Chocomang's Reggae Mashup Collection Hits The Net!

By DJ Useo

The famous Parisian bootlegger Chocomang recently helmed a very successful Reggae mashup collection. My Bartcop E article on it "12 Reggae Mashups Album" is here ( www.suprmchaos.com/bcEnt-Wed-121317.index.html ) The tunes included are highly addictive, & Chocomang felt the drive enough to surge forward & complete a finest kind Reggae mashup album all on his own. "Chocomang's Reggae Mashup Collection" ( chocomang.org/Albums/ChocomangsReggaeCollection/ ) . We all surely feel the benefit. ( Those of us who listen, that is. ) I think most of us will find the included blends are the "bee's knees".

The fourteen mixes on this collection bring together the best Reggae artists together with various other style artists in such a manner that they sound like they began this way. Chocomang has vast experience, & extensive skills & can work with any style. His handling of production has proved time & again through his posts how much he can thrill the listeners. Once you discover the gems on this Reggae album, you'd be well advised to head over to his site where you can access almost 200 incredible Chocomang mashups ( chocomang.org/mashup/index_en.htm ) .

This set contains pairings such as Bob Marley vs the Proclaimers, Rootical Record Crew vs The Smiths, LionRiddims vs Evanescence, & so very many more. Reggae mashups remain among the more popular styles, yet also are amidst the scarcest of posted blends. This release from Chocomang displays again his finely-honed sense of what people want to hear in a mashup. Try dropping a few of these tracks onto your music app of choice for your friends, & you'll find some very contented company.

Plenty more Chocomang mashups are coming soon on new Audioboots ( audioboots.com ) mashup comps, & his single posts. I think we all owe him a big debt for creating, & sharing his love of mixing. For certainly, he could easily be doing crossword puzzles, or any of a number of alternate activities. I know one bootlegger who quit posting, & got into knitting instead. ( & not mashup knitting, either ) The album is "no-charge", so you can have it right now for the cost of a few right-clicks. Zip file mirror links are here ( chocomang.org/Albums/ChocomangsReggaeCollection/ )

I hope to feature a new mashup album next week. Cross your fingers, & we'll cross the music. Bye for now.

Anecdotes

Grandparents

• The grandparents of children’s book writer Phyllis Reynolds Naylor were characters. She called her paternal grandparents Pappaw and Mammaw. They began courting when she was an infant, and he was a little boy. He would pick her up and say, “This is the girl I’m going to marry.” They did marry — when Mammaw was 15 years old and still playing with dolls. In contrast, her maternal grandparents were adults when they began to court. Her grandfather sent her grandmother a letter, asking two weeks in advance if he could go with her to church. He also offered to have a prominent doctor send a letter to her father stating that the man who wished to court his daughter had a good character.

• The grandfather of Christian writer Dale Hanson Bourke was quite a lively and feisty character. One day, as he was driving during rush hour, a large bus edged him out of the lane he was driving in. This made Grandpa angry, so he rolled down his window and shouted at the bus driver to get out of his lane. The bus driver refused, saying that his bus was bigger than Grandpa’s car. Therefore, Grandpa reached for a sledgehammer he was hauling in his car, hammered a large dent in the side of the bus, then drove off. Grandpa was also a mighty evangelizer — sometimes he even grabbed people by the lapels of their clothing and asked them, “Are you saved?”

• When Grandma Moses at age 80 was invited to attend her first important one-person art exhibit at the Galerie St. Etienne in New York City, she declined to go. Why? As she explained to the gallery director, Otto Kallir, she had no reason to go — she had already seen all of the paintings. Shortly afterward, she did attend an exhibition of her paintings at a Gimbel Brothers department store in New York City. She brought some of her homemade bread and preserves, reasoning that since she had won prizes for them and not her paintings at the county fair, people would be asking her about food and not about art.

• TV’s Mister Rogers was a rambunctious kid. Whenever he was attempting to walk on a stone wall at his grandparents’ farm and his mother or grandmother would try to stop him, his grandfather, who was named Fred McFeely, would tell them, “Let the kid walk on the wall. He’s got to learn to do things for himself.” Mister Rogers loved his grandfather, and in his TV “neighborhood,” one of the characters was a lively old deliveryman named Mr. McFeely.

