Anecdotes
Names
• Names and nicknames can be interesting. When he was 15 years old, Anton Dolin studied under dance teacher Nicolas Legat, who always called him by the nickname “Piccadilly.” Mr. Dolin didn’t understand the meaning of the nickname until they were traveling on a bus together. When the bus passed Piccadilly Circus, Mr. Legat pointed in its direction, and Mr. Dolin saw that he was pointing at a status of Eros. By the way, opera singer Birgit Nilsson’s last name came from her father, Nils. In Sweden, sometimes a child — even a girl — is given the father’s first name, to which son is always — and dotter is never — added. This then becomes the child’s last name.
• The writers of Jackie Gleason’s TV series featuring him as blowhard Ralph Kramden wanted to call the series The Beast, because they felt that Ralph was like an animal. However, Mr. Gleason felt that love was a major element of the show and underlay the arguments between Ralph and his wife Alice, so he insisted that it be called The Honeymooners.
Performing
• Dancer Agnes de Mille auditioned for impresario Billy Rose early in her career. She danced for hours in different costumes and wigs, she paid the accompanist and the dresser, and her effort was immense; however, no job offer materialized after the audition. A little later, Ms. de Mille’s choreography for Rodeo was a hit when it premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on 16 October 1942, and Mr. Rose asked about her, “Where has she been? Who discovered her? She can’t have just sprung to this eminence from nowhere. She must have been somewhere. Where did she hide herself?”
• The first duet ever performed by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn was a North African dance which received great applause after each performance — until they danced it in Topeka, Kansas. At the end of the dance, the audience was completely silent for a long time — until a member of the audience said with feeling: “Jesus!” Afterwards, Mr. Shawn told the story of the dance’s Topeka reception to Ethel Barrymore, who commented that the audience’s reaction to the dance was “a very great tribute.”
Politics
• In 1931, Robert Benchley, Lewis Milestone, and Douglas Fairbanks were in Italy, when they decided to pay a visit on Benito Mussolini. Because Mr. Fairbanks was a huge movie star, a visit was arranged, but when they arrived at the appointed time, they were told that Mussolini could not see them for a half-hour. They replied that they were too busy to wait, and departed, leaving behind a startled bureaucrat.
• Once a woman complained to Sir Winston Churchill that she didn’t like either his politics or his moustache. Sir Winston replied, “Madame, you are unlikely to come into contact with either.”
Practical Jokes
• Russell Johnson, who played the Professor on Gilligan’s Island, had the hardest lines to learn because so much of what he said was scientific. One day, as a practical joke, the series’ producer, Sherwood Schwartz, wrote out a half page of scientific-sounding gibberish and told Mr. Johnson to memorize it for the next day’s shooting. The next day, to Mr. Schwartz’s surprise, Mr. Johnson was letter-perfect in his recitation of the gibberish. (Mr. Johnson had suspected the practical joke and had stayed up half the night to learn his lines.) By the way, in 1986, Mr. Johnson was invited to speak at Park College in Missouri. He got a kick out of the posters for his lecture: Underneath a picture of his face were the words, “See a real Professor speak.”
• Gladys Cooper once wrecked a theatrical performance with a series of practical jokes. One actor lit an exploding cigar. The actresses who were supposed to eat cookies on stage were given cookies with flannel inside them. An actress who was supposed to eat an apple discovered that the apple was made of soap. Actor Gerald du Maurier witnessed these practical jokes and worried that he would be the next victim. His character was given a parcel on stage, and he thought that when he opened the parcel, something might fly out. Relieved to discover that the parcel was not booby-trapped, he sat down on a cushioned chair — which was rigged to emit a series of squeaks.

Putin Joke
Putin dies and goes to hell, but after a while, he is given a day off for good behavior.
So he goes to Moscow, enters a bar, orders a drink, and asks the bartender:
“Is Crimea ours?”
“Yes, it is.”
“And the Donbas?”
“Also ours.”
“And Kyiv?”
“We got that too.”
Satisfied, Putin drinks, and asks:
“Thanks, how much do I owe you?”
“5 euros.”

'The Fix Was In'
LeVar Burton
For a few shining months, Jeopardy fans around the world were buoyed by the idea that LeVar Burton would bring his epic knowledge, warmth, and years of hosting experience to the popular quiz show following Alex Trebek's death in 2020.
Ultimately, Burton didn't get the hosting gig, as the role went to former executive producer Mike Richards — and then, when Richards was ousted, to Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings, who share duties. Now Burton is opening up about the controversy surrounding the search for a new Jeopardy host, admitting that he was "not just disappointed, but wrecked" by the outcome.
"Experiencing a very public defeat, humiliation, if you will, was sobering," Burton says in an interview with Newsy's In the Loop airing Wednesday. "And what I learned from the experience, really, is that it reinforced my belief that everything happens for a reason, even if you cannot discern the reason in the moment. In the fullness of time, everything will be revealed. And like I said, it was I think in that first week of feeling really sort of not just disappointed, but wrecked. I didn't expect that I would not be their choice for host."
Burton, who long hoped to succeed Trebek and taped a one-week stint as a Jeopardy guest host last summer, also intimates that he wasn't ever seriously considered for the full-time job.
"I honestly thought that I was well-suited for it," he says. "As it turns out, it really wasn't a competition, after all, the fix was in."

