Mashup Changes Continue
By DJ Useo
The bootleg thrills continue as “The Institute Of Bootleggers Presents Mashup Changes”
( theinstituteofbootleggers.blogspot.com/2022/03/institute-of-bootleggers-presents.html )
hits the net. This long running mashup series is, like, the 23rd in this series. The title was chosen because “Changes” is apparently the 4th most popular album title.
As is the way, this new volume contains 16 fine bootlegs from 16 fine bootleggers. These contributors represent a fine International group with people from all over the snecking place. One guy is even from Texas (!). If you like the featured tracks, everyone on this collection has plenty more wonderful mashups available right now.
Thanks are owed to mixers like Voicedude, Jesus Cadena & Raheem D, who employ source artists like ELO, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, & plenty more. Wonderful Bootie DJ Lobsterdust provides the preview track “Ocean Flim” ( Billie Eilish vs Aphex Twin )
( www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzVNHod6IO0 ) . A fine representative of this comp, imho.
There’s also a one-track mix of the album for you to stream, & download. Now, you can hear the entire album at your convenience, no matter where you are. ( Except jail lol ;) )
( hearthis.at/vxmfxz7w/dj-useo-iob-mashup-changes-mix/ )
Many people write me about the IOB series, & they say “I love these.” & “What are mashups?” I always give the same answer, “Yes”. Now, it’s your turn. Listening to this collection will bring all into focus concerning bootleg matters. No doubt you’ll crave more. ( & big thanks to all the contributors! )
Have the day of good.

Anecdotes
Practical Jokes
• In Act 4 of Puccini’s La Bohème, Mimi lies dying of tuberculosis, and Musetta gives her a muff to keep her hands warm. Frederick Jägel once surprised the singer playing the role of Mimi. When she slipped her hands inside the muff, she discovered a warm Polish sausage.
• Comedian Brad Stein liked to sneak a couple of ketchup packets on board airplanes. After the plane had taken off, he would secretly squirt the ketchup below each ear, then point to his ears and ask the flight attendant, “Is this supposed to happen?”
• When comedian Jay Leno, host of The Tonight Show, was in high school, he used to sneak into the girls’ bathroom, pour water into the Kotex dispenser, then watch it expand and tear itself from the wall.
Prejudice
• British comedian Omid Djalili’s family came from Iran, but he is not a Muslim (he is a Baha’i); however, because of his genetics, he looks foreign to some of his fellow Brits, and that can lead to misunderstandings. For example, at Heathrow Airport, he looked anxiously at two men who seemed suspicious to him: they were muttering and bearded. He then looked at his fellow Brits, and he saw that they were anxiously looking at him. He says, “I shouted at people and said, ‘What are you looking at me for? Can’t you see those blokes over there?’ I had a real go at them, which made things worse. People just got upset and averted their eyes and I ended up muttering to myself.” This story is important because, as British journalist Ginny Dougary writes, “One slight problem with this is that his bearded brethren were doubtless just as innocent as Djalili. But it’s still a relief to hear a comedian having the guts to examine prejudice from his own perspective, only to demonstrate how he is also the victim of the same nervy thought poison.”
• Early in his career, Jewish comedian Milton Berle — then little more than an adolescent — worked on the same bill as Frank Fay, a comedian who was known for a lack of sensitivity. Because Frank Fay was annoyed that Milton was standing in the wings, he told the stage manager, “Get the little kike out of the entrance.” Shocked, Milton complained to his mother, who told him that probably Frank Fay had said “tyke,” not “kike.” Milton then listened carefully to what Frank Fay said the next time the two were close together, and when Frank Fay told the stage manager, “I told you to keep that little Jew bastard out of the wings,” Milton personally and immediately made sure that Frank Fay felt a strong urge to visit a hospital.
• Many years ago, the Seacrest Hotel of North Falmouth, Massachusetts, was restricted — meaning that it did not welcome Jews. When new managers took over the hotel, they decided to concoct a fictitious name for the new owner to show Jews that the hotel was no longer restricted. The name they decided on was Milton Q. Shapiro. Although “Milton Q. Shapiro” was completely fictitious and never existed, some would-be guests tried to bluff their way onto the premises when the hotel was filled to capacity by saying, “I’ll have you know, I am a very close friend of Milton Q. Shapiro. He was a classmate of mine in college and a fraternity brother besides.”
• In Chappell’s Show, comedian Dave Chappell attacked racism by playing such characters as a white supremacist who happened to be blind as well as black. Unfortunately, although most people recognized that racism was the real target of the subversive humor, some racists took it literally and congratulated Mr. Chappell for holding the same views that they did. Mr. Chappell was so shocked that he stopped making his TV show and stopped making the millions of dollars that went with making his TV show.
• Kathy Nijimy and Maureen Gaffney are actor-comedians who created “The Kathy and Mo Show: Parallel Lives.” They performed it at a lot of women’s music festivals, where they discovered that gay people are just as likely as straight people to make assumptions about other people. At the women’s music festivals, everyone assumed that Kathy and Mo were gay. In straight society, straights tend to assume that everyone is straight.

Habitat for Humanity
MacKenzie Scott
American philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity and dozens of its US affiliates, the homebuilding non-governmental organization said Tuesday.
The massive donation to be shared by Habitat for Humanity International and 84 affiliated US organizations will be used to increase the supply of affordable housing, particularly in communities of color, according to the group.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America last week announced that Scott donated $281 million to the US organization devoted to providing programs and support for young people.

