M Is FOR MASHUP - March 27th, 2013
Intense Psychedelia 7 - Who'da thunk'it?
By DJ Useo
I never would have believed it if someone had told me I'd mix up seven psychedelic mashup albums, yet the IP series is the one that gets me the most by way of personal responses. Especially when the links go dead! Lol! Personally, I love the psychedelic mashup style. Yet no one else does them, mainly, so if I want to hear them I have to make them myself. I realize ithey're not going to be to everyones tastes, but for those of you that relate to this style it provides something rare and appealing.
For this 7th volume, basically what happened was I had loaded about 15 hours of favorite psychedelic tracks onto my itunes program. Every so often when listening to them, I'd get this tingle in my head and an idea for a mashup would pop up. Then, I'd cut and loop the track to remove the vocals thus providing me with an instrumental to add singing to. A truly great example of this style is track 3, 'Oh My Love Let Me Roll It' (Paul McCartney vs John Lennon). I made loops of John's song, and then was delighted to discover the Paul vocals fit perfectly. An interesting side-note on this particular mix is it's the only mellow track. Otherwise it's mostly intense in one way, or another all the way through. Here's the playlist

Goa Spirit offers up the marvelous 'Goa Psychedelic Mix 2'. I am big on Goa music and found this mix top-notch. One drawback is there's no playlist, but I bet if you really need to know who he used, you can contact Goa Spirit on facebook, or the like.

Mashup Tip
If you want to stretch vocals slower than might be wise, do it in small increments, or gradually as we say here in Texas. They won't sound so thin that way.
Latest Useo Thing
In my continuing scheme to make more Hip Hop mashups, I off you 'Funky U-T Heroes'
(Afrika Bambaataa vs Yellow Magic Orchestra) .This mix has extreme genre clash as the source tracks come from far-unrelated styles of music. Don't consider that a hindrance to enjoyment, though, as the initial reaction has consistently been "You made this?!?" and "I love it!".

Podgornio, The Mashup Psychic Predicts
Motown and mashups will experience a huge resurgence in the next few months as they combine more extensively. What? Of course I'm serious. Didn't I correctly predict the PSY mashup phenomena?

TV Writing
Women and minorities have made some gains over the past decade, but the overall picture on the TV writing front remains bleak, according to a study released Tuesday by the Writers Guild of America West.
The WGAW's latest analysis of the state of diversity, the 2013 TV Staffing Brief, finds that while there have been some recent job gains for minority and women writers, the employment playing field in Hollywood is far from level
The research shows minority and women writers have made incremental gains in employment over the past decade-plus period, but current TV staffing levels still continue to be widely disproportionate to actual minority demographics of the U.S. population.
The study analyzes employment patterns for 1,722 writers working on 190 broadcast and cable TV shows during the 2011-2012 season, highlighting three specific groups who have traditionally been underemployed in the TV industry: women, minority, and older writers.
A number of writing staff remain dominated by white males. Roughly 10% of TV shows in the 2011-12 season had no female writers on staff; and nearly a third had no minority writers on staff. In the 2010-2011 television season, only 9% of pilots had at least one minority writer attached, while just 24% of pilots had at least one woman writer attached.

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
Marisol Misenta
Argentine illustrator and writer Marisol Misenta, better known as Isol, won the 5 million kronor ($780,000) Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children's literature on Tuesday for picture books that "vibrate with energy and explosive emotions," the prize jury said.
Isol has written and illustrated 10 children's books, starting with her 1997 debut "Vida de Perros" ("A Dog's Life"). She has also illustrated works by other authors, including Argentine poet Jorge Lujan and U.S. novelist Paul Auster.
Her illustrations have the feel of a child's drawings, which she says reflects her desire to show readers that it's OK to break the rules.
The annual award - the world's largest for children's literature - is named after the late Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of the Pippi Longstocking book series.

Sells Jewels For Charity
Gina Lollobrigida
Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, one of the leading sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s, is selling some of her diamond jewelry to raise money for stem cell research, saying now is the time to give back for the fortunate life she has had.
As her career took off in France, Italy and Hollywood, Lollobrigida said she started to collect jewels from Bulgari, always buying them herself and enjoying the purchasing power of her hard work.
Now 85 and having largely left acting in the 1980s for photojournalism, humanitarian work and sculpting, Lollobrigida said it was time to put the jewelry to good use.
Lollobrigida said she will donate the proceeds to a fund to set up a hospital for stem cell research.

Judge Orders Tapes Handed Over To LAPD
Manson Family
A federal judge has ordered taped conversations between Manson Family killer Charles "Tex" Watson and his now-deceased defense lawyer turned over to Los Angeles police, who are investigating the cult's possible involvement in old, unsolved murders.
The written order by District Judge Richard Schell in Texas, which was made public on Tuesday, upholds a ruling last year by a federal bankruptcy judge that was appealed by Watson, 67, who is serving a life prison term in California.
The Watson tapes contain some eight hours of discussions between the Manson follower and attorney Bill Boyd that were recorded in 1969 after his arrest for the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in Los Angeles.
The recordings surfaced during federal bankruptcy proceedings in Texas involving Boyd's now-defunct law firm, which represented Watson.
Los Angeles police Detectives could not obtain the recordings until Watson waived his attorney-client privilege so they could be sold to satisfy unpaid legal fees. Boyd died in 2009.

