Have You Ever Considered A Career In Mashups?
By DJ Useo
Try THE INSTITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS
I hope this week's column doesn't sound too much like an advertisement, but I wanted to tell you about the INSTITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS (www.theinstituteofbootleggers.blogspot.com).
I love mashups, so it's great to see a new compilation of great tracks by top mixers, I want to write about it. The INSITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS PRESENTS VOLUME 1 brings together 19 already-released, but newly-mastered tracks into one fantastic package & gives it to you as a gift. Sometimes the market of bootlegs gets crowded & so a small band of mixers has banded together to make sure you hear the winners they made. With well-known names like Miss Frenchie, DJ Le CLown & World Famous Audio Hacker, among many more, you can be certain the excitement never lets up.
All tracks involved were hand-picked by each DJ as the track that best represented their mixing ability. The comp starts off with the stomper 'POP GENERATION' (The Who vs M) by the afore-mentioned Miss Frenchie. This track tore up the downloads in it's initial solo release & more will now be allowed to sample it's dj-fueled energy through this wider-release. DJ Dylan recently made the Toronto Star Anti-Hit List with his charmer 'THE LITTLEST MASHUP' (Snoop Dogg vs The Littlest Hobo) & now you get it - plus more! Funk That Shit Productions has designated his massive hit from 2007 'BELIEVE IN GLORY BOX' (CHER vs Portishead) as his contribution & it is every bit the mashup keeper you expect. DJ Le Clown, a popular mixer through his bastard pop tracks & accompanying videos stars on The INSITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS PRESENTS VOLUME 1 through his presented cut 'U NOT ALONE' (The Beatles vs Will Smith vs Michael Jackson). The Le Clown track, of course, comes with splendidly-crafted video in a power-push of promotional packaging. Sample it's energy (www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK0KaTrKz2g), & you will be a happy camper.
Included in this release are many bootleggers you will want to hear more from. To aid you in this pursuit, here is a list of participating INSTITUTE BOOTLEGGERS -

DJ Petrushka has a vocal invite for volume 2 that I have hosted here on my Multiply site (djuseo.multiply.com/music/item/1756/The_Institute_Of_Bootleggers_Presents_Vol.1) -
I'll spare you a track by track review of this album, but believe me, it's jam-packed with great Mixers like TIZWARZ, DJ M.i.F., DJ Spider & even ends with an amazing 15-minute remix of PORCUPINE TREE by DREAMTIME. There's good variety with mashups that employ great artists like DURAN DURAN, LIL' WAYNE, THE HIVES, ERIC PRYDZ, & even the RAMONES. There's incredible mixing production through the impressive talent of a group with much experience, & drive. Check with THE INSTITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS regularly for more single mashups, remix eps' & bootleg collections.
Mix Of The Week - To coincide with her incredible appearance on the INSTITUTE comp, I know bring you Miss Frenchies' Easter BBQ Mix.Live (missfrenchie.podbean.com/2009/04/11/easter-bbq-mix/) & raw it may be, but you will love every second of it.
Let the music flow over you & you will know the joy of a Miss Frenchie long set.
Mashup Tip : Always post your track to the left.

Trivia contest
Hi, Marty
I used to enjoy reading your daily trivia questions, and sending in answers now and then. But at the risk of sounding like "sour grapes," I want to say that since you've been running this contest, I don't even bother reading the trivia questions. Why do it if I can't submit an answer? Sorry, but that's the way I feel.
Still love reading BartCop Entertainment daily!

Thanks, Leo!
The current contest is taking up way too much of my time, so it'll be wrapping sooner than anticipated.
OTOH, I'm not likely to pass up offers of free books (or DVDs) to giveaway in the future.

Talks About John Lennon Exhibit
Yoko Ono
A new John Lennon exhibit is particularly emotional for his widow, Yoko Ono. Besides Lennon's guitars, letters and other personal effects, it also includes a paper bag containing the bloody clothes from the night he was shot to death.
"It was hard to include," Ono said. "And I thought it might be criticized as well."
But ultimately, Ono thought it was important to let people see the effects of gun violence.
The Lennon items are part of a new exhibit that will launch Tuesday at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex. "John Lennon: The New York Years" includes Lennon's famous New York City T-shirt, his upright piano from his Dakota apartment, and a posthumous 1981 Grammy Award for the couple's album "Double Fantasy."

