M Is FOR MASHUP - May 7th 2014

An Album Of Mashups That Tell Stories -
The Legend Of Mashups

By DJ Useo

Howdy, y'all. I've been working up the annual SUMMER BOOTY Summer mashup collection. It's about halfway done with well over a month till deadline. Wow, is it going great. The tracks blow my mind, and a good batch of them arrived even before I sent out invites. Meanwhile, as Super Administrator for the new AUDIOBOOTS mashup forum, I'm part of a small team working to release 80s MASHED 3, which is the third in a series we began at the now closed SoundUnsound Mashup forum. That album was started more recently than the Summer Booty one, but they're close to being tied as far as being finished. On both compilations, we're looking for two discs total.

Meanwhile, to fill in the perceived gap between mashup albums, I arranged a private project called "DJ Useo Presents THE LEGEND OF MASHUPS". It came together very quickly, and very much fulfilled my plan to feature producers who are less known nowadays, but deserve to be heard by virtue of their tunes. The names appear to be more unknown than I expected, as I've already heard from some asking if all the tracks are actually by me. Lol. Honestly, all nineteen contributors are separate distinct people.

The album is awesome, I think. Allow me to briefly describe each track.

playlist

01 - LFO Lets Go ( prolock )

     ( LFO vs 'unknown' )

This opening slammer beeps and pulses HARD. A floor fill, as we DJ's say.

02 - 7 Nation Rocker ( Idc )

( Alter Ego vs White Stripes )

This features the bassline that never stops, but it's highlighted by immense searing synth stomping.

03 - Everybodys Wants Du Hast ( DJ Useo )

( Tears For Fears vs Rammstein vs Nacim Ladj )

I put the two instrumental tracks together, and then searched for "the right vocal". I think this is it. It's techno metal new wave pop!

04 - Baby, You're A Pure Man ( BRAT Mix )

( The Beatles vs All Saints )

This mix contains truly beautiful music expressed through chill club and Fab Four!

05 - Class A Drugs ( Churchill )

     ( Babamania vs Prodigy )

Now for the best in clubbers bass with a generous sprinkling of lively hip hop vocals. Zarjaz!

06 - Brick in the Wall pt2 / Come Together (DJ DUBZ )

( Pink Floyd vs Primal Scream )

Brick in the wall becomes comfortably numb when Primal Scream meets Pink Floyd.

07 - Dub Me Baby One More Time ( ultra396 Disco Dub Platter )

( Britney vs Big Youth )

Outer space synth skanking moves an insistent beat as Britney croons irresistibly.

08 - Faint Britney ( Nowmash )

( Linkin Park vs Britney Spears )

Now to show how Britney can rock out she joins with the rapping, and hard rocking of Linkin Park.

09 - Mr Roboto vs DJ Dan ( arcade2600 )

( Styx vs DJ Dan )

Totally techno club beats propel Styx classic rock pop into unassailable appealing ness.

10 - Shake Too Hard ( Agent Lovelette )

( Peaches vs Mark One )

Sample heavy house music pairs with naughty Peaches vocals to superb effect. NSFW!

11 - No More Pressure ( MessyJames )

( David Bowie vs Annie Lennox vs No Doubt )

Pure pop joy as the "gods of music" share a gorgeous bootleg stage. This is actually Messy James first mashup! Not that you can tell !!

12 - Intergalactic Puppets ( Eddache )

( Beastie Boys vs Metallica )

Hold your lighters up for full on metal hip hop ! This type of tune is why speakers were invented. ;)

13 - Song 2 Divided By Zero ( Filthy McNasty )

( Pet Shop Boys vs Blur )

Mind possessing guitar hooks mingle with melodic emotive vocals. You won't forget this one soon.

14 - Sweet Touch, Bad Dreams ( Manriki )

( Bloodhound Gang vs Eurythmics )

The most wonderful genre clash track ever. How does it work so well ? Only Manriki knows.

15 - Voodoo Problems ( TiM G )

     ( Jay-Z vs Jimi Hendrix )

Guitar God meets vocal genius and magic occurs. This one's a head turner.

16 - Truly Too Close For Tears ( DJ David X )

( Tears For Fears vs Spandau Ballet )

The refined chill of Spandau Ballet heightens the appeal of TFF's Shout, plus more.

