A Mashup Battle For The Ages!
By DJ Useo
It all started so innocently. A lively online discussion on the merits of two bootleg fans' favourite mixers. Maybe too much coffee entered the picture, perhaps the fatigue of a long day, but the lol'ing & lmao-ing soon fell into a professional airing of the percieved merits of both bootlegger's tracks. You see, the former fan loved the remixes of
DIVIDE AND KREATE.
( www.divideandkreate.com/ ) & the latter fan was a devotee of the bootleg output of
CALMUCHO ( calmucho.com/ )
You'd think there would be room for disagreement, but NOOOOOOOOOO!
So the matter will be settled through direct dj battle with tracks at 5 paces. DJ Petrushka, a dj at
www.sound-unsound.com will air an hour special this Thursday at 8 pm gmt / 3 pm est where you will hear the musical exchange! Sworn to neutrality for the shows' duration, DJ Petrushka will present 5 of the former fan's picked tracks by Divide And Kreate & also 5 of the latter fans' selected cuts from Calmucho's catalogue. You'll hear tracks that rank among the highest of all bootlegs, according to 2 of the best playlist writers on the scene.
Divide And Kreate are the crafters of exceptional bastard pop tracks like 'Stereophlux' (Bloc Party vs Stereophonics),
'Tattooed' (Jordin Sparks vs The Caesars), 'Livin' La Vida' (Bon Jovi vs Coldplay) & Hole's 'Celebrity Skin' (Divide & Kreate remix). Videos are a regular & successful part of the Divide And Kreate experience, with much radio exposure such as
OUI FM
( www.ouifm.fr/ ) & XFM Scotland. I would be surprised to meet anyone with an aquaintance of mashups who knows not of the lure of a Divide And Kreate creation. I am always impressed & appreciative of their releases.
Calmucho is a male from London, is apparently an Aries, & has enjoyed splendid response to his new generation bootlegger approach. He boasts popular tracks like 'I Want You Back All Summer Long' (The Jackson 5 vs Kid Rock), 'Work It Out, Do You Love Me' (Beyonce vs The Contours) & 'Probably The Cheesiest Mashup In The World' (As'st). I find his mixing rewarding & memorable. You can also find videos on his site, & although he has not the widespread fame of D & K, where he is known, there is the clamour of praise! I made a point of getting all his mixes.
DJ Petrushka is pleased as punch to host the battle & is the self-proclaimed victor of the
DJ Fac
( djfac.wordpress.com/ ) vs
DJ Petrushka
( djpetrushka.multiply.com/ ) Mashup battle that occurred last year. She currently hosts
PAT THIS WEEK
( djpetrushka.multiply.com/journal/item/58/Pat_This_Week_Radio_Show_12 ) on Sound-Unsound Radio every Tuesday & also co-hosts Sound-Unsound This Week which features mainly new mashups from the SUS forum. I am confident she can maintain a position unbiased & allow you the listener to decide. Don't miss the show Thursday! That's tomorrow. I'll be there or my bookie will kill me!
Mashup Tip : Hold your mashups up to a mirror to check for ill-matched beats.

Even very good mothers have bad moments. Author Molly Magid Hoagland once read some old journal entries that her late mother had made. In one entry, her mother severely criticized herself because she had yelled at Molly, who was then 5 years old, so hard that Molly was terrified and used her hands to cover her ears. Her mother wrote, "I will never do that again." Fortunately, Molly, who is herself a mother now, says, "I don't remember that incident at all, nor any other episodes of scary yelling, and the fact that I don't is a great comfort to me in my worst moments as a mother."

