Roaring Appetite For Beatles Mashups
By DJ Useo
I really love the Beatles. I bought all their CD's one a week every payday until I had them all. So what a shock that the very first mashup I discovered
was a Beatles mashup. The Monkees vs the Beatles by GO HOME PRODUCTIONS
[ http://www.gohomeproductions.co.uk/ ] to be accurate. I was a
natural candidate for being attracted to Beatles mashups. (As well as ANY mashups, lol.) One home producer in particular, the prolific and
accomplished MP3J eventually started his own mashup forum to feature his fave group, the Beatles. I joined his new BEATLES REMIXERS GROUP
forum right away and still post there to this day.
That's how I was soon able to compile a 2-disc collection of my own Beatles-related mashups called '
MAST PASTERS VOLUME ONE'
[ suprmchaos.com/bcEnt-Wed-081011.index.html ] .
Now that was back in the terrible year of 2011. (Sorry to mention it. I know we're all trying to forget
every year from 2000 till now) Now in 2013, a devastatingly horrible year so far, I bring relief in the form of a sequel to 'MAST PASTERS VOLUME
ONE' entitled '
MAST PASTERS VOLUME TWO'
[ ] .
The first disc of the new volume is Beatles vs rock music from people like Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, Tom Petty, Killing Joke, and tons more. Disc
two features 'not rock' mashups with the Beatles using artists like Kraftwerk, Coldcut, Gary Numan, Erasure, with a large dose of new techno bands
you probably haven't heard of. Then, it occurred to me that since 2013 has been an abomination of a year so far, I felt you needed something extra to
drive the pleasure home. Thus, I added a bonus 5-track EP of BEATLES VS STRANGLERS mashups for those among you craving that big something
extra. Hmm, it also comes back to my mind that there's a good handful of unreleased tracks on discs one and two. The Cheap Trick vs Beatles track
and the Gary Numan one, among others will be new to everyone. Since the text of this release isn't on my blog, I'd like to present it now for your
edification.

Joining the Fight for Palestinian Freedom
Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking is known for a lot of things - theoretical physics, quantum mechanics, general relativity - but being an an activist for peace in the Middle East is hardly one of them. Not any more! On Tuesday, the Cambridge professor made a bold move when he joined a larger academic boycott of Israel in the name of Palestinian justice. Hawking had previously agreed to attend a conference hosted by Shimon Peres, one that marks the Israeli president's 90th birthday, but after being bombarded by messages from friends and fans decided against going. Although he explained his decision in a brief letter to Peres last week, Hawking hadn't the news wasn't made the news public until The Guardian reported on his decision Tuesday night.
Though private, Hawking was hardly vague about why he was backing out of the conference. The wheelchair-bound 71-year-old said that "his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there." The news was reported quickly and soberly by the Israeli press, as Hawking joins a small but growing list of British celebrities who are taking a stand against Israel's treatment of Palestine.
This isn't the first time that Hawking's spoken out against Palestine, though. While he hardly ever chimes in on global politics, the physicist has actually been turning up the volume on his criticism of Israel. In 2011, he told Al Jazeera that Israel must engage with Hamas to put an end to the violence. "If Israel wants peace, it will have to talk to Hamas, like Britain did with the IRA. Hamas are the democratically elected leaders of the Palestinian people, and cannot be ignored," he said. "The situation is like that in South Africa before 1990. It cannot continue." This statement came after Hawking made a famous visit to the region, one that piqued his interest about the Palestine issue.

First Amendment Awards
Hugh M. Hefner
An atheist student who fought to have a prayer banner at her Rhode Island public high school removed is getting an award named for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
WPRO-AM reports Jessica Ahlquist is among this year's winners of the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards. She won in the education category for what a Tuesday news release calls her "courageous and successful lawsuit."
A May 22 reception is scheduled at the Playboy Mansion, in Los Angeles. An event publicist says Ahlquist will attend. Winners each get $5,000 and a plaque.
Ahlquist was threatened for challenging the Cranston school banner's constitutionality. She has spoken all over the United States about her legal fight. A humanist association raised $60,000 for a scholarship for her.
The Hefner awards were established in 1979 to honor people's contributions to protecting First Amendment rights.

