ADVANCED MASHUPS 101 : Soul Like Khan Collection
By Professor Useo
Greets & well come, students of mashup lore. We all gather today to indulge in a detailed glimpse of the new MASHSTIX compilation '
Soul Khan - Soul Like Khan: Starve the Ego, Feed the Soul'
The album mashes the entire premiere album from
SOUL KHAN
( www.soulkhan.com/ ) & is a fine choice for good mashing. If you would please boot up your mixing programs, we can begin. Those of you viewing this over the web are encouraged to call your servers now & complain of the insufficient bitrate to stream without stalling. Oh, & you also fail the course.
The MASHSTIX
( mashstix.com/ ) mashup forum &
FRAIL LIMB PURITY
( fraillimbpurity.wordpress.com/ ) in their new bootleg release 'Soul Khan - Soul Like Khan: Starve the Ego, Feed the Soul' have done the necessary pyramid of planning necessary to result in a 'hit' mashup compilation. They 1-found excellent mixers motivated sufficiently to make the tracks, 2-added a fine theme with the new album from SOUL KHAN,& 3-managed the difficult task of locating sponsors, Dirty Belly Button Clothing , Mashstix.com & The Brown Bag Allstars.
When a record produced with these three essential elements is crafted, it is not even necessary for it to be 'good' to be popular, as in the case of the CENSORED album by CENSORED. Fortunately in the case we're studying today, the musical results are more than satisfactory. I spoke to the professor of Bootlegging at CENSORED University about this new MASHSTIX record & he said 'it evokes a good response, as if the music adds something to our mortal existense'. I merely sipped my White Zinfandel & reminded myself to listen again more closely.
Now, the moment we've all awaited. The actual music. I trust you've all got it downloaded? All except Jenson, of course! Jenson, you fail! Now, lets start with the first track & I'll guide you through with brief comments. These comments will be 33 1/3 of your final grade.
1. 6:30 a.m. (Rhythm Scholar Remix)
This track is clearly sick, to employ the vernacular. Please note the finestkind production sound.
2. Fe La Soul (Dunproofin's Sub Remix)
Dunproofin has fulfilled the full bootleg promise here with his deep, rich, fidget synth. The high quality of the SOUL KHAN is enhanced well.
3. James Brown's Knuckles [Mash Up by dj BC]
DJ BC brings a furthering of the hip hop history to an already ill track. Ain't nothing wrong with that, aaaay?
4. Deep Place [Mash Up by DJ Lobsterdust]
Chilled & all the better for it, Lobsterdust puts the proper spin on to please to extremes.
5. For That (Eddie Pedalo Remix)
Note the full bass here. An important portion in any mashup recipe, from Art Of Noise to Dangermouse.
6. One in the Hand [Mash Up by DJ Bahler]
This track shows how great scratching can combine with gentle guitar to bring it on home.
7. Shitted On (Garagara's Tape Found Down the Back of the Couch Mix)
This is dubby goodness for it's own sake. The vocals benefit from the separation. Try it on your next track.
8. Suckin' On Chrome [Mash Up by Dj Schmolli]
Human League-enhanced beats play to best results through the skills of DJ Schmolli. Profanity is evident, & often will sell a track all by itself, & so is encouraged, mM*th*rf*ck*r!!
9. Fahrenheit / Ruthless [Mash Up by Angels & Filth]
Angels & Filth have a good hand with edgier sounds & that works well with this piece. It will play perfectly, even at the highest volume.(See my notes from last weeks' lecture, 'Earplugs & You')
10. So Says I Feed Me [Mash Up by Biglerism]
Nasty electro can bring out the natural rhythms of a pella as is shown so effectively here. Also, the lovely female voice is a fine juxtaposition for the manly hip hop vocals of SOUL KHAN, or the artist of your choice. I enjoy some Pitbull, myself.
11. Sierra Leone Magnified [Mash Up by Bonus Mosh]
Bonus Mosh takes a mellow tack, in a bid to deceive, & then slams it home HARD! Your audience will welcome this technique.
12. Moby Minyan [Mash Up by G3rst]
Rock & Hip Hop are a perfect match since rock is derived from the Blues,a strong element of which is retained in the Hip Hop.
13. Soul Like Khan: Starve the Ego, Feed the Soul [Mash Up by Frail Limb Purity]
This track is so seductive & fulfilling, you will be almost done with it before you realize how fine it is. Try this type of speaking track while keeping it that appealing. Not so easy as you would think.
BONUS TRACKS:
1. Undeniable / Animus Vox [Mash Up by Frail Limb Purity]
2. Uglyface (Fruntroom Remix)
3. Fe La Soul (Dunproofin's Sub Remix) [Instrumental]
4. All I Want Is What I Do [Mash Up by Marc Johnce]
5. Ugly Coat of Arms [Mash Up by Bonus Mosh]
6. 6:30 a.m. (Rhythm Scholar Remix) [Instrumental]
The bonus tracks may be reviewed by you for extra credit. Except Jenson, I failed him. Quit crying, Jenson. You can still mash in the unemployment line.
Also, if you leave comments at youtube for the video versions of any of the tracks, I won't make you come to my house on weekends & wash my car any more.
(At this point Professor Useo ranted randomly for about 45 minutes, until he required coffee & called the class to an end by throwing his shoe at a student he kept calling 'Bush' all semester long.)

