Regional Mashup Video Finals!
By DJ Useo
If you've been keeping up with the Mashup Video International playoffs, you'll be anxious to know the five finalists for the five final rounds. (five) I was eliminated 2 rounds ago, so I'm griped as anything to discuss the matter at all. Still, It's not about me all the time, isn't it? Is it? (five) Here's the five acclaimed tracks that did beat all the others. You're sure to enjoy these.
01-Go Home Productions surged into a big lead with 'Don't Look Odd In Space' (Oasis vs David Bowie)
[ www.youtube.com/watch?v=oilbf0cV0tk&list=UUTWt9LZBupQ6_Ss9rsoihJw&index=2 ] The current Bowie rage is fed along with the ever-loving Oasis fans require.
02-Voicedude made a big showing with 'Could This Be Madness' (Al Green vs Muse)
[ vimeo.com/65856198 ] In this vid one generations' star meets another generations' star band to provide killer satisfaction. This gem features a video made by the tender little fingers of Bobby G. You feel the benefit.
03-Hahnstudio placed well with his 'Little Bad Girl Livin' On A Prayer' (Bon Jovi vs David Guetta)
[ vimeo.com/65331807 ] The track is part of his fine new ep '
ROCK MEETS DANCEFLOOR', a collection I heartedly endorse.
[ mixes-for-the-masses.blogspot.de/2013/04/coming-soon.html ] As good as the audio mix is, it plays with even more appeal as a video.
04-G3rst has a spanking new entry called 'We Are Never Getting Chiptuned' (Taylor Swift vs RAMS)
[ www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQQtWpSPwNQ ] This mix has the chops it takes along with that fresh new 8-bit sound. The video is a static masterpiece which offers visuals, but never distracts from the music.
05-DJ Schmolli is off and running with his latest gem, 'Molotov For A Leather Endboss' (Marteria vs Seeed vs Offspring vs Andrew Ridgeley vs Skepta vs Judas Priest)
[ www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTdeZqyOjjg ] The bookies are giving good odds on this being the winner, but I say they're favoring it because Schmolli has such a great track record. You'll love this one.
It's an exciting time for fans of mashups and the mixers themselves. Don't wear your eyes out all at once now.
Pace yourselves! I'll be back next week.

Mashup Tip
Luddy at the Ableton forum reminds us to "beware that some plug-ins behave badly when they get too-hot inputs (over 0dBFS). It just depends on the plug-in, but you can't go wrong by keeping your levels safely below 0dBFS in between plug-ins."
Latest Useo Thing
I slaved recently along with the skilled DJ Livercool to create the ultimate Pink Floyd long mix. Man, did we ever succeed! Whether you love the band or are just discovering them, this is Pink Floyd bootleg mixing of the highest order.

They beat down acorns for pigs, trap hares, learn the minutiae of caring for hens, building cowhouses and stalking, shooting and skinning stags.

Mark Twain Prize for American Humor
Carol Burnett
Actress and comedienne Carol Burnett will be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the top award for American comics, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said on Tuesday.
Burnett, 80, whose Emmy-winning sketch comedy variety program "The Carol Burnett Show" was a mainstay on U.S. television from 1967 to 1978, will receive the award during a ceremony at Washington's Kennedy Center in October.
Burnett received her big break in the Broadway musical "Once Upon a Mattress" in 1959, which earned her a Tony Award nomination.
She won her first Emmy Award in 1962 for her work on "The Garry Moore Show" sketch comedy TV program, but cemented her comedic reputation by parodying the film "Gone with the Wind" and the TV soap opera "As the World Turns" on her own show.

Disabled Actors Protest Casting
NBC's 'Ironside'
When the '60s procedural "Ironside" is revived on NBC this fall, the setting will move from San Francisco to New York and the lead character will be African-American. But one thing hasn't changed: The actor playing Ironside can still walk from his wheelchair when the director yells cut.
The colorblind casting is ironic to some disabled actors - who say having a walking actor play a paraplegic is as offensive as blackface.
"This would be like being in the '50s and having a white guy do blackface, at this point," said "Sons of Anarchy" star Kurt Yaeger, an actor and pro BMX rider who lost his left leg after a motorcycle accident. "You need to start having disabled people playing disabled characters. Period."
NBC declined to comment to TheWrap on the "Ironside" casting, and on whether any disabled actors auditioned for the role, which went to Blair Underwood. But five disabled actors who spoke to TheWrap said film and television should at least give them a chance to play characters whose struggles they truly understand.

