From my perspective, the winter stayed far too long & I have no patience for Spring, so let the Summer begin!
In mashupland Summer is marked by the new SUMMER BOOTY bootleg music complilation. This year again the release features over twenty international home producers doing the thing they do best. Starting with the musical premise of 'a bootleg, remix,or mashup' that evokes the feeling of the endless summer, perhaps a hot day's drive in a convertible while the stereo blasts, they more than delivered. From the opening track submitted by UK's popular mixer The Geez & the immediate release of a video to accompany, it was clear the Summer mood prevailed.

Quickly, more tracks arrived from various well-known DJ's & soon tracks like Liam Nicklen's "Sneaky Exhale" (Liam Nicklen vs Sneaky Sound System) & Pomatic's "Summertime Blown" (Beyonce vs. Snoop Dogg vs. Diddy & Notorious B.I.G.) were filling out the upcoming release. Fast-rising mashup star, Virtual DJ, did his magic on Shakira & the Thievery Corporation & before you could say 'bastard pop,' the instant classic "Lebanese Thieves Don't Lie" was ready to burn itself into your memory.
More videos came quickly in the form of Alpha1999's "Faith Be Dub To Me (George Michael vs Beats International) [youtube.com/watch?v=FjFzNybyJ3I&feature=user] an amazingly appealing track will get caught between your ears, & not easily dislodged, as if you'd want that. Pomatic's track yielded a
super video hand-made by the ever-talented Guttorm [youtube.com/watch?v=BoFROkrPvYs&feature=user].
All set a tone that inspired, so soon the entire collection was at hand. An assortment of such Summer potency that you will all want to re-play till snow returns.
In the finest SUMMER BOOTY tradition, there's a seamless one-hour mix containing both discs. This years' long mix features the return of DJ Petrushka & her strong hand at joining wildly disparate musical styles. It's a needed talent when dealing with a collection like SUMMER BOOTY 2008. In her own words she says "I love music very much, and these tracks had me loving them. When I play them I feel like I've got my Ray Bans on, I've got my foot to the floorboard, & the wind & the music is whooshing past my head".
Don't miss tracks by the above-mentioned, DJ Spider, Simon Iddol, Miss Frenchie, Cheekyboy, Voicedude, Supakon (catches breath), DJ M.i.F, DJ Fac, MP3J, Aekon, DJ Morgoth, DJ Magnet, DJTopcat, Corrupt DJ's, Dottysmash, Mad Martigan, & me, DJ Useo. A line-up so good I'll say it 2wice. lol
Thanks to Alpha1999 for his amazing art direction.
Thanks to DJ Petrushka for helping with day to day planning.
Thanks to all the bootleggers who gave of their time & energy.
& thanks to the label stars who make it all possible with the world's great pop music.

Jim Hightower: JPMORGAN'S "CHEATS & TRICKS" (jimhightower.com)
To understand today's current mortgage crisis and spreading recession, look to an internal memo from Wall Street banking giant, JPMorgan Chase. For something that ended up so badly, the memo begins with a fun title: "Zippy Cheats & Tricks."
Stevenson Swanson: Phil Donahue and 'Body of War' battle to get into theaters (Chicago Tribune)
That emphatic, empathetic baritone voice, still familiar after all these years, echoes off the walls of the penthouse apartment. "`A gun smokes only after it's fired,'" Phil Donahue says, his voice rising in volume until it's booming with anger. "`The longer we wait, the more dangerous he becomes.' And, `Inaction is worse than action.'"
Michael Phillips: Harrison Ford returns to the real 'let's-pretend' job that propelled his career (Chicago Tribune)
When Harrison Ford attended Wisconsin's Ripon College, he drifted over to the theater department from the philosophy department and stuffed a pillow under his shirt to play Mr. Antrobus in Thornton Wilder's "The Skin of Our Teeth," a wartime fantasy about struggle and survival. He also sang and danced a bit in "The Fantasticks" and played Mack the Knife in "The Threepenny Opera." His summer stock credits included "The Night of the Iguana" and "Damn Yankees."
An actress is born (film.guardian.co.uk)
Pirates of the Caribbean made her a star, but Keira Knightley knows that securing fame is not the same thing as establishing her acting credentials. As the 23-year-old takes the lead in two new films, this candid interview with Jason Solomons finds her self-mocking, hungry to learn and determined to master her craft.
20 QUESTIONS: Miranda Lambert (popmatters.com)
Q: The best thing you ever bought, stole, or borrowed?
A: "The Last Waltz"-I stole/borrowed from my tour manager and then have bought about four other copies since because I wear it out. We watch it almost every night before going on stage, it completely energizes you and inspires you to give it your all on stage.
David Bruce: Wise Up! Activism (athensnews.com)
Wendy Roby recommends that people engage in random acts of feminism. For example, if "lads' mags," which feature photos of nude women, offend you, you can simply go to the stores that sells this kind of "reading" material and put copies of "Good Housekeeping" in front of these magazines to obscure their covers. A person who goes by the name Charlie Grrl recommends "subvertising" the lads' mags by adding Post-it notes to the covers. For example, the Post-it notes could say, "Despite my come-hither expression, I wouldn't shag a 'Nuts' reader for a million pounds" or "I am somebody's sister."

