M Is FOR MASHUP - April 28th, 2010
Mashups That You Can See
By DJ Useo
There's a new movement in the mashup scene, video mashups! Of course, there's been lots of video mashups before, but there's a swell crop of new talent applying themselves to this area. I don't do them myself, but I have the software. As soon as I learn it you'll be seeing my own video mashups. Normally, I get sent around ten new mashups a day & generally at least 2 of them have videos. I'm not counting the many cuts posted on youtube with static art, I mean full-fledged flickering images lifted from many sources. There's enough mashup vids being posted that there're some proper channels for them. The must-not-miss channel is
BorisB's Mash TV. (
mashup-videos.webs.com/ ) It's the best bootleg channel you'll probably ever see. Why he hasn't been signed to host them on some music network is a tragic oversight. People don't like to make money anymore,do they? So, anyway, back to the vids.
To inform you of some great new mashup videos let's begin with BorisB's vid for the
Pilchard track 'Mud Puffin' (Brigitte Bardot vs The Go Team). (
borisbvideos.webs.com/apps/videos/videos/show/8306960-the-tony-crackburn-orchestra-mud-puffin
) I was already stunned over BorisB's last vid for the Kleptones 'This Song Smells' (Nirvana vs Blur), but this new vid has a great, retro mix for the music & a strong message that resonates for our present time. Watch the vid & see for yourself why mashup vids time is now!
DJ Le Clown (
djleclown.free.fr ) always does a fine video for his mashups. It's clearly part of his phenomenal success. Last month we thrilled to his '
Mami Catalan' (Meneo vs Meneo Live) (
vimeo.com/10430612, & he has not let up. Now comes 'Bumble Star Galactica' (Wilson Pickett vs Prince and Jazzy Jeff) a bootleg video tributing the fine sci-fi series Battle Star Galactica. The mix that composes the audio is splendid, & the video is a big joy to see. Don't take my word for it,tho',
here's the proof. (
http://vimeo.com/11187249 )
The Reborn Identity is still making new videos for the tracks from his astonishing new album, 'Britpop Rebooted'. His eventual goal is to have each track on the album seen as a video. The latest track to get such lavish treatment is '
The London Line' (Elastica vs Londonbeat) (
vimeo.com/10546908 ) RB certainly has a knack for attractive visuals in his vids. You'll be happy you watched. More Reborn Identity videos

I just discovered for myself the video-making talent of Lee Naven, with his video for
mARKYbOY's 'The Bad Boys Are Back In Town' (Thin Lizzy vs Alexander Burke). (
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YiqG8h6mTQ&feature=player_embedded ) I should have clicked earlier, but despite seeing Lee's Great vids for other mARKYbOY bootlegs like 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Babe' ( Lily Allen vs The Andrew Sisters) & 'Like A Supernova' (Madonna vs Mr. Hudson) I only just became a big fan of Lee's work. He's got an entire channel

Last week here in 'M Is For Mashup' I told you about
Dj Not-I's project 'Off The Beaten Meter' (
offthebeatenmeter.blogspot.com/ ), an entire album of odd-tempo mashups. Now, a week later the videos are appearing for the album. One that really pleased me is by Virtual DJ, a mashup producer of no little ability. Now he turns his talent to viewable mashups with his 'Watcher of Facades' (Philip Glass vs Genesis vs William S. Burroughs). The video contains altered snippets from 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shepperton Concert by Genesis, & The Music of Kurt Weill: September Songs by Larry Weinstein. Now that Virtual DJ has entered the video arena, I wager there'll be no turning back! See for yourself

I could go on & on, there's so many worthwhile mashup vids, but I realize your eyes might be tired, so I'll save them for later. You get the point anyway. :)
'72 mix 2' is a sequel to the group mix that rocked the bootleg world last year. It has numerous 3-minute sections by great mixers like Scott Cairo, CJR, DJ JP aka cg74, Totom, Nosbic, EternalKhaos, Pom Deter, GaraGara, Oki, Lee Spoons, Ian Fondue, Dylan Vasey, Lopez, Tizwarz, BKB aka CMP, Kai, Eddie Pedalo, DJ Useo, McSleazy, & Defunkto. It's very organic & among the best bootlegging you'll hear. Just about every major style is present in this one.
I ran this a few weeks ago before the link was available, but here it is now with the

