Paul Krugman: Nattering Nabobs of NAFTA (NY Times Blog)
This discussion with David Rennie of The Economist on Trump is pretty scary. To paraphrase an old Brad DeLong line, Trump is more ignorant and impulsive than you can imagine, even taking into account that he's more ignorant and impulsive than you can imagine. How close we came to leaving NAFTA: …
Josh Marshall: How To Understand James Comey (TPM)
It was reported on Friday that James Comey has declined to testify before the Senate unless he can do so in open session (and presumably only in open session). The motivation seems pretty clear: Comey wants his version of events aired in public and not kept under wraps or (the bigger issue, I think) subjected to the interpretations of senators who discuss the testimony with the press. But this is a good moment to discuss a broader issue about Comey, which I think this illustrates.
Iman Lababedi: American Songbook Presents Rhiannon Giddens At Alice Tully Hall, Saturday, May 13th, 2017, Reviewed (Rock NYC)
"On Sunday, 15th September, 1963, a white man was seen getting out of a white and turquoise Chevrolet car and placing a box under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Soon afterwards, at 10.22 a.m., the bomb exploded killing Denise McNair (11), Addie Mae Collins (14), Carole Robertson (14) and Cynthia Wesley (14). The four girls had been attending Sunday school classes at the church."
Jürgen Horn and Mike Powell: THE RICE PAPER MAKERS OF THUN HUNG (For 91 Days)
If you've ever wanted to feel like a celebrity without the hassle of "getting famous", then climb on a local Vietnamese bus and visit a far-flung village like Thu?n H?ng. Within minutes of boarding, we had shaken the hand of every passenger, and taken selfies with half of them. And by displaying passable Vietnamese while paying the fare, we nearly sent the bus into a state of hysteria.
Will Shortz: Bill Clinton Didn't Want His New York Times Crossword to Be Boring (NY Times)
[The] New York Times crossword - for Friday, May 12 - is a collaboration between former President Bill Clinton and the Arkansas district court judge Victor Fleming of Little Rock. Judge Fleming is a regular Times puzzle contributor. Mr. Clinton has written clues for a puzzle in the past (in 2007), but this puzzle marks the first time in recent memory that a U.S. president is known to have been involved in constructing a New York Times crossword puzzle from its start.
In the Northern Hemisphere, what day has the most daylight hours?
Summer Solstice (2017 - 21 June edt/ 20 June pdt)
Source
June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and the second month to have the length of 30 days. June contains the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the day with the most daylight hours, and the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the day with the fewest daylight hours (excluding polar regions in both cases). June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the traditional astronomical summer is 21 June (meteorological summer begins on 1 June). In the Southern hemisphere, meteorological winter begins on 1 June.

the actual DAY in June depends on the leap-year cycle...

He knows, on that day, the sunlight will begin to wane. The summer
solstice, when the earth's axial tilt is most sunward, putting the sun
directly overhead above the Tropic of Capricorn, occurs between June 20
and 22. It is "celebrated" in the US on 21 June.

The Summer Solstice-this year June 20.
Decades ago, when BC was still funny, one of the cavemen proposed the question: "If the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, what's the summer solstice?"
The reply: "The tallest day of the year?"
Gotta love English!

The summer solstice, June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, has the most

This is a trick question, I think. (Like asking if Trump is a traitor, or
just an idiot.)
It must be the day before the Summer Solstice, because the days get longer
until then, shorter after. But the solstice doesn't fall the same every
year. This year, it falls on June 21, at just minutes past midnight Eastern
Daylight Savings Time. So June 20 would be the longest day. But if the
solstice fell at, say 11:15 pm June 21, then June 21 would be the longest
day, with the days getting shorter on the 22nd. I guess....
Billy in Cypress replied:
The longest day, in terms of daylight in the northern hemisphere, is called the Summer Solstice and usually occurs on or near June 21 each year. However, Since January 20, 2017, everyday seems much longer, but darker, than ever before. When will the crooked, warped Ghouls in the U.S. Congress wake up and impeach the insane CpPDJT-ID.
Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
At all latitudes in the northern hemisphere, the most hours of daylight fall on a solstice (June 21 this year).
Deborah answered:
That would be the summer solstice, June 20-22, depending on the year and time zone.
Santa Barbara has a really fun Solstice Celebration. I haven't been since the late '90s, though. Maybe it's time to go back.

David Letterman will receive the 2017 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the annual award handed out annually by the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in a nationally televised ceremony.
Letterman joins a list of Twain Prize recipients that also includes Richard Pryor, Tina Fey, Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres and, in recent years, Eddie Murphy and Billy Murray. Letterman wins the prize for his 30 years on late-night TV, during which he developed his characteristic deadpan humor as well as signature segments like nightly Top 10 lists and Stupid Human Tricks. The final episode of "Late Show With David Letterman" aired in May 2015.
The Mark Twain Prize is one of the two highest profile awards handed out by the Kennedy Center each year, along with the Kennedy Center Honors, which go to luminaries across all disciplines of the arts. The Twain ceremony in October will be part of a fall 2017 comedy slate at the Kennedy Center that will also include shows headlined by Whoopi Goldberg and Trevor Noah, as well as a couple of stints for Chicago troupe Second City.
The 20th Annual Mark Twain Prize will be handed out Oct. 22 in what is likely to be a starry gala ceremony at the Kennedy Center.