Underwood To Sing Theme
'Sunday Night Football'
Carrie Underwood will take over the theme song for ''Sunday Night Football,'' with NBC sticking to the formula of a female country music star for its intro.
Underwood steps in for Faith Hill, who announced last month that she would not be back for a seventh season. Underwood will sing a new version of ''Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,'' the network said Tuesday.
Producer Fred Gaudelli said that after Hill informed him in February, Underwood was the only performer he pursued. She was under consideration for the role when NBC first broadcast the Sunday night NFL games in 2006.
Pink sang the opening tune, set to Joan Jett's ''I Hate Myself for Loving You,'' for that first season before Hill came on.

Polar Music Prize
Sweden
Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour and Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho have been awarded the international 2013 Polar Music Prize, Sweden's most prestigious award for musicians.
They will each receive 1 million kronor ($153,300) and an invitation to the prize ceremony in Stockholm Aug. 27.
In its awarding citation on Tuesday, the prize committee said 53-year-old N'Dour, who has collaborated with artists including Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Neneh Cherry, has a voice that "encompasses an entire continent's history and future, blood and love, dreams and power."
The committee described 60-year-old Saariaho as a unique composer "who re-examines what music can be" by combining acoustic instruments with electronics and computers.
The award, founded in 1989 by the late Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, has been handed out every year since 1992 and is typically shared by a pop artist and a classical musician. Previous laureates include artists Patti Smith, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and bands such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

CIA Memo
'Zero Dark Thirty'
"Zero Dark Thirty" screenwriter Mark Boal acquiesced to CIA requests to change material in the film that would have reflected poorly on the agency, according to a newly declassified memo.
The drama's depiction of the role torture played in the hunt for Osama bin Laden set off fierce debate when it theaters last year, although much of the furor surrounding the film died down after it lost the Oscar for Best Picture to "Argo."
Those issues may bubble up again now that the memo from an unnamed public affairs officer has been released to Gawker under a Freedom of Information Act request. It shows Boal agreeing to delete or alter scenes that the spy service objected to.
In a series of conference calls in the fall of 2011, Boal agreed to change a scene that would have shown the CIA agent portrayed by Jessica Chastain assisting in enhanced interrogation of a detainee. He did so because the agency objected to its accuracy.

As I Lay Dying
Tim Lambesis
Tim Lambesis, lead singer for the christian heavy metal band As I Lay Dying, has been arrested over accusations he sought the help of an undercover detective to have his estranged wife killed, police said.
Lambesis was taken into custody on Tuesday in Oceanside, California, after he solicited help from the detective, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. Police had previously learned Lambesis was seeking someone who could commit the slaying, the department said.
A representative for the As I Lay Dying's record label could not immediately be reached for comment, and it was unclear if Lambesis had an attorney.
The band's 2007 album "An Ocean Between Us" debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 list, and ranks as one of their top-selling releases. Last year, As I Lay Dying put out its sixth album, "Awakened." Lambesis is a founding member of the band, which was formed in San Diego.

PepsiCo To Meet With Family
Emmett Till
PepsiCo Inc. officials will meet Wednesday with members of Emmett Till's family and the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Sharpton continued to press for the meeting last week after the company's partnerships with Lil Wayne and Tyler, the Creator, of Odd Future to promote Mountain Dew sparked controversies.
PepsiCo and Lil Wayne have since parted over creative differences after the rapper's offensive lyrics related to the civil rights icon Till. The company also pulled a commercial directed by Tyler that angered anti-violence and civil rights advocates.
Sharpton said last week that corporations have a civic responsibility when deciding who they partner with.

Assault Trial Set
Flavor Flav
A Las Vegas judge has scheduled a September trial for entertainer Flavor Flav on felony charges he chased and threatened his longtime girlfriend's 17-year-old son with a butcher knife.
A court spokeswoman says the case is set for Sept. 30 in Clark County District Court for the 54-year-old former rap and reality TV star. His legal name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr.
Drayton pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Nevada state court to felony assault with a weapon and child endangerment charges stemming from a family argument last October.
A local judge who heard the teen testify last month decided there was enough evidence for Drayton to stand trial in state court.

