Andrew Tobias: The Most Qualified President Ever
Consider this Timeline: …
March 9th - "This blindsided the world."
March 17th - "I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."
Justin Davidson: The Leader of the Free World Gives a Speech, and She Nails It (NY Mag)
Angela Merkel doesn't do drama and she doesn't give speeches on TV. So the mere fact that the German chancellor faced the camera across a desk and spoke to the nation Wednesday evening made the gravity of the situation clear. "Es ist ernst," she said-"This is serious"- and those three bland words had more power than a hellfire sermon. [On his blog, Andrew Tobias writes, "Remember when America led the Free World? The American Century ended exactly on time, January 20, 2017, 100 years after we entered World War I."]
Peter Wade: Trump to U.S. Postal Service: Drop Dead (Rolling Stone)
USPS workers are risking their lives during the coronavirus crisis, delivering essentials like prescriptions and food to people in need. And it delivers to remote areas across the country where private delivery services may not reach, making it a lifeline for many. According to the report, 500 postal workers have tested positive for COVID-19 and nineteen have died. If the country can afford the billions sent to the private sector in the relief aid package, saving a service that many Americans rely on seems like something that should be a no-brainer.
Republican Strategist Denounces the Party's Response to COVID-19 | Amanpour and Company (YouTube; 16 minutes)
Republican strategist Stuart Stevens is known for advising key GOP campaigns like Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential bid. Now he has written a powerful mea culpa for the Washington Post, laying the blame for what he regards as President Trump's failed response to the coronavirus pandemic squarely at the feet of all Republicans. Michel speaks with Stevens about all this and about his new book, "It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump." Originally aired on March 31, 2020.
The Beatles staged their fourth concert tour of America in August 1966, and it was the last commercial tour they undertook. Lasting a total of 19 performances, with 17 shows in American venues and two in Canada, it was plagued with backlash regarding the controversy of John Lennon's remark about the Beatles being "more popular than Jesus", death threats, and the band's own dissatisfaction with the noise levels and their ability to perform live. Although it was a commercial success, ticket sales had declined since the group's previous visit, in August 1965. Late in the tour, the band returned to Shea Stadium in New York, where they performed to an audience of 45,000, compared with the 56,000 world record attendance they had achieved the previous year. After the 1966 tour, they would become a studio band and focused exclusively on record production.
The Beatles' final paid concert of their career took place on 29 August at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California. The band played to an audience of 25,000, leaving 7,000 tickets unsold. A local company called Tempo Productions was in charge of the arrangements. Due to the reduced ticket sales and the expense of paying the Beatles their prearranged $50,000 performance fee, in addition to having to hire an orchestra to satisfy the local musicians union, the concert resulted in a loss for the company. At 9:27 pm, the Beatles finally took the stage and proceeded to play eleven songs: "Rock And Roll Music", "She's A Woman", "If I Needed Someone", "Day Tripper", "Baby's In Black", "I Feel Fine", "Yesterday", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Nowhere Man", "Paperback Writer" and "Long Tall Sally".

San Francisco. Before The Beatles got a recording contract they were a live band that thrilled their audience in clubs, but after Beatlemania, they weren't satisfied with their sound, didn't like arguing about rehearsals, and were legitimately concerned about security- especially after the furor over the John Lennon interview about The Beatles being bigger than Jesus Christ. According to band members they didn't rule out touring in the future but personal friction made a tour more unlikely as the band lurched toward their break up. Besides, they certainly didn't need the money with all the record sales.

• During the early 20th century, dancer Anna Pavlova toured in Texas. There, her music director, Theodore Stier, found some of the dirtiest theaters it was his misfortune to conduct in. In one Texas dressing room, he discovered an empty ink bottle. One year later, he returned to the same theater and the same dressing room, and he discovered the same empty ink bottle. For the next two years, he returned to the same dressing room - each year, he found the same empty ink bottle.
• Opera singer Leo Slezak did not like to share train compartments with strangers. He carried a sign saying "RESERVIERT" when he traveled by train and displayed it on the door after staking his claim on a compartment. Whenever the train was especially crowded, he used another sign: "HOSPITAL COMPARTMENT." With the use of the signs (and a few bribes to the train employees), he was able to travel in privacy.
• Las Vegas hasn't always been famous. Bill Bailey, the brother of Pearl Bailey, once had a job in Las Vegas, but he failed to show up for opening night. While driving there, he had come to two signs in the road. One sign pointed to Las Vegas, Nevada; the other sign pointed to Las Vegas, New Mexico. Unfortunately, Mr. Bailey took the wrong road.
• After a worldwide tour in which she spent 150 days at sea and visited Australia, the United States, and the Orient, Emma Calvé experienced eye trouble and went to see a doctor. He told her, "What do you expect? Of course your eyes are tired! You have seen more in the last few months than I have seen in all my seventy years!"

War
• During World War I, Thomas Beecham wanted to conduct some operas by the German composer Richard Wagner; however, an English patriot who ran a newspaper felt that playing German music when England was at war with Germany was unpatriotic and so he demanded that Mr. Beecham either not conduct Wagnerian opera or face the wrath of the press. Fortunately, Mr. Beecham knew that the patriot had some very fine German paintings, and he offered not to conduct Wagner provided the patriot burn his German paintings in public. When Mr. Beecham made his proposal to the patriot, the patriot was silent for a time, and then smiled and said, "It is rather silly, isn't it?" Mr. Beecham was thereafter left to conduct Wagner in peace.
• During World War II, while she was still very young, Maria Callas sang in front of an audience that included a German soldier from the army then occupying Greece. The German soldier was entranced by Maria's singing, and exclaimed to a woman sitting next to him, "What an artist! What a singer! That girl will be famous!" The woman then revealed that she was Evangelia Callas, Maria's mother, and the German soldier kissed her. She cried out, "Don't do that! You are the enemy!" The German soldier laughed, and then gave her another kiss, saying, "I can be enemy to no woman with a daughter like yours, Madam. I shall never forget you or her."