17 - Turn on the News ( DJ Nite )

( Kathy Brown vs Praxis )

BBC them gone all cool with haunting vocals. Notice the recurring them between the two.

18 - Can't Get It On ( Xerox Soundsystem )

( Moguai vs Soul Searcher )

This gem quickly insinuates into your cerebral cortex instilling a command that must be obeyed. That command is DANCE !!

19 - The Morning Glory I Love ( FaultSide )

     ( R.E.M. vs Oasis )

Holy SNECK is this closing track ever the best! Oasis' rocking rips you a new one, while R.E.M. delights you with pure melody.

Together, they display the finest in mashup recordings.

A lessor point still worth mentioning is I personally mastered, and engineered the album so they'd all play in the same sonic landscape. Try them LOUD for best effect! I deliberately avoided those face-ripping trebles that some artists torture you with. All praise to the featured mixers. Also, thanks to the magnificent source artists who inspired the bootleggers to bootleg these bootlegs. ( leg )

BadtotheboneBob's Trivia Question from Yesterday

In December '74, Paul McCartney wanted to do a science-fiction movie musical. Who was the notable sci-fi author that he asked to write the screenplay?

      Isaac Asimov                                                      Source

In December 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney approached Asimov and asked him if he could write the screenplay for a science-fiction movie musical. McCartney had a vague idea for the plot and a small scrap of dialogue; he wished to make a film about a rock band whose members discover they are being impersonated by a group of extraterrestrials. The band and their impostors would likely be played by McCartney's group Wings, then at the height of their career. Intrigued by the idea, although he was not generally a fan of rock music, Asimov quickly produced a "treatment" or brief outline of the story. He adhered to McCartney's overall idea, producing a story he felt to be moving and dramatic. However, he did not make use of McCartney's brief scrap of dialogue, and probably as a consequence, McCartney rejected the story. The treatment now exists only in the Boston University archives.        Source

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
   Isaac Asimov

I don't remember, had Paul gotten over being dead by '74?
I've never liked much of his solo stuff anyhow.

Adam answered:
   Isaac Asimov.

Lois Giving Peace A Chance In Oregon replied:
That would be the lovely and talented Isaac Asimov, who sadly was too busy writing dirty limericks to help Paul achieve his dream, so that today Paul must be content writing the "Love Theme For Halo XIII": "Someone's knocking at the door, somebody's ringing the bell. Do me a favor and open...AARRGGGHHH, he shot me!" Here is a picture of Paul getting inspiration from a young person. In his line of work, it's important to be hep.

Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
   Isaac Asimov

PS: Here it is May, and I've not planted on vegetable or flower yet! I do have some peppers growing in my kitchen, but nothing else. We have had 2 garden centers sell off their land to condo builders this year alone.. Since I don't drive, I have to get to another center and soon...

Dreamy Dale of Diamond Sprungs, Norcalify, answered:
Isaac Asimov is the author. "Five and Five and One" is a science fiction rock opera suggested to Isaac Asimov by Paul McCartney, but as Asimov noted on the first page of his treatment, "nothing ever came of it because McCartney couldn't recognize good stuff." Eeewwwww!!!! Old Isaac really spanked the Beatle's ass good. Pauli didn't like his treatment because he left a little bit of his dialogue out.
By the way-Paul and Band are ending their 2014 tour by closing out Candlestick Park (its very last event befour being torn down). That group he used to be in played their last public concert there on August 29, 1966. No, I didn't go to that one. I was a Stones guy until they started trip pin! They want $260 a seat for a good seat. Already sold out. Can't wait to see how much Stub-hub fucking scalpers get for the seats.
Long live John! Note the price.

DJ Useo responded:
Douglas Adams is the answer according to my pals at Beatles Remixers Group.
  I think I would've enjoyed that collaboration.

BartCop

Hello Bartcop fans,

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and provide email lists and groups for those who might put something together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to active@bartcop.com.

So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.

I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing
( www.stitcher.com/s?eid=32893545 )

The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

You can listen to Bart's theme song here

( youtu.be/MySGAaB0A9k )

We have opened up the radio show archives which are now free. Listen to all you want.
( bartcop.com/members )

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received. Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate button on bartcop.com

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So here's the signup link for this email list.

Brunei Boycott Grows

Beverly Hills Hotel

Hollywood is responding to harsh new laws in the tiny Southeast Asia nation of Brunei by boycotting the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The Motion Picture & Television Fund says it won't hold its annual Night Before the Oscar party at the hotel as it has for many years.

Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, has praised his country's new laws as a "great achievement."

Others boycotting the Sultan's Dorchester Collection of hotels include Richard Branson's Virgin Group; the Hollywood Reporter, which traditionally holds a starry media breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel; and the Feminist Majority Foundation, which moved its annual Global Women's Rights Awards on Monday from the Beverly Hills Hotel to the nearby Hammer Museum.

Mavis Leno, co-chair with husband Jay Leno of the Global Women's Rights Awards, said the new penalties for adultery, abortion and homosexuality in Brunei "violate international law and have no place in civilized society."

Gun Culture 'Way Out Of Balance'

Hillary

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday the nation's gun culture has gotten "way out of balance" and the U.S. needs to rein in the notion that "anybody can have a gun, anywhere, anytime."

The former secretary of state and potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidate said the idea that anyone can have a gun is not in the "best interest of the vast majority of people." But she said that approach does not conflict with the rights of people to own firearms.

Clinton waded into the polarizing issue of gun politics during an appearance at the National Council for Behavioral Health conference in Oxon Hill, Maryland, pointing to recent shootings that involved teens who had been playing loud music and chewing gum and a separate incident involving the typing of text messages in a movie theater.

"I think again we're way out of balance. I think that we've got to rein in what has become an almost article of faith that anybody can have a gun anywhere, anytime," Clinton said. "And I don't believe that is in the best interest of the vast majority of people. And I think you can say that and still support the right of people to own guns."

Extended Two More Years

Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel's late night show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" has been extended for two more years, ABC said on Tuesday, sealing the late-night line-ups across the main U.S. networks for the next few years.

Kimmel, 46, has presided over the show for 11 seasons. He moved to an earlier, high-visibility 11:35 p.m. time slot in January 2013, where ratings increased despite head-to-head competition from veteran David Letterman on CBS and NBC's "Tonight Show," which Jay Leno left earlier this year.

Walt Disney Co-owned ABC confirmed Kimmel's extension and will formally announce it later on Tuesday, an important endorsement of Kimmel's late-night formula as competing networks swap out veterans for younger hosts.

TVLine has learned that Michael Weatherly's new deal to return to TV's most watched drama for Seasons 12 and 13 is due to close imminently, while Sean Murray, Pauley Perrette, David McCallum and Rocky Carroll already have signed on the dotted line.

Fellow series regulars Mark Harmon, Brian Dietzen and Emily Wickersham are working off different contract cycles.

NSA's Close Working Relationship

Google

Google wasn't cooperating with the National Security Agency's spying program, as the company has vehemently claimed again and again, why were the guys in charge of each organization emailing so much in 2011 and 2012?

That's the question raised by a series of emails between then-NSA director Keith Alexander and Google chairman Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin starting in late 2011. The emails were published by Al Jazeera America on Tuesday.

The correspondence suggests a close relationship between the NSA and Google before former NSA contractor Edward Snowden ever leaked documents detailing the agency's online spying efforts. One of the two email chains describe a meeting between the NSA director and Google executives near an airport in San Jose, Calif.

Google executives have maintained since the Snowden revelations that the search giant does not give the U.S. government access to its servers and the personal information of its users unless it is legally compelled to. If the government does have such access, Google does not know about it, Schmidt publicly stated in November.

Vanity Fair

Monica Lewinsky

Monica Lewinsky says there's no question her boss - Bill Clinton - "took advantage" of her when he was president.

But she says their affair was consensual and if there was any abuse involved, it came afterward, when Clinton's inner circle tried to discredit her and the president's opponents used her as a political pawn.

The former White House intern, now 40, writes about her life in the next issue of Vanity Fair magazine, out this month. In released excerpts, she says she's perhaps the first Internet era scapegoat and wants to speak out on behalf of other victims of online humiliation.

Lewinsky writes that she deeply regrets the affair and made a point of staying silent through several presidential campaigns to avoid becoming a distraction. Now, she writes, it's time to stop "tiptoeing around my past - and other people's futures. I am determined to have a different ending to my story. I've decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet."

Another Day, Another Version

U-2

The primary air traffic control system around Los Angeles shut down last week because data from the a U-2 spy plane's flight plan confused software that helps track and route aircraft around the region, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday.

