M Is FOR MASHUP - May 5th, 2021
Institute Of Bootleggers On The Air
By DJ Useo
Here's the 23rd volume of the Institute Of Bootleggers mashup series with 16 new tracks by 16 home producers. It’s called “
Institute Of Bootleggers - On The Air”
( theinstituteofbootleggers.blogspot.com/2021/05/institute-of-bootleggers-on-air-mashup.html )
Beginning in 2009 as a promotional tool, the IOB comps are beloved by the mixers themselves, & the listeners who make up a clamoring audience.
The talented home producers featured may change through the years, but the quality never lessens. Normally, the tracks are provided by the bootleggers currently producing. Occasionally, there’s been a look back at the past mashup scene, but that’s the proven exception.
Everybody mixed what they liked on this collection, & to fine effect. Dom does The Doors vs the Capitols, mcclintockmashups does 3 Doors Down vs People's Choice, DJ CROSSABILITY does Sappheiros vs Bee Gees, & Instamatic does ABBA vs Fleetwood Mac. That’s just 4 out of 16 cool tracks.
If you have doubts, check out the preview track DRA'man’s “
Real Humpty Betty” ( Ram Jam vs Cypress Hill vs Digital Underground ) -
( sowndhaus.audio/track/21073/ram-jam-vs-cypress-hill-vs-digital-underground-real-humpty-betty )
As the person doing the album mastering, I end up with the albums as uncompressed wav files. Wow, do the wav versions sound better. I like to burn them to actual cd discs, & play them on my living room sound system, which is in surround sound. The already great tracks become stunning when they spread out in surround sound.
The series will absolutely continue, so look for more in a few months. Meanwhile, there’s a text file included in “ON THE AIR” zip file containing the links to all the previous volumes. Enjoy & share.

Anecdotes
Husbands and Wives
• Director William Wellman once allowed his wife to play a small role in one of his movies. She had seven words of dialogue to begin with, but in the editing room her part was cut down to only three words. After seeing the movie, his wife told him, “Bill, I’ve been married to you for 13 years, and do you know what I’ve gotten out of it? Five kids and three words of dialogue.”
• Tom Waits often collaborates with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. For example, they co-wrote the stage play and musical titled Frank’s Wild Years. Asked in an interview for Spin whether the two had worked together, or worked separately and sent stuff back and forth, Mr. Waits joked, “We sent stuff back and forth — like dishes, books, frying pans, vases.”
• Babe Didrikson’s husband, George Zaharias, fully supported her athletic endeavors. Whenever she was about to compete in an important tournament, he slept in a separate bedroom so his snoring wouldn’t bother her. Apparently, it helped — Babe won a record 17 golf tournaments in a row. (By the way, her husband’s nickname for her was “Romance.”)
• Tenor Richard Lewis danced in perfect rhythm, of course, but his steps when dancing a fox-trot or a waltz were his own original creation. A friend, Brenda Webb, once danced with him, then complained to his wife, Elizabeth, who laughed, adding that it had taken her years to get used to her husband’s dance steps.
• Eleanor Roosevelt was an extremely active first lady, flying around the country visiting schools, hospitals, government buildings, etc. One day, the first lady’s secretary told President Franklin Roosevelt that the first lady was in a prison. President Roosevelt joked, “I’m not surprised — but what for?”
• When Henry Koster, director of Harvey, married actress Peggy Moran, he asked her to give up acting but promised to include her in every movie he directed. How did he keep his promise yet keep his wife from acting? In each movie he directed, a certain piece of art — a bust of his wife — appears.
• Neither Dr. Seuss nor his wife liked to cook, and so they nearly always ate in restaurants. One day, his mother visited, and she was shocked when she opened the refrigerator door and discovered nothing inside except a cookbook that she had given the happy couple at their wedding.
• Some people look for love in the wrong places. Philosopher Richard Watson once knew a man who was looking for his perfect soulmate: a woman who was willing to sail around the world with him. Mr. Watson asked, “And you’re looking in St. Louis, Missouri?”
• One night, singer Nat King Cole’s wife woke him because he was snoring and joked, “Gosh, honey, we’re going to have to get twin beds.” He said immediately, “There’ll be no twin beds in here!” Mrs. Cole says, “I loved it when he said that.”
• Grant Wood, painter of American Gothic, was married briefly. Following a big quarrel, his wife left him. This didn’t seem to bother Mr. Wood much. After she left their house, he merely mowed the lawn and said, “I’m a free man again.”
• Shimon Apisdorf finds saying “I love you” to his wife is very easy, but he regards that as a problem. Such important words should not be said lightly; instead, they should be said with the deepest emotion.

