

Meets Ukrainian Teen
John Cena
A Ukrainian teenager with Down syndrome has met his hero John Cena, the pro-wrestler turned actor who motivated him as he escaped the besieged city of Mariupol.
In an article published by the Wall Street Journal, Misha Rohozhyn met the Peacemaker star in Huizen, Netherlands, where Misha is seeking refuge with his family. According to his mother Liana, the two created a “motivational fantasy” with the promise that John Cena would be waiting at the end of their dangerous journey out of Ukraine.
Back in Mariupol, posters of Cena had covered Misha’s walls in the family apartment, which is now destroyed by bombing. Upon arriving in the Netherlands last month, the 19-year-old felt angry and disappointed that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star was nowhere to be found. That is, until Cena travelled to the Netherlands himself last weekend.
John Cena had learned about Misha’s story in May, when the 19-year-old was the subject of a previous WSJ article. Before escaping Mariupol in early March, Misha and his family were seeking refuge at a day center, along with many other people with disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism.
On Saturday, Cena visited Misha at the family’s temporary accommodation outside of Amsterdam. When the pro-wrestler stepped out of the car, he hugged Misha and gave him a WWE belt and other memorabilia. The two ate traditional Ukrainian honey cake and played building blocks with the other children at the refugee center.

‘Bewitched’ Statue Vandalized
Salem
In the wiggle of a nose, a man partially covered the “Bewitched” statue in Salem with red paint, police said.
Witnesses called police at about 5 p.m. Monday to report someone spray painting the bronze statue, Capt. John Burke said Tuesday. The statue depicts actor Elizabeth Montgomery — as lead character Samantha Stephens in the 1960s sitcom — sitting on a broomstick in front of a crescent moon.
An officer in the area spotted a man fitting witness descriptions of the vandal and after a brief chase arrested a 32-year-old city resident on charges of defacing property, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, Burke said.
The suspect, who was “going through a rough time and wanted to do something to get arrested” according to a prosecutor, was held on $500 bail at Tuesday’s arraignment. His attorney said he has been living in a shelter for two weeks since his marriage ended, and has been looking for a new job.

Texas teacher whose 11 students were killed says active shooting training set the children up for the shooter
A wounded Texas teacher whose 11 students were killed in the May 24 mass shooting in Uvalde said active shooting training set the children up "like ducks" for the gunman.
"It all happened too fast. Training, no training, all kinds of training — nothing gets you ready for this," Arnulfo Reyes told Good Morning America in an emotional interview that aired on Tuesday.
"We trained our kids to sit under the table, and that's what I thought at the time. But we set them up to be like ducks," a visibly upset Reyes said. "You can give us all the training you want, but laws have to change."
Reyes told GMA that he felt "absolutely" abandoned by police that day and said there's "no excuse for their actions."

Found Guilty
Todd and Julie Chrisley
Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the reality television show “Chrisley Knows Best,” were found guilty Tuesday in Atlanta on federal charges including bank fraud and tax evasion.
The Chrisleys were initially indicted in August 2019 and a new indictment was filed in February of this year. Their trial began about three weeks ago, and a jury found the pair guilty of all charges Tuesday, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Atlanta. They will be sentenced at a later date.
They used a film production company they controlled to hide income to keep the IRS from collecting unpaid taxes owed by Todd Chrisley, prosecutors said.
Both Chrisleys were charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and tax fraud. Julie Chrisley was also charged with wire fraud and obstruction of justice.

Melting Point
Platinum
Scientists have figured out how to make platinum more affordable as a catalyst: turn it into a low-temperature liquid.
It's been known for centuries that noble metals like platinum, gold, ruthenium, and palladium make excellent catalysts for chemical reactions, because they help break the chemical bonds between atoms more efficiently than other metals.
But noble metals are rare and expensive, so large-scale industrial manufacturers generally opt for cheaper, less effective alternatives like iron. (Iron is used as a catalyst in the mass production of fertilizer, for instance.)
The downside to using poorer quality catalysts is that chemical reactions must be heated up to high temperatures, which increases the carbon footprint for many industrial processes.
In a record-breaking achievement, researchers from UNSW Sydney and RMIT in Australia have dissolved platinum in liquid gallium, splitting the platinum atoms up so that there was more catalytic potential in a smaller amount of platinum.

Reaction To ‘Batman Forever’ Nipple Suit
Tim Burton
Tim Burton has chimed on on one of the longest-running DC comics controversies: the nipples that appeared on the hallowed Batsuit in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
Burton birthed the bigscreen Batman franchise for DC and Warner Bros. with 1989’s Batman and its sequel Batman Returns which, for some used to the campy small-screen antics of Adam West and Burt Ward, seemed too dark, “too weird,” as Burton describes the reaction. The studio then chose Schumacher, who returned the Caped Crusader to the campy confection he was on TV.
“They went the other way,” Burton recently told Empire Magazine. “That’s the funny thing about it. But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay. Hold on a second here. You complain about me, I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go f*ck yourself.’ Seriously. So yeah, I think that’s why I didn’t end up [doing another film in the series].”
Much ink has been spilled about the suit, worn by Val Kilmer in Batman Forever and George Clooney in Batman & Robin.
“I wasn’t thrilled with the nipples on the batsuit,” Clooney said in 2014. “You know that’s not something you really think about when you’re putting it on. You figure all batsuits have nipples and then you realize yours was really the first. Batman was just constantly cold I guess.”