Interfering DA?
Judge Judy
A suburban district attorney who is the son of TV's "Judge Judy" is being accused of interfering in a child rape case in which the suspect is his personal trainer.
Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy has recused himself. But the local sheriff says Levy is still trying to influence, and perhaps undermine, the investigation.
Levy says he has acted properly and the sheriff's allegations are unfounded.
The two politicians have also argued over whether the suspect lived with Levy and whether Levy's recusal was his own idea.

Creationist Offers $10,000
Genesis
A California man who believes the literal interpretation of the Bible is real is offering $10,000 to anyone who can successfully debunk claims made in the book of Genesis in front of a judge.
And for a man wanting to debate the very nature of human existence, Joseph Mastropaolo is taking a decidedly happy-go-lucky approach, saying he hopes the contest will improve future discussions on both sides of the argument.
Mastropaolo's plan is to put $10,000 of his own money into an escrow account. His debate opponent would be asked to do the same. They would then jointly agree on a judge based on a list of possible candidates. Mastropaolo said that any evidence presented in the trial must be "scientific, objective, valid, reliable and calibrated."
For his part, Mastropaolo has a Ph.D. in kinesiology and writes for the Creation Hall of Fame website, which is helping to organize the minitrial. It's also not the first such trial he's tried to arrange. A previous effort, known as the "Life Science Prize," proposed a similar scenario. Mastropaolo includes a list of possible circuit court judges to oversee the trial and a list of those he challenged to take part on the evolutionary side of the debate.

Film Festival Cancels Award
"Landscape Of Lives"
A U.S. film festival has withdrawn an award given to a British movie about a Gulf War veteran seeking justice after a London court jailed five people for making the movie as part of 2.8 million pound ($4.3 million) tax scam.
Tax inspectors were told that A-listers from Hollywood would be starring in a 19.6 million pound production that would be shot in Britain.
But the gang never intended to make the film "Landscape Of Lives," Southwark Crown Court in London heard on Monday.
When tax inspectors started becoming suspicious, the gang tried to cover their tracks by actually making a low-budget film about a Gulf War veteran seeking justice for a murdered comrade.
Just as in this year's Oscar Best Picture winner "Argo" - in which the CIA dreams up a fake sci-fi movie, complete with screenplay, posters and advertisements as cover for a hostage-rescue mission - the low-budget production was announced in film industry magazines.
It then even went on to win a Silver Ace award at last year's Las Vegas film festival.

Files For Bankruptcy
Dionne Warwick
Singer Dionne Warwick owes nearly $10 million in back taxes and has filed for bankruptcy.
In a Chapter 7 petition filed this month in New Jersey, Warwick lists liabilities that include nearly $7 million owed to the Internal Revenue Service for the years 1991 to 1999 and more than $3 million in business taxes owed to the state of California. Warwick lists her current address in South Orange.
The singer of classics such as "Walk On By," ''I Say a Little Prayer" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" also lists about $21,000 in monthly income and about the same amount in monthly expenses.
Warwick's publicist says the singer has paid back the actual amount of the taxes but that penalties and interest have accumulated over the years.

Expensive Upkeep
Ex-Presidents
Former President Bill Clinton's 8,300-square-foot Harlem office near the Apollo Theater costs taxpayers nearly $450,000. George W. Bush spends $85,000 on telephone fees, and another $60,000 on travel. Jimmy Carter sends $15,000 worth of postage - all on the government's dime.
The most exclusive club in the world has a similarly exclusive price tag - nearly $3.7 million, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That's how much the federal government spent last year on the four living ex-presidents and one presidential widow.
Topping the list in 2012 was George W. Bush, who got just over $1.3 million last year.
Under the Former Presidents Act, previous inhabitants of the Oval Office are given an annual pension equivalent to a Cabinet secretary's salary - about $200,000 last year, plus $96,000 a year for a small office staff. Taxpayers also pick up the tab for other items like staff benefits, travel, office space and postage.
The $3.7 million taxpayers shelled out in 2012 is about $200,000 less than in 2011, and the sum in 2010 was even higher. It's a drop in the bucket compared with the trillions the federal government spends each year.

'Small World' Breakdown
Disney
An attorney says a disabled man was awarded $8,000 by Disneyland after the "It's A Small World" ride broke, stranding him for three hours while the theme song played continuously.
Lawyer David Geffen says Jose Martinez was the only passenger not evacuated when the ride broke down in 2009, and staffers failed to call the fire department to free him.
The ride's familiar song couldn't be turned off the entire three hours Martinez was stuck.
Geffen says Martinez uses a wheelchair, suffers from panic attacks and high blood pressure, and needed to urinate for much of the time he was stranded.
Geffen says half the award ordered Friday is for pain and suffering, and the other half for disability law violations.

Personal Recipe Whiskey
George Washington
Like his fellow Founding Fathers, George Washington was a man of many talents. Among the numerous skills of America's first president was the ability to create his own unique blend of whiskey.
And now, the curators of the Mount Vernon estate plan to release a limited run of the rye whiskey made according to George Washington's specifications.
The curators of Mount Vernon previously re-created Washington's 250-year-old distillery, which was one of the largest in America in Washington's day. During its peak year of 1799, his distillery produced 11,000 bottles of rye whiskey.
The distillery will produce about 10 percent of that annual volume, creating a batch of 1,100 bottles, which will sell for $95 each, beginning April 4.
Washington's whiskey was a blend of 60 percent rye, 35 percent corn, and 5 percent malted barley, resulting in what the website Death And Taxes described as tasting like "rotgut at best."