Amy Schumer is not afraid to admit that she's changed her mind.
The Trainwreck star mentioned Tuesday on her podcast Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith that she's altered her baby boy's name.
Schumer and her husband, Chris Fischer, introduced little Gene Attell - "Attell" in honor of their friend Dave Attell - shortly after his birth on May 5, 2019. Attell called the baby taking his name "an honor."
"Do you guys know that Gene, our baby's name is officially changed?" Schumer said on her podcast. "It's now Gene David Fischer. It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we, by accident, named our son 'Genital.'"
With movie theaters shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic, Santa Monica-based Lionsgate announced Monday that the studio is teaming with Fandango and YouTube to live-stream four of its most popular library titles for free on consecutive Fridays at 6 p.m.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis will host "Lionsgate Live! A Night at the Movies," which begins Friday with "The Hunger Games," on Lionsgate's YouTube page and Fandango's Movieclips YouTube page, to be followed by "Dirty Dancing" on April 24, "La La Land" on May 1 and "John Wick" on May 8.
Curtis will be joined by guest celebrities and YouTube personalities, according to Lionsgate. Each week's program will also feature interactive opportunities for viewers, like real-time fan chats via YouTube Live, live tweeting @Lionsgate, and movie trivia and movie-themed challenges.
According to a statement released by the studio, undisclosed donations by Lionsgate and its partners will benefit the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, an organization that aids workers throughout the film industry. The foundation is currently providing financial assistance to theater employees furloughed by the COVID-19 crisis.

As most businesses in Florida have been ordered shut to help fight the spread of the coronavirus, the state has deemed World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) -- a company with past and present links to President Donald Trump (R-Shill) -- "essential," permitting the pro-wrestling company to continue live TV broadcasts from its Orlando training facility.
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said at a press conference on Monday that despite Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis giving a statewide "shelter-in-place" order on April 3, the company was given the go ahead to resume operations amid the pandemic after speaking with the governor's office.
Initially, WWE was not designated as an essential business which meant the company would have to comply with the governor's shelter-in-place order, Demings said. However, after the company, led by chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, had "some conversation" with DeSantis' office, the company was granted the distinction, according to Demings.
Like DeSantis, WWE has close links to Trump, even inducting him into their Hall of Fame in 2013. Former WWE president and CEO Linda McMahon, the wife of current chairman of the company, served the president as administrator of the Small Business Administration from 2017 to 2019 and now is chairwoman of America First Action, the sole sanctioned pro-Trump super PAC.
"This is an entirely new and astonishing situation," Charles Tiefer, a law professor at the University of Baltimore who has been teaching government procurement law for 25 years, said. "No one has ever seen a president vocally attack one of the bidders in a procurement. So no one has ever seen anything remotely like the bidder attacked by the president - losing."
Tiefer is referring to the situation that spawned the sensational lawsuit Amazon filed last November, challenging the Pentagon's awarding of the $10 billion JEDI cloud contract to Microsoft (MSFT). It alleges that President Donald Trump (R-Grifter)'s oft-expressed, seething animus for Amazon and Jeff Bezos, its founder and CEO, caused Pentagon officials, "consciously or subconsciously," to award the contract to Microsoft.
The judge will decide shortly whether to grant the Defense Department's request, filed last month, to freeze the suit for four months. The department wants a chance to correct an apparent error the judge found in its rationale for selecting Microsoft - a choice that had stunned many observers when announced last October.
Amazon's Amazon Web Services unit had long been considered the front-runner in the contest, because it pioneered the commercial cloud industry; still commands more than twice the market share of its nearest competitor, Microsoft Azure; and is the only vendor already authorized to operate at a "secret" or "top secret" level, having provided cloud services for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) since 2013.
Cannes Film Festival finally has admitted that its 2020 edition, which had been moved from May to late June, won't happen then either and is unlikely to go ahead "in its original form" due to the coronavirus outbreak.
But that's not the end of the matter. Organizers said today they still hope to salvage something from the rubble of the pandemic and stage an event at some point this year.
The move to nix the festival in its existing format became almost inevitable following a ruling by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday night that the country wouldn't host any festivals or events with large gatherings until at least mid-July.
The Cannes Film Festival has been the last holdout among major industry events in France, as the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival were scratched. Both normally take place in June.
Neanderthals were making string and cords from fibres long before early humans cottoned on to the technique, according to a new archaeological discovery.
Researchers have found a 6.2 millimetre (0.24 inch) fibre fragment which they date to around 41,000-52,000 years ago - so quite a bit older than the previous record holder, a 19,000-year-old fragment found in Israel.
The discovery was made in a cave in France, which would've been a Neanderthal settlement at the time. It suggests the species were smarter and more adept at crafts than we often give them credit for.
"Understanding and use of twisted fibres implies the use of complex multi-component technology as well as a mathematical understanding of pairs, sets, and numbers," write the researchers in their published paper.
"Added to recent evidence of birch bark tar, art, and shell beads, the idea that Neanderthals were cognitively inferior to modern humans is becoming increasingly untenable."
