Seven Years Of SUMMER BOOTY!
By DJ Useo
Hey, y'all-
I'm working up the new SUMMER BOOTY 2014 collection. It's going GREAT! I'll be writing about it in June when Summer comes.
Meanwhile, please enjoy this article on last years' SUMMER BOOTY 2013 in the meantime. It's three discs of really awesome mashups. New article next week.
-DJ Konrad Useo
Last week, I gave y'all a taste of SUMMER BOOTY 2013 The Summer Mashup Album with the preview tracks from Voicedude, Mumdy, DJ Spider, and the video preview from Envision.
Now, you get the full treatment of three full discs, 54 new mashups, mixed by 27 bootleggers. It's a generous listen in this modern age of the single track attention span, ( I don't mean YOU of course ) so I think it'll take time for the audience to achieve a full acquaintance will all the material. Especially when the first major response I received was from someone who was so into Envision's video that she was replaying that one solely, and hadn't gotten to the rest yet. Lol.
For a project only out since June 21st, the Summer Solstice, the response has been very satisfying. Mostly around 300-500 downloads a day is going to really add up eventually. As mashup producers, we claim no copyright and charge no fee, so it's good to know there's people listening. The
annual SUMMER BOOTY project has routinely pulled in numbers in the high ten thousands. If you count that on your fingers, that's a lot of hands! If you think you'd enjoy hearing dj 's mashing tunes into tracks that feel like eternal Summer, this is the real deal. Have a gander at the full playlist to see the many chosen source fodder pairings, and also who mixed them, if that interests you.
This project has inspired many to express themselves with the Summer bootleg vibe. The creation thus continues with more Summer offshoots appearing.
Budtheweiser has mixed
2 thoroughly enjoyable long blends of the entire project! Totally zarjaz!

Stream them today for maximum Summer thrills.
Before I spare you more hype, allow me to mention that SUMMER BOOTY contributor Hahnstudios has birthed a fantastic video version of his thriller mix '
It's A Wonderful Reggae Night Life' ( SEEED vs Jimmy Cliff ) .
I'm enjoying it repeatedly, pausing only to type these very words you read. Word has reached me of more video versions coming, so I'll drop you the links as they appear. I hope you all have tons of fun with this new 2013 edition. I regard it as the musical version of a water theme park. Essential for Summer celebration. If you couldn't make it to Stonehenge to celebrate the seasons arrival, jamming to this collection is the next best thing!
( vimeo.com/68801164 )
The music mixed contains the best source artists like Daft Punk, Taylor Swift, Alice Cooper, Snow Patrol, Katy Perry, Seal, Muse, and so many more.
The bootleggers are are all accomplished home producers with a successful mashup career of their own. dJ BC, Solcofn, DJ Spider, Voicedude, Giobat, mARKYbOY, DJ MXR and the many more flocking on this release are all proven mashup commodities sure to leave you pleased. Once you hear what I've heard here, you'll want more. Thus, all the single tracks are tagged with the home sites of the mixers. Don't thank me, just tell your friends!

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just

Reunion Set For Worldwide Simulcast July 20th
Monty Python
It would be impossible for me to quantify the impact that Monty Python had on my world view and my sense of humor. I discovered them at the exact right moment for them to end up being formative for me, and the original series as well as their films are all burned into me on a genetic level by this point. It's not that I've seen all of it a number of times… I have quite literally internalized all things Python to the point where I can't imagine who I'd be if there was no Monty Python.
Even so, I didn't even consider trying to get a ticket to their upcoming reunion show because I figured it would be a losing battle, and why get worked up over something I'd never be able to actually do?
Sure enough, tickets sold out in about the time it took for people to log into the website to buy them, and they added more shows, and then those sold out, and it became pretty clear that people are positively rabid to see the remaining members of the troupe perform together again. Now, thanks to Picturehouse Entertainment, that final show is going to be simulcast to 1500 theaters around the world.
Python hasn't performed together live since 1980, and they're actually doing a full ten shows together this time. It's the final show on July 20th that will be simulcast around the world, and I'm excited to join other Python fans in a theater in Los Angeles so we can join other Python fans globally as we all celebrate one of the most significant comedy teams of all time.

NBC Honors In LA
Tom Brokaw
NBC's Tom Brokaw, about to be honored with his name atop the network's West Coast news center, says that cancer has slowed him but not stopped him from working.
NBC on Tuesday is dedicating its new broadcast facility in Universal City, Calif., as the "Brokaw News Center." It will host the West Coast operations of NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Telemundo and local Los Angeles news programs.
Since stepping down as "Nightly News" anchor in 2004, Brokaw has kept active as a commentator, filled in as "Meet the Press" moderator after Tim Russert died and has done several documentaries, many with an historical bent.
The author of "The Greatest Generation" is working on projects related to the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, and a story on Hollywood filmmakers in World War II. Brokaw said he and Rick Atkinson, author of a World War II trilogy, will give lectures on a boat ride from England that is set to land in Normandy, France, on the anniversary of D-Day in June. The veteran newsman said he finds the work therapeutic.

"Classically Cannabis: The High Note Series"
Colorado Symphony
The Colorado Symphony Orchestra said Tuesday it will play a series of "cannabis-friendly" fundraising concerts sponsored by the state's burgeoning pot industry.
The state's only full-time professional orchestra hopes the unusual shows dubbed "Classically Cannabis: The High Note Series" will boost its audience as it struggles with dwindling attendance and shrinking budgets.
"The cannabis industry obviously opens the door even further to a younger, more diverse audience," symphony CEO Jerome Kern told The Associated Press.
In return for sponsorship, marijuana-related companies get "the legitimacy of being associated with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra." he said.
The event, however, is strictly BYOC - bring your own cannabis, according to an events listing on the symphony website that says pot will not be sold.