BANDCAMP MUSIC
BRUCE'S RECOMMENDATION OF BANDCAMP MUSIC
Music: "Mod Monster Music"
Artist: Girl Over Planet
Info:
“It's spook house meets coffee house, as this hip mod melody will make you grab whoever, or whatever, is near and get down … maybe even six feet down!”
“Girl Over Planet is a foursome from Russia with great original surf tunes. They have a highly honed sound that sometimes wanders into the vibe of Los Straitjackets and Laika & Cosmonauts. Intelligent guitars and spacey keys create a more modern sound of surf music. The new album INTERGALACTIC COWBOYS & SOLAR WIND SURFERS was recently released on Moroz Records/Warner music, Russia.”
Price: $1 for track; this track is a one-sided single
Genre: Surf Instrumental

Woody Guthrie Prize
Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen has won the 2021 Woody Guthrie Prize, which is given to an artist seen as carrying on the spirit of the folk singer whose music focused on the plight of the poor and disenfranchised.
Guthrie, who grew up in Okemah, Oklahoma, was one of the most important figures in American folk music and penned hundreds of songs, including some that The Boss has performed over the years.
“Woody wrote some of the greatest songs about America’s struggle to live up its ideals in convincing fashion,” Springsteen said in a statement Tuesday. The New Jersey rocker called Guthrie, who died in 1967 at age 55, “one of my most important influences.”
Springsteen and previous prize recipient Pete Seeger performed Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” at Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential inauguration.
Joan Baez, Chuck D, John Mellencamp, Norman Lear, Kris Kristofferson and Mavis Staples are among the past recipients of the award.

Co-Chairs
2021 Met Gala
The organizers of New York’s famous Met Gala have chosen a slate of young and diverse celebrities as co-chairs in an apparent bid to attract a new generation to the otherwise exclusive social highlight of the fashion year in America.
This year’s gala will see poet Amanda Gorman, singer Billie Eilish, actor Timothée Chalamet and tennis star Naomi Osaka as co-chairs. Gorman (23) Eilish (19) Chalamet (26) and Osaka (23) are the youngest ever co-chairs and are part of US Vogue’s ongoing campaign to attract readers from Generation Z.
In 2019 Vogue announced the “Vogue Values” editorial mission statement, where 26 international Vogue editors announced they stood for the values of “diversity, responsibility and respect for individuals, communities and for our natural environment”.
However, these attempts to align themselves with Gen Z values of diversity and inclusivity come after a period of tumult for US Vogue, which has been edited by Anna Wintour since 1988.
In June, Wintour sent an internal memo to employees acknowledging that the magazine had: “Made mistakes … publishing images or stories that had been hurtful or intolerant.” She added that: “It can’t be easy being a black employee at Vogue and there are too few of you.”

Conan O'Brien
Late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien will host his long-running nightly TBS "Conan" talkshow for the last time on June 24, WarnerMedia said on Monday, ahead of his shift to a new show on HBO Max.
The final weeks of the TBS show will feature a line-up of special guests, culminating in an extended hour-long finale recapping his 11-year run.
"The plan is to re-emerge on HBO Max sometime in the near future with I think what will be my fourth iteration of a program," O'Brien said at the start of "Conan" on Monday.
WarnerMedia said O'Brien's HBO Max show would move away from a traditional talk show format.
Known for his clever comedy, often self-deprecating and awkward, O'Brien is the current longest serving nightly late-night talk show host in the United States, having started his career in 1993 when NBC tapped him to take over from David Letterman as host of the Late Night franchise. He has won four Emmy Awards and six Writers Guild Awards.