Late night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, the Academy said Tuesday, as the glitzy annual show moves on from the biggest mix-up in its history.
The 49-year-old comedian will be reunited with producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd for the 90th Academy Awards, which will take place on March 4, 2018.
This year's telecast ended in chaos after the wrong movie was announced as best picture, but neither Kimmel nor the producers were at fault for the fiasco.
"If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show," joked Kimmel, describing the February event in a statement as the "highlight of my career."

They're all subjects of punchlines Conan O'Brien is accused of ripping off - and that's no joke.
O'Brien lost an effort to toss out a federal copyright infringement lawsuit in San Diego last week, potentially setting up a novel trial over comic creativity and the value of laughter.
Robert Alexander Kaseberg said he posted several jokes online that the late-night comedian repeated almost verbatim later that day or the next on his "Conan" show on TBS.
"The laughter stopped in late 2014 and early 2015, at least for a spell, when (Kaseberg) began to notice similarities between his posts and several of the jokes used in the late-night television show Conan's monologues," U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino said in a ruling that allows the lawsuit to proceed.

The planned revival of classic sitcom "Roseanne" is moving forward at ABC, network president Channing Dungey said Tuesday.
"We're rebooting 'Roseanne,'"Dungey said on a conference call with reporters, adding it is being eyed for a midseason debut. ABC had been competing with Netflix for the new installment of the show.
The eight-episode reboot will feature the original cast - Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky). Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role. Johnny Galecki, who played David, currently stars on the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."
Tom Werner and Bruce Helford will return as executive producers, with Barr and Gilbert also executive producing. The original series ran for nine seasons on ABC and was widely praised for its portrayal of working class Americans. The series followed the Conner family as they tried to scrape out a living in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. The series also starred Laurie Metcalf-who won multiple Emmys for her portrayal of Roseanne's sister, Jackie-as well as "Big Bang Theory" star Johnny Galecki and Estelle Parsons.
A majority of polled voters wish Barack Obama was still president instead of Donald Trump (R-Crooked), a new national poll shows.
The Trump White House has had a chaotic couple of weeks. Last week, Mr Trump abruptly dismissed FBI Director James Comey, and then contradicted his press team and Vice President Mike Pence when explaining the reasoning behind the firing.
According to Public Policy Polling, 55 per cent of 692 registered voters surveyed between 12 and 14 May said they wish Mr Obama was still in office.
Only 38 per cent of surveyed voters said they considered Mr Trump to be honest, while 51 per cent characterised him as a liar.
Mr Trump appeared to contradict the White House again on Tuesday, tweeting that he had the "absolute right" to make disclosures to Russia, after his national security advisor HR McMaster told reporters on Monday that a Washington Post story reporting that the president revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador was false.

Disney chief Bob Iger said on Monday hackers claiming to have access to one of the company's unreleased movies were demanding a "huge" ransom, according to US media reports.
He did not reveal which film had been stolen but said the company would not be giving in to the blackmail attempt, according to The Hollywood Reporter, quoting Iger from a meeting in New York with employees of the Disney-owned ABC television network.
The weekly reported on its website -- citing multiple unnamed sources -- that Disney is working with federal agents and monitoring for leaks online.
Movie website Deadline identified "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," which opens on May 26, as the target, without revealing its sources, while some film writers speculated on Twitter that Pixar's "Cars 3," due for release next month, might have been hit.
The cyber-thieves demanded to be paid in online currency Bitcoin and are threatening to release five minutes of the movie, followed by 20-minute segments until the ransom is delivered.
Pvt. Chelsea Manning, the soldier convicted in 2013 of illegally disclosing classified government information, will remain on active duty in a special status after her scheduled release from prison Wednesday, the Army said Tuesday.
An Army spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson, said Manning will be on "excess leave" while her court-martial conviction is under appellate review. In that status she will be unpaid but will be legally entitled to military medical care.
A former intelligence analyst in Iraq, Manning is being released in accordance with former President Barack Obama's decision to grant her clemency in his final days in office. She was known as Bradley Manning before transitioning in prison.
She served nearly seven years of her 35-year sentence at the military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Michael Moore has been secretly making a Donald Trump (R-Grifter) documentary that he has dubbed "Fahrenheit 11/9," titling it after the day Trump became president-elect.
Producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein announced Tuesday they have secured worldwide rights to the film. Moore has been working on the film for months and he promises it will be explosive. Moore says Trump's ability to escape controversy "ends with this movie."
The film's title also refers to Moore's 2004 George W. Bush documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11." Before becoming a box-office smash, that film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Weinsteins will also shop Moore's latest in Cannes. They are vowing it will "present a story line unlike any that is currently being told."
Life comes at you fast, and it seems everyone has learned that the hard way since November 2016, including Dave Chappelle.
Following the presidential election that put Donald Trump in the White House, Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live with a politically-loaded monologue that goaded the election results. But according to a speech the comedian gave this week at the Robin Hood gala, there's one sentence Chappelle uttered back then that he realizes he'd like to take back.
"I'm wishing Donald Trump luck," Chappelle had said on SNL. "And I'm going to give him a chance. And we the historically disenfranchised demand that he gives us one too."
On Monday night, the comedian sang a very different tune.
"I was the first guy on TV to say 'Give Trump a chance,'" Chappelle reportedly said, according to tweets from attendees. "I fucked up. Sorry."