Mashup Tip : Write your favourite label artists & ask them for some of their a capellas & instrumentals. Some of them might say okay.
DJ Useo latest thing - My new mashup '
Ozric Roses' (Stone Roses vs Ozric Tentacles) Just made the deadline for Get Your Bootleg On's Madchester challenge. I love the Roses track so much I could hardly bear to change it, so, aside from some major remastering, I mainly added loops of synth & guitar from Ozric Tentacles. I've been told it's entrancing. There is a pattern here. Believing in government, Democrats tend to appoint top-notch people to do the job - whether it's professionalizing FEMA, as Clinton did, only to see it sink back into Republican complacency (to run FEMA, Bush tapped the Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association) . . . or appointing a Nobel-prize winning physicist to head the Department of Energy (Bush's first appointee had, as a senator, voted to abolish the Department of Energy) . . . or, in this case, installing "the real deal" to head S.E.C. enforcement.

...aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist - but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact... He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on...

'Peanuts' Gang
Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling licensing rights for Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the "Peanuts" gang to Iconix Brand Group Inc., the licensing company that owns Joe Boxer and London Fog.
The family of the late "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz will also own part of the business too, giving it more control of and money from the comic strip's legacy.
Heirs say the deal announced Tuesday for for the 60-year-old comic strip is what the artist would have wanted. Schulz worked for decades to win back the rights to his work, which many other artists like himself sold to appear in print.
Scripps will sell its licensing unit, which also represents characters such as Dilbert and Raggedy Ann and Andy, to Iconix for $175 million. The bulk of revenue generated by United Media Licensing comes from the "Peanuts" franchise.

Heads To Arizona
Shakira
Colombian-born pop star Shakira will meet with the mayor of Phoenix this week to help campaign against a new Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration, a member of the mayor's staff said on Tuesday.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will speak with Mayor Phil Gordon, a strong critic of the new law, and other city officials on Thursday afternoon, a spokesman for the mayor said.
Shakira, best known for her hit singles "Hips Don't Lie" and "Whenever, Wherever," was also expected to meet with families who could be affected by the Arizona law.
Representatives for the singer declined to comment on her visit to Arizona. The newly enacted immigration statute there has come under fire from Hispanic groups, organized labor and civil liberties activists who charge the measure is unconstitutional and will lead to ethnic profiling.

`60 Minutes' Interview
Conan
Conan O'Brien will be on TV this weekend with his first post-"Tonight Show" interview.
O'Brien talks with Steve Kroft on "60 Minutes," CBS said Tuesday. O'Brien's exit deal with NBC barred him from television appearances until May 1; the "60 Minutes" piece will air the day after.
The interview was conducted last week in Los Angeles, according to a person with knowledge of it. The person, who lacked authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.

With Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and other celebrities appealing for donations, the Chinese-language entertainment industry raised nearly $4.8 million for victims of the recent earthquake in China's west after a five-hour charity concert in Hong Kong.
A spokeswoman for the concert, Bonnie Wong, said the biggest individual donation on Monday came from Hong Kong media mogul Run Run Shaw, who chipped in 10 million Hong Kong dollars ($1.3 million).
Other stars performing or attending Monday evening included Hong Kong singers Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, Leon Lai and Joey Yung.

Roddenberry Auction
`Star Trek'
Shoppers can boldly go where no man has gone before when "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's collection of personal effects and show memorabilia go up for auction.
Hand-annotated scripts, costumes from the show and Roddenberry's own studio pass are among the items available at the June 27 auction at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, administered by Julien's Auctions.
Proceeds will benefit the Roddenberry Foundation, which makes grants to support children, education and the environment.
The original Capt. Kirk, William Shatner, is also getting in on the auction, selling his custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle, his Golden Globe nomination certificate and the plaque he was presented when he got a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1983. Shatner plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Hollywood Charity Horse Show, which helps handicapped children.