'WOLVERINE'
Went and saw X-Men Origins Wolverineand all I can say is "Woh MOMMA !!!"...Hack and slash and snarl...hack some more, slash some more....
OK I CAN say more. I got to the theater early..too early, doors weren't open yet so I went in back of the awesome Century 16 cinemas and smoked some awesome local stink weed...I only smoke it for my Fibromyalgia mind you..yeahh!
Anyways , went around front again and doors were open, popcorn smell was pouring out and I was primed for some Hugh Jackman Ass Kicking action!!!...yup I'm a fan of the genre...sci-fi ,comics...WHAT EVAH! (Already got my Star Trek tickets thank you interwebs!)
Grabbed my Natchos-check (pre-packaged and not even warm yet) , my popcorn-check (actually Kettle Corn!!! Yahoo!),a bucket of CocaCola-check,box of SnowCaps-check, payed my $17.50 for the munchies-che...WHAT THE FUCK???? $17.50???????...anyways
Into the theatre...I love the stadium type seating...kinda hard to climb the stairs being all crippledly handycappednotcapable but worth it to get the center seat at eye level with the screen ... watched the previews...some good, some scary (Stiller and Sandler got new movies?AGHHHHH!!!) New Terminator looks cool, some kind of "Independence Day" clone...looks shitty, Pixar film about an old dude and his house flying ...dumb little kid...Looks Good ,STAR TREK...Looks AWESOME!!!!!
Lights dim....it's really dark!...I realize I still have my shades on and swap out for my regular goggles...phew!
The Movie starts out inprobably in a time long ago...but soon moves to the near present , along the way there is a great montage of blood ,gore, guts and Hun smashing! Wolverine and his brother "Victor" get messed up with some bad govmnt types, Wolverine says ..."Not fer me thanky!" and things slow down for some mushy lovey dovey crap...chicks ruin action films! "Ohhh I WOVE EWE!!!...I Wove Ewe TOOO!!!.".Kissy kissy smoochie smoochie...blech!
Only thing chicks are good for in action films is if they get killed and make the lead character all ragey and wanting to get revenge....but I wont spoil the movie and tell you that actually happens...it does and he goes on a KILL EM ! ROMPAGE (new word I just coined).....well, I'll leave it at that, other than to say that you will get to see a LOT of Marvel Comics X-men universe characters(Some Evil, Some Wicked, Some Good, Some Comic) and they deliver the goods. It has TONS of ass kicking action and not too many twists to drag you off the easy path of taking in all the SLASHING!
It brings us gently into the "modern" world of the X-Men.
A Must see for fans...stay till the credits are done! I usually wait till I see the Caterer's Name in the credits before leaving (gives time for people to get outa my way) but had a hunch I should hang around...and well I still had wood from all the action (ok I AM that weird!) and didnt want to show off the goods, good move to stay...after all the credits..you'll see!
Vic-soon to MAYBE not be in Alaska...really have NO idea where I'm going.
Thanks, Vic!

'Billy Elliot' Scores 15 Noms
2009 Tony Awards
"Billy Elliot," the tale of a British coal miner's son who dreams of becoming a dancer, has the potential of winning a record number of 2009 Tony Awards, honoring the best of a star-driven Broadway season.
Its 15 nominations - which Tuesday tied the number received by "The Producers" in 2001 - included one of the more unusual nods. The three boys who share the title role in "Billy Elliot" - David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, Kiril Kulish - were named together for the best actor-musical prize.
Other major multiple Tony nominees were "Next to Normal" with 11, and "Shrek The Musical" and the revival of "Hair," both tied with eight.
The large number of plays this season made some categories very competitive, particularly revivals. The four play revivals snagging spots were Alan Ayckbourn's comic trilogy "The Norman Conquests," the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of "Waiting for Godot," the historical drama "Mary Stuart" and August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," produced by Lincoln Center Theater.

Famed Bust A Fake?
Nefertiti
The bust of Queen Nefertiti housed in a Berlin museum and believed to be 3,400 years old in fact is a copy dating from 1912 that was made to test pigments used by the ancient Egyptians, according to Swiss art historian Henri Stierlin.
Stierlin, author of a dozen works on Egypt, the Middle East and ancient Islam, says in a just-released book that the bust currently in Berlin's Altes Museum was made on the orders of Germany archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt on site at the digs by an artist named Gerardt Marks.
The historian said the archaeologist had hoped to produce a new portrait of the queen wearing a necklace he knew she had owned and also carry out a colour test with ancient pigments found at the digs.
But on December 6, 1912, the copy was much admired as an original work by a German prince and the archaeologist "couldn't sum up the courage to ridicule" his guests, Stierlin said.
The historian, who has been working on the subject for 25 years, said he based his findings on several facts. "The bust has no left eye and was never crafted to have one. This is an insult for an ancient Egyptian who believed the statue was the person themself."

Remaining A Fugitive
Roman Polanski
Attorneys for Roman Polanski said in a court filing on Monday that the film director will not return to the United States from Europe this week to contest in person his 1978 conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Polanski would be arrested if he set foot on U.S. soil and his decision not to return ends his efforts to have his conviction dismissed, legal experts said.
In February, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza refused to consider Polanski's request to have the conviction dismissed as long as he remained a fugitive.
Polanski, 75, is the director of such films as "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown." He won an Oscar for directing the 2002 movie "The Pianist." He tried to have his 1978 guilty plea thrown out on claims that the judge in the case was improperly coached by a prosecutor.

