M Is FOR MASHUP - May 28th, 2014
May 2014 Excellent Mashup Albums
By DJ Useo
I was mentioning last week how there is always a Summer slowdown on the net, especially for mashups. My plan has been to post regularly, so as to keep people interested, and maintain some audience. Since last weeks' article, I've seen others are seemingly embracing the same strategy. There's been a huge influx of single tracks, and plenty of full mashup albums. Allow me to present some of the best albums, and whatever comments the posters have to offer.
01-Chocomang - "Italo-Disco vs Metal Album" - Chocomang says - "Do you remember ? In the 80's between 1983 and 1985, while the United States was banging heads over 80's hard rock, Italo-disco suddenly invaded Europe, taking the top of the charts. In 1986, the Italo-disco wave was over and the genre was definitely cheesy. Maybe you were not born yet, and you didn't had the opportunity to live this incredible moment in music history. Or maybe you're nostalgic about the incredible sound of electronic drums ! Don't Panic, I 'm here to bring Italo-disco back to life, but this time it is mixed with Metal acapellas, because it's fun and I like Metal music. Some intros were modified for soundcloud. Please download the original versions at my web site.

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.

New Album
Queen
Queen is planning to release a new album of previously unheard Freddie Mercury vocals from the '80s, the band's guitarist Brian May has revealed.
In an interview with BBC Radio, May said, "We found a few more tracks with Freddie singing and all of us playing, and they're quite beautiful. People will be hearing this work toward the end of the year."
May said the material will mainly be from the 1980s with the album most likely titled as "Queen Forever."
This summer, Queen will be heading out on a 19-date tour with Adam Lambert beginning June 19 in Chicago.

Releases Metal Album
Christopher Lee
Horror film legend Christopher Lee, who turned 92 on Tuesday, is celebrating the milestone by releasing a heavy rock mini-album entitled "Metal Knight".
The Dracula actor is a long-time devotee of heavy metal -- a genre partly inspired by the sort of horror films he starred in -- and has already several album releases under his belt.
"I associate heavy metal with fantasy because of the tremendous power that the music delivers," explained Lee, who possesses a booming, classically-trained bass voice.
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi presented the "Lord of the Rings" star with the Spirit of Metal prize at the Golden Gods Awards in 2010 for his services to metal music.
In December, the "Star Wars" actor became the oldest ever performer to place in the US Billboard singles chart with his record "Jingle Hell".

Finally Adopts State Fossil
South Carolina
The Columbian mammoth became the official state fossil of South Carolina on Tuesday, fulfilling a third-grader's dream, after months of delay stemming from efforts by some lawmakers (R-Sanctimonious) to give God credit for creating the prehistoric animal.
Olivia McConnell, 8, of New Zion, watched with her mother, classmates and teachers as Governor Nikki Haley signed the designation into law.
Olivia had written to her state legislator to point out that the state had no official fossil and suggested the animal because in 1725 slaves had dug up a tooth from a Columbian woolly mammoth on a South Carolina plantation.
The bill passed the state House in March, but legislators (R-Self-Righteous) tried to add amendments referring to the book of Genesis and God's creation of the earth and the beasts.
State residents pleaded for senators to keep religion out of science, and the simple designation bill eventually emerged from the legislature free of amendments.

Go For Sale
Buried Gold
A treasure trove of rare gold coins that were discovered by a California couple out walking their dog last year are set to go on sale. The nearly 1,430 coins date from 1847 to 1894 and have been valued at more than $11 million. One will be auctioned at the Old San Francisco Mint on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. Most of the rest will go on sale on Amazon.com and Kagin's.com later at night.
Experts say paper money was illegal in California until the 1870s, so it's extremely rare to find any coins from before that period. Additionally, most of the coins are in mint condition, having been stashed away seemingly immediately after they were minted. They were valued by Don Kagin, a numismatist who is handling the sale and marketing of the coins.
Kagin says the couple - a middle-aged husband and wife - does not want to be identified in part to avoid a gold rush on their rural Northern California property by modern-day prospectors. They discovered the coins in eight cans buried in the shadow of an old tree on the property. They plan to keep a few of the coins themselves and use the money from the rest to pay off bills and donate to local charities. Money from Tuesday's auction will benefit the effort to turn the Old Mint into a museum.
The treasure consists of four $5 gold pieces, fifty $10 gold pieces, and 1,373 $20 double eagles. Among the coins that will be on display Tuesday is the crown jewel of the collection - an 1866-S No Motto $20 gold piece valued at more than $1 million.