Elvis Image Bans
Las Vegas
Las Vegas chapels of love that use Elvis Presley’s likeness could find themselves becoming Heartbreak Hotels.
The licensing company that controls the name and image of “The King” is ordering Sin City chapel operators to stop using Elvis in themed ceremonies, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Monday. Authentic Brands Group sent cease-and-desist letters earlier this month to multiple chapels, saying they must comply by the end of May.
With Elvis so closely tied to Vegas’ wedding industry, some say the move could decimate their businesses.
“We are a family-run business, and now we’re hanging with the big dogs,” said Kayla Collins, who operates LasVegasElvisWeddingChapel.com and the Little Chapel of Hearts with her husband. “That’s our bread and butter. I don’t get it. We were just hitting our stride again through COVID, then this happens.”
Clark County Clerk Lynn Goya, who led a marketing campaign promoting Las Vegas as a wedding destination, said the order for chapels to stop using Elvis couldn’t have come at a worse time for the sector.

'Unicorn' LGBTQ Soldiers
Ukraine
As volunteer fighters Oleksandr Zhuhan and Antonina Romanova pack for a return to active duty, they contemplate the unicorn insignia that gives their uniform a rare distinction - a symbol of their status as an LGBTQ couple who are Ukrainian soldiers.
Members of Ukraine's LGBTQ community who sign up for the war have taken to sewing the image of the mythical beast into their standard-issue epaulettes just below the national flag.
The practice harks back to the 2014 conflict when Russia invaded then annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, "when lots of people said there are no gay people in the army," actor, director and drama teacher Zhuhan told Reuters as he and Romanova dressed in their apartment for their second three-month combat rotation.
"So they (the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community) chose the unicorn because it is like a fantastic 'non-existent' creature."

No ‘Speck’ Of Proof
Mrs. Palin
The judge who presided over Mrs. Palin’s libel case against The New York Times denied her request Tuesday for a new trial, saying she failed to introduce “even a speck” of evidence necessary to prove actual malice by the newspaper.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff made the assertion in a written decision as he rejected post-trial claims from Palin’s lawyers.
“In actuality, none of these was erroneous, let alone a basis for granting Palin a new trial,” the judge said.
Rakoff wrote that regardless of her post-trial motions, Palin was required at a trial earlier this year to show that an error in a published editorial was motivated by actual malice — a requirement in libel lawsuits involving public figures.
“And the striking thing about the trial here was that Palin, for all her earlier assertions, could not in the end introduce even a speck of such evidence,” he said.

Ed R. Levin County Park
Milpitas
A man died and a woman was seriously injured on Monday in a hang gliding accident at a San Francisco Bay Area Park, officials said.
The incident occurred at about noon at Ed R. Levin County Park in Milpitas when two people were tandem hang gliding and the glider crashed into a hillside, the Milpitas Fire Department said.
The pair took off from the 1750 launch site, the highest launch point at the park, the fire department said in a news release.
Ed R. Levin County Park is a popular spot for hang gliding in the San Francisco Bay Area and it's one of five local sites manages by the Wings of Rogallo Northern California Hang Glider Association. The location is open to hang glider pilots of all levels. There are several requirements to hang glide at the park including membership with the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association and being under the guidance of an instructor or have the appropriate pilot rating and experience.
Milpitas
A long, long time ago I worked at a hang gliding shop in Fremont and Ed Levin Park, or 'Sled Heaven' as the boys used to call it,
was the 'home' site. Students were started on the beach at Bodega Bay, then graduated to Ed Levin, and finally, Fort Funston.
Are Different Colours
Uranus and Neptune
Scientists have explained why, despite having much in common, Uranus and Neptune have very different appearances.
The furthest two planets in the Solar System have similar masses, sizes, and atmospheric compositions – yet Neptune looks distinctly bluer than its neighbour.
New research, led by Professor Patrick Irwin at the University of Oxford, suggests a layer of haze on both planets is behind the different hues.
Both would appear almost equally blue if there were no haze in their atmospheres, the study suggests.

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse Betelgeuse
Over the last couple of years, Ars has dedicated a fair number of electrons to our local red supergiant, Betelgeuse. The massive star went through an odd uneven dimming, leaving the astronomy community scrambling for explanations and observation time. While a degree of consensus slowly emerged, the lack of some key details left a lot unexplained.
It turns out that some of the answers were accidentally captured by an Earth-facing Japanese weather satellite that had Betelgeuse in-frame across the entire process of its dimming.
In the new paper describing the results, Daisuke Taniguchi, Kazuya Yamazaki, and Shinsuke Uno say the astronomy community has settled on two options for explaining why a giant star like Betelgeuse might get dimmer. One is that internal processes could lower the star's effective temperature and thus its light output. The other option is that dust ends up between the star and Earth, absorbing some of the star's light. But both of those explanations are short on details; we don't really know what's happening inside the star or how enough dust could end up between Betelgeuse and Earth.
Himawari-8 is a geostationary satellite that, starting in 2015, has been regularly imaging Earth in visible and infrared wavelengths. Inevitably, some of those images contain the stars near the Earth's rim from the satellite's perspective. One of those stars was Betelgeuse, which shows up about once every day and a half. So, thanks to Himawari-8, we have about 4.5 years of observations of the star at visible and infrared wavelengths.
