M Is FOR MASHUP - April 3rd, 2013
Five New Mashups
By DJ Useo
I maintain the proposal that if you sat all day every day at your computer, you could NOT NO WAY NO HOW keep up with the new mashups.
The wonderful mixes out there will make you WISH you could hear all the great new tracks posting nearly every minute. Maybe it's just that I know where to hang out to find the best mixers, but the new tracks I do hear are almost always excellent. An experienced deejay or home producer has honed their sense of fine music so well, they can spot and craft a killer mashup, sometimes in less than an hour. Now, I haven't planned this in advance, I'm going to do this live as I type. I'm going to review the first 5 five new mashups I see.
01-Not too much of a surprise to me is the first new one one I see is from Sjoersje,a prolific and accomplished masher. His track is called 'Summer Love Is Comin'' (Pet Shop Boys vs Musikk vs John Rock). I'll give it a close listen now...
Well, the music is the Pet Shop Boys and the singing is the rest. The track is incredibly appealing with excellent production sound. I wager most people would never know it was a mashup unless they knew the source artists.
I think this mix is memorable and rewarding. This is why mashups thrive.
( soundcloud.com/sjoersje/sjoersje-summer-love-is-comin )
02-Next up is Rock Mashups with the mashup 'Mamma Mia Bullshit' (Abba vs Notorious BIG vs Newlacska). Now this is a nice bit of genre clash. While it's clearly a bootleg mix, it works very well together and I'm enjoying the ride. Good balance of production, it's good to hear a Hip Hop acapella to rock music.
Try it here

03-Hooray! This next one is from a favorite masher of mine named Fissunix. It's called 'Happy To Love It' (C2C vs Icona Pop). It's a very lively mix with cool female vocals over a unique blend of jazzy pop. The production is perfect. The appeal is irresistible. Fissunix has a huge gift of infallibility of mix.

04-I believe this next mashup is from Jonsving & Nordh, although it also says 'IC & Nordh'. The title is 'You're Gonna Die Young' (Kesha feat. Nervo) . I've been hearing some really fine mixes from these buds, & this one is fantastic right away. Solid modern dance music with poppy vocals, I am jamming to it just fine. It betrays no trace of being a non-label release. I think I'd be shocked if I heard a less-than-super track from them.
( soundcloud.com/jonsvingnordh/kesha-vs-nervo-vs-swoon-youre )
05-Now we get to DJ Sonjam. Again, I've just been getting familiar with his tracks, but I really like what I've heard, so the expectations are high for him here. Titled 'As Your Friendly Guap' (Big Sean vs Afrojack) this gem starts off strong with hot Hip Hop vocals over club whomping. It has a big smile on my face immediately. Quite a splendid mix, the vocals are distinct, yet not overwhelming. This one is also a damn fine work.
( soundcloud.com/dj-sonjam/dj-sonjam-big-sean-vs-afrojack )
Well, I think that immediately proves my point. The mashups flow steady and with high quality. That's just a small amount of my daily mashup listening, and I don't get to everything by any means. I never even left Soundcloud.com. There's tons of other places to find superb mashups. It's so easy to get into the 'style' that I wouldn't be surprised to see you posting your own tracks soon. ;)
Mix Of The Week
I saw this great mix on King Megatrip's blog
( megatrip.blogspot.com ) called 'The Jazz Meet - Podcast #93 07.03.13 Mr Boogie a.k.a The Vinyl Junkie (Soulsa)' It's rare when you find a great jazz mix, but this is the 2nd one I've heard this week, & it's Monday as I write this. You'll enjoy this tons.

Mashup Tip
Try and sing different vocals to every song you hear. You'll be accomplished at pairing mashups quickly.
Latest Useo Thing
For April Fool's Day I posted a mashup about the goddess of Coffee. '
Ode To Control Caffeina' (December Bride vs Lorenzo Damario) is very catchy, yet with lots of synth, and beats.

If we put billions into infrastructure, it will shrink the deficit over the long run two ways: first, by sending the economy back into high gear, putting people back to work to pay taxes rather than receive unemployment (etc.). Second, it will make our economy more productive - as, say, building the Interstate Highway System did. A more productive economy has the capacity to generate more tax revenue (and requires a smaller social safety budget) than a weak one.

Over the years, California's Republicans moved right as the state moved left, yet retained political relevance thanks to their blocking power. But at this point the state's G.O.P. has fallen below critical mass, losing even its power to obstruct - and this has left Mr. Brown free to push an agenda of tax hikes and infrastructure spending that sounds remarkably like the kind of thing California used to do before the rise of the radical right.

As a young soldier during World War II, Spike Milligan disliked the singing of Lance Bombardier Dodds, who enjoyed singing arias by Puccini a quarter-note flat after lights were out. Lance Bombardier Dodds heard the door open, so he called, "Who is it?" Mr. Milligan replied, "Puccini," and threw the water on him.