• When the young granddaughter of artist Edna Hibel developed “lazy eye” and had to wear an eye patch under her glasses, Ms. Hibel taped over one lens of her glasses and painted a rose on it as a decoration to make wearing the eye patch a more pleasurable experience.

Halloween

• Joe, the young son of Lisa M. Wayman, RN, started chemotherapy to treat his cancer, and his hair fell out. Therefore, for his Halloween costume, he dressed up as his bald father. Young Joe even wore a fake beard. Before he died, he taught his mother not to be so serious all the time and to laugh occasionally.

Homes

• Many families have a hard time sharing a bathroom, which is sometimes the busiest room in a house. However, when Paris Singer of the family that manufactured Singer sewing machines bought modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan a hotel outside Paris to serve as her dancing school, she didn’t have to worry about that problem. Of the hotel’s 200 rooms, 80 were bathrooms!

• Not all volcanic eruptions are swift. In Hawaii, one volcano emitted molten lava slowly. In fact, residents on the island had plenty of time to leave their houses and move their household possessions out of the line of lava. In some cases, people sat on lawn chairs and drank cold beer from a safe distance as they watched the molten lava flow upon and destroy their houses.

Trivia Question of the Day

Written in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", this famous folk song was sarcastically called "God Blessed America for Me" before it was renamed. What is the title of this renamed song?

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Performed by an animated band, this song spent four weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was also the number-one single of 1969. What is the name of this sweet AM-radio hit?

       "Sugar, Sugar"                                                      Source     and    Source

"Sugar, Sugar" is a song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. It was originally recorded by the cartoon band the Archies. This version peaked at No. 1 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969 and remained there for four weeks. It also peaked at No. 1 on the UK Singles chart in that same year for eight weeks. The song became a hit again in 1970 when rhythm and blues and soul singer Wilson Pickett took it back onto the charts with his own version.

After topping the RPM 100 national singles chart in Canada on September 13, 1969 (where it spent three weeks), the single went on to spend four weeks at the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 from September 20 through October 11. It spent a total of 22 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 and was the 1969 US number-one single of the year. The song was classified by the RIAA as a gold record in August 1969, meaning it had sold one million units (the gold threshold was later lowered to 500,000). It ranked #81 on Billboard's "Hot 100 60th Anniversary" chart.        Source

This was the #1 song of 1969 in the US, according to Billboard's year-end chart, beating out songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, David Bowie, and Stevie Wonder. It logged more weeks on the Hot 100 (22) than any other song that year. "Sugar, Sugar" was also a huge hit in the UK, where it stayed at #1 for eight weeks.        Sugar, Sugarby The Archies | SongFacts

The Archies - Sugar, Sugar (Original 1969 Music Video)

When I worked at the TV station in Anchorage, The Archies was the weekday 4pm staple.
The program was on 2" (quad) video tape and the episodes had aired a week earlier in Hawai'i.
The quad tape had an extra audio channel that didn't air, but was heard in the control room - it sometimes offered directions on upcoming events, but in this case, someone recorded a countdown track to impending commercials, with occasional commentary, in Hawaiian Pidgin.
Listening for the commercials was the best part of the show.

Mark. was first, and correct, with:
   Sugar, Sugar.

Billy in Cypress       U.S.A. said:
   "Sugar, Sugar"

Cal in Vermont wrote:
Oh, God. "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies". You could get diabeetus just by listening to it. A much better song that year was "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" by the Fifth Dimension which came in at number 2.

Alan J answered:
   Sugar, Sugar by the Archies.

Stephen F responded:
   Sugar Sugar

Roy, Antifa Sergeant at Arms in Tyler, TX replied:
I woke up way too early today, but I have an 8:30 appointment for my second Covid shot and I know it's gonna be a long day sitting in the car for about 3 hours like I did for shot number 1. But I hope my radio can erase the earworm you have given me this morning. I knew right off the bat it was The Archies from back in 1969, and right away "Sugar, Sugar" started playing on repeat in my head.

(The insufferable) Sugar, Sugar by The Archies. Written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. The musicians who played on the cut were managed by producer Don Kirshner, who also was responsible for choosing the early songs for another fake TV band, The Monkees. Listening to a Top 40 AM radio station in the summer of ’69 was hard to take because Sugar, Sugar was constantly in rotation.