PS I also read the first book of the two-part history of Elvis, "Last Train From Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley," by Peter Guralnickon (circa 1995) and it is one of the best books about music I have ever read.

Despite a court-ordered ban on the teaching of creationism in US schools, about one in eight high-school biology teachers still teach it as valid science, a survey reveals. And, although almost all teachers also taught evolution, those with less training in science - and especially evolutionary biology - tend to devote less class time to Darwinian principles.
US courts have repeatedly decreed that creationism and intelligent design are religion, not science, and have no place in school science classrooms. But no matter what courts and school boards decree, it is up to teachers to put the curriculum into practice.
"Ultimately, they are the ones who carry it out," says Michael Berkman, a political scientist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.
But what teachers actually teach about evolution and creationism in their classrooms is a bit of a grey area, so Berkman and his colleagues decided to conduct the first-ever national survey on the subject.

A professor at Ursinus College in suburban Philadelphia thinks "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is worthy of serious academic study.
The TV show went off the air in 2003, but Professor Lynne Edwards is still leading scholarship about it. She edits Watcher Junior, an online journal of undergraduate research into "Buffy" and its spinoff series, "Angel." And she's the editor of a book, "Buffy Goes Dark," which is to be published in September.
Edwards is far from the only academic with an interest in the show. The third academic conference dedicated to "Buffy" is planned in June at Henderson State University in Arkansas.
Harrison Ford pulled a Steve Carell for a public service announcement: He gets his chest waxed.
The 65-year-old star winces in apparent pain as a strip of hair is yanked from between his pecs for a PSA for Conservation International to raise awareness about the effect of deforestation on global warming.
The actor, who doesn't typically appear in such TV spots, sits on the board of directors of the Washington-based environmental organization.
The classic scene from 2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" - in which Carell screams out "Kelly Clarkson!" during his chest hair removal - was intentionally hilarious. Ford's message, however, is serious: "Every bit of rain forest that gets ripped out over there, really hurts us over here."
Jessica Alba, who is pregnant with her first child, married long time boyfriend Cash Warren on Monday, her publicist said.
Alba, 27, best-known for her roles in the TV drama "Dark Angel" and the movie "Fantastic Four," announced she was engaged last year. The baby is expected in the early summer of 2008.
Alba met Warren on the set of "Fantastic Four" in 2004 where he was a director's assistant. Warren has since moved into producing.

Paramount Pictures said Tuesday that developers will open a theme park and resort complex in South Korea in 2011 based on "Mission: Impossible," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and other movies by the studio.
Paramount Movie Park Korea will have more than 30 attractions, said Michael Corcoran, president of Paramount Pictures Corp.'s consumer products and recreation group, who predicted it will draw more than 5 million visitors during its first year of operation.
Plans for theme parks based on the films of Universal Studios and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in South Korea have also been announced with an eye to luring both South Koreans and international visitors, especially from nearby China.
Aspects of Korean entertainment and pop culture, popular in much of Asia, will be incorporated into attractions at the park to be built in Incheon, a port city west of Seoul, officials said.
NBC, CBS, and Fox charged on Tuesday that Redlasso, a closely-held website operator, has violated copyright laws by streaming video clips of their news, sports and television shows without permission.
In a letter, lawyers for CBS Corp, General Electric's NBC, News Corp's Fox and Allbritton Communications Co, a TV station owner, said Redlasso has broken state and federal laws while causing the companies "serious and irreparable harm."
They demanded Redlasso stop reproducing, distributing or displaying the broadcasts.
Redlasso is a site that enables users -- often bloggers -- to create clips from TV broadcasts and then share them. The service is free, according to its website, which says it splits advertising revenue with producers and owners of the content.