Horse dreams dashed, German teen turns to cow
LAUFEN, Germany: When Regina Mayer's parents dashed her hopes of getting a horse, the resourceful 15-year-old didn't sit in her room and sulk. Instead, she turned to a cow called Luna to make her riding dreams come true.
Hours of training, and tons of treats, cajoling and caresses later, the results are impressive: not only do the two regularly go on long rides through the southern German countryside, they do jumps over a makeshift hurdle of beer crates and painted logs...
Horse dreams dashed, German teen turns to cow - Arab News
This reminds me of a story my Mom (The Old Nan) tells of when she was a little girl growing up on the farm. One of her 'chores' at the end of the day was to walk down to the pasture their small herd of dairy cows grazed and bring them back to the barn for the night. The 'grand dame' of the herd was named 'Old Pet' and she knew when she saw my Mom it was time to 'go home' and would start back leading the others. 'Old Pet' allowed my Mom to ride on her back as they all slowly ambled back to the barn... I guess you could say that The Old Nan was a 'Cowgirl', as it were!

Guitar Sculpture Dedicated
Kurt Cobain
A sculpted guitar memorial to Kurt Cobain has been unveiled in a park in the Nirvana frontman's Washington state hometown.
The dedication in Aberdeen on Tuesday marked the 17th anniversary of Cobain's suicide in Seattle. A diverse group of fans and Aberdeen residents, many born after Cobain's 1994 death, attended the ceremony.
The sculpture was placed in a park near the Young Street bridge where Cobain spent time while growing up. The bridge attracts Cobain fans because it's mentioned in his song "Something in the Way."
Besides the concrete guitar, there's a steel ribbon dangling in the air with lyrics from the Nirvana song "On a Plain" that say: "One more special message to go and then I'm done and I can go home."

Dresses To Be Auctioned In Canada
Princess Diana
The blue silk velvet dress Princess Diana wore at a 1985 White House dinner and famously danced in with actor John Travolta will be offered for sale along with other gowns, a Canadian auction house said Tuesday.
Waddington's auction house has scheduled a sale June 23 for 14 gowns selected or commissioned by the Princess of Wales between 1985 and 1994 from British designers Catherine Walker, Bruce Oldfield and Zandra Rhodes.
Florida entrepreneur Maureen Rorech Dunkel reportedly paid $700,000 in 1997 for the silk, satin, velvet and embroidered formal dinner and evening dresses at an auction to raise money for Diana's humanitarian causes.
The collection includes dresses worn by Diana in 1985 at a gala performance of Les Miserables, during a visit to India in 1992 and at a banquet for Malaysia's king and queen in 1993.

New Operas
ROH2
Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Monty Python star Terry Jones are the unlikely pair in a new operatic double bill which opens in London on Friday.
Copeland has set Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic horror story "The Tell-Tale Heart" to music and Jones provided the libretto for "The Doctor's Tale," a story about a successful doctor who is struck from the register just because he is a dog.
His words have been set to music by Anne Dudley, a member of the band Art of Noise and an Oscar winner for her score for the British comedy film "The Full Monty."
The trio has been commissioned to create the new works by ROH2, the Royal Opera House's contemporary arm, and the run opens this week in the company's smaller Linbury Studio Theater. Ticket prices range from 9.70 to 20.40 pounds ($16-33).

To Film In Pittsburgh
'Dark Knight'
Criminals beware, Batman will be on the beat this summer in Pittsburgh.
Film director Christopher Nolan, who has helmed the two previous Batman films - starring Christian Bale as caped crime fighter and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne - said Tuesday the Pennsylvania city will host filming for a third film for at least a month.
"Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. We have been able to find everything we were looking for here and I am excited to spend the summer in Pittsburgh with our final installment of Batman," he said in a statement, adding that he finally settled on the city because of its architecture and diverse sampling of locations.
Mayor Luke Ravensthahl said the decision was "another example of the growing film industry in our community and we will be rolling out the red carpet for them."

