M Is FOR MASHUP - March 28th, 2012
Five Mashup Albums You Can't Buy
By DJ Useo
I call 2012 the year of the mashup album. They thrive under quite difficult circumstances, & yet provide some of the best modern musical moments. It's true bootleg albums can't be charged for, but that doesn't slow down the constant flow. Free aint too bad anyway, whaddayasay? There's a great batch of them posted anew, so let's dip into them right away.
01 - 'The Mashup Radio and Musique Culture presents
MASHUP CULTURE VOL.1' is the first album from the swell new online radio station,
The Mashup Radio
( www.themashupradio.com/ ) . It has great tracks from mixers like KrazyBen, DJ's From Mars & MightyMike, plus 18 more. You'll hear Metallica vs Queen, Motley Crue vs Status Quo, Alanis Morisette vs David Guetta & so many more. If this album isn't enough, I urge you to bookmark & listen to this awesome new radio station.

02 - 'Dan Mei - Nightwish - Imaginaerum Mashup EP' Yields fantastic results from dipping into the musical wonder of Nightwish. Mr.Mei is assuredly one of the hottest mashup dj's around, judging fromhis d/l numbers alone. This collection is a fine demonstration of why. It may seem slight at only 5 tracks, but these are bootleg gems all. Dan Mei blows us away with the unexpected combo of Nightwish vs Green Day vs t.A.T.u. vs Katy Perry. After that amazing mix demonstration, it's clear this is one of the best bootleg experiences you'll ever have. To add more icing to the already over-frosted cake, he's provided videos for each track. Have a memorable blast

03 - DJ Athom made the first Morcheeba tribute album 'Morcheeboot' by himself. 'MORCHEEBOOT 2' adds 10 other superb dj's like Sebwax, Chocomang & Michmash, resulting in one dynamite release. Morcheeba are already a great act, but add bootleg dj's & bands like Al Green, Green Day & Red Hot Chili Peppers to the recipe & the new flavours rule! With any luck, there'll be a 3rd collection next year.
Grab it here, before the fun police kill it.

04 - 'DJ Flashard - The Nickelback Mash EP' takes that rockin' band Nickelback & spices them up with bits of Britney, Maroon 5, James Blunt, Green Day, & The Script. DJ Flashard has demonstrated time & again his ability to pair amazingly complimentary material while adding a strong bootleg sound. In his own words, he says "Well, I wanted to do something a little different, so having laid my hands on the Nickelback pellas I thought I'd have a go at releasing an EP with 4 tracks on using vocals from the same band. The mentals are from a number of different artists. Hopefully they present Nickelback in a slightly different light. Anyway, would love to know what you think. Cheers."

"The Hunger Games" is an honorable beginning for a franchise (which is surely what it will become; author Suzanne Collins, who also worked on the script, has continued and concluded the story in two subsequent books). One hopes that the digital effects will be muscled up for the next outing and that more colorful actors along the lines of Tucci and Harrelson will be brought on board. But this is Jennifer Lawrence's show; she's an action girl whom anyone might look forward to seeing back in action.

Archives, Letters And Notes Go Online
Nelson Mandela
Thousands of letters, photographs and documents relating to former South African President Nelson Mandela went online on Tuesday in a project aimed at increasing access to the archives which detail his long walk to freedom.
Items including letters Mandela wrote to his family that were smuggled out of prison, his Methodist church membership card from about 80 years ago and hand-written diaries have been digitized and laid out on a website (archive.nelsonmandela.org) designed to look like a museum exhibit.
The project, with an initial cost of $3 million, was put together by the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and the Google Cultural Institute.
It is a first for Internet giant Google, which has made sure the material is open to all and original copyright holders keep their rights. Google is planning to use this project as a springboard to bring more content on line from other historical figures of the 20th century.

Refuses To Air Video
Al-Jazeera
Al Jazeera has declined to air a haunting video of three separate shooting attacks that occurred in southern France earlier this month.
The video, delivered to Al Jazeera's Paris bureau on a USB stick, portrays the three attacks, executed by Mohammed Merah in Toulouse and Montauban, in chronological order.
Merah said the shootings, which resulted in the deaths of three soldiers, three Jewish children and a rabbi, were inspired by Al Qaeda. He titled the video "Al Qaeda attaque la France," meaning Al Qaeda attacks France.
"In accordance with Al Jazeera's Code of Ethics, given the video does not add any information that is not already in the public domain, its news channels will not be broadcasting any of its contents," the network said in a statement.
Zied Tarrouche, Al Jazeera's Paris bureau chief, said the video was of high technical quality but the camera was shaky. It was doctored after the shootings, as evidenced by religious songs and recitations clearly added in after the fact. The note appended to the video was written in poor French.

