Timbuktu is a city in Mali, situated 20 km (12 mi) north of the Niger River. The town is the capital of the Timbuktu Region, one of the eight administrative regions of Mali. It had a population of 54,453 in the 2009 census.
Timbuktu started out as a seasonal settlement and became a permanent settlement early in the 12th century. After a shift in trading routes, Timbuktu flourished from the trade in salt, gold, ivory, and slaves. It became part of the Mali Empire early in the 14th century. In the first half of the 15th century, the Tuareg tribes took control of the city for a short period until the expanding Songhai Empire absorbed the city in 1468. A Moroccan army defeated the Songhai in 1591 and made Timbuktu, rather than Gao, their capital. The invaders established a new ruling class, the Arma, who after 1612 became virtually independent of Morocco. However, the golden age of the city, during which it was a major learning and cultural centre of the Mali Empire, was over, and it entered a long period of decline. Different tribes governed until the French took over in 1893, a situation that lasted until it became part of the current Republic of Mali in 1960. Presently, Timbuktu is impoverished and suffers from desertification.
In its Golden Age, the town's numerous Islamic scholars and extensive trading network made possible an important book trade: together with the campuses of the Sankore Madrasah, an Islamic university, this established Timbuktu as a scholarly centre in Africa. Several notable historic writers, such as Shabeni and Leo Africanus, have described Timbuktu. These stories fuelled speculation in Europe, where the city's reputation shifted from being extremely rich to being mysterious.

Mali. A landlocked country in north-west Africa. Timbuktu is located in the southern end of Mali. Except for the summer rains, the only water available to the residents of Timbuktu comes from the Niger River, which is 12 miles away. Sounds like a hot, dusty in hospitable place. Most of the (30,000 or so) residents live in poverty and the region's soil and climate suffers from the effects of desertification. Mali was a French colony until 1960 and French is the official language.

• The Ramones' double live DVD Ramones: It's Alive 1974-1996 contains much material on the seminal punk band, including material that shows the band at its best - and at its worst. For example, sometimes lead singer Joey Ramone is unable to say all the words of a song or to pronounce all the words clearly either because the band is playing too fast or because he is exhausted or ill. One interesting moment is when a woman attempts to use sign language to communicate the lyrics of "Warthog" (sung by Dee Dee) but gives up and shrugs because the only word she can understand is "warthog."
• A performance on tour of the opera Othello was a disaster. The instruments, traveling on another train, were late in arriving and so the performance did not even begin until 10 p.m. Even then, much of the orchestra was missing, and the musicians arrived one by one after locating their instruments. By 1:30 a.m., tenor Leo Slezak, playing Othello, was exhausted, so he whispered to Madame Rappold, playing Desdemona, to please go kill herself. Madame Rappold obligingly climbed the steps, lay down on the bed, squeaked, and "died" without Othello anywhere near her.
• German contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heink once wore a train on a formal gown while singing in a concert. Unfortunately, while walking on stage, her train caught on a steel tack and pulled loose. She responded well to a situation that would have embarrassed many singers. Ms. Schumann-Heink simply picked up the train, draped it across the piano, and said to the audience, "Vell! Unt vhat doo you teenk off dot!" This endeared her to the audience even before she had sung a note.
• Opera singer Helen Traubel suffered from stage fright, as did violinist Jascha Heifetz. Before performing at a New York concert, they compared notes. Mr. Heifetz asked Ms. Traubel to feel his hands. She did - they were like ice. She told him, "I can't have you feel the inside of my throat, but it's the same way." Ms. Traubel was relieved to learn about Mr. Heifetz' stage fright - she had thought that she was the only scaredy-cat in the music business.
• At one point, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson owned an apartment building in which she lived. However, she ran into a problem. She liked to sing whenever the spirit moved her, and the spirit moved her to sing loudly. Unfortunately, the spirit did not always move her tenants to listen to her. She once wrote, "Even though they were my tenants, the people still came flying upstairs to scold me when I sang loud to myself."
• Bluesman Robert Lockwood once went into a town to look for himself. He played in Elaine, Arkansas, then went back home, where he heard that fellow bluesman Robert Johnson was in Elaine. Mr. Lockwood wanted to see Mr. Johnson, so he went back to Elaine, where he discovered that a mistake had been made. A man had seen Mr. Lockwood playing and had thought that Mr. Lockwood was Mr. Johnson.