Family Pleas For Pardon
Jack Johnson
Relatives and hometown supporters of the nation's first black heavyweight boxing champion are turning to YouTube to convince President Barack Obama to posthumously pardon him of a 1913 conviction for accompanying a white woman across state lines.
Jack Johnson, nicknamed the ''Galveston Giant'' after his Texas hometown, defeated white boxer Jim Jeffries in a 1910 fight dubbed the ''Fight of the Century'' to maintain his title - a victory that sparked deadly race riots across the country.
Three years later, Johnson was convicted by an all-white jury for violating a Jim Crow-era law that made it illegal to transport white women across state lines for ''immoral purposes.'' He was sentenced to a year in prison.
His family and other supporters say he did nothing wrong and that the century-old conviction continues to tarnish Johnson's image. Lawmakers have asked for a pardon three times in the past decade, most recently in March, though none has been successful. The Justice Department has said its general policy is not to process posthumous pardon requests, and the White House declined to comment on the most recent congressional resolution.
So on Sunday, to mark what would have been Johnson's 135th birthday, his relatives and supporters gathered in Galveston to honor him and record a video to go straight to Obama.

"The" Ring?
J.R.R. Tolkien
Could a Roman gold ring linked to a curse have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to create The One Ring?
Britain's National Trust and the Tolkien Society are putting the artifact on display Tuesday for fans of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" to decide for themselves whether this was Tolkien's precious ring of power.
Found in a field near a historic Roman town in southern England in 1785, the gold ring is inscribed in Latin, "Senicianus live well in God," and inset with an image of the goddess Venus. It is larger than average, weights 12 grams, and is believed to date from the 4th century.
The ring is believed to be linked to a curse tablet found separately at the site of a Roman temple dedicated to a god named Nodens in Gloucestershire, western England. The tablet says a man called Silvianus had lost a ring, and it asks Nodens to place a curse of ill health on Senicianus until he returned it to the temple.
An archaeologist who looked into the connection between the ring and the curse tablet asked Tolkien, who was an Anglo-Saxon professor at Oxford University, to work on the etymology of the name Nodens in 1929.

'Nemo' Sequel 'Finding Dory'
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres is going fishing again with a sequel to the animated blockbuster "Finding Nemo."
The Walt Disney Co. and its Pixar Animation unit announced Tuesday that DeGeneres will reprise her "Nemo" voice role for "Finding Dory." The sequel is due out Nov. 25, 2015, and will be directed by Andrew Stanton, who also made "Finding Nemo."
The new film picks up about a year after the action of "Finding Nemo," with DeGeneres' forgetful fish Dory on her own adventure to reunite with loved ones.
According to Disney, the film will feature new characters along with familiar ones, including Nemo and his dad, Marlin, who was voiced by Albert Brooks. There's no word yet from Disney on whether Brooks will reprise his voice role.

Former Voice Sued For 5th Time
Elmo
A puppeteer who was the voice of Elmo on "Sesame Street" is being sued for the fifth time, accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy.
In a federal lawsuit filed in New York on Tuesday, 25-year-old Kevin Kiadii (kee-EH'-dee) says he was 16 when he met Kevin Clash during an online chat.
Kiadii attorney Jeff Herman says Clash sent a limousine to pick up the teen in Brooklyn and take him to his Manhattan apartment for sex.
Herman represents four other people who filed similar lawsuits. He acknowledges his clients were compliant but says the 52-year-old puppeteer took advantage of them by playing father to them.

Newtie's Casino Mogul Pal
Sheldon Adelson
Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is squaring off for the second time with a Hong Kong businessman who says he's owed $328 million for helping Las Vegas Sands Corp. win a gambling license in the Chinese enclave of Macau.
The case turns on whether meetings Richard Suen set up between Sands executives and Beijing officials in 2001 helped the company get a foothold in Macau, a special administrative region of China.
Suen said he was hired by Las Vegas Sands to help build relationships with the Chinese government and should be compensated for his success.
It's the second time this fight has played out in a Clark County court.
A jury decided in Suen's favor in 2008, awarding him $58.6 million. But the Nevada Supreme Court overturned that judgment two years later.

T-Rump Withdraws Lawsuit
Bill Maher
Donald Trump is withdrawing his lawsuit against television host and comedian Bill Maher seeking $5 million that Maher said he would give to charity, in a seemingly facetious offer, if Trump could prove he was not the son of an orangutan.
The lawsuit stems from comments Maher made during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show" in January in which he said an orangutan's fur was the only thing in nature that matches the shade of Trump's trademark hair.
Records in Los Angeles Superior Court show the real estate mogul requested the lawsuit be dismissed without prejudice on Friday, eight weeks after he filed it. His spokesman, Michael Cohen, said Trump plans to file an amended lawsuit sometime in the future.
Legal experts said Trump was unlikely to succeed in his lawsuit because Maher's offer was obviously a joke, and courts rarely enforce verbal contracts that are clearly satirical in nature.