Family Feud
Jim Thorpe
The tiny hamlet of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, could lose its namesake, an American sports hero whose interment put the town on the map.
A family squabble has turned into a federal court battle over the remains of the legendary Native American athlete and Olympic medalist, who died in 1953 and whose life was depicted in "All American," a 1951 movie starring Burt Lancaster.
The dispute could take an important turn this week, when the borough court will announce on Thursday whether it will appeal a federal district court judge's decision that could eventually clear the way for Thorpe's remains to leave town.
Jim Thorpe never lived in the eastern Pennsylvania town that took his name, but his remains were placed in a mausoleum here in an agreement with his widow allowing the settlement to be named after him.
Six decades later, a feud over where Thorpe should be buried has pitted his two sons, who want to move him back to native lands in Oklahoma, against his grandchildren, who want him to stay in the Pennsylvania town that erected statues and a monument "to one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century."

Opera Creates Scandal In Germany
"Tannhauser"
A modern production of Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhauser" is causing a stir in Germany because of Nazi-themed scenes showing people dying in gas chambers and members of a family having their heads shaved before being executed.
A spokeswoman for the Dusseldorf opera house said Tuesday that members of the audience "booed and were shocked" by Saturday's opening performance.
At the opening of the Duesseldorf performance, performers could be seen inside glass chambers, falling to the floor as white fog flowed - an allusion to the mass killings of the Jews in the Nazis' death camps. After a half hour, the music stopped and a family stepped on stage. The parents and their children were having their hair shaved off and then they are shot dead - another reference to treatment of Jewish captives during the Holocaust.
The original Tannhauser opera is set in the Middle Ages and was first performed in Dresden in 1845. It is based on a traditional ballad about the bard Tannhauser and features a singing contest at the Wartburg Castle in south-central Germany.

Margaret Ruth Groening
Margaret Groening died peacefully in her sleep on April 22, 2013, in Portland. Born Margaret Wiggum on March 23, 1919, in Chisolm, Minn., Margaret was 94 years old.
Margaret's parents, Matt and Ingeborg Wiggum, met on the boat coming to America from Norway. They settled in Everett, Wash., where the paper mill "smelled like money," and Matt worked as a machinist. As high school valedictorian and Miss Everett, Margaret's highest honor was being named May Queen of Linfield College. She graduated from Linfield in 1941 and married classmate Homer Groening, whom she chose because he made her laugh the most.
Margaret taught high school English before starting a family, and her love of language was apparent in the many Double-Crostics she completed (in ink). Margaret and Homer supported the Oregon Symphony, the Portland Trail Blazers and many local yarn shops (Margaret was a talented needlework artist).
Besides Homer, Margaret was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Patty, who died in Jan., 2013. She is survived by her brother, Arnold; her children, Mark, Matt, Lisa and Maggie; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family thanks the wonderful caregivers from Visiting Angels and the hospice nurses from Housecall Providers. Special appreciation also goes to loyal friend, Grace Clark.

Ray Harryhausen
The name Ray Harryhausen probably isn't familiar to the average moviegoer, but fans of today's science fiction and fantasy films owe a debt to the legendary effects wizard, who died Tuesday at the age of 92.
For decades, Harryhausen was Hollywood's premiere stop motion effects artist, building models that would seemingly interact with actors on screen in films ranging from "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" through his final film, 1981's "Clash of the Titans."
In recent years, most of Harryhausen's animation techniques have been supplanted by computer-generated imagery (CGI). But even animators who create their effects entirely on computers today use techniques pioneered by Harryhausen and his tiny physical models.
Beginning his career during the golden age of science fiction, Harryhausen counted many of the genre's towering figures among his contemporaries. For example, Harryhausen joined the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society at the urging of friends Ray Bradbury and Forrest J Ackerman in the 1930s. Bradbury would go on to write some of science fiction and fantasy's seminal novels, including "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Martian Chronicles."
Along the way, Harryhausen created the effects for some of the most beloved genre films in history, including titles such as "Jason and the Argonauts."