"Fragments"
Marilyn Monroe
Musings about life, literature and other rarely seen writings by Marilyn Monroe will be published this fall.
Farrar, Straus & Giroux announced Tuesday that "Fragments" would come out in October. Editor Courtney Hodell said the book would include poems, photographs, reflections on third husband Arthur Miller and other men in Monroe's life, and references to works by Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and numerous other authors.
The writings date from 1943, when Monroe was a teenager, to near the end of her life. Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home in 1962 at age 36, her death ruled a probable suicide, although theories of murder have proliferated.
The book was commissioned by Anna Strasberg, who manages Monroe's estate and is Lee Strasberg's widow.

TNT Renews
"Southland"
In a surprising move, TNT has renewed the former NBC cop drama "Southland" for a third season.
The network has ordered 10 episodes of the critically acclaimed show, which will air starting next January. "Southland" has been a modest performer for the cable network, which picked up the series after NBC canceled the series right before the start of its second season.
TNT said "Southland" gains about 50 percent more viewers via DVR time-shifting, which is above average. In live-plus-same-day ratings, the final episodes of the show averaged about 2.2 million viewers. The show averaged 2.7 million viewers for the season once seven-day DVR gains were added.

Hospital News
Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse was taken to a London clinic after suffering minor injuries from a fall at her home on the weekend, her spokesman said on Tuesday.
"It was just a domestic accident and not serious. She bruised her ribs and had a cut above an eye," he said.
The 26-year-old Grammy-winning artist, who shot to fame with her second album "Back to Black," is reported to have returned recently to the studio with music producer Mark Ronson, recording several tracks for a tribute to Quincy Jones.

Hospital News
Bret Michaels
Rock singer and reality television star Bret Michaels remains hospitalized in intensive care after a brain hemorrhage, but his condition has improved to stable from critical, his publicist said on Tuesday.
Michaels, 47, the front man of rock band Poison and a contestant on the current season of "The Celebrity Apprentice", had been in critical condition since being rushed to a hospital last Friday. Doctors diagnosed a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding at the base of his brain stem.
The singer's publicist said Michaels was still undergoing tests but was now in stable condition. He was described on Sunday as suffering from slurred speech and blurred vision.
Michaels' father Wally Sychak told celebrity news site Extra on Tuesday that he had spoken with his son in an Arizona hospital by phone. "He sounded a little slow, but fine. He was talking, not as cheerful as he usually is. But I guess he is under sedation," Extra quoted Sychak as saying.

TV Habits Divide Prisoners
Guantanamo
While the Obama administration sorts out which Guantanamo prisoners to hold as terrorism suspects and which to repatriate or resettle, the captives have sorted themselves out by entertainment preferences, camp officials said on Tuesday.
"TV is a defining mark," said Army Lieutenant Colonel Andrew McManus, deputy commander of detention operations. "The camps have arranged themselves along TV watchers and non-TV watchers."
Journalists visiting the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base for hearings in the war crimes tribunal of Canadian captive Omar Khadr were offered a tightly controlled visit to some of the detention camps on Tuesday, after Khadr's hearing was delayed until Wednesday to give lawyers more time to prepare.
In the last few years, the military has tried to encourage good behavior by granting privileges to those who obey camp rules. About 80 percent now live in two communal camps where they can eat together, attend classes, socialize and watch television in small groups during daytime hours, McManus said.

Worker Sentenced
UCLA
A former UCLA School of Medicine researcher has been sentenced to four months in federal prison after reading the confidential medical files of celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Hanks.
Huping Zhou also was fined $2,000 at his sentencing Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in January to four misdemeanor counts of privacy violations.
Prosecutors claimed that before and after his 2003 firing, Zhou accessed private records of celebrities and co-workers more than 300 times.
Authorities say Zhou didn't try to sell the information. His attorney Edward Robinson says the Chinese immigrant didn't know it was a federal crime.