Selling Song Catalog
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are selling their song catalog to Hipgnosis Songs for upwards of $140 million, sources confirm to Variety, making them the latest heritage artist to benefit from the intellectual property gold rush that has seen Bob Dylan sell his songwriting catalog to Universal Music Publishing for more than $300 million and Stevie Nicks sell hers to Primary Wave for $100 million.
The band, which formed in 1982, has a solid catalog of hits including “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” “Dani California,” “Knock Me Down” and others, and drummer Chad Smith recently confirmed that the group has been working on a new album. The news was first teased by Music Business Worldwide and reported by Billboard; at the time of this article’s publication, it was unclear whether the deal had fully closed.
The Chili Peppers’ catalog was largely written by the band’s key members since 1989 —singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, who recently returned for his third stint with the group. As reported by Billboard, the catalog is administered by Moebetoblame Music, under the guidance of lawyer Eric Greenspan, managing partner of the law firm Myman, Greenspan, Fox, Rosenberg Mobasser, Younger & Light LLP. Sources say Greenspan shopped the deal for the band. It also reported that the group’s catalog generates $5 million to $6 million in net publishers’ share.
Reps for Hipgnosis and the band did not immediately respond to Variety‘s requests for comment; Greenspan could not be reached for comment.
Change is in the air for the group, which left Q Prime, its managers for more than 20 years, last fall, and recently confirmed that they have signed with Madonna/U2 manager Guy Oseary.

Comments Don’t Quiet Critics
CNN
CNN analyst Rick Santorum’s claim that he misspoke during a recent speech where he said there was “nothing here” when the United States was founded did little to diminish anger against him.
The National Congress of American Indians on Tuesday renewed calls for CNN to fire the former Pennsylvania senator. The group’s president, Fawn Sharp, called Santorum arrogant for comments made to Chris Cuomo on Monday night.
“I was optimistic he would own it, he would recognize it and he would apologize,” Sharp said, “but he did none of those things.”
When he spoke to the youth group, Santorum said immigrants created a nation based on the Judeo-Christian ethic from a blank slate.
“We birthed a nation from nothing,” he said. “Yes, there were Native Americans, but there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

Lab-Made Diamonds
Pandora
Pandora, the jewellery maker best know for its silver charm bracelets, will stop selling mined diamonds and focus on more affordable, sustainable, lab-grown gems, it said on Tuesday.
"Diamonds are not only forever, but for everyone," Pandora Chief Executive Alexander Lacik said as the Danish company launched a new collection of man-made stones.
Pandora, which made 85 million pieces of jewellery last year and sold 50,000 diamonds, said it aimed to "transform the market for diamond jewellery with affordable, sustainably created products".
The growing acceptance of man-made diamonds by millennials attracted to cheaper stones guaranteed not to have come from conflict zones has spurred firms such as De Beers to end its decades-old policy of shunning synthetic gems in its jewellery.
Prices of lab-grown diamonds have fallen over the past two years following the U-turn by De Beers in 2018 and are now up to 10 times cheaper than mined diamonds, according to a report by Bain & Company.

Farmer Moves Border Marker Accidentally
Belgium
A farmer in Belgium has accidentally moved a boundary marker between his country and France, thereby expanding Belgian territory by a few metres.
The man placed the stone, which has marked the border for more than 200 years, 2.29 metres into France after it got in the way of his tractor.
The slight boundary change was noticed several weeks ago by an amateur historian during a walk in the forest.
The farmer “also repositioned his fence on trees that belong to the wood of Bousignies”, according to Aurelie Welonek, the mayor of the French town Bousignies-sur-Roc.
The stone was first put there in 1819, before the 620-km (390-mile) border was officially established under the 1820 Treaty of Kortrijk.

Egg Hatches
California Condor
A California condor egg has hatched in Northern California’s wild, the newest member of Pinnacles National Park’s recovery program for the endangered species.
The egg hatched April 12 after two months of round-the-clock incubation by both parents who protected their fragile egg from the elements and potential predators, park rangers said in a social media post.
Their nest has a video camera installed to help with monitoring and videos shared by the National Park Service this week show one parent feeding the fluffy chick while the other stands guard by the entrance to their refuge.
Since 2003, park rangers at Pinnacles, a 26,000-acre park in rural San Benito County about 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of San Francisco, and Ventana Wildlife Society wildlife biologists have managed a release site at the park for captive-bred California condors.
The two parents have been a pair for about five years, and this is their third offspring. They are condors 589, which is managed by the park. The other parent — 569 — is managed by Ventana Wildlife Society.