Employees Stage Walkouts
Di$ney
Employees of the Walt Disney Co staged walkouts and social media campaigns on Tuesday to protest the company's response to Florida legislation that would limit classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity.
In a rare public demonstration of unrest, about 60 Disney employees gathered at a park outside of Los Angeles, where they wielded signs calling on Disney to "protect LGBTQ kids" and chanted "Disney say gay. We won't go away."
Disney has encountered internal criticism about its public stance toward the legislation, which critics call the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
The organizers called on Disney to cease campaign contributions to politicians supporting the Florida measure and to develop a plan to protect employees from such legislation. They also want Disney to halt construction in Florida, home of the company's flagship Walt Disney World theme park, until the state repeals the measure, which Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has indicated he will sign it into law. If so, it goes into effect July 1.

Cutting Jobs
BuzzFeed
BuzzFeed is shrinking and shifting the focus of its Pulitzer prize-winning news division as the digital media company, best known for its lighthearted lists and quizzes, strives to increase its profitability.
The New York-based company is offering voluntary buyouts in its high-profile, 100-person newsroom and some top editors are leaving. They include Mark Schoofs, the editor in chief of BuzzFeed News, and deputy editor in chief Tom Namako, who announced a move to NBC News Digital on Tuesday. Ariel Kaminer, the executive editor for investigations, is also leaving.
BuzzFeed News is unprofitable but has won awards, including its first Pulitzer last year, and its staff has been regularly poached by traditional news organizations. BuzzFeed spokesman Matt Mittenthal said about 35 people were eligible for the buyouts, but the company doesn’t expect all of them to take one.
Beyond the newsroom buyouts, the company also said it is cutting 1.7% of its staff. In a January filing with securities regulators, Buzzfeed said it had 1,524 U.S. and international employees, so the cuts would amount to roughly 25 people.

Dog Whistle Politics
Interracial Marriage
Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings have devolved into a festival of racist dog whistles, so much so that Republican senators who aren’t even on the Judiciary Committee are trying to get in on the action.
Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) went so far as to tell reporters on Tuesday that he doesn’t believe interracial marriage should be legal nationwide, before later walking back his comments, claiming he didn’t understand the question. The question, however, was pretty explicit.
The remarks came after Braun told reporters that he didn’t want a justice who was an “activist,” and that the court’s decision on Roe v. Wade was an example of such activism. Braun argued that such issues should be left up to the states and that striking down Roe would bring “it back to a neutral point, to where that issue should never have been federalized.” This prompted the question about whether he felt the same way about interracial marriage, which the court legalized in 1967, to which Braun, again, said yes.
Braun’s comments on Tuesday indicate he believes that states should have the right to prohibit Jackson and her husband, who is white, from being married.

Once Mistakenly Labeled A Hoax
Bizarre Kidnapping
A Harvard-educated former Marine was sentenced Friday for raping a California woman in a kidnapping plot so bizarre police once suspected it was a hoax.
Matthew Muller pleaded no contest to two counts of forcible rape, robbery, burglary and false imprisonment in connection with the Vallejo kidnapping of Denise Huskins, according to Law & Crime.
Vallejo Police had initially believed Huskins had faked her own kidnapping, publicly hinting that it had been a hoax due to the bizarre and sensational details of the case.
On Friday, Solano County prosecutor Sharon Henry called the initial police response a “travesty of justice” and admitted “mistakes were made,” KTVU reports.
It wasn’t until another similar home-invasion burglary in Alameda County on June 5, 2015 that investigators would discover the truth.

Yeast-Free
Pizza Dough
A materials scientist with a yeast allergy set out to make a yeast-free pizza dough that still rises like a classic Neapolitan pie.
Now, in a new paper published March 22 in the journal Physics of Fluids, he and his colleagues report that they've succeeded in their quest — although so far, the team has only baked disks of dough that measure about 0.4 inches (10 millimeters) in diameter and lack any sauce, cheese or other toppings.
These tiny, naked pizzas allegedly taste "exactly like the yeast pizza," Ernesto Di Maio, a materials scientist at the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA) and senior author of the study, told NPR. "We tried it, and it was nice and crusty and soft," he told Science.
A classic Neapolitan pizza dough contains flour; salt, for seasoning; water; yeast; and sugar, for the yeast to snack on. As the yeast gobbles up the sugar in the mix, the live microbes release carbon dioxide that gets trapped in the sticky dough, causing it to swell up with gas. When the pizza dough gets baked, the yeast dies off in the extreme heat of the oven but these bubbles of gas remain trapped in the crust, giving it a light, airy texture.
"The aim was to try to make the same texture that we love so much in pizza without a chemical agent," Rossana Pasquino, study co-author and UNINA chemical engineer, told Science.

Scientists Read Brain Waves
Mind’s Eye
Scientists have figured out a way to decipher the pictures people see in their mind when they imagine something.
Working with patients with epilepsy who already had electrodes fitted in the brains, researchers from Osaka University in Japan used electrocorticogram technology to capture participant’s brain waves while they were thinking about an image.
Participants were instructed to look at an image while mentally picturing a completely separate image from various categories, such as a “landscape” or “human face”.
The electrocorticogram technique allowed the researchers to detect patterns of electrical activity in the brain in real-time during the experiment, which they then used to determine what the person was imagining rather than what they were looking at.
In testing this hypothesis, the scientists were able to generate a clear distinction between the imagined image and the viewed image with remarkable accuracy.
