M Is FOR MASHUP - April 16th, 2014
Mashups A La April
By DJ Useo
There's tons of great new mashups every day. Way more than can be absorbed by one person. Here's a few of the posts that displayed vast memorability.
1-DmR of AtoZ has, in just the past couple weeks, released 2 spiffy & nifty new mashes that are simply not getting the attention they deserve .
These are certainly cruising tunes, ideal for soaring down an open-road, day or night . . and even approximating that same feel from the comfort of your own digital hammock or bean-bag lounger!
First up is "Whip-Back (( Music That You Can Follow ))" --Devo & The Beatles vs Sparks--
( www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuR9lGy5ZCM&list=UUhOykyBWh8iex1G_4sMHSSw )
A spiff-nifty video to be sure, but it's always about the audio, fore & firstmost .
Next he presents us with "Gumboot Scrap" ( The Beatles vs Nick Lowe )
( youtube.com/watch?v=TVtzqfk0UBQ )
AtoZ sez: "Forgive my unfettered enthusiasm, but I feel like this one is my 'hit single'. . or sure should be ! ".
Both
links also contain downloads for the audio. I advise both.
2-The Fabulous Beatmatchers are popular, working deejays who mash constantly. They take top 40 tracks, and spruce them up into instant classics. Recent FabBeat mashups include "Happy Tequila" ( Pharrel Williams vs The Champs ), "Hey Jubel Now" ( Martin Solveig vs Klingade ), and "Hey Brother Scream When The Night Never Comes And Love M Again" ( Avicii vs Usher vs John Newman vs Linkin Park ).
You can hear all their tracks here

and if you are a Facebook member, you can "like" their page, and get download links here
( www.facebook.com/FabulousBeatmashers/app_220150904689418 )
3-DJ Rudec is coming on really strong with many new works. He's clearly capable of handling any style with much élan. You can observe that for yourself by listening to "One Note Salmon" ( Stan Getz & Tom Jobin vs The Chemical Brothers ), "Possessed 1999" ( Prince vs L.A.X. ), " and Independent Painkiller Sound" ( Ne-Yo vs The Doors vs Imagine Dragons vs DJ Fresh ) .

4-Now, a reminder that Party Ben
( www.partyben.com/ ) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the start of The Sixx Mixx, his LIVE 105 radio show which ran from June 27, 2003 to Dec. 30, 2005. He's remastering the original files and
posting them here as 320kbps mp3s, along with tracklistings and some additional commentary and context
( www.partyben.com/sixxmixx/ )
You'll be hard-pressed to find better bootlegs in a long mix.
5-Generik brings on wonderful new tracks like other people breathe. Never heard a less than killer mix from him. Some recent Generik mixes are "Empire Heart Of Gold" ( Neil Young vs Jay-Z ), "The Gifted Girl" ( Royksopp vs N.A.S.A. ), and "Bad Touch With Me" ( Cashmere Cat vs Bloodhound Gang ). You'll find many more on
his page. All incredibly appealing.
( soundcloud.com/generikmashups/ )
Believe me, I could go on and on regarding fine mashups. That'll do for now, though.
I need the time to hunt down the new album from Mashup-Germany.
Mix Of The Week
Warvadal's "Imaginary Becomes Ordinary" is a full disc's worth of tunes from movies. That is, it's great tunes from great movies, and mixed by a great. Check the playlist! Stream, or d/l here-

Charlie Pierce's Blog
Hi Marty,
I check out your page every day. I use the internet as my morning paper (quit subscribing to the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch 12 years ago because they insisted on endorsing Republicans no matter what). After checking top stories and my e-mail, Bartcop was my first stop and then you. I really miss him. A friend turned me on to him when I first had internet access back around '97 or '98 and I've seldom missed an issue. I made a donation for his wife when I first heard. Wish I could have done more.
At any rate, Charlie Pierce's Blog on Esquire is worth checking out every day for lots of political updates. He's a frequent guest on Wait,Wait Don't Tell Me and It's Only a Game on NPR. He's one of those writers who can cut to the gist with a few (usually acerbic) words. In addition, he has
Colonel Robert Bateman as a guest contributor. Colonel Bateman used to post on Altercation many years ago. He has a unique perspective.

