M Is For Mashup
By DJ Useo
Friends came to visit last Sunday. Amazingly, they had NEVER heard mashups, let alone heard OF them. This gave me the fun of selecting which tracks they'd be exposed to first. Well, they were perplexed some, & also pleased to a high degree. To process this new sound experience, their left, & right side of their brains had to percieve together what was happening audio-wise. This is not always an easy task for newbies. In many case, the artists mixed were unknown & the comment was made, & repeated "is this a mashup, or a regular song?". Here's a fine new batch of recently released blends. It's likely you won't know the artists employed. Give them a try, & see if you can tell which type of track it is.
01 - DRA'man - "Trouble et Moi" ( Anouk vs Jacques Dutronc )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12956/anouk-vs-jacques-dutronc-trouble-et-moi )
02 - Martinn - "Arcade DGAF" ( Dua Lipa vs Duncan Laurence )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12942/arcade-dgaf-dua-lipa-vs-duncan-laurence )
03 - SMASH - "Honestly Sweet But I Like It Psycho" ( Ava Max vs Multiple Artists )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12939/honestly-sweet-but-i-like-it-psycho-ava-max-vs-multiple-artists )
04 - Star Man / YITT - star icon "Loaded City" ( Power Glove vs Starship ) star icon
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12931/-power-glove-vs-starship-loaded-city-star-man-mashup- )
05 - Grave Danger - "Broken One More Time" ( Daft Punk vs lovelytheband )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12930/quotbroken-one-more-timequot-daft-punk-vs-lovelytheband )
06 - DJ Useo - "Love Missile Bereft" ( Sigue Sigue Sputnik vs IERRP )
( sowndhaus.audio/track/12900/sigue-sigue-sputnik-vs-ierrp )
So, how did that go for you? Did you notice that they began very "normally', & progressed to a more bootleg sound?
Have fun giving this "test" to your friends. I wager you'll be surprised how few of your pals even know of mashups.

Anecdotes
Heroes
• On the beach of Daytona Beach, Florida, in March 2011 a woman snatched the purse of Angela Baldwin and took off running. Angela’s two children — 12-year-old Angel Baldwin and 10-year-old Carina Baldwin also took off running — after the purse-snatcher. Angel said, “I kept saying, ‘Give me my mom’s purse back,’ and she kept saying. ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about.’” Carina followed the woman into a woman’s restroom, and the woman tossed the purse away and then ran away again. Police arrested and charged a woman with grand theft charges soon after. The two children are heroes, but their mother says, “I’m very proud of them, but I did have a stern talk with them never to do this again … next time you call for help!” So what do Angel and Carina want to do when they grow up? They say that they want to go into law enforcement.
Husbands and Wives
• Patricia Morrison played bass in bands such as The Damned, and she noticed a lot of things that most people don’t notice. For example, she noticed that the lead singer of The Damned had “a good behind to look at. Being behind the singer at most of the gigs, you notice things like that.” By the way, she married the lead singer: Dave Vanian. (She says it was love at first sight, but the first sight was before she became the bass player in The Damned.) The person who married them — in Las Vegas — was an Elvis impersonator.
• Husband-and-wife comedy team Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara met because of an agent. Mr. Stiller was outside the agent’s office waiting to be interviewed for a job when he heard a woman scream and run out of the agent’s office. The woman, an attractive redhead (Ms. Meara, of course) told him that the agent had chased her around the room. Mr. Stiller says that he went into the office to confront the agent — and the agent chased him around the room. Neither got the job they “interviewed” for, but both got each other.
• Art Linkletter was a famous daytime TV show host in the mid-20th century. On one of his shows, a woman won a mink stole, and Mr. Linkletter put it around her shoulders and then told her, “Wait until your husband sees you in this. I bet he’ll say you’re beautiful.” The husband was then led onstage, and Mr. Linkletter saw that the man was blind. Fortunately, the husband said exactly the right thing, “You’re absolutely right, Mr. Linkletter. I can see that she is beautiful.”
• Mark Twain enjoying swearing, a habit his wife deplored. One day, Mr. Twain cut himself shaving, and he unleased a steady stream of swear words. His wife, hoping to cure him of his bad habit, in a calm voice repeated every swear word he had shouted. Mr. Twain was unrepentant, merely remarking, “You have the words, my dear, but you don’t know the tune.”
• Vadim Rindin, the husband of Soviet ballerina Galina Ulanova, had a good sense of humor. Before signing a contract written in English, he took off one pair of spectacles and put on another, saying, “These are German spectacles. I think I should wear my English ones for this.”
• Carole Lombard’s second husband was William Powell. On her honeymoon, she sent this telegram to her friends: “NOTHING NEW TO REPORT.”
Illnesses and Injuries
• Art Linkletter was a famous daytime TV show host in the mid-20th century. He once took part in a miracle. He and his wife, Lois, were in Tahiti following a visit to their ranch in Australia when they received a telegram that his wife’s mother, Peg, had suffered a stroke and was unconscious. Of course, they immediately came home, and Mr. Linkletter followed an impulse to hold his mother-in-law’s hand and tell her in a voice of authority, “Peg, I know you can hear me. Lois and I have flown all the way from Australia to tell you about our sheep. Now open your eyes and say hello.” Peg opened her eyes and said, “Hello, Art.” Then she closed her eyes again. This time, Mr. Linkletter said, “Come on, now keep those eyes open. We love you.” She opened her eyes, and this time they stayed open. Mr. Linkletter says, “It was the only miracle I ever witnessed. I was glad it was for my mother-in-law.”