Mac Mac said:

Jim from CA, retired to ID, answered:
   Sugar, Sugar by the Archies

John I from Hawai`i says,
   Sugar sugar.

Deborah, the Master Gardener responded:
Oh, is it the Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar?” (I think that’s the title; I can sing most of it, still. Earworm alert!)
Windy and dry, again. Sure is getting old.

David of Moon Valley replied:
   another earworm supreme...
…in the Archies’ Sugar Sugar, at least that’s my guess….foo-ick…gonna have to crank the volume on the hi-fi stereo to blast the tentacles of this one outta my brain….

Barbara, of Peppy Tech fame wrote:
The answer is "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies, the epitome of "Bubblegum" pop. The top #2-5 songs of that year, according to the Billboard Hot 100 Singles list, are far superior, in my not-at-all-humble opinion!

Dave in Tucson said:
The nausea inducing song was Sugar Sugar by The Archies. Think The Starchies would have been more preferable.

Starchie eventually wound up in prison until the criss crosses on the side of his head turned gray.

Daniel in The City answered:
Sugar, Sugar by the Archies. The “sweet” clue gave it away.

Bob from Mechanicsburg, Pa replied:
   "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies.
I knew the answer but I looked it up just to be sure. I was 18 back then, did a little weed and was into Jethro Tull, The Doors and The Beatles. We thought we were hip and called "Sugar, Sugar" bubblegum music, but it was and still is a great song.

Rosemary in Columbus responded:

Broadway Bound

'Game of Thrones'

Game of Thrones is headed to Broadway.

A dramatic stage show spectacular based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world is now in development, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The play is from producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson (The Illusionists), in partnership with Kilburn Live, and will have a story by Martin, who is working alongside award-winning playwright Duncan MacMillan (1984) and acclaimed director Dominic Cooke (The Courier). The team’s goal is to debut productions in New York City, London’s West End and in Australia. The first show is expected to launch in 2023.

The production includes a particularly unique story element that should be a huge draw for fans: While many prequel projects have been put into development since Thrones concluded in 2019, this will mark the first to bring back several of the most beloved Game of Thrones characters. The as-yet-untitled play is set during a pivotal moment in Westeros history, The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, a contest that took place just 16 years before the events in Game of Thrones.

HBO is not formally involved with the project at this point but has the option to invest in the production at a later date. In addition to Painter and Lawson, Vince Gerardis and Jonathan Sanford will also serve as executive producers.

Loses Top Ratings Spot

‘Jeopardy!’

“Jeopardy!” ratings dropped another 5% in Katie Couric’s second week as guest host, falling behind “Family Feud” to finish second for the first time since Alex Trebek’s last episodes.

“Jeopardy!” finished with a 5.3 household rating, while “Family Feud” led the week ending March 21 with a 5.4 rating.

Couric was the game show’s first-ever female host. On March 8, she took the baton from “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards, who himself grabbed it from the game’s legendary champion and current consulting producer Ken Jennings. Next up on the show’s guest-hosting rotation was Dr. Oz, who began his run last week (though many were not pleased he got the gig at all). We’ll know how he stacked up next week.

“Jeopardy!” has been on a wild ratings ride in 2021. The final episodes for longtime host Alex Trebek, who died in November following a battle with pancreatic cancer, hit season highs in early January. The show pulled in a 6.6 rating across his farewell week, with his final episode on Jan. 8 drawing 14 million viewers, more than any episode in over a year.

Future guest hosts as the show works out a permanent succession plan include Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker and “Call Me Kat” star Mayim Bialik. The show will make a donation to a charity of each guest host’s choosing in an amount equal to the contestants’ cumulative winnings during their respective week of episodes.

WWE Hall of Fame

William Shatner

William Shatner is the latest celebrity to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, the company announced on Tuesday.

Shatner will be inducted as part of the class of 2020 during the 2021 Hall of Fame ceremony on April 6. The class of 2020 never got to have an event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Star Trek icon first appeared on WWE programming in 1995 as a guest on Jerry 'The King; Lawler's talkshow, King's Court. The actor performed a monkey flip on Lawler.

Shatner returned the next week on Raw to accompany Bret 'The Hitman' Hart to the ring as he faced Jeff Jarrett. Shatner attacked Jarrett's partner, Road Dogg.