Vermont Gathering
More Cowbell!
Taking Christopher's Walken's classic "Saturday Night Live" demands literally, residents of northern Vermont are planning to form the "World's Largest Cowbell Ensemble" next month.
The gathering, slated for April 14 in Burlington, Vt., will be hosted by Ben & Jerry's and the WaterWheel Foundation, a nonprofit organization launched by local Vermont rock group Phish. The band's drummer, Jon Fishman, will lead the cowbell ensemble, and all proceeds from the event-which coincides with the 15th anniversary of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food ice cream-will benefit the group's ongoing Vermont flood relief efforts stemming from Hurricane Irene.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest simultaneous cowbell ringing occurred in 2003 Glarus, Switzerland, where "1,306 participants rang a total of 2,055 cowbells."
Ben & Jerry's is hoping that its offer of free scoops of Phish Food-served from a nearby scoop truck for the duration of the event-will entice enough participants to break that mark.

Spot Marked With Heritage Plaque
Ziggy Stardust
London authorities have put up a plaque to commemorate a small street with a big place in rock history.
Spandau Ballet star Gary Kemp on Tuesday unveiled the plaque in Heddon Street, 40 years after David Bowie stood on the spot for the cover photo of his album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars."
Photographer Brian Ward's picture of a guitar-toting Bowie, in futuristic jumpsuit, standing in the lamp-lit alley helped establish the British musician as a mold-breaking star.
Kemp, a longtime Bowie fan, said Ziggy offered a dash of glamor in a "much darker, more impoverished London" than the city of today.

Guitars, Recording Gear Up For Auction
Les Paul
Historic guitars from Les Paul's personal collection and recording equipment owned by the pioneering musician will be sold at auction.
Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien says the sale includes rare guitars, effects pedals, mixing consoles and the grand piano from Paul's home recording studio. Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills will host the sale over three days, including what would have been Paul's 97th birthday: June 9.
A guitarist and inventor, Paul developed one of the first solid-body electric guitars - released commercially in 1952 as the Gibson Les Paul - as well as the technology behind modern multi-track recording. He is recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
The auction benefits the Les Paul Foundation.

Staind Bassist
Johnny April
An ambulance company that serves six rural western Massachusetts towns has purchased a new ambulance thanks to a $150,000 gift from the bass player for the hard rock band Staind.
The gift from Johnny April enabled Highland Ambulance to buy a new vehicle to replace its aging 1998 model.
Highland Ambulance director Michael Rock says the gift was a "godsend." Rock tells The Recorder of Greenfield the old ambulance was nearing the end its useful life and the company would have been hard pressed affording a new one.
Highland serves the towns of Ashfield, Chesterfield, Cummington, Goshen, Plainfield and Williamsburg. It responds to about 550 calls per year.

Storied Studio Buildings To Be Demolished
West Hollywood
Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks worked there. So did Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and practically everyone else.
Soon, though, wrecking crews will be at work at the storied West Hollywood movie lot at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Formosa Avenue.
Once known as the Warner Hollywood Studio, it's now called "The Lot." Its new owner, CIM Group, intends to raze its aging wooden office buildings and sound-dubbing stages and replace them with glass-and-steel structures.
The studio was built in 1919 by silent-movie maker Jesse Hampton. A short time later, he sold the lot to screen stars Pickford and Fairbanks, who renamed the 18-acre place Pickford-Fairbanks Studio. It later became known as the United Artists Studio when the pair teamed up with Chaplin and D.W. Griffith to form United Artists.
The studio's old buildings are packed with tradition.