Army Of Revolving-Door Lobbyists
Comcast
Every big company tries to snag former Washington insiders for its lobbying team; the revolving door, after all, is what makes public service a stepping stone to personal wealth in the modern age.
But the cable giant Comcast has been especially aggressive in vacuuming up former congressional aides and Federal Communications Commission staff members -- even a former FCC commissioner -- as company lobbyists.
18 people have both lobbied for Comcast and spent time in the public sector...12 are currently registered lobbyists for Comcast, with five of them having spent time at the FCC.- OpenSecrets.org
Many of them are now fully engaged on the company's biggest venture: its $45-billion takeover of Time Warner Cable. The deal would widen Comcast's lead as the nation's biggest cable and Internet provider, but requires the approval of the FCC and the Justice Department's antitrust division and may face questions in Congress.
So, let slip the dogs of war. The sheer scale of Comcast's lobbying effort, which includes lavish campaign contributions to members of Congress, hints at the obstacles that opponents of the merger will face in persuading lawmakers and regulators of the damage this deal will do to the public interest. Don't License Songs To Endorse Products
Beastie Boys
A Beastie Boys rapper says the legendary hip-hop group would never license songs to endorse commercial products.
Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz testified in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday. He was called as the first witness in a lawsuit the group filed against Monster Energy Co., a beverage maker. The lawsuit claims copyright infringement and unfair competition and seeks more than $2 million in damages.
A lawyer for the Corona, California-based company told the jury that Monster Energy "technically did violate the copyright." But the attorney, S. Reid Kahn, said the company should only owe the band between $93,000 and $125,000 for five weeks when the video was online. He said the video had fewer than 14,000 views.
Horovitz is to return to the stand Wednesday.

Monsanto Rules
Roundup
Questions about Roundup, the world's most popular herbicide, are on the agenda at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday when regulators meet with a group of mothers, scientists, environmentalists and others who say they are worried about Roundup residues found in breast milk.
The meeting near Washington D.C., follows a five-day phone call blitz of EPA offices by a group called "Moms Across America" demanding that the EPA pay attention to their demands for a recall of Roundup.
Roundup is a herbicide developed and sold by Monsanto Co. since the 1970s, and used in agriculture and home lawns and gardens. The chief ingredient, glyphosate, is under a standard registration review by the EPA. The agency has set a deadline of 2015 for determining if glyphosate use should continue as is, be limited or halted.
The use of glyphosate in agriculture has jumped dramatically since the mid-1990s after Monsanto started introducing crops genetically engineered to withstand direct sprays of Roundup, so farmers could more easily kill weeds without harming their crops. Glyphosate is sprayed on most of the corn and soybean crops in the United States, as well as over sugar beets, canola and other crops.
Last year, the EPA agreed to raise the permitted tolerance levels for glyphosate residue in food. The agency said at that time that toxicity data and studies it reviewed shows glyphosate is not a cancer risk and is generally safe at the approved levels.

Probes Everest Climb
Nepal
Nepal said on Tuesday it was investigating whether a Chinese woman, this season's sole climber of Mount Everest from the Nepalese side, used a helicopter to reach a high camp after a deadly avalanche last month washed away part of the route.
Using a helicopter would constitute a serious moral violation of tradition in climbing the world's highest peak. But Wang Jing, 40, who completed the climb last Friday, denied she had used the aircraft to advance up the mountain.
Wang completed her climb with five Sherpa guides arranged privately to become the first to go up from the Southeast Ridge route after the deadliest accident in the mountain's history.
Authorities said they were looking into reports that Wang took the helicopter and flew over the route damaged by the avalanche to the site of Camp II at 6,400 meters (20,997 feet).