The 90-year-old was also a special guest host on Raw in 2010 and was the narrator for WWE Network series, WWE Breaking Ground.

Court Ruling

Defamation Suit

Former President Donald Trump (R-Lock Him Up) could face questioning under oath about a former “Apprentice” contestant’s sexual assault allegations against him, following a ruling from New York’s highest court Tuesday.

Evidence-gathering has been on hold in Summer Zervos’ defamation lawsuit since Trump asked the high court last year to declare the that the presidency protected him from being sued in state courts. In a one-sentence ruling, the Court of Appeals tossed Trump’s appeal as moot now that he’s out of the White House.

Lawyers for the woman, Summer Zervos, had asked the high court to nix the appeal and return her defamation suit to a trial court for both sides to continue pretrial evidence-seeking that could eventually enable Zervos’ lawyers to quiz Trump under oath, and his to question her. Deadlines for such questioning, known as a deposition, had been set for last year before Trump appealed to the high court.

Zervos is suing Trump for calling her a liar after she went public during his 2016 campaign with allegations that he subjected her to unwanted kissing and groping twice in 2007. She had appeared on his reality show “The Apprentice” in 2006 and said she was looking only for career advice when she contacted him afterward.

Zervos is seeking a retraction, an apology and damages.

'Worm Tornado'

New Jersey

Spring rains often bring scores of earthworms to the surface, where they writhe on top of soil and sidewalks. But recently, heavy rainfall in a town near New York City was followed by something a little more unusual: a wormnado.

A resident of Hoboken, New Jersey was out for a morning walk in a park near the Hudson River on March 25, when she spotted hundreds of worms spread along the walkway. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told Live Science that after her initial surprise she noticed something even more bizarre — a number of the worms had formed a cyclone-like shape, creating a spiral where the edge of the grass met the concrete.

The woman took photographs and sent them to Tiffanie Fisher, a member of the Hoboken City Council, who shared the images of the "tornado of worms" on Facebook. "Clearly worms come out after it rains but this is something I've never seen!" Fisher wrote in the post.

When the photographer saw the worm tornado, they weren't actively spiraling, although individual worms still wriggled in place, she told Live Science. There were no open pipes nearby, and though most of the worms were spread out in a big swirl, there were plenty of worms extending beyond the outer curve of the wormnado; they clung to the wall of a nearby building, and dribbled down the curb and into the road, the woman said.

In any case, whatever may have caused the Hoboken wormnado didn't last. When the woman who photographed it returned to the park a few hours later, the swirl had disappeared.

YouTube Cooking Show

Italian Cuisine

A mafia fugitive has been arrested in the Dominican Republic after inadvertently tipping off police with his culinary hobby.

After seven years on the run, Marc Feren Claude Biart was tracked down through a YouTube cooking channel he started with his wife, Italian police said in a statement.

The alleged gangster's "love for Italian cuisine” — and tattoo ink — made his arrest possible, police said.

Though he carefully hid his face during the videos, Biart failed to disguise a distinctive giveaway: his body tattoos.

Police said they believe Biart is a member of the notorious ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate — one of the most feared and powerful in Europe — from the Calabria region at the toe of southern Italy's boot-shaped peninsula.

World's Coldest

Cloud

A severe thunderstorm cloud that formed over the Pacific Ocean in 2018 reached the coldest temperatures ever recorded, according to a new study.

The very top of the storm cloud reached a bone-chilling minus 167.8 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 111 degrees Celsius), colder than any storm cloud measured before. Thunderstorms and tropical cyclones, a circular low-pressure storm, can reach very high altitudes — up to 11 miles (18 kilometers) from the ground — where the air is much cooler, according to a statement from the U.K.'s National Center for Earth Observation.

But this new temperature is on another level. The top of the storm cloud was about 86 F (30 C) colder than typical storm clouds, according to the statement. The beast of a storm loomed about 249 miles (400 km) south of Nauru in the Southwest Pacific on Dec. 29, 2018, and its clouds' temperature was picked up by an infrared sensor aboard the U.S.'s NOAA-20 satellite orbiting the planet.

Storms typically spread out into an anvil-like shape when they reach the top of the troposphere, the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. But if a storm has a lot of energy, it will shoot into the next layer, the stratosphere. This phenomenon, known as an "overshooting top," pushes storm clouds to very high altitudes, where it's bitterly cold.