Pulls Out Of Oxford Race
Derek Walcott
Oxford University said Tuesday that Nobel Prize winning poet Derek Walcott had pulled out of the race to become its next poetry professor, reportedly amid dirty tricks linked to alleged sexual harassment.
Voting for the prestigious post -- which dates back to 1708 and was previously held by WH Auden and Seamus Heaney -- takes place Saturday.
But Walcott will not now be on the ballot after 200 academics were reportedly sent a dossier detailing a sexual harassment claim against him in 1982. He has never commented on the allegations.
The poet himself, who was born in Saint Lucia and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, told London's Evening Standard newspaper he did not want to be part of the race "if it has degenerated into a low and degrading attempt at character assassination."

Nursing Home Visit
Prince William
Catherine Masters had always wanted to meet a member of Britain's royal family. But when she finally got the chance at age 109, she couldn't resist offering it a little advice.
When Prince William made a surprise visit to Masters' nursing home near the upper crust city of Oxford on Friday, she gave him a fashion tip for his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Like all British centenarians, Masters received a royal birthday card from the queen when she turned 100, 105 and every year thereafter. But Masters doesn't think each card should picture her royal highness in the same yellow dress.
In an interview with the Oxford Mail newspaper, Masters said she told William that the queen should be pictured in a new dress. "I think either a blue one or white one would be nice," she was quoted as saying.

Sets Record
Blue Diamond
A flawless vivid blue diamond weighing 7.03 carats sold Tuesday for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.49 million), the highest price paid per carat for any gemstone at auction, Sotheby's said.
The rectangular-shaped blue stone, the rarest to enter the international market this year, went to an anonymous buyer bidding by telephone after hectic bidding see-sawed between two callers for 15 minutes.
The final price includes a commission paid by the buyer to the auction house. The stone sets a record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction of $1,349,752, Sotheby's said.
The previous record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond was $7.9 million, including commission, for a stone weighing 6.04 carats at sale in Hong Kong in October 2007, also by Sotheby's.

Parents Voice Concerns
Pat Tillman
The parents of slain Army Ranger and NFL star Pat Tillman voiced concerns Tuesday that the general who played a role in mischaracterizing his death could be put in charge of military operations in Afghanistan.
In a brief interview with The Associated Press, Pat Tillman Sr. accused Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal of covering up the circumstances of the 2004 slaying.
Separately, Mary Tillman called it "imperative" that McChrystal's record be carefully considered before he is confirmed.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Defense Secretary Robert Gates has complete confidence in McChrystal, whom he hopes can be confirmed by the Senate before month's end.
Aides to the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which will consider the nomination, said they were unaware of any opposition to McChrystal.

Sues DirecTV
Charter Communications
Bankrupt Charter Communications Inc is suing DirecTV Group for "false" advertising that it said could give customers the impression Charter is liquidating and that its cable TV services will soon end.
Charter, controlled by Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen, said in its suit that DirecTV had attempted to exploit the fact that Charter filed for bankruptcy to win over customers. The suit was filed at the United States District Court Eastern District of Missouri on Monday.
Charter said DirecTV, the leading U.S. satellite TV provider, launched a national advertising campaign specifically targeted at Charter's 5.5 million customers. The campaign said there was no way Charter could continue to provide more HD channels or exclusive programing, according to Charter.
DirecTV has previously been sued successfully by Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp in cases of false advertising.

The Donald Likes Titty Pics
Miss California USA
Miss California USA can retain her crown after questions arose about semi-nude photographs taken of her as a teenager and her association with a conservative advocacy group for marriage, pageant owner Donald Trump said Tuesday.
Carrie Prejean's comments about her opposition to same-sex marriage ignited a media firestorm after a celebrity judge suggested her response may have cost her the Miss USA title; she finished as first-runner up. The photos surfaced later and led to the review of her state title.
"We've reviewed the pictures carefully," Trump said at a packed news conference at Trump Plaza in New York City. "We've made a determination that the pictures taken were acceptable. Some were risque, but we are in the 21st century."

6 Paintings Stolen
Landscapes
Thieves pried open the emergency door of a small Dutch museum with an iron bar and made off with six 17th- and 19th-century landscape paintings - the second major art heist in 10 days in the Netherlands.
The break-in at 3 a.m. Monday set off an alarm that summoned police within minutes but the burglars already had fled, leaving behind two paintings that they dropped in their haste and damaged, Mark de Kok, a spokesman for the city of IJsselstein, said Tuesday.
The paintings included three by Jan van Goyen, a prolific contemporary of Rembrandt who died in 1656. The others were a 17th century painting by Pieter de Neyn and 19th-century pieces by Willem Roelofs and Adrianus van Everdingen. The damaged works were by Salomon van Ruysdael and Salomon Rombouts.
The paintings, on loan from the Dutch government, were mostly river scenes set in the flat countryside typical of northern Holland, a specialty of the IJsselstein City Museum. The town is a suburb of Utrecht.