Items Head To NYC Museum
Jim Henson
The Muppets may have taken Manhattan, but they're getting a spiffy new home in Queens.
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie of "Sesame Street" fame, the stars of "Fraggle Rock" and other puppets, costumes and items from throughout Muppets creator Jim Henson's career have been donated to the Museum of the Moving Image, which is building a new gallery to house them, the institution announced Tuesday.
Encompassing almost 400 items ranging from original puppets to behind-the-scenes footage, the gift is a boon for the 25-year-old museum, which saw attendance skyrocket during a temporary exhibit in 2011 and 2012 of Henson's work. And it fulfills a cherished goal for Henson's widow and collaborator, Jane Henson, who died last month at 78.
The exhibit is to open next year at the museum in the Long Island City neighborhood, across the East River from midtown Manhattan. The city is chipping in $2.75 million toward the $5 million cost for a project it sees as furthering its goal of persuading more tourists to venture beyond Manhattan.

Hospital News
George Michael
British singer George Michael remains in hospital under observation for head injuries, five days after a car accident, his publicist said on Tuesday.
"I can confirm that George remains in hospital but purely as a standard precaution for observation because he suffered some bumps and cuts to his head. But he's making good progress, he's fine and he's really looking forward to getting home," the spokeswoman said.
British media have reported that the 49-year-old former Wham! front man fell out of a car he was travelling in on the M1 motorway just outside London during rush hour - the latest of a string of recent accidents and health scares.
The tabloid Sun newspaper interviewed a woman who said she had skidded to a halt after the singer fell out of the vehicle in front of her, and that she had used her car to shield him from other vehicles.

Cutting Workforce
E$PN
E$PN is cutting its workforce, the latest Di$ney division to reduce staff.
"We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth bottom line while smartly managing costs lining our pockets," the sports media giant said bragged in a short-sighted statement Tuesday. "While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive money."
In April, Di$ney laid off about 150 people at LucasArts, the video-game making division of Lucasfilm, four months after acquiring the company behind "Star Wars" for $4.06 billion. Di$ney also laid off about the same number at the movie studio in April to cope with the decline in DVD sales as consumer habits shift to digital forms of home entertainment.
Still, Di$ney has been on a roll financially, beating or matching earnings per share estimates for the last eight quarters. After it reported a 32 percent gain in net income for its fiscal second-quarter earnings two weeks ago, more than a dozen Wall Street analysts raised their price targets on Di$ney stock to an average of nearly $72. Shares of The Walt Di$ney Co. were down 2 cents at $66.10 in midday trading Tuesday.

Monkey Becomes German Property
Bieber
Justin Bieber's pet monkey is no longer his.
The capuchin monkey named Mally was seized by German customs on March 28 when the 19-year-old Canadian pop star failed to produce the required vaccination and import papers after landing in Munich for a European tour.
Authorities issued an order Tuesday transferring ownership of the animal to Germany after Bieber missed a deadline to send the documents, customs spokesman Thomas Meister said.
Germany's Federal Agency for Nature Conservation said the monkey would be sent to a German zoo but officials declined to say exactly where to avoid security problems.

Guilty Plea In Vandalism Case
Picasso
A man accused of vandalizing a 1929 Pablo Picasso painting in a Houston museum - an act that was caught on cellphone video - agreed Tuesday to a two-year prison term as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
Uriel Landeros had faced felony graffiti and criminal mischief charges accusing him of spray-painting "Woman in a Red Armchair" at the Menil Collection.
Emily Detoto, Landeros' attorney, said that after negotiating with prosecutors during a court hearing, her client agreed to plead guilty to the graffiti charge in exchange for a minimal prison sentence. The other charge was dropped. Landeros had faced up to 10 years in prison.
Detoto said Landeros, 22, wanted the criminal mischief charge dismissed because he believed "what he did to the painting was not criminal mischief, it was an artistic statement, an expression, much like graffiti art is."
The painting was damaged June 13 and a bystander captured the act in a 24-second video that was posted on YouTube. The vandal left behind an image of a bullfighter, a bull and the word "conquista," the Spanish word for conquest.

Abortion Demons!
Francis
Pope Francis' fascination with the devil took on remarkable new twists Tuesday, with a well-known exorcist insisting Francis helped "liberate" a Mexican man possessed by four different demons despite the Vatican's insistence that no such papal exorcism took place.
The case concerns a 43-year-old husband and father who traveled to Rome from Mexico to attend Francis' Mass on Sunday in St. Peter's Square. At the end of the Mass, Francis blessed several wheelchair-bound faithful as he always does, including a man possessed by the devil, according to the priest who brought him, the Rev. Juan Rivas.
Francis laid his hands on the man's head and recited a prayer. The man heaved deeply a half-dozen times, shook, then slumped in his wheelchair.
The images, broadcast worldwide, prompted the television station of the Italian bishops' conference to declare that according to several exorcists, there was "no doubt" that Francis either performed an exorcism or a simpler prayer to free the man from the devil.
The Rev. Gabriele Amorth, a leading exorcist for the diocese of Rome, said he performed a lengthy exorcism of his own on the man Tuesday morning and ascertained he was possessed by four separate demons. The case was related to the legalization of abortion in Mexico City, he said.