A photographer convicted of assaulting Heather Mills won an appeal Tuesday because Mills didn't attend a court hearing.
Jay Kaycappa had been sentenced to 140 hours of community service for allegedly grabbing Mills by her shoulder and taking her photograph in 2006.
Kaycappa had been convicted of assaulting Mills and her friend Mark Payne after encountering them in a pedestrian tunnel. Mills, Payne and two other men were cycling to the south coast city of Brighton at the time.
A fire broke out Tuesday at the Berlin Philharmonic's home, sending thick smoke pouring from the crest of the iconic downtown building as firefighters and musicians rushed to save instruments.
The blaze broke out beneath the roof of the building directly over the main concert hall, which seats 2,500 and is famed for its extraordinary acoustics. The cause was not immediately clear, said Marco Trenn, a spokesman for Berlin firefighters. No flames were visible from the outside.
He said firefighters faced the job of cutting holes in the tent-shaped roof, which is 160 feet (50 meters) above the ground, to get at the fire. "To fight this is not simple," he said.
Musicians were allowed into the building to remove instruments they had left in their lockers overnight following Monday's rehearsal, assisted by firefighters.

Hillary Clinton is smart and forceful, John McCain is proud but has a volatile temper, and Barack Obama is a diplomat who deals well with different people and situations.
At least, that's what graphologists say their handwriting reveals about them.
Graphology -- the study of how we loop our Ls and cross our Ts -- is not taken as seriously in the United States as in Europe.
But every four years, when a US presidential election rolls around, practitioners of the arcane science are much sought after as Americans try everything to analyze contenders for the White House.
Lawmakers didn't get around to voting until Tuesday on a resolution supporting May 13, 2008 - last Tuesday - as the day honoring the late singer and Academy-Award-winning actor. Making up for lost time, the House voted 402-3 to do just that.
Rep. Jose Serrano, D-N.Y., sponsor of the non-binding resolution and ostensibly the House's biggest Sinatra fan, told the House how he was introduced to the English language by listening to Sinatra records after his father returned from World War II.
Serrano said that "nothing more than scheduling" was responsible for the late vote.
"May 13 came up on us a little sooner than expected," the congressman said.
The creator of the popular religious children's television show "Davey and Goliath" has died. A memorial service will be held May 31 at St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas for Richard Towne "Dick" Sutcliffe. He died May 11 in Dallas from complications of a stroke. He was 90.
Sutcliffe created "Davey and Goliath," a Christian-themed children's show about a boy and his talking dog that used stop-action animation.
Along with Gumby creators Art Clokey and Ruth Clokey Goodell, Sutcliffe created the Sunday-morning series to spread a religious message without losing younger viewers with overly complicated concepts, his daughter, J.T. Sutcliffe, told The Dallas Morning News.
Sutcliffe is survived by his wife, Judy Sutcliffe; daughter, J.T. Sutcliffe; son, Michael Sutcliffe; brother, Paul Sutcliffe and three grandchildren.
In this photo released by the Florida Keys News Bureau, a tiny solid gold combination toothpick and earwax scoop is displayed inside a clam shell Monday, May 19, 2008, in Key West, Fla. A Blue Water Ventures salvage diver recovered the artifact Sunday, May 18, about 40 miles west of Key West during a search for remains of the Spanish galleon Santa Margarita that shipwrecked in a 1622 hurricane. According to archaeologists, the 3-inch-long grooming tool is more than 385 years old and was probably worn on a gold chain. Estimated value could exceed $100,000.