Value Surpasses $50 Billion
ESPN
The National Football League announced last week that ESPN would host the first playoff game in its 35-year history in January 2015. The Wild Card playoff game is a carrot for the $15.2 billion ESPN committed over eight years in its latest NFL TV rights deal, which kicks off next season. ESPN's commitment to the NFL is worth almost twice as much annually as the pacts signed by NBC, Fox and CBS. An NFL playoff game marks the latest milestone for the network and further strengthens the stranglehold it has on sports programming.
The NFL is the engine that makes ESPN go with year-round programming dedicated to America's favorite sport, but the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader in Sports has built an empire on the back of valuable programming across all sports that dwarfs any other network. The result is a company worth $50.8 billion, according to Wunderlich Securities research analyst Matthew Harrigan, who did a valuation analysis last month of ESPN's parent Walt Disney based on discounted cash flows (the Mouse House bought ESPN as part of its purchase of Capital Cities/ABC in 1996; Disney's current market value is $137 billion). The Disney-owned ABC Network is a footnote compared to ESPN at a valuation of $3.2 billion, according to Wunderlich.
The only U.S. media companies trading at higher values than ESPN on Wall Street are Time Warner and Twenty-First Century Fox, and they are both conglomerates with a broad array of brands and assets (Comcast also fits the bill, but it is largely a cable distributor). The reality is there are not a lot of publicly traded companies worth more than ESPN's $51 billion valuation (80 U.S. companies as of last week across all sectors led by Exxon Mobil at $432 billion). ESPN is more valuable than Hewlett-Packard, Lowe's, Sprint and Twitter based on Wunderlich's estimate and the most valuable media brand in the world.
ESPN's value is derived from the massive cash flow the company generates, which is expected to reach $4.5 billion this year, up 39% from five years ago. For comparisons sake, CBS Corp., the highest rated broadcast network, had operating income of $1.6 billion last year.

Con Man's Church Fraud
Barry Minkow
A former pastor and notorious con man was sentenced to five years in federal prison Monday for stealing $3.5 million from his San Diego church and its members, a tale of betrayal that a judge said made the three-time felon one of the worst white-collar criminals.
Barry Minkow, 48, was ordered to do the time after completing a sentence for an unrelated scam that cost homebuilder Lennar Corp. some $580 million in lost stock value.
Minkow was a famous millionaire as a teenager in the 1980s for founding the ZZZZ Best carpet cleaning company, which became embroiled in a $100 million fraud. He went to prison, was released in 1995 and two years later became pastor of San Diego Community Bible Church.
Minkow "used every mechanism available to steal money" from the church from 2001 to 2011, taking more than $1.3 million in donation checks, forging signatures on checks and taking out unauthorized loans in the church's name, prosecutors said. The courtroom was full of current and former church members, some sharing emotional stories with the judge as Minkow stared ahead and turned his chair occasionally to whisper to his attorney.

Takes $57 Million Writedown on 'Mr. Peabody'
DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks Animation has taken a $57 million impairment charge against earnings due to the disappointing box office results for "Mr. Peabody and Sherman."
The company reported on Tuesday a first-quarter loss of $42.9 million, or 51 cents a share, on revenues of $147.2 million. DreamWorks Animation posted earnings of $5.6 million, or 7 cents a share, on revenues of $134.6 million during the 2013 first quarter.
"The box office shortfall of 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman' is evidence of the current challenges we face within our feature film segment, and restoring the strength in our core business is my number one priority today," said CEO Jeffrey "Sparky" Katzenberg.
DreamWorks announced the charge and earnings after the market closed. The loss was not a major surprise to analysts, and the stock slid 37 cents to $26 in after-hours trading.

Stripped Of Right To An Attorney
Joshua Nisbet
A robbery defendant is standing trial without a defense lawyer after a judge stripped him of the right to counsel, saying he was abusive toward his five previous court-appointed lawyers.
Joshua Nisbet, who maintains his innocence, gave a brief statement at the start of his trial Monday and frequently leaned over to consult a stand-by attorney as he questioned witnesses. He addressed the witnesses while seated behind a table with a fabric skirt to prevent jurors from seeing that he was wearing shackles.
A judge had stripped Nisbet of his right to a lawyer after he went through five court-appointed attorneys, all of whom asked to be taken off the case. The last two attorneys withdrew after Nisbet allegedly threatened to shoot one of them in the eye with a BB gun. Nisbet denied the accusation.
Nisbet, 36, of Scarborough, has been in Cumberland County Jail for nearly three years since he was charged with wielding a knife during a convenience store robbery in South Portland in July 2011.

Hundreds Sentenced To Death Are Innocent
US Inmates
As many as 300 people who were sentenced to death in the United States over a three-decade period were likely innocent, according to a study published in a leading science journal on Monday.
Dozens of defendants sentenced to death in recent years have been exonerated before their sentences could be carried out, but many more were probably falsely convicted, said University of Michigan professor Samuel Gross, the study's lead author.
In their research, Gross and his colleagues examined the 7,482 U.S. death sentence convictions between 1973 and 2004.
Gross and his co-authors, Barbara O'Brien of Michigan State University, Chen Hu of the American College of Radiology Clinical Research Center in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania's Edward H. Kennedy, estimated that about 4 percent of those sentenced to death were actually innocent, nearly three times the number exonerated during that period.
For their conclusion, the research group used a mathematical formula that included the number of inmates whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, the length of time it took for a convicted inmate on death row to be set free, and the number of inmates who were in the end exonerated.