Surrendering Sunday Nights To Affiliates
CW Network
The CW television network is shutting down on Sunday nights.
The network is negotiating to turn over the time to its affiliates. Viewers will see programming picked by their local stations instead of the reruns the CW is now airing.
Network spokesman Paul McGuire says this will enable the CW to concentrate on its stronger Monday through Friday schedule, and see its weekly ratings increase because a weak link is removed. The affiliates will have more time to sell their own advertising.

Renewed
'Fringe'
Fox is giving its weird-science drama, "Fringe," the benefit of a second-season renewal.
The network's announcement makes official what was already clear: "Fringe" premiered last September to become only one of a handful of new series to qualify as a hit.
J.J. Abrams is a co-creator and executive producer of the show. His other credits include the TV series "Lost" and "Alias." He is also the director of the much-awaited new "Star Trek" film.

2 Years To Start
'The Cleveland Show'
Fox is rewarding "The Cleveland Show" with a second season even before the first season has begun.
The spinoff from the network's hit animated series "Family Guy" is scheduled to premiere next fall.
But now Fox says its boosting the initial 22-episode order by another 13 half-hours, which would carry the show into the 2010-11 season.

Broke Rules
Miss California
The directors of the Miss California USA pageant are looking into whether title holder Carrie Prejean violated her contract by working with a national group opposed to gay marriage and by posing semi-nude when she was a teenage model.
Pageant spokesman Roger Neal said Tuesday that it appears Prejean has run afoul of several sections of the 12-page contract that all prospective contestants were required to sign before competing in the November state contest.
The detailed document prohibits the titular Miss California from making personal appearances, giving interviews or making commercials without permission from pageant officials. In the last 10 days, Prejean has made televised appearances at her San Diego church and on behalf of the National Organization for Marriage, a group opposed to same-sex marriage.
The contact also contains a clause asking participants to say whether they have conducted themselves "in accordance with the highest ethical and moral standards." As an example, it asks if they have ever been photographed nude or partially nude.

Descendants Demand Remains
Ned Kelly
Descendants of Australian outlaw Ned Kelly are demanding authorities hand over his remains so they can give him a "proper and decent" burial, a family representative said.
Archaeologists located remains they believe belong to the bushranger last year in a mass grave at the site of a former prison, and they are now with the Victoria state coroner while the government decides what to do with them.
Peter Norden, formerly a chaplain at Melbourne's Pentridge Prison where the remains were found, said descendants of the outlaw -- hanged in 1880 after an epic battle against the law -- want him to be buried with his relatives.
Kelly was hanged at the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1880, but documents show his remains and those of 32 other executed prisoners were exhumed and reburied at Pentridge Prison in 1929.

May Enter 19th Century
Swiss Guard
After more than five centuries protecting popes, the Swiss Guard may consider opening the ranks of the world's smallest army to women, its commander said Tuesday.
"I can imagine them for one role or another. Certainly we can think about this," Daniel Anrig, who took over the post late last year, told Italian television program "Studio Aperto."
Anrig's remarks could represent a major change in position regarding the future of the elite corps composed entirely of 19- to 30-year-old Catholic men hailing from the Swiss Army.
Anrig's predecessor argued that mixing the sexes could be more trouble than it was worth and cited cramped Vatican barracks as another reason for excluding women.

American Apparel
Woody Allen
Lawyers for film director Woody Allen asked a court on Monday to prevent American Apparel from calling his wife Soon-Yi Previn and his ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow as witnesses in an upcoming trial.
Allen sued the U.S. clothing company for trademark infringement more than a year ago seeking more than $10 million after his image was used on billboards in New York and Los Angeles without his consent.
In court papers filed Monday, Allen's lawyers said a possible witness list provided by American Apparel Inc. included Allen, Farrow, Previn, his sister Letty Aronson and Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt.
The possibility of calling such witnesses to the stand "all demonstrate the unmistakable intent to transform this trial into a spectacle," the court papers said. The trial is set to begin May 18.

Ed McMahon
Ed McMahon, the longtime sidekick to U.S. late-night television star Johnny Carson, has settled a malpractice claim he brought against a Los Angeles hospital after breaking his neck, a lawyer involved in the litigation said on Monday.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
McMahon, 86, sued Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in July 2008, claiming its doctors failed to diagnose his broken neck after a fall and discharged him without taking an X-ray. He also accused the hospital of botching two subsequent spine operations.
McMahon has a pending negligence claim against the owners of the home where he fell in March 2007, investor Robert Day and his wife.