Is 'thoughts & prayers' the new 'let them eat cake'?
Hired By MSNBC
Jen Psaki
Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki has officially landed at MSNBC, where she is expected to make appearances on the network’s cable and streaming programs as well as host a new original show.
The program, set to debut in the first quarter of 2023, will “bring together her unique perspective from behind the podium and her deep experience in the highest levels of government and presidential politics,” the network said in a statement Tuesday.
Psaki will also appear on NBC and during MSNBC’s primetime special election programming throughout the midterms and 2024 presidential election.
Psaki most recently served as White House spokesperson for the first 16 months of the Biden administration. She previously served as White House communications director under former President Barack Obama and as the spokeswoman for the Department of State.

Burn-Proof Edition Up For Auction
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
Margaret Atwood has imagined apocalyptic disaster, Dystopian government and an author faking her own death. But until recently she had spared herself the nightmare of trying to burn one of her own books.
With a flamethrower, no less. She failed, and that was the point.
On Monday night, timed for PEN America’s annual gala, Atwood and Penguin Random House announced that a one-off, unburnable edition of “The Handmaid’s Tale” would be auctioned through Sotheby’s New York. They launched the initiative with a brief video that shows Atwood attempting in vain to incinerate her classic novel about a totalitarian patriarchy, the Republic of Gilead. Proceeds will be donated to PEN, which advocates for free expression around the world.
The fireproof narrative is a joint project among PEN, Atwood, Penguin Random House and two companies based in Toronto, where Atwood is a longtime resident: the Rethink creative agency and The Gas Company Inc., a graphic arts and bookbinding specialty studio.

Raises Money For Ukraine
Richard Gere
Actor Richard Gere hosted a benefit concert for Ukraine at Carnegie Hall that raised $360,000 for Direct Relief, a humanitarian organization providing medical aid.
Soprano Angel Blue, mezzo-sopranos Denyce Graves and Isabel Leonard, pianist Evgeny Kissin, violinists Midori and Itzhak Perlman, Tony Award-winner Adrienne Warren, singer Michael Feinstein, jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, mandolinist Chris Thile and Broadway actress Jessica Vosk were among the performers Monday night during a program whose themes included prayer and dreams.
Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, spoke in a recorded video and Ukraine’s U.N. ambassador, Sergiy Kyslytsya, spoke in person.
The audience included Jamala, a Ukrainian singer whose “1944” won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York sang Ukraine’s national anthem and filled the aisles for the closing number, “Somewhere” from Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” Many of the performers joined in a rare moment when Kissin and Midori sang in performance.
Highlights included Warren’s soaring “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” from Mitch Leigh’s “The Man of La Mancha,” Warren and Vosk performing Carole Bayer Sager’s “Prayer,” Perlman and Kissin performing John Williams’ theme from “Schindler’s List,” and Kissin’s impassioned rendition of Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor.

