HARPER'S WEEKLY REVIEW
April 2, 2002
At a meeting of the Arab League in Beirut, the assembled leaders
agreed to endorse Saudi Arabia's proposal for peace with Israel, Iraq
recognized Kuwait's sovereignty and promised not to invade it again,
and Saudi crown prince Abdullah publicly kissed an Iraqi official.
Palestinian militants carried out five suicide bombings in Israel, one
of which was an attack on a Passover seder, and killed at least 44
Israelis.
The Israeli army invaded the West Bank city of Ramallah and
laid siege to Yasir Arafat's headquarters. Arafat said that he wished
for a martyr's death and was for a time reduced to a single candle for
light as he listened to the muffled Hebrew of his captors through the
walls.
Palestinian men and boys were rounded up, water mains and
buildings and cars were destroyed, civilians and at least one American
journalist were shot by snipers. Residents were running low on food,
but the army provided Arafat and his men with 1,000 pitas, 20 bottles
of water, cheese, eggs, flashlights, candles, and canned meat.
Israel declared Ramallah a closed military zone and ordered the foreign press
to leave or risk fines and the loss of credentials.
Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon declared that Israel was at war.
About 40 Europeans
managed to get inside Arafat's office and announced their intention to
act as human shields.
The United States joined the rest of the United
Nations Security Council in demanding that Israel withdraw from
Ramallah, though later that day President George W. Bush, speaking
from his ranch in Crawford, Texas, said that he thought Sharon was
doing what he had to do.
Israeli soldiers were said to be broadcasting
hardcore pornography over three of Ramallah's television stations.

In The Chaos Household
Last Night
The kid & I tried to go the aquarium today, but was deflected by the preparation for the Long Beach Grand Prix, which, of course, pissed me off.
Yes, I know the Long Beach Grand Prix is only for one weekend, and it supposedly brings $ to town, but, not many locals can afford the
tickets anymore, and the inconvenience starts earlier every year.
Dear old Dad in PA called, and I lost a good chunk of prime-time. He never had much time for TV before he retired, and it's such a kick to
hear him talk like he just 'discovered' 'Barney Miller' or '3's Company' (which he really likes).
Late night TV seems to be a duel of the 'Tim's'...Dave has Tim Robbins and Jay has Tim Allen. Dave also has
Jimmie ''JJ'' Walker, for whom Dave used to write.
Tonight, Wednesday, CBS starts the evening with '60 Minutes', a fresh 'Amazing
Race 2' and '48 Hours'.
It's an all fresh night on NBC with 'Ed', 'The West Wing' and 'Law & Order'.
It's also a fresh night at ABC with 'My Wife & Kids', 'George Lopez', 'Drew Carey',
'Wednesday 9:30 (8:30 Central)' and a Peter Jennings Special 'Bless Me Father, For I Have Sinned: The Catholic
Church In Crisis'.
The WB is fresh with 'Dawson's Creek' and 'Felicity'.
Faux is all fresh, too, with 'That 80's Show', 'Grounded For Life', 'Bernie Mac' and 'Greg,
The Bunny'.
UPN has a fresh 'Enterprise' and follows it with 'Wolf Lake' which bombed earlier this year on CBS.
MTV has the '2001 Video Music Awards' hosted by Jamie Foxx.

Big Terrapin Fan
Robert Novak
CNN may think its newly reworked "Crossfire" is big news, but one of the hosts, Robert Novak, didn't bother to show up for the relaunch last
night - insisting he be transmitted via satellite from Atlanta. Novak, a diehard Maryland Terrapins fan, was so thrilled that they made it to
the NCAA finals, he called producers on Sunday night and told them he wouldn't make it to yesterday's premiere. He'd be cheering the team on
in Atlanta instead. "The producers freaked." "Bob wanted to do his bit on the show via satellite. Even Walter Isaacson flew in for this - it's
a big deal - and he won't show? CNN has spent over $1 million on the revamp." Novak got his satellite hookup after warning, "If you don't
accommodate me, I'll go to Fox [News Channel]!" But Novak, who has followed the Terrapins since 1970, insists CNN knew months before of his
satellite plans. "They said it was fine, but I think the producers were planning on Kansas winning. CNN has been very nice to adjust to my
obsession - they never said I couldn't do it."