Wins Injunction
Jackson Estate
Michael Jackson's estate has won a preliminary injunction against a group using the name of the superstar's former charitable group.
U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee on Monday ordered the current Heal the World Foundation to stop using Jackson's likeness and any trademarks that belong to his estate.
Jackson's estate sued the owners of the foundation last year, claiming copyright infringement. They also claimed the site was improperly using Jackson's name and likeness to solicit donations.
Gee's ruling said the new website, which has its references to Jackson, misled consumers.

Michael Wayne Carr pleaded guilty Monday to three of 12 counts that included grand theft and forgery.
Under terms of a plea deal, the 44-year-old San Joaquin County man faces as much as seven years in prison and will be ordered to pay restitution when he's sentenced Nov. 1. Carr will be ordered to pay back $956,000 to Sutherland and one of the actor's investing partners.
He initially faced up to 18 years behind bars.

Fox Rupert For "Chipmunks" ProfitsBagdasarian Family
The family that owns rights to Alvin and the Chipmunks has sued 20th Century Fox, claiming it is owed "half of all profits" from last year's megahit "The Squeakquel."
In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Bagdasarian Prods. and writer Janice Karman claim that Fox took substantial portions of a screenplay prepared for the sequel by Karman, wife of the late creator's son, Ross Bagdasarian Jr., and has refused to account for "substantial copyrighted contributions" used "without authorization."
The suit also alleges that Fox separately has breached an agreement over promotional tie-ins to the Chipmunk characters.
The plaintiffs demand that the court declare Karman to be a co-owner of the "Squeakquel" script, "thereby entitling her to half of all profits attributable to 'The Squeakquel's' screenplay." They want Fox to account for profits.

No Hard Feelings
Donny Deutsch
A week after being tossed off the air by MSNBC, Donny Deutsch was back at NBC headquarters - just not on television.
The well-known advertising executive, who was supposed to fill in last week during MSNBC's 4 p.m. ET hour, had angered people at the cable network with a series about anger.
Last Tuesday's segment of "America the Angry" talked about how tough political talk on radio and TV riles viewers. Much of it featured Fox News Channel, but a clip of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann was included. Conservative radio personality Hugh Hewitt was interviewed, calling Olbermann and MSNBC's Ed Schultz "the biggest hate-mongers on television."
MSNBC management didn't appreciate hearing on-air criticism of the channel's personalities, and Deutsch was told not to bother coming in for the rest of the week.

Jason Alexander
Los Angeles police say "Seinfeld" actor Jason Alexander struck a 14-year-old bicyclist while driving, but the boy wasn't seriously injured.
Police spokeswoman Norma Eisenman says Alexander hit the biker Tuesday along Wilshire Boulevard in the Mid-City area.
Eisenman says Alexander stopped and waited for police and wasn't cited.
She says the boy suffered minor injuries and was in stable condition when he was taken to a hospital for examination.

Calls Berlusconi 'Daddy'
Noemi Letizia
The aspiring model who calls Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi "Daddy" on Tuesday marks a year since he attended her 18th birthday party, prompting his wife to file for divorce.
But Noemi Letizia -- who became a household name in Italy as part of a cast of mainly female characters in a months-long spate of scandals over the premier's private life -- says a phone call will suffice this year.
"I expect at least a phone call. For me it's the minimum," she told the ANSA news agency, before quickly adding: "And the maximum."
Letizia bristled when asked whether she still called Berlusconi "Daddy," ANSA said. "Why would I change? What kind of question is that?" she said, adding that her parents were still in touch with the prime minister and they would always remain friends.

Police Wanted To Protect
Loch Ness Monster
Scottish police in the 1930s believed the existence of the Loch Ness monster was "beyond doubt" and even sought to protect it from hunters.
A letter released by the National Archives of Scotland from Inverness County Police Chief Constable William Fraser in August 1938 shows police believed the only step they could usefully take to protect "Nessie" from hunters was to tell people that the monster's preservation was "desirable."
Fraser went on to say that a certain Peter Kent and Miss Marion Stirling of London were determined to catch the monster and that Kent had told local police he was having a special harpoon gun made to hunt the monster down.
Fraser said he had had Kent warned of the desirability of having the creature left alone.