• In Texas, country music singer Willie Nelson was pulled over by a state highway patrolman for speeding. When Mr. Nelson opened the door and got out, smoke got out with him - lots of smoke. (Willie does not identify the kind of smoke in his book The Facts of Life and Other Dirty Jokes, but we can guess.) The highway patrolman coughed, then said, "Willie, when are you gonna grow up?"

SyFy has the movie 'The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift', followed by the movie 'Fast & Furious'.
Legendary drag queen RuPaul made a special appearance during a very special primetime episode of The Price Is Right at Night on Monday. The Emmy-winning creator of RuPaul's Drag Race did not play, but he did root for all the contestants because the show matched the value of the prizes with a donation to the charity of his choosing.
It was a great night for contestants, as all six of them won their respective games. And since two of the prizes were cars, the prize total added up to $97,266. While RuPaul was excited about The Price Is Right donating almost $100,000 to Planned Parenthood, many viewers were not.
Planned Parenthood has provided much needed medical support to communities for over 100 years, though recently it has come under intense scrutiny by pro-life advocates anti-choice forced-birthers concerning some of the birth control methods.
The episode included appearances from other cast members Lea Thompson, Mary Steenburgen and Elisabeth Shue, plus a surprise appearance at the end from Claudia Wells, who played Marty McFly's girlfriend Jennifer in the first movie before the character was re-cast with Shue for the second and third films.
Director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale also joined the reunion, as did Huey Lewis - who wrote "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" for the first film - and the trilogy's composer Alan Silvestri. For good measure, Gad even roped in director J.J. Abrams simply because he loves Back to the Future.
To help bring the show to a close, the cast of the upcoming Back to the Future musical shared an individually recorded and expertly stitched together rendition of "The Power of Love." The Back to the Future reunion also doubled as a fundraiser for Project Hope and its COVID-19 recovery and relief efforts.
Major media and entertainment law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks said that after its internal data systems were hacked - and a vast trove of information on its clients was stolen - it has informed its roster of A-list clients of the breach.
News of the hack surfaced last week, after a hacker group claimed it infiltrated the Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks network and stole a whopping 756 gigabytes of documents on multiple music and entertainment figures. Those include clients past and present, among them: Lady Gaga, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige, Ella Mai, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Cam Newton, Bette Midler, Jessica Simpson, Priyanka Chopra, Idina Menzel and Run DMC, the hackers claimed.
The data stolen by the hackers allegedly includes contracts, nondisclosure agreements, phone numbers and email addresses, and private correspondence, the group's claims posted on a dark web forum, according to cybersecurity firm Emsisoft. The group behind the attack didn't release all the data they had supposedly purloined. To show the hack was real, they released an excerpt from a contract for Madonna's 2019-20 "Madame X" tour with Live Nation.
It's evidently a ransomware attack, in which cybercriminals use the threat of releasing the stolen data as leverage to extort payment. It is not known what demands the hackers have made in connection with the theft of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks data.
The guitar Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana's famed MTV Unplugged in New York concert is headed to auction with a starting estimate of $1 million.
The guitar will be part of the "Music Icons" sale at Julien's Auctions, taking place June 19th and 20th in Beverly Hills and on the Julien's Auctions website. Prior to the sale, the guitar will be on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus, London, May 15th through 31st, and at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, June 15th through 19th.
The guitar is a 1959 Martin D-18E, and the auction lot also comes with the original hard-shell case that Cobain had adorned with a flyer for the band Poison Idea's 1990 album, Feel the Darkness. (The case is also stamped with three baggage-claim ticket stubs and an Alaska Airlines sticker.) Inside the case is a half-used pack of Martin guitar strings, three picks, and a "suede 'stash' bag" that's decorated with a small silver spoon, fork, and knife.
Along with the Unplugged guitar, the "Music Icons" sale will feature other Nirvana lots, including a smashed Fender Strat Cobain used during the 1994 In Utero tour, the silver lamé shirt he wore in the "Heart-Shaped Box" video, the typed set list from the Unplugged concert, and the lyric sheets he used for "Plateau," "The Man Who Sold the World," and "Lake of Fire." Last October, the cardigan Cobain wore during Unplugged sold at Julien's Auctions for a record $334,000.