Family Vacation
The Clintons
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, have arrived for a second straight holiday in the Dominican Republic, this year with
their daughter, Chelsea, a spokesman for the resort said Monday.
For a second straight year, Dominican fashion designer Oscar de la Renta was hosting the Clintons at his villa in the exclusive resort, known for its security and privacy.
On Sunday, the Clintons attended a Catholic church service to celebrate Easter, and then had lunch at Spanish singer Julio Iglesias' home, also at the resort.
Among the guests at Iglesias' home were Dominican president Hipolito Mejia and Pilar de Borbon, sister of Spain's King Juan Carlos.
The Clintons were scheduled to return to the United States on April 6, he said.

Joining 'Children of Dune'
Susan Sarandon
Oscar winner Susan Sarandon has joined the ensemble cast of "Children of Dune," Sci Fi Channel's six-hour mini-series follow-up to the cable
network's Emmy-winning "Frank Herbert's Dune."
Sarandon will portray Wensicia, a ruthless princess eager to restore her deposed royal family in the story that continues the saga of the Atreides family dynasty.
Production is set to begin in Prague on Wednesday, with the creative team behind "Frank Herbert's Dune" returning. Richard Rubinstein is back
as executive producer, while writer John Harrison is adapting Herbert's work for the screen.
The second and third novels in Herbert's six-volume "Dune Chronicles" will serve as the basis for "Children of Dune." The project is slated
to debut on Sci Fi in the first quarter of next year.

Purchasing Art
Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton has eye for art. While giving a series of lucrative lectures in Australia, Bubba also picked up etchings of French beaches
by masters Pierre-August Renoir and Raoul Dufy - plus prints of works by Picasso, Chagall and Joan Miro - for a bargain-basement price
of $26,000 total. Clinton, who maybe needs to cover the bare walls at his Harlem offices, also coughed up $10,000 for two pieces by Aussie
painter David Boyd, reports ARTnewsletter.

Dropping Like Flies
Prime-Time Casualties
Prime-time casualties are piling up as the broadcast networks head into the final two months of the TV season.
On Monday, Fox announced that it would evacuate "The American Embassy" after just four airings, while UPN has dropped reality duo "Under One
Roof" and "The Amazing Race 2" -- which lasted just three weeks on Friday night. The WB, meanwhile, has added a Sunday night movie to its
lineup in place of "For Your Love," which is getting tossed for now.
For example, if you blinked you missed the return of ABC's "The Wayne Brady Show," which aired for all of two weeks last month.
UPN encountered a spate of bad luck with the mid-season comedies "As If" and "Random Years," which failed to hold on to their "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer" lead-in and were sliced within three weeks, before anyone even noticed.
The WB's "My Guide to Being a Rock Star" suffered a similar fate and was pulled after just two weeks (and five airings).
The spring frenzy even forced NBC to make an about-face regarding the Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy "Watching Ellie." The Peacock initially announced it would end "Ellie's"
run this week, holding back seven episodes from the show's mid-season run. But "Ellie," which had dropped almost 50 percent from its February premiere, showed small signs of recovery last week.
As a result, NBC gave "Ellie" a few more chances at bat. The sitcom will now air through April 16, leaving four episodes for next season if the show returns.
If that's not confusing enough for viewers keeping track at home, then there's mid-season entries that were short-lived to begin with. NBC's "The Colin Quinn Show" ended its run
after three episodes -- but that's all the network ordered.
And ABC's "The George Lopez Show" skips out on April 17 after just four segments, which was the maximum number Warner Bros. TV could produce this spring.
Fox will air repeat theatrical "The Wedding Singer" on Monday before "Ally McBeal" returns with a two-hour episode April 15.

Oscars Screwed Up
Peggy Lee
The family of Peggy Lee is blasting the organizers of the Academy Awards for omitting the late great singer/actress from the "In Memoriam" segment of the show. In a letter posted to
PeggyLee.com, Lee's only child, Nicki Foster, writes, "We were stunned that she was not included," adding that her family is dealing with "shock and disappointment." Foster says an
Academy rep informed her the snub was due to time constraints, and that Lee won't even be mentioned in next year's ceremony either. Her family is asking the Academy to reconsider.

Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys says she's amazed at how quickly her debut album, "Songs in A Minor," became a hit.
"It did surprise me, shall I say, that it was accepted in such a wide form so fast from when the album was released," the 21-year-old singer told
reporters. "I did kind of more expect it to be a longer process."
Keys said she'll perform April 9 at the Urban Aid benefit concert in New York City and will headline her own tour beginning July 2 in Milwaukee.

Sen. John Edwards
While North Carolina's Sen. John Edwards isn't exactly a national figure yet, a lot of smart Democrats tip him to be on their party's presidential
ticket for 2004. The deep-pocketed Hollywood crowd will get the chance to look Edwards over tomorrow night when Lynne Wasserman hosts a party from
him at her Beverly Hills home. Lynne's parents, the Democratic kingmakers Lew and Edie, will be there, along with her son, Casey, and his wife, Laura,
Jack Valenti, Carol and Frank Biondi, Lorraine and Sid Sheinberg and other members of the local liberal establishment.

Radiohead's drummer Phil Selway plans to run the London Marathon April 14 and is looking for fans to sponsor him.
Selway posted on the band's W.A.S.T.E. fan site that the intends to raise money for the Samaritans, a British charity that deals with suicide
prevention. He says that his goal is $6,400.
As of last night the fans responded in droves by pledging more than $15,000. Those who donate will be entered into a raffle for the drum kit
Selway used during the recording of "Paranoid Android" and "Exit Music (For A Film)" from the "OK Computer" album.

''Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years''
Jackie's Fashions
The tourism industry is hoping Jackie Kennedy's glittering gowns and jewelry can light up Washington just as the youngest first lady did during her husband's presidency.
"Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years," an exhibition of more than 80 costumes and other possessions, opens Saturday at the Corcoran Gallery of Art after stops in Boston and New York City.
Mrs. Kennedy had kept her "state clothes" in storage and forwarded many of them to the JFK library in 1983. After her death in 1994, her children, John
and Caroline, forwarded the rest.
The gowns are the centerpieces. Called costumes because "she became the star of a show, in a way," Rigg said, they are mostly of solid colors and simple lines
designed to make bold, sleek statements from afar.
The exhibit does not include the clothes she was wearing in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, when her husband was assassinated, or the black suit she wore to the funeral.

'Baywatch' Movie For Faux
David Hasselhoff
"Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff's stalled reunion movie of the lifeguard television drama has hit smooth sailing.
"We've got a TV movie for Fox," Hasselhoff said Sunday. "It's a two-hour (show) that'll air in (November) sweeps. ... Right now we're trying to
put the pieces together to bring it to Hawaii."
Hasselhoff, the movie's producer, said the cast will feature 20 actors from the "Baywatch" and "Baywatch Hawaii" shows.
Hasselhoff hopes to begin three weeks of filming on July 8.
The original "Baywatch" series was filmed in Los Angeles for nine years before relocating to Hawaii and getting a new name in 1998. Hasselhoff
made only occasional appearances after the move, and the series was canceled in February 2001.

''Sharkslayer''
James Gandolfini
James Gandolfini has signed on to voice the "Soprano" of all sharks in DreamWorks Pictures' animated project "Sharkslayer." Animation helmers Eric "Bibo"
Bergeron ("The Road to El Dorado") and Vicky Jenson ("Shrek") are teaming for the first time to direct the CGI-animated project, which will also feature the
voices of Will Smith, Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger.
"Sharkslayer" -- described as an underwater mob film -- is in preproduction, with a 2004 release date planned. It tells the story of how the undersea underworld
is shaken up when the son of the "Soprano" of all sharks gets killed and a young fish named Oscar is found at the scene of the crime. Being the bottom-feeder hustler
that he is, Oscar takes advantage of the opportunity to play the hero, only to find that there are serious consequences to posing as the great Sharkslayer.

Jennifer Connelly was so subdued accepting her Best Supporting Actress Oscar last week, even critic Roger Ebert noted her joylessness in
his column. It turns out her frosty mood was due to man trouble. Just before the show, Connelly broke up with "Sports Night" star Josh
Charles, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Connelly still has her 4-year-old son Kai, fathered by photog David Dugan, to keep her company.