BartCop
Hello Bartcop fans,
As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to
active@bartcop.com.
So - to let you know what's going on, the guestbook on bartcop.com is
still open for those who want to write something in memory of Bart.
I did an interview on Netroots Radio about Bart's passing
( www.stitcher.com/s?eid=32893545 )
The most active open discussion is on Bart's Facebook page.

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just
over 600 but like to get it up to at least 10,000 pretty quick. So
here's the signup link for this email list.

Taking Extended Leave
Lawrence O'Donnell
Cable news commentator Lawrence O'Donnell is taking a leave of several weeks from his job as host of the MSNBC program "The Last Word" to recuperate from injuries he suffered in a taxi accident while vacationing abroad, the network said on Monday.
O'Donnell, 62, and his brother, Michael, were both injured while out of the country on Saturday and have since been brought back to the United States for medical treatment, MSNBC said in a statement.
The statement said both men were "under the care of doctors and expected to make a full recovery" -- Lawrence O'Donnell in New York City, his brother in Boston -- but the network gave no details of their condition.
The statement also did not clarify whether the two men were in a taxi that crashed or were struck by a taxi, nor did it say where they were vacationing when the mishap occurred.

Made A Dame
Angela Lansbury
Angela Lansbury has today been bestowed with the honour of being made a dame by Queen Elizabeth in a special ceremony. The 88 year-old actress, who had previously been known as Angela Lansbury CBE, will now be known as a Dames Commander of the Order of the British Empire after having received the very special honour at Windsor Castle in recognition of her accomplishments and contributions.
Dame Angela was joined by her son, his wife and her niece as she collected the award for her services to drama as well as charitable work and philanthropy. "It is a very proud day for me to be recognised by the country of my birth, and to meet the Queen under these circumstances is a rare and lovely occasion," she commented, via Sky News.
The London-born, US-raised star now joins a select group of acting Dames, including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Penelope Keith. At the same ceremony today, Veteran entertainer Nicholas Parsons was also honoured with a CBE for his lifelong work for children's charities and Sculptor Antony Gormley received a knighthood from the Queen.

China Classic Film Thought Lost
"The Cave of the Silken Web"
Norway will hand to China a copy of "The Cave of the Silken Web", a classic Chinese film that had long thought to be lost, the National Library of Norway said Monday.
The delivery of the silent film from 1927 is expected to arrive in Beijing on Tuesday.
Diplomatic relations between both countries have been tense since Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded in 2010 the Nobel Peace Prize, decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
After deciding to go through its stock of around 9,000 old films in 2011, the National Library of Norway found a nitrocellulose copy of "Pan si dong" -- its original Chinese title. It was the first film from the Asian country to be screened in the Scandinavian kingdom.
It seems to be the only existing copy.

Steam Locomotive Coming Back To Life
Big Boy
In its prime, a massive steam locomotive known as Big Boy No. 4014 was a moving eruption of smoke and vapor, a 6,300-horsepower brute dragging heavy freight trains over the mountains of Wyoming and Utah.
It's been silent for half a century, pushed aside by more efficient diesels, but now it's coming back to life. The Union Pacific Railroad is embarking on a yearslong restoration project that will put No. 4014 back to work pulling special excursion trains.
The American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady, N.Y., built 25 of the monsters to Union Pacific's specifications between 1941 and 1944, and they became legendary. They were the largest steam locomotives ever to work the rugged terrain of the American West, and by most standards the largest anywhere in the world, said Gordon McCulloh, a meticulous historian of Union Pacific steam power.
Big Boys are 132 feet long, including the tender, which carried coal and water. They weigh 1.2 million pounds with a full load of fuel. They are essentially two engines under one boiler, with two sets of eight drive wheels, each set powered by two enormous cylinders nearly 2 feet across.

Mom To Pay $800,000
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson's 83-year-old mother Katherine has agreed to pay over $800,000 to tour promoters AEG Live for costs incurred to defend a failed lawsuit she brought, lawyers said.
Attorneys for AEG Live, which organized the pop icon's doomed 2009 comeback tour, had sought more than $1.2 million for expenses after winning a five-month trial but haggled out a lesser amount with Jackson's legal team.
The deal has still to be approved by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos, who oversaw the civil trial last year.
The Jackson matriarch sued AEG Live in 2010 claiming they negligently hired and supervised Conrad Murray, the doctor subsequently convicted of involuntary manslaughter over the "Thriller" singer's death on June 25, 2009.