French 'Survivor'
"Koh-Lanta"
A well-known TV doctor overseeing the French "Survivor" reality show has committed suicide following the sudden death of a young contestant he had treated, France's biggest TV station says.
Dr. Thierry Costa killed himself on location Monday on an island in Cambodia, the TF1 station said. Costa, 38, blamed the press for damaging his professional reputation in a handwritten suicide note that TF1 published on its website.
It was the second death in as many weeks to hit the prime-time "Koh-Lanta" show broadcast by TF1.
The first tragedy was a 25-year-old contestant, Gerald Babin, who died March 22 during the first day of filming for the show's 2013 season. Babin went to Costa to get treated for mysterious cramps he had during the season's first tropical challenge but died in a hospital soon after following a heart attack, according to TF1.
The network has not released any details about what the contestants were doing before Babin died but French media said he was engaged in a tug-of-war.

Australia Puts $22.6M Into Remake
'20,000 Leagues'
Australia is paying its biggest Hollywood inducement ever to bring "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" Down Under.
The Walt Disney Studios will film a new version of the science fiction classic in Australia, which will pay the studio 21.6 million Australia dollars ($22.6 million) to film there, the government said Tuesday.
David Fincher of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and "The Social Network" will direct, said Disney Asia-Pacific spokeswoman Alannah Hall-Smith.
The announcement comes after "The Wolverine," starring Australian actor Hugh Jackman, recently wrapped filming in Sydney. The government paid Fox Studios AU$12.8 million to film in Australia.

Paramount, China Movie Channel To Produce
"Transformers 4"
Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures said on Tuesday it reached a deal with the government-run China Movie Channel and its online movie service partner, Jiaflix Enterprises, to produce "Transformers 4" in China.
China Movie Channel said in the joint announcement that the deal marks the first time it will work with a western studio to produce a film in China, although other studios such as Walt Disney Co have entered deals with other parties to produce films there to tap the booming Chinese box office.
The Chinese box office grew 36 percent to $2.7 billion in 2012, reflecting in part the country's move to open its market to more American movies. It did not lift its annual quota of 20 foreign films, but essentially expanded it through other concessions that pleased Hollywood. For instance, Beijing permitted 14 premium format films, such as IMAX or 3D, to be exempt from the quota, as will the 2D versions of those films.
"Transformers 4" is expected to be released in China and in the United States on or about June 27, 2014.

Trashed NYC Loft?
Arianna Huffington
A lawsuit accuses Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington of trashing a New York City loft that she leased from a documentary filmmaker.
Filmmaker Eric Steel filed the suit in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday. It asks for $275,000 in damages.
The lawsuit says cabinets were broken and "the walls of the apartment were gouged, stained and otherwise damaged" during the two years Huffington rented the apartment.
Under the terms of the lease agreement, Steel says Huffington was told she could not use the loft for business or parties.
In a statement, Huffington says Steel "happily" renewed the lease twice and visited the apartment in Manhattan's Chelsea section. She says he has refused to return her $93,000 deposit.

Marks 25th Anniversary
Alaska Volcano Observatory
America's busiest cargo airport is in Anchorage, Alaska, where international flights heading to and from the Far East make frequent stops.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, monitors volcanic eruptions that can wreak havoc on the busy air traffic.
For Alaska, a state that depends on air travel for moving people and goods to its far-flung and remote towns and villages, it's critical to know when and where to expect a volcanic plume.
The state's more than 50 active volcanoes have all erupted since 1760, and there are 29 more simmering on Russia's nearby Kamchatka Peninsula. All could belch ash plumes that clog airplane engines.

Jane Nebel Henson
Jane Nebel Henson, the former wife of Muppets creator Jim Henson who was influential in the creation of the popular U.S. TV puppet program, died on Tuesday following a long bout with cancer, The Jim Henson Company said. She was 78 years old.
Henson, who died at her home in Connecticut, was an "integral creative and business partner" in the Muppets, the company, owned by the Hensons' five children, said in a statement.
Jane Henson, born in Queens, New York, in 1934, was an early puppeteer, as well as puppet designer for the Muppets, best known for characters Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, who starred in numerous television programs and films.
She first met Jim Henson in puppetry class at the University of Maryland in the mid-1950s and the two went on to create together the five-minute television program "Sam and Friends," a precursor to the Muppets.
The show served as a lead-in to "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" news show and "The Tonight Show Starring Steve Allen" on a Washington, D.C., NBC affiliate.
Although Henson stopped working as a puppeteer to raise her children in the early 1960s, she was still responsible for recruiting top talent and performing on occasion on the children's show "Sesame Street."
Henson legally separated from her husband in 1986 prior to his death. She later founded The Jim Henson Legacy to promote his work. She is survived by her five children.
