To the longtime fan of mashups, there's no more proper spot to keep up with the scene than "Get Your Bootleg On". Formed from an early coalition of bootleggers as a way to keep up with each others' newest tracks, the forum continues to interest new listeners by encouraging posting of mashups, remixes, & original tracks. A highlight of GYBO (as many refer to it) is the regular announcement of themed bootleg challenges. From Rave to Dub, the GYBO challenge provides a fine focus for bootleggers looking for mixing motivation.
Now comes the newest GYBO challenge, "TV TIMES, the GYBO TV THEME TUNE CHALLENGE". All home producers are offered the chance to post any mashup made from a TV theme in a common area so that interested dudes can sample & compare & contrast. I admit I was immediately skeptical as to how successful a track could result from such a theme, but, the genius of it was apparent. Excelente aka John Irwin
offered up the fun instant classic "Benny Hilkshake" (Kelis vs Benny Hill Show 'theme') & established how inventive in a new way the concept works. Whether the track makes you smile, or frown, the realized creativity is apparent.
Bobby Martini was inspired to take the superb theme tune from the BBC1 series "Life On Mars", carefully place a few samples in, a little bit of Arman Van Helden, a few voice snippets etc. & come away with a cool tune that you will want as your ringtone. DJ MXR serves up New Order's 'Blue Monday' set against the theme from Desperate Housewives by Danny Elfman & you will be mighty pleased with the final sound. "The Fraggles Rock" from Martini does the unlikely up in a likeable arrangement by grafting The Fraggles theme vs 'Song 2' from Blur.
DJ Not-I seems to have a very popular track with 'Smells Like Futurama" (Nirvana vs Futurama 'theme'). It performs so perfectly, you'd think it started that way. I heard it on net radio already, as well as a few other tracks like Juxtaposeur's 'Ben Ten Theme Remix' & Freerange Meatraiser's 'Go GO Gadget Sirens' (Inspector Gadget 'theme' vs Dizzy Rascal) I was intrigued sufficiently by the challenge to try a couple of my own, so that explains my 'Bounce 2 Hardstyle Bubbles In The Wine' ( The Lawrence Welk Orchestra vs Dj Alligator vs Blutonium Boy) & Star Trek For Science (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Star Trek 'theme' vs They Might Be Giants). Thanks for the inspiration, GYBO.
There're 62 entries so far ranging from DJ AreDee's 'Darth Pinky and The Brain' (Star Wars & Pinky and The Brain) to Frogthedawg's 'Hello, I love Scooby Doo' (Doors vs Scooby Doo 'theme').So if you think this type of tune appeals to you, be sure & check your nearest search engine for 'TV TIMES, the GYBO TV THEME TUNE CHALLENGE' or register at
www.gybo.org & see the direct mixer posts. I'm confident you'll enjoy the experience.
Mix Of The Week - Too good to not be heard is Budtheweiser's new quartet of retro dance 'You Should Be Dancing Vol 1 to 4'. All four volumes saw release this last weekend & I can't quit playing them. Over 4 hours when you place them nose to toe, you'll be glad you heard them.

Mashup Tip: Always approach mashups with a 13-step interactive plan, or bypass that & mix hodge podge-style.

It was the mid-1980s, and in Kansas City, Mo., teenager Aaron Dontez Yates decided to move from straight-up beatboxing to writing his own rhymes. All he needed was a name. Not the one his auntie and mama gave him when he was born, but a real name, a name with weight that would give his rhymes that extra layer of respect they deserved.

All too often, funding is not available for school libraries. One student, Mitchell Nesheim, took action. To get books for his Mount Shasta (Calif.) High School Library, he wrote an article for local media in which he posted the names of authors whose books the library wanted and whose books were required or recommended for courses. He then asked the readers of the article to look on their bookshelves for books by those authors and to consider donating them to the school library. This is a great idea because all too many of us have books that we will never reread, but that other people would be happy to read.

Loved those old Westerns when I was a kid. My big brother was an usher (remember ushers?!) and could get me into the theater free. I saved twenty cents! There were two sizes of popcorn, 5 cents and 10 cents. There was always a double feature, cartoons, previews, and a serial on Saturday afternoon. Two of the local theaters had outdoor screens and seating for the warm summer months. This was in suburban St. Louis in the forties and early fifties.

Ooh, how subversive! Now, we all know ROY ROGERS, and we also know that
he had a horse (eventually, after it died, I think he had it stuffed).
But, what would a "girl" cowboy name her horse? Would she name him
Butch? Well, only if she was a switch-hitter. What about Rex? But this
is A'murka, and Rex means king. How about "Tony?" Only if he rings
twice (like the mailman).
Well, while the guys were always quick on the Trigger (hey, maybe she was
a switch-hitter if Roy really was that fast), the wimmin-folk were always
expected to churn the butter ... or perhaps she just bit the "Bullet" and
got off beastially.
Roy Rogers always seemed to be more of a "Park-Avenue" cowboy to me, you
know, Broke-back style.
Anyway, "B" is the answer.
MAM replied:
This one I just plain remember! It was Buttermilk!
Kevin in WLA responded:
Dale Evans horse was Buttermilk
And, Sally said:
Now you are talking about MY super-hero's from back in MY youthful TV days!
Buttermilk (B) was the name of Dale Evans' horse and one of my dearest memories was seeing both Dale and Buttermilk in person back in the day.
Okay, for starters, who didn't love Roy Rogers and the lovely Dale Evans? I saw them perform at Madison Square Garden (in NYC) a couple of times, read all of Dale's books, and of course, saw all of their movies. How I cried after reading, "Angel Unaware" about the life and death of their precious Down Syndrome daughter. They were the first "celebrities" to admit to, and proudly show off, a child with this affliction - and that alone, was astounding back then.
I bought their records, and later on, bought their movies on tape. Oh, and I too adopted a child from Korea because I was SO influenced by their adoptions, and lives, BTW.
In the 90s, I had the chance to see Dale performing in an intimate setting, in Denver, CO. At that time, she had aged quite a bit, her children were grown, and Roy had passed on. She was appearing in one of our beautiful churches in Denver, and although I knew that she had become quite "Christian" (which I am not) I couldn't care less. She was warm, and lively, smiled at everyone in the audience as she strolled the aisles - often reaching out to the people who held out their hands to her. What a beautiful, and genuine lady who is missed by all of her fans. Can't you just see her riding Buttermilk into the sunset, to an awaiting Roy, right now??
Thanks to Marianne & PURPLE GENE for the pictures of
Dale Evans & Buttermilk.