What Class War?
Victoria Principal
Victoria Principal is embroiled in a legal fight with a former housekeeper that's worthy of a prime-time soap opera. It involves allegations of a gun, a sick dog and extortion.
Maribel Banegas claims she was fired by the former "Dallas" star on Dec. 26, but instead of paying her, the actress threatened to shoot her.
Principal, in a lawsuit filed Tuesday, states she pulled the gun only after Banegas injured her dog and was acting aggressively toward the actress and another worker. She claims Banegas repeatedly demanded money during an argument and refused to leave her home.
The dueling lawsuits will play out in Santa Monica, Calif. Neither woman's lawsuit lists an amount she is seeking.

Seeks $1 In Damages
Jeremy Don Kerr
A man sued the New Orleans Police Department, claiming he was harassed by an officer who threatened to arrest him for wearing a black pinstriped skirt to municipal court. Jeremy Don Kerr is asking for $1 in damages, a ruling that his rights were violated, and an order against barring access to public facilities because of gender stereotyping.
The department hasn't been served with the lawsuit and hasn't answered the claim in court.
Kerr filed the civil rights lawsuit last month. He said he finds skirts more comfortable than pants, and wears them with button-down oxfords or T-shirts.
And he said women love it.

Marilyn French
Marilyn French, the writer and feminist whose novel "The Women's Room" sold more than 20 million copies and transformed her into a leading figure in the women's movement, has died at 79.
She was an academic in 1977 when "The Women's Room," her first novel, was published. Her aim, she said, was "to change the entire social and economic structure of Western civilization, to make it a feminist world."
The landmark novel, which was translated into 20 languages, details the journey to independence of a 1950s housewife who gets divorced and goes to graduate school. The book mirrored aspects of French's own life experiences, including the rape of her daughter.
The male subjugation of women is the main theme of French's novels, essays, literary criticism and her four-volume, nonfictional "From Eve to Dawn: A History of Women."
A Brooklyn native, French graduated from Long Island's Hofstra University with a master's degree, studying philosophy and English literature. She taught there in the 1960s. After her divorce, she earned a doctorate from Harvard and was an English professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
A smoker, she survived a battle with esophageal cancer in 1992 that included a 10-day coma she described in "Season in Hell: A Memoir."
French is survived by her son, Robert French, of East Brunswick, N.J., and daughter Jamie French, of Cambridge, Mass.

Dom DeLuise
Dom DeLuise, the portly actor-comedian whose affable nature made him a popular character actor for decades with movie and TV audiences as well as directors and fellow actors, has died. He was 75.
The actor, who loved to cook and eat almost as much as he enjoyed acting, also carved out a formidable second career later in life as a chef of fine cuisine. He authored two cookbooks and would appear often on morning TV shows to whip up his favorite recipes.
Writer-director-actor Mel Brooks particularly admired DeLuise's talent for offbeat comedy and cast him in several of his films, including "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie," "History of the World Part I" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." DeLuise was also the voice of Pizza the Hutt in Brooks' "Star Wars" parody, "Spaceballs."
The actor also appeared frequently in films opposite his friend Burt Reynolds. Among them, "The End," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Smokey and the Bandit II," "The Cannonball Run" and "Cannonball Run II."
TV credits included appearances on such shows as "The Munsters," "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.," "Burke's Law," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and "Diagnosis Murder."
Because of his passion for food, the actor battled obesity throughout much of his life, his weight reaching as much as 325 pounds at one point. For years he resisted the efforts of family members and doctors who tried to put him on various diets. He finally agreed in 1993 when he needed hip replacement surgery and his doctor refused to perform it until he lost 100 pounds.
He was born Dominick DeLuise in New York City on Aug. 1, 1933, to Italian immigrants. His father, who spoke only Italian, was a garbage collector, and those humble beginnings stayed with him throughout his life.
DeLuise's introduction to acting came at age 8 when he played the title role of Peter Rabbit in a school play. He went on to graduate from New York City's famed School of Performing Arts in Manhattan.
While working in summer stock in Provincetown, Mass., he met a beautiful young actress, Carol Arthur, and they were soon married.
The couple's three sons, Peter, Michael and David, all became actors and all appeared with their father in the 1990s TV series "SeaQuestDSV," in which Peter and Michael were regulars. David was one of the co-stars of the hit children's series "Wizards of Waverly Place."