TV Hacking Claims
James Murdoch
A British lawmaker is to demand that the UK television watchdog probe new hacking claims against News Corp, piling more pressure on BSkyB Chairman James Murdoch, whose fitness to own a broadcast license is already under scrutiny.
A BBC Panorama documentary broadcast on Monday alleged NDS, a pay-TV smartcard maker recently sold by News Corp for $5 billion, hired a consultant to post the encryption codes of ITV Digital, a key rival of the then Sky TV, on his website.
Widespread piracy after the online publication of the codes contributed to the 2002 collapse of ITV Digital, which had been set up by the parties that later formed ITV, Britain's leading free-to-air commercial broadcaster, in 1998.
BSkyB, now Britain's dominant pay-TV broadcaster, is 39 percent owned by News Corp. Murdoch sits on NDS's board.
Regulator Ofcom is already investigating both Murdoch and News Corp in the light of new evidence emerging from probes into phone and computer hacking and bribery at the News of the World tabloid, which News Corp shut down last July.

Statue Stolen
Lorax
They took the Lorax, made of bronze, the thieves they came, and now he's gone.
A 2-foot statue of Dr. Seuss's the Lorax was stolen from the San Diego backyard garden of the 90-year-old widow of the beloved author whose real name was Theodore Geisel.
Property manager Carl Romero told U-T San Diego on Tuesday that he noticed footprints indicating the thieves had dragged the 300-pound statue to an access road and lifted it over a fence.
Audrey Geisel's daughter Lark Grey Dimond-Cate cast two of the sculptures. One was the lone Seuss character to reside on the family's property overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla. The other sits at the Dr. Seuss National Memorial in the author's hometown, Springfield, Mass. Theodore Geisel died in 1991 at age 87.
Dimond-Cates said she actually hopes the Lorax was stolen because of his newfound fame. Otherwise it could mean he was stolen for the bronze.

Charging $50 for Photos
Noot
In a sign that his campaign is in need of fresh funds, Newt Gingrich on Monday began charging $50 to have a photograph taken with him following a campaign speech to Republican groups here in the northernmost part of the state.
It was the first time that the former House speaker has charged those attending one of his public speaking events to pose for a photograph with him. Lately, a member of his campaign staff has been snapping photos of any interested attendee and later posting them online at the campaign's website, Newt.org.
On Monday night, those paying for a photograph were also told they could find their photos on Gingrich's website, after they had filled out a form providing their credit card information.
Gingrich held only one public event on Monday in Delaware, which votes on April 24. He was scheduled to travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, but that trip was cancelled on Monday in favor of campaigning in the D.C. area. The former speaker will spend his next two days there and in Maryland before heading to Wisconsin at the end of the week.

Nuke Plant To Remain Shut
San Onofre
The troubled San Onofre nuclear plant in Southern California will remain shut down while investigators try to solve a mystery inside its massive generators - the rapid decay of tubing that carries radioactive water, federal regulators said Tuesday.
The announcement that formalized an agreement with operator Southern California Edison came on the same day that a report commissioned by an environmental group claimed the utility misled the Nuclear Regulatory Commission about design changes that are the likely culprit in excessive tube wear.
A four-page letter to Edison from NRC Regional Administrator Elmo E. Collins laid out a series of steps the company must take before restarting the seaside reactors located 45 miles north of San Diego, underscoring the concern over the unusual degradation in the tubes.
Collins wrote that the problems in the generators must be resolved and fixed and "until we are satisfied that has been done, the plant will not be permitted to restart."
The plant's four steam generators each contain nearly 10,000 alloy tubes that carry hot, pressurized water from the reactors. The Unit 3 reactor was shut down as a precaution in January after a tube break, and extensive wear was found on similar tubing in its twin, Unit 2, which has been shut down for maintenance.

French Commune Awaiting Alien Salvation
Pic de Bugarach
An estimated 20,000 New Age believers who say the "upside down" mountain is home to aliens who will rescue them from an impending apocalypse have saturated a small French commune near the foot of the picturesque Pic de Bugarach.
The Independent reports the growing flock, who locals refer to as "esoterics," believe the world will come to an end on December 21st, 2012. They also reportedly believe that the unique mountain is in fact home to a race of alien beings that will emerge to rescue the gathered humans and transport them to a new civilization.
Pic de Bugarach has long been famous because rock samples taken from its peak are actually older than points measured at lower elevation. Scientists say that is because when the 1,230 meter mountain erupted its peak flipped upside down before crashing back down upon the mountain's base. The mountain is said to have played a role in inspiring everything from Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," to Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
The BBC reports that the French government is concerned about mass suicides taking place near Pic de Bugarach in advance of the December 21 date and that there have been reports of "strange rituals" taking place there as well.