When the system failed Wednesday, a backup helped safely guide flights already in the air, but hundreds of planes across the nation headed for Southern California were ordered not to take off as an air traffic control facility about 40 miles north of Los Angeles effectively rebooted.

The problem had nothing to do with spy-related signals sent by the Cold War-era plane.

The plane flies at around 60,000 feet under "visual flight rules." According to the FAA, a computer perceived a conflict between the altitude and the use of visual flight rules, and began trying to route the plane to 10,000 feet. The number of adjustments that would need to be made to routes of other planes throughout the area overwhelmed the software.

The Pentagon confirmed Monday that an Air Force U-2 spy plane was conducting training operations in the area. It is not unusual for a U-2 to operate in the region, and the necessary flight plan had been submitted for the high-flying plane, Col. Steve Warren said.

'Club Kid Killer' Released From Prison

Michael Alig

An infamous former Manhattan party promoter, dubbed the 'Club Kid Killer' by tabloid newspapers for the 1996 death of a downtown partygoer, has been released from prison after serving 17 years, corrections officials said.

Michael Alig, 48, was a popular fixture in the '90s club scene in New York and gained notoriety for the killing of Andre "Angel" Melendez, whose body was chopped up and tossed into the Hudson River.

Alig and his friend Robert Riggs pleaded guilty to manslaughter in State Supreme Court in Manhattan in 1997. Alig was sentenced to ten to 20 years in prison.

Alig's infamy was revived in 2003 when he was portrayed by actor Macaulay Culkin in the biographical crime drama "Party Monster."

World's Only Captive Colony Shutting Down

Hyenas

Some of the wildlife at the University of California at Berkeley is about to disappear as the last members of the world's only captive hyena colony decamp to new homes due to a lack of funds, university officials said on Tuesday.

The last 13 animals in what had once been a group of 54 will be moved to U.S. zoos or sanctuaries from their current home in the hills above campus.

Hyenas in the colony were used as models for characters in the Disney movie "The Lion King."

The colony grew from cubs first brought from Kenya's Maasai Mara region in 1985. Scientists have studied their social structure and aggression, striking vocalizations and the females' unusual anatomy.

'Water Lilies' Fetches $27M

Claude Monet

A Claude Monet painting out of the public eye for decades sold Tuesday for just over $27 million, leading the bidding at an auction of art from the estates of heiress Huguette Clark, businessman Edgar Bronfman and other major collectors.

"Water Lilies," Monet's 1907 rendition of his beloved garden in Giverny, France, went to an undisclosed Asian buyer in the season-opening auction of impressionist and modern art at Christie's. The painting, part of Clark's collection since 1930, has not been publicly exhibited since 1926.

Christie's is selling hundreds of items from Clark's collection after a feud over her estate was settled in the fall. The Montana copper mining heiress died at 104 in 2011. Her father, U.S. Sen. William A. Clark, founded Las Vegas.

All told, Christie's sold 47 pieces Tuesday, raising more than $285 million.

In Memory

Cornelius Gurlitt

Cornelius Gurlitt's long-secret hoard of 1,280 major artworks set off an international uproar last year over the fate of art looted by the Nazis. Now his death has triggered a new round of speculation over who will eventually own his unparalleled collection.

A spokesman for the reclusive German collector, who died Tuesday at age 81 at his apartment in Munich, said Gurlitt had living relatives but he would not say who they are.

It was also not immediately clear whether Gurlitt had written a will or whether a Munich court would appoint a curator of estate, which is often done in Germany if there are open questions surrounding an inheritance.

Gurlitt had undergone major heart surgery recently and returned to his home in Munich, where he had hoarded his art for several decades. He was "in nursing care and taken care of in recent weeks around the clock," his spokesman Stephan Holzinger said as he announced the death.

Gurlitt was born in Hamburg in 1932. He came from a prominent German family of artists, composers and collectors, but little is known about his life beyond his position as the heir of his father's art collection.

When U.S. investigators questioned Hildebrand Gurlitt after the end of World War II about the origins of his collection, they were doubtful whether all the pieces really belonged to him. Eventually, however, they decided that he was the rightful owner of most of them.

After his father's 1956 death in a car accident, Cornelius Gurlitt lived together with his mother in Munich, a former famous dancer, until she died in 1968. He reportedly lived a reclusive life, making a living by selling paintings from time to time.
