BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing

We have opened up the radio show archives which are now free. Listen to
all you want.

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate
button on bartcop.com
But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

'Net Neutrality'
FCC
U.S. efforts to set new Internet traffic rules face a lengthy tug of war between big broadband providers and Republicans on one side and some tech companies and consumer advocates on the other as regulators prepare to propose the rules formally on Thursday.
U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler (R-Comcast) has expanded the issues and questions raised in his "open Internet" proposal to sway his two Democratic colleagues on the five-member panel, though some consumer advocates remain unhappy.
Public interest groups including Free Press plan to deliver a petition with more than 1 million signatures to the FCC and stage a protest against Wheeler's proposal that may allow Internet providers to charge some content companies for faster and more reliable delivery.
Comcast is the only Internet provider that has to abide by the older version of net neutrality rules until 2018, because of a condition placed on its acquisition of NBC Universal.

Concerts Will Be Offered As Private Events
Colorado Symphony
The Colorado Symphony said on Tuesday it will offer its planned bring-your-own marijuana concert series in Denver as private, invitation-only events so as not to run afoul of laws barring the public use of pot.
The symphony said this month it was organizing three pot-themed concerts this summer at a Denver art gallery under the banner "Classically Cannabis: The High Note Series."
The series was to be sponsored by businesses from Colorado's legal marijuana industry and concert-goers would be invited to consume marijuana at an outdoor patio.
Last week, Denver's director of excise and licenses, Stacie Loucks, sent a letter to symphony executives saying the city would use "any and all options" to halt the event.

"The Right To Be Forgotten"
Google
Europe's highest court Tuesday gave people the means to scrub their reputations online, issuing a landmark ruling that experts say could force Google and other search engines to delete references to old debts, long-ago arrests and other unflattering episodes.
Embracing what has come to be called "the right to be forgotten," the Court of Justice of the European Union said people should have some say over what information comes up when someone Googles them.
The decision was celebrated by some as a victory for privacy rights in an age when just about everything - good or bad - leaves a permanent electronic trace. Others warned it could interfere with the celebrated free flow of information online and lead to censorship.
In its ruling, which cannot be appealed, the EU court said search engines must listen and sometimes comply when people ask for the removal of links to newspaper articles or other sites containing outdated or otherwise objectionable information about themselves. The court provided little guidance on exactly how to make such judgments.

Found Off South Carolina Coast
The Planter
U.S. marine archaeologists said on Tuesday they believe they have located a sunken Civil War-era ship that a group of African-American slaves in Charleston commandeered to sail to freedom 152 years ago.
The remains of the storied sidewheel steamship Planter are likely buried off Cape Romain on the South Carolina coast, where the vessel later sank in 1876, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Magnetometer surveys found a large amount of iron signaling a sunken ship about a half mile offshore and buried under 10 to 15 feet of sand and water.
Tuesday marked the anniversary of its famous voyage on May 13, 1862.
On that day, Robert Smalls, a slave who worked as a deckhand on the Planter during the Civil War, disguised himself as the ship's captain. With his wife, children and other African-American slave families onboard, Smalls sailed the ship past Confederate sentries in Charleston Harbor and out to the Union blockade at sea.

Drops 'Midnight Rider' Lawsuit
Gregg Allman
Gregg Allman dropped his lawsuit against the producers of "Midnight Rider" on Tuesday.
Presiding Judge John Morse's office at the Superior Court of Chatham County told TheWrap that the case was dismissed this morning. An order has not yet been officially written.
A motion to quash and a motion hearing were scheduled for Monday, according to court filings.
The case - Gregory Allman vs. Unclaimed Freight Productions Inc. and Film Allman LLC - was filed as an attempt to stop production on the film after the Feb. 20 death of crewmember Sarah Jones.

ISP Uses Your Cable Modem To Offer Hotspots
Free WiFi
Several Internet Service Providers in the United States use subscribers' cable modems to broadcast free WiFi hotspots to other customers in the area. While notes about this practice are always buried somewhere in terms and conditions or other notices, subscribers are often unaware of this practice. And as might be expected, they're often taken aback when they learn for the first time that their Internet connections are being used to provide strangers with free WiFi.
Earlier this year, Comcast subscribers in Minnesota were surprised to learn that their modems were broadcasting free WiFi to anyone and everyone nearby who might be a Comcast customer. While ISPs claim these free WiFi networks are secure and completely separate from consumers' home Internet service, the continued threat from hackers who find new ways to steal our data is a concern that might still weighs heavy.
Now, customers are being reminded once again that Cablevision will also use its customers' home Internet modems to broadcast free WiFi hotspots.
As reported by LightReading, Cablevision confirmed during its recent earnings call that it is upgrading its Optimum Online modems in order to add free WiFi hotspot functionality. Once the upgrades are complete, Cablevision says it will offer more than 1 million WiFi hotspots across the country.
It should be noted that Optimum Online subscribers will have the ability to disable the free public hotspot feature on their modems.