What Climate Change
Montana Trout
Climate changes that have made Montana streams much warmer over the last 30 years are helping invasive trout push their native cousins toward extinction, researchers said on Tuesday, saying study is an example of global warming reducing biodiversity.
The study led by ecologists with the U.S. Geological Survey links warming streams and reduced spring flows in the Flathead River basin in western Montana and Canada to a sharp rise in interbreeding between rainbow trout introduced by government fishery managers and native westslope cutthroat trout.
The study, published in the latest edition of the journal Nature Climate Change, shows evidence that a warming planet could decrease biodiversity by supporting cross-breeding between invasive and native species, authors said.
Rainbow trout, stocked in Rocky Mountain streams and lakes to lure anglers, fared better than westslope cutthroat during a warming trend in the Flathead basin that saw summer water temperatures nearly triple between 1978 to 2008, the study shows.
While hybridization is a well-established threat to native cutthroat trout in western North America, the study led by USGS ecologist Clint Muhlfeld and others demonstrated how factors such as rising water temperatures influence evolutionary processes by accelerating interbreeding with rainbow trout and corrupting the natural genetic pool that allowed westslope cutthroat to adapt and survive in local streams for more than 12,000 years.

Pulls Cancelled Comedies
CBS
We may have seen the last of midseason CBS comedy series Friends With Better Lives and Bad Teacher. CBS has quietly pulled the shows off the schedule as it is making a push for a freshman comedy series that got renewed for next season, Mom. Repeats of Mom will move into Friends With Better Lives' Monday 8:30 PM slot, where it will air next fall. For extra sampling, reruns of Mom also will air behind the biggest comedy series on television, CBS' The Big Bang Theory, in the Thursday 8:30 PM slot for the next few weeks. Starting this week, fellow renewed freshman comedy The Millers, which will return to the Thursday 8:30 PM slot in the fall, will temporarily move to the 9:30 PM berth currently occupied by Bad Teacher, following Two And A Half Men. CBS has an available half-hour slot on Monday for the summer, with 2.5 Men reruns also airing at 9:30 PM there, following Mike & Molly. But the network seems to be going for a clean break from the just-finished season, opting not to continue with any of its cancelled comedies and focusing on the shows that are coming back. There are no plans at the moment for the remaining episodes of FWBL, which has aired 9 of its 13 produced episodes, or Bad Teacher, which has aired 5.
The yanking of FWBL comes after the comedy had done some respectable ratings business recently. With no support in a comedy repeat-filled CBS Monday lineup, the comedy drew a 1.4 among adults 18-49 last night in the fast nationals. It slipped 13% from last week, which is to be expected on a holiday, but finished tied for No.2 on the night with the season premiere of Fox's MasterChef and ABC's The Bachelorette, just 0.1 off first place. It built on its 2 Broke Girls rerun (1.0) lead-in by 40% and was the highest-rated program on CBS by a mile, with Mike & Molly repeat logging a 1.0 and Mom as the lowest-rated comedy with a 0.9 for an encore. In its final airing last Thursday, Bad Teacher pulled in a 1.1. It was the lowest-rated comedy on CBS that night, beaten by reruns of Big Bang Theory, The Millers and Two And A Half Men.

Hit Car?
Meteorite
This past Sunday at 2 AM, Joe Massa was driving to his home in Kettering, Ohio when something struck his car. He told WHIO that, "It was like a silent pop…then there was pressure in the car. I could feel pressure in my ears, like the air had changed in the car, in a split second." So, what hit Mr. Massa's car? As far as he's concerned - a meteorite.
Mr. Massa, a Cincinnati-based restaurant manager, points out that the dent in his Buick's bumper indicates that it was struck by something hitting it in a downward motion. Another point that may help validate his claims is, as WHIO points out, a "meteor shower that was expected over the weekend as the tail of a comet, discovered in 2004, entered the earth's atmosphere."
While the station is still working to verify Mr. Massa's story, Rich Wirdzek, a meteorologist for WHIO, pointed out how rare it is for something like to this to happen. He wrote, in part:
"Statistically, the chances of being struck by one are extremely small considering the size of the Earth versus the size of the object. This guy was in the right place at the right time (or wrong place, wrong time!)."