Nelson Mandela will come to London in June to celebrate his 90th birthday with a series of events attended by stars and politicians including Oprah Winfrey, Robert de Niro and Bill Clinton, organizers said on Tuesday.
"You all know that I am supposed to be retired but my friends and the charitable organizations that bear my name want to use my 90th birthday year to raise funds to continue our work and so of course I want to help them," Mandela said.
"So, we have a bargain -- I am going to London and they will host a concert in Hyde Park, which will raise awareness of our continuing work and much needed funds," he added in a statement.
A children's story about a family of penguins with two fathers once again tops the list of library books the public objects to the most.
"And Tango Makes Three," released in 2005 and co-written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, was the most "challenged" book in public schools and libraries for the second straight year, according to the American Library Association.
Other books on the ALA's top 10 list include Maya Angelou's memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," in which the author writes of being raped as a young girl; Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," long attacked for alleged racism; and Philip Pullman's "The Golden Compass," an anti-religious work in which a former nun says: "The Christian religion is a very powerful and convincing mistake."
Overall, the number of reported library challenges dropped from 546 in 2006 to 420 last year, well below the mid-1990s, when complaints topped 750. For every challenge listed, about four to five go unreported, the library association estimates.

A musical by John Mellencamp and Stephen King, scheduled to be produced next season in Atlanta, has been postponed, the Alliance Theatre announced Monday.
The Alliance announced in February that "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County," with music by Mellencamp and a book by horror master King, would open in April 2009, with the object of preparing it for a Broadway run.
The Alliance notified subscribers on Monday that the project has been delayed because of "unanticipated scheduling problems which could not be resolved in time for the production."
The Alliance said it now hopes to produce the show during its 2009-2010 season.

Hundreds of thousands of Canadian students broke out in song at the same time across the country on Monday during the fourth annual Music Monday.
The event, started by the Coalition for Music Education in Canada, aims to promote the importance of music education for children and to protect music programs in schools.
More than 650,000 students from 1,500 schools and communities from coast-to-coast sang in the afternoon event. Music teachers took their pupils into the community for the simultaneous concert to sing "Our Song," which was written by Canadian female music duo Dala.
The event began in 2005, focusing on students in schools, but has since grown to include community ensembles, choirs, orchestras and professional symphonies.
A lovesick former mental patient was convicted Tuesday of stalking and harassing Uma Thurman for more than two years, showing up on her front doorstep and movie set and sending the actress a series of creepy love letters.
Jack Jordan, a 37-year-old out-of-work lifeguard and pool cleaner, faces up to a year in jail. He was convicted of stalking and one count of aggravated harassment, and acquitted of two other harassment counts.
Jordan, who looked calm, was led from the courtroom in handcuffs. The judge ordered a psychiatric exam before his next court date on June 2.
Prosecutors say he had stalked the "Kill Bill" and "Pulp Fiction" star since 2005, when his crush on Thurman became so intense he said he had to be with her.

The owner of Tropicana casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, nearly five months after New Jersey regulators stripped the Tropicana Casino and Resort of its license.
Tropicana Entertainment LLC said Monday it plans to continue operating its remaining properties throughout the country, including the famed Tropicana Casino and Resort on the Las Vegas strip, and will keep current staffing levels.
The company was buffeted by a chain of events that began Dec. 12 when the New Jersey Casino Control Commission determined that the company was incapable of running the "first-class operation" required by state law and stripped the Tropicana in Atlantic City of its casino license after less than a year.
That touched off a funding crisis that the company desperately struggled to fend off until filing for protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, listing assets of $2.8 billion and liabilities of $3.3 billion.

NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co, plans to say next week that the entry price for a 2009 Super Bowl 30-second ad will be $3 million, the Wall Street Journal said on Tuesday.
The $3 million mark has never been the starting price for a commercial at the Super Bowl, though individual slots have sold for that much before, the report said.
Prices to buy a 30-second spot for the 2008 Super Bowl averaged $2.7 million, it was reported earlier.
A Grammy-nominated violinist who left his $4 million, 285-year-old Stradivarius in a taxi repaid the driver who returned it with a free concert at an airport taxi stand on Tuesday.
Philippe Quint, 34, left his 1723 Ex-Keisewetter violin in Mohammed Khalil's taxi when returning from Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey at 3 a.m. last week and Khalil later returned it without knowing its value, Quint said.
After frantically reporting the loss to the taxi commission, reviewing photos of licensed taxi drivers and informing police, Quint went back to the taxi stand hoping the driver would reappear.
Then he received a call from the Port Authority, which operates the airport, and was told Khalil had returned with the prize to the taxi stand, where they soon met up.