Replaced By Recording
'War Horse'
Musicians who performed in the London production of "War Horse" have lost a legal bid to stop the National Theatre from replacing them with a recorded soundtrack.
The five performers, laid off last month, asked the High Court for an injunction so they could keep their jobs pending a legal challenge.
Judge Ross Cranston refused Tuesday, saying reinstating the musicians would cause "not insignificant practical difficulty" for the company. But he said the five had a strong case to argue for breach of contract.
The story of a horse serving during World War I is one of the National Theatre's most successful shows, with productions running in Britain, the United States and Germany. Steven Spielberg directed a film adaptation.

Private Tax Collectors
IRS
A public employees union is fighting a bipartisan effort in Congress to force the Internal Revenue Service to hire private contractors to collect some delinquent taxes.
The IRS stopped using private tax collectors in 2009 after determining that agency employees could do a better job.
The Senate Finance Committee passed a bill two weeks ago that included an amendment requiring the IRS to revive the program. The amendment was offered by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. It was accepted without opposition.
The IRS first started using private collectors in 2006 after resident George W. Bush signed a law authorizing them. Over a two-year period, private contractors collected $86.2 million in delinquent taxes, according to a 2013 report by the National Taxpayer Advocate, an independent watchdog within the IRS.
The caseload was then turned over to IRS employees, who were able to collect $139 million over a two-year period, even though the cases were older and the easiest ones had already been resolved by private contractors, the report said.

Silicon Valley Screwing
Tech Workers
Witnesses at an upcoming trial over no-hire agreements in Silicon Valley should not be allowed to offer evidence that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was "a bully," four major tech companies argued in a court filing.
Tech workers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple Inc, Google Inc, Intel Inc and Adobe Systems Inc in 2011, alleging they conspired to avoid competing for each other's employees in order to avert a salary war. Trial is scheduled to begin at the end of May on behalf of roughly 60,000 workers in the class, and defendants say damages could exceed $9 billion.
The case, which is closely watched in Silicon Valley, is largely built on emails among top executives, including late Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
For instance, after a Google recruiter solicited an Apple employee, Schmidt told Jobs that the recruiter would be fired, court documents show. Jobs then forwarded Schmidt's note to a top Apple human resources executive with a smiley face.
In a joint court filing late last week, the companies told U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California that they were not seeking to bar Jobs' interactions with other witnesses about the no-hire agreements. However, opinions based on other evidence, like Walter Isaacson's bestselling biography about Jobs, should be kept out of trial.

Bans Cultivation Of GM Maize
France
France's lower house of parliament adopted a law on Tuesday prohibiting the cultivation of any variety of genetically modified maize, saying it posed a risk to the environment.
France adopted a decree last month to halt the planting of Monsanto's insect-resistant MON810 maize, the only GM crop allowed for cultivation in the European Union.
The law also applies to any strain adopted at EU level in future, including another GM variety, Pioneer 1507 developed jointly by DuPont and Dow Chemical, which could be approved by the EU executive later this year after 19 out of 28 member states failed to gather enough votes to block it.
The Socialist government, like its conservative predecessor, has opposed the growing of GM crops because of public suspicion and widespread protests by environmentalists.

Elusive Particles Confirmed
'Exotic Hadron'
The existence of exotic hadrons - a type of matter that doesn't fit within the traditional model of particle physics - has now been confirmed, scientists say.
Hadrons are subatomic particles made up of quarks and antiquarks (which have the same mass as their quark counterparts, but opposite charge), which interact via the "strong force" that binds protons together inside the nuclei of atoms.
Researchers working on the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) collaboration at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland - where the elusive Higgs boson particle was discovered in 2012 - announced today (April 14) they had confirmed the existence of a new type of hadron, with an unprecedented degree of statistical certainty.
The Standard Model of particle physics allows for two kinds of hadrons. "Baryons" (such as protons) are made up of three quarks, and "mesons" are made up of a quark- antiquark pair. But since the Standard Model was developed, physicists have predicted the existence of other types of hadrons composed of different combinations of quarks and antiquarks, which could arise from the decay of mesons.