Boss Problems
Halle Berry
Halle Berry may be having a falling out with the cosmetic company that has given her so much exposure.
The New York Post reports that the Oscar-winner and Revlon owner Ron Perelman met up at an Oscar party. Perelman reportedly congratulated Berry on her
award and told her happy he was to have her as a Revlon model. Berry replied, "Of course, now you'll have to pay me more."
The Post says Perelman got angry and walked off, and is now telling the company's attorney to try to capitalize on Berry's new level of fame,
without giving her a dime more.
The Post quotes insiders in the modeling world as saying Berry's contract isn't as lucrative as the one Berry's predecessor, Cindy Crawford, had.

Expanded Role At HBO
Bob Costas
Bob Costas is expanding his role at HBO under a multiyear contract that includes appearances on "Inside the NFL."
Two TV industry sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press about the deal Tuesday. HBO declined comment. However, the cable
network did announce that it will hold a news conference Wednesday, but wouldn't say why.
The HBO deal means Costas won't move to The Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC and ESPN. They had been in talks, with Costas being offered the job as host of
an NBA studio show on ABC and a variety of work at ESPN.
Costas' deal with NBC ends this summer, and both industry sources said Costas could still reach an arrangement with the network for the Olympics. NBC holds the
U.S. TV rights to the 2004, 2006 and 2008 games.

In The Hospital
Mills Lane
Mills Lane, the boxing referee and popular TV judge, remained in stable condition Tuesday after suffering a stroke Sunday night.
The 64-year-old Lane has been in stable condition since he arrived in the intensive-care unit at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, according to his physician, Dr. Paul Katz.
Lane, a well-known Nevada lawyer and former NCAA boxing champ who has refereed some of boxing's biggest fights, is expected to leave the hospital in about a week.
The diminutive, squeaky-voiced Lane drew international attention in 1997 as the referee who disqualified Mike Tyson after he bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear.

Dudley Moore
A small group of family and friends gave a modest send-off on Tuesday to British comedian Dudley Moore, the puckish pianist who became an unlikely
Hollywood sex symbol after starring in "10".
The 66-year-old Moore died last Wednesday of pneumonia after a long battle against Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare, degenerative
Parkinson's-like disease that made him a prisoner in his own body.
Some 30 friends and family -- no big name celebrities -- gathered under a tent and tossed red and white roses onto the grave at the Hillside
Cemetery here, while a small brass and strings band played a dirge.
A flower display shaped into a piano keyboard was left behind to mark the site, which did not yet have a gravestone. Several people left the ceremony
sobbing heavily, making their way back to the procession of cars.
The tight group of attendees huddled together under bright sunshine on a hill overlooking a pond in a small-town cemetery, about 24 miles from New York.
Moore's burial stood in contrast to the funeral of legendary funny man Milton Berle, who was eulogized on Monday in Los Angeles suburb at a zany
memorial heavily attended by Hollywood stars.
The diminutive, 5 ft 3 in (1.60 meter) tall Moore, who liked to call himself a "sex thimble", was once voted the man most women wanted to sleep with.

In Memory
Randy Tufts
Randy Tufts, the co-discoverer of Kartchner Caverns in Arizona, died from the rare blood disease known as myelodysplastic disorder syndrome. He was 53.
Tufts stumbled across a sinkhole in the Whetstone Mountains southwest of Benson in 1967, when he was 18. That sinkhole would eventually lead to the discovery of the
caverns, which have been ranked in the top 10 worldwide.
Tufts didn't return again until 1974, with his friend, Gary Tenen. The two were so impressed with the mineral formations in the cave that they decided to keep their
discovery a secret to ensure the cavern would not be overrun by vandals or throngs of curious cavers.
Four years later, Tufts and Tenen told the Kartchner family, who owned the land. They broke their vow of silence again in 1988 after the state of Arizona purchased
the property from the Kartchner family with plans to protect it. The caverns opened as Kartchner Caverns State Park in November 1999. About 180,000 people tour the caves yearly.
Tufts also waged a public fight against a developer's proposal to put a $40 million resort a half-mile from the caverns, a move some cave experts feared would
pollute Kartchner. The state stopped the project by condemning the property.