Doctors Without Borders is best known for sending medical professionals into international conflict zones in the midst of medical crises. The organization has teams in Afghanistan, Iran, Sierra Leone, Venezuela and 66 other countries. It did not, however, have a medical presence in the U.S. - until now.
Jean Stowell, head of the organization's U.S. COVID-19 Response Team, told CBS News that Doctors Without Borders has dispatched a team of nine to the hard-hit Navajo Nation in the southwest U.S. because of the crisis unfolding there. The team consists of two physicians, three nurse/midwives, a water sanitation specialist, two logisticians and a health promoter who specializes in community health education.
"There are many situations in which we do not intervene in the United States, but this has a particular risk profile," Stowell said. "Situationally, the Native American communities are at a much higher risk for complications from COVID-19 and also from community spread because they don't have access to the variety of things that make it possible to self-isolate… You can't expect people to isolate if they have to drive 100 miles to get food and water. "
The fact that Navajo Nation is a food desert, dependent on the U.S. government for nutritious commodity foods, has only intensified the situation. What's more, an estimated 1 in 3 residents lack access to running water.
In a memo to employees Friday, the Fox Corporation announced workers will be told to telework for at least another month, CNN reported.
According to CNN's Brian Stelter, the memo sent Friday tells Fox Corp. employees - which include employees of Fox News - that they will not begin a gradual return to the company's offices until June 15 at the earliest. The date could be pushed back even further, according to CNN.
The memo, sent by Fox Corp. Chief Operating Officer John Nallen, says that the company's properties would reopen in "phases," sources told CNN.
The memo comes as the network's on-air personalities have for weeks been echoing President Donald Trump (R-Failure)'s calls to reopen shuttered portions of the country, from schools to businesses. Coronavirus cases continue to rise, and models predict even more cases as states reopen early.
As Business Insider reported on April 3 - over a month ago - Fox News anchors had already been calling on the president to end lockdown efforts meant to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo (R-Domionist) headed to Jerusalem on Tuesday to bolster besieged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and bestow a U.S. blessing on his country's proposed de facto annexation of West Bank land claimed by Palestinians.
The visit coincides with Netanyahu's formation of a new coalition government following his indictment on criminal corruption charges and several inconclusive Israeli elections that failed to deliver power to either Netanyahu or his rival.
It is the first high-level U.S. visit to Israel since President Trump in January unveiled his long-anticipated plan for settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - a pro-Israel proposal that was roundly rejected by Palestinians, who were not included in its drafting, as well as most of the Arab world.
The Trump administration, reversing decades of U.S. foreign policy, is ready to welcome Israel's unilateral annexation of the Jewish settlements, despite fierce opposition by Palestinians, senior U.S. officials said. Pompeo's visit seems designed to give that approval.
Under the Trump plan, Israel would also be allowed to take control of the Jordan Valley, the section of the West Bank along the Jordan River and abutting Jordan.
Sinkhole Reveals 2,000-Year-Old Roman Paving Stones
Rome
A sinkhole unexpectedly opened up in front of the Pantheon in Rome last month, revealing imperial paving stones that were laid over a millennia ago, news sources report.
The sinkhole, located in the Piazza della Rotonda, is almost 10 square feet (1 square meter) wide and just over 8 feet (2.5 m) deep. Inside the hole, archaeologists found seven ancient slabs made of travertine, a type of sedimentary rock.
The stones uncovered by the sinkhole were created around the same time that the Pantheon was built, from 27 B.C. to 25 B.C., according to Daniela Porro, Rome special superintendent. They were designed by Marcus Agrippa, a friend of Emperor Augustus, Porro told Italian news agency ANSA. However, the Pantheon and the piazza were completely rebuilt sometime between A.D. 118 and 128 by the emperor Hadrian, and the area was further modified at the beginning of the third century by the emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
Sinkholes, called "voragine" in Italian, are now fairly common in Rome. For most of the past 100 years or so, Rome typically experienced 30 voragini or other collapses every year; but that number began tripling starting in 2009, according to The Local, an Italian news outlet. For example, in 2018 the city counted a record-breaking 175 sinkholes, and 2019 brought 100 of these voragini, The Local reported. By comparison, Naples had 20 reported sinkholes in 2019.