Honors Activists, Artists and Dissidents
PEN America
From an imprisoned Ukranian journalist to a high school activist in Florida, PEN America paid tribute Monday night to democracy and free expression and warned about the dangers faced in the U.S. and abroad.
“Instead of being able focus on menial responsibilities such as school work, my generation has been forced to rapidly mobilize and fight for our future,” Florida teenager Jack Petocz, a prominent opponent of the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, said Monday. “If our collective voice couldn’t make a difference, then they wouldn’t be trying so hard to silence it.”
Marking its 100th year, the literary and human rights organization held its annual fundraising dinner gala, as some 650 authors, publishers, editors and others gathered at the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. Petocz was given the PEN/Benenson Courage Award, author Zadie Smith the literary service award and Audible.com founder Donald Katz the award for being a business visionary. Actor—comedian-commentator Faith Salie hosted.
Ukrainian journalist Vladyslav Yesypenko, currently serving a six-year sentence in a Russian labor camp for his reporting in Russian-occupied Crimea, was presented in absentia the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award, given to political prisoners. Yesypenko’s wife Kateryna, introduced by actor Michael Douglas, spoke on his behalf.

Hurls Justified Expletives
Ruben Gallego
Rep. Ruben Gallego hurled profanity at Sen. Ted Cruz after the Texas Republican worried that Democrats and the media would use the massacre of elementary students Tuesday to curb gun rights.
In a series of coarse tweets reflecting the raw outrage at the slaying of at least 14 children and a teacher in Uvalde, Texas, Gallego, D-Ariz., also alluded to an infamous 2021 trip to Cancun, Mexico, Cruz took as his state grappled with massive blackouts following a winter storm.
"F--- you @tedcruz you care about a fetus but you will let our children get slaughtered. Just get your ass to Cancun. You are useless," Gallego wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Twenty-one minutes later, Gallego doubled down on the message: "Just to be clear f--- you @tedcruz you f------ baby killer."
Gallego's anger, which included a similarly profane tweet at the National Rifle Association, overshadowed a more measured comment from his official account in which he said, "We have surrendered our communities and our children to an endless parade of tragedy. Enough with the thoughts and prayers: we must take action and confront gun violence."

Season Finale Pulled
‘FBI’
CBS has pulled the FBI season finale following the Texas school shooting that left at least 18 children and three adults dead.
The Dick Wolf-produced show’s season four finale was scheduled to air Tuesday, the same day that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed that a gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about 85 miles west of San Antonio.
FBI’s finale was set to include a storyline involving a student’s possible involvement in a deadly robbery. A rerun will air in its place, and it is unclear whether the episode will be seen in the future.

Dress Auction Put On Hold
‘Wizard of Oz’
The dramatic story of an iconic movie costume from “The Wizard of Oz” thought lost for decades went through another plot twist Monday, when a judge blocked its planned sale at auction.
One of the blue-and-white checked gingham dresses that Judy Garland wore in 1939 for her role as Dorothy was scheduled to be part of an auction of Hollywood memorabilia in Los Angeles on Tuesday, put up for sale by Catholic University of America. The dress was rediscovered at the school last year in a shoebox during preparations for a renovation.
Auctioneer Bonhams listed a presale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million for the dress before it was withdrawn.
But U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe in Manhattan granted a motion for a preliminary injunction after a hearing in a lawsuit filed by a relative of Father Gilbert Hartke, who worked at the university and was given the dress in 1973.

Prime Time Ratings
NBA Playoffs: Golden State at Dallas
Last week’s No. 1 program was the Golden State-Dallas conference finals matchup in which the Warriors extended their winning streak to three out of three. The first two games were among the top 10 programs, with playoff games overall claiming a quarter of the top 20, according to Nielsen figures released Tuesday.
Viewers fit in time for favorite series including CBS’ “FBI,” whose next-to-last episode for the season the most-watched drama. The network pulled this week’s season finale because its plot, about a cache of guns linked to a student, was deemed too close to Tuesday’s mass killings at a Texas elementary school.
ABC’s “World News Tonight” won the evening news ratings race with an average of 7.4 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightly News” averaged 6.1 million viewers and the “CBS Evening News” had 4.5 million.