"Earned" $262K
Bristol Palin
Tax documents show unwed mother Bristol Palin (R-Opportunist) earned more than $262,000 for her role in helping raise awareness for teen pregnancy prevention in 2009.
The most recent data for The Candie's Foundation that's posted online by research firm GuideStar shows compensation at $262,500 for the now-20-year-old daughter of former half-term Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Quitter), the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee.
Bristol Palin (R-Sock Puppet) was 18 when she was appointed as a teen ambassador for the New York-based foundation in 2009, months after giving birth to son, Tripp. She and the 2-year-old boy's father, Levi Johnston, are no longer together.
"I don't think anyone realizes how difficult it really is until you actually have a screaming baby in your nanny's arms and you're up all night," Palin said.

Facing 2 Misdemeanors In Vegas
Vince Neil
Less than six weeks after being released from jail on a drunken driving charge, Motley Crue singer Vince Neil is facing two new misdemeanor charges in a Las Vegas casino showroom confrontation with an ex-girlfriend.
Neil, 50, is accused of poking his finger into the chest of Alicia Jacobs in a casino comedy club late March 24, and of cursing and pointing or poking at Jacobs and her friends, John Katsilometes and Patricia McCrone.
Neil's lawyer, David Chesnoff, said Neil intends to plead not guilty and fight the battery domestic violence and disorderly conduct charges. He's due May 2 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
Jacobs, 39, a Las Vegas entertainment television reporter, showed police a bruise that she said came from the finger-poke.

Artist's Detention Tests Depth Of Crackdown
Ai Weiwei
China's detention of renowned artist Ai Weiwei has sparked an online petition urging his release as the nation's liberal intellectuals expressed concern about how far a crackdown to stifle dissent could reach.
Chinese officials have not commented on the whereabouts of Ai, who was stopped on Sunday from boarding a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong and taken away by border police. There was little doubt he has joined a lengthening list of dissidents and activists in detention or informal custody.
His wife, Lu Qing, told Reuters that police officers would not give her any information, and this detention appeared more serious than his recent run-ins with the government.
The disappearance of Ai, a burly, bearded 53-year-old avant-garde artist and designer who had a hand in designing the Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has drawn condemnation from Western governments.

Moves To Trademark 22 Catchphrases
Charlie Sheen
Not everyone may have Charlie Sheen's "Adonis DNA" but people may soon be able to wear it, drink it and experience it in a videogame.
A company with ties to the actor has moved to trademark 22 of Sheen's catchphrases, including "Duh, Winning," "Vatican Assassin," "Tiger Blood" and "Rock Star From Mars."
Much like their creator, the applications aim high, with trademark protection sought for everything from bras, drinks, electronic games, candy and even gambling machines.
Records show the company, Hyro-gliff, filed trademark applications between March 19 and 22.

Record 40 Pct Loss Over Arctic
Ozone Layer
The protective ozone layer in the Arctic that keeps out the sun's most damaging rays - ultraviolet radiation - has thinned about 40 percent this winter, a record drop, the U.N. weather agency said Tuesday.
The Arctic's damaged stratospheric ozone layer isn't the best known "ozone hole" - that would be Antarctica's, which forms when sunlight returns in spring there each year. But the Arctic's situation is due to similar causes: ozone-munching compounds in air pollutants that are chemically trigged by a combination of extremely cold temperatures and sunlight.
The losses this winter in the Arctic's fragile ozone atmospheric layer strongly exceeded the previous seasonal loss of about 30 percent, the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization in Geneva said.
It blamed the combination of very cold temperatures in the stratosphere, the second major layer of the Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and ozone-eating CFCs from aerosol sprays and refrigeration.
"This is pretty sudden and unusual," said Bryan Johnson, an atmospheric chemist who works in the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado.

"True Grit" Eye-Patch At Auction
John Wayne
John Wayne's iconic eye-patch from his 1969 film "True Grit" and the Golden Globe award he won for playing drunken U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn in the movie are to be sold at auction, Heritage Auctions said on Tuesday,
Billed as the first ever single-owner auction from John Wayne's personal archive, the sale will take place in Los Angeles from October 3-6. It also includes items such as the actor's cowboy boots and hats, driver's license, passport and American Express card, and movie scripts annotated with Wayne's handwriting.
Ethan Wayne, one of the actor's sons and president of the family-owned John Wayne Enterprises, said that after his father died in 1979, the family never looked through Wayne's personal items that were packed in storage until recently.
Ethan Wayne said he thought his father would approve of the auction because fans were just as important to the Oscar- winning American icon as his own family.