White House
The White House on Tuesday brushed aside questions about whether the involvement of Vice President Joe Biden's son in a Ukrainian natural gas company raised ethical issues at a time when the administration is promoting energy diversity in the country.
R. Hunter Biden, a lawyer and a partner in an investment firm, was recently named to the board of directors of Burisma Holdings, a private company that has drilled for natural gas in Ukraine since 2002.
In a statement on Burisma's website, Hunter Biden said he would help the company with "transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion," and other issues.
In April, the vice president traveled to Kiev and discussed how the United States could help provide technical expertise for expanding domestic production of natural gas.

Environmentalists Sue To List As Endangered
Bumble Bee
A bumble bee once common in the United States is disappearing so quickly it should be listed as an endangered species, environmentalists said in a lawsuit filed against U.S. government agencies on Tuesday.
The rusty patched bumble bee is now found in fewer and fewer areas as urbanization and agriculture reshape their traditional habitat on the Midwestern prairies, said the suit, which was filed in U.S. district court in Washington, D.C., against the Interior Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Scientists ascribe the dwindling population to threats including disease, habitat destruction and pesticides, the environmentalists say.
"The leading hypothesis suggests that disease may be playing a role," said Sarina Jepsen, a program director at the Oregon-based Xerces Society, which brought the lawsuit along with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Mourns Wrecked Robot Sub
James Cameron
James Cameron may be "king of the world," but Hollywood's most successful director is in mourning after it was reported that the deep-sea robot submarine Nereus was lost at sea.
The Nereus suffered a catastrophic implosion from underwater pressure during an exploration mission in the Kermadec Trench, located off the coast of northern New Zealand. The submarine assisted Cameron on his history-making 2012 dive in the Mariana Trench.
The robotic vehicle was at a depth of 9,992 meters, about 6.2 miles, when it stopped responding. Operators of Nereus report that they lost contact with the vehicle about 7 hours into its planned 9-hour dive. After an attempted rescue, they spotted pieces of the vehicle floating on the water's surface, confirming that it had imploded under extreme pressure while exploring the trench. Pressures at that depth are estimated to be 1,000 times greater than those at sea level.
Cameron donated the sub he used during the Mariana dive to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), which created the Nereus and assisted him during that expedition.
The Nereus was the only robot submarine of its kind active in the world today. It was able to operate as a semiautonomous vehicle but could also be controlled directly by remote control. Thankfully, there are several other Nereus model submarines currently being built. So the kind of groundbreaking explorations it was undertaking should continue in the near future.

It's Huge!
Petrified Sperm
The oldest petrified sperm ever discovered is gargantuan, at least for a gamete.
The sperm comes from the early Miocene epoch, between about 23 million and 16 million years ago, and belonged to a tiny crustacean called a seed shrimp or ostracod. Seed shrimp are bivalves like muscles, but sport tiny appendages that make them look like walking beans. Though they measure just millimeters long, their sperm often reaches more than 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) in length.
The new fossilized sperm comes from an ancient cave deposit in Australia, where bat guano falling into the water may have helped preserve the cells.
Seed shrimp aren't the only organisms with absurdly long sperm. The longest sperm in nature today belongs to Drosophila bifurca, a fruit fly whose seed stretches to more than 2 inches (5 centimeters).
But ostracod sperm is extra odd, because it lacks the familiar tail, or flagellum, that propels most sperm cells. Instead, ostracod sperm consists of a large, elongate head. This entire structures moves by contracting organelles along its membrane, which causes the sperm cell to ripple and rotate.

Malik Bendjelloul
Malik Bendjelloul, the director of Oscar-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," died on Tuesday evening in the Stockholm area, police said. He was 36.
Bendjelloul won an Oscar in 2013 as a first-time filmmaker for "Searching for Sugar Man." The film followed two South African journalists who set out to find what had become of Sixto Rodriguez, an American singer who was popular in South Africa who seemingly vanished without a trace.
The film, structured like a mystery, sought to find Rodriguez who never achieved fame in his home country but had become a popular and influential folk icon unbeknownst to him in South Africa.
"Searching for Sugar Man" swept major awards from the U.S. directors, producers and writers guilds, and also won audience and special jury awards at the Sundance Film Festival. Bendjelloul was born in the town of Ystad in southern Sweden about 34 miles (55 kilometers) east of Malmo, according to film database IMDB.com.
He had also directed television documentaries about singers Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bjork and German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, according to the Swedish Film Institute.
