M Is FOR MASHUP - March 17th, 2021
More Spider’s Lockdown
By DJ Useo
The pandemic continues, but so do mashups. As proof of this,
The Original DJ Spider
( ) http://djspider.com/ has released a 2nd volume in his “Lockdown” series. Perhaps you remember
the first volume
( www.suprmchaos.com/bcEnt-Wed-052020.index.html ) The response to that first volume was overwhelmingly positive, so Spider set himself the tough task of repeating a perfect album.
As unlikely a task as that might seem, he did it! In my humble opinion, it passes the ’ten out of 10’ the first volume deserved, & expands it to the rare ‘eleven’. Along with his new album,
Spider
( www.mixcloud.com/djspideruk/ ) also made available a fantastic new site showcasing his past works including singles, videos, & album releases he’s appeared on. Over 400 mashups through the years! I find that impressive.
The link to access the free file for “Spider's Lockdown Mashup Album Vol.02” is
found here
( audioboots.org/Albums/SpiderLockdownV2/ ) while the thread discussing
the project is here
( audioboots.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/2278 ) Please feel free to leave comments. It’s a great way to motivate mixers to make more of what we already love.
“Spider's Lockdown Mashup Album Vol.02” features pairings like Jackson 5 vs Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd vs Georgio Moroder & Phil Oakey, & The Stylistics vs Europe, plus many more. Personally, I’m well into every track contained herein. I found that the mixes elevate all content beyond the original sources. It takes a highly skilled home producer to succeed to that level.

had this to say on the subject - “All new Mashups made during the 2nd & 3rd lockdown in UK.
The only track that's not a mashup is Gala - Free from Desire (Electro Swing Mix), which I thought I would add in case you might like it? My first remix really! There's a bit of a disco theme running throught this again, I Love Disco, obvs! Hope you like what you hear? feedback always welcome…”
This release is the 4th in the Audioboots Presents” series, with more to be posted soon. Tell your friends!

The new stove was delivered today, but they refused to install it - said the gas valve needed to be replaced first.
So, the new stove sits out on the patio, waiting for a visit from the gas company. Sigh.

Dead Sea Scrolls
Israeli archaeologists on Tuesday announced the discovery of dozens of Dead Sea Scroll fragments bearing a biblical text found in a desert cave and believed hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome nearly 1,900 years ago.
The fragments of parchment bear lines of Greek text from the books of Zechariah and Nahum and have been dated around the first century based on the writing style, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority. They are the first new scrolls found in archaeological excavations in the desert south of Jerusalem in 60 years.
The Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of Jewish texts found in desert caves in the West Bank near Qumran in the 1940s and 1950s, date from the third century B.C. to the first century A.D. They include the earliest known copies of biblical texts and documents outlining the beliefs of a little understood Jewish sect.
The roughly 80 new pieces are believed to belong to a set of parchment fragments found in a site in southern Israel known as the “Cave of Horror” — named for the 40 human skeletons found there during excavations in the 1960s — that also bear a Greek rendition of the Twelve Minor Prophets, a book in the Hebrew Bible. The cave is located in a remote canyon around 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Jerusalem.
The fragments are believed to have been part of a scroll stashed away in the cave during the Bar Kochba Revolt, an armed Jewish uprising against Rome during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, between 132 and 136. Coins struck by rebels and arrowheads found in other caves in the region also hail from that period.

Could the French bulldog become America’s favorite purebred pooch?
After riding a rocket ship to popularity over the last quarter-century, Frenchies came in second only to Labrador retrievers — the leaders for 30 straight years — in the American Kennel Club’s latest rankings, set to be released Wednesday. They reflect the relative numbers of purebreds, mainly puppies, that were added last year to the oldest U.S. dog registry.
Stocky and smush-faced, French bulldogs have their charms — at least in fans’ eyes — but also their limitations.
“They’re not the type of dog to go hiking with you,” AKC spokesperson Brandi Hunter says, “but if you want a dog that’s going to snuggle up with you, be cute, be adaptable, minimal grooming... that’s the kind of breed for you.”
After Labrador retrievers and French bulldogs, the top 10 breeds include German shepherds, golden retrievers, bulldogs, poodles, beagles, Rottweilers and German shorthaired pointers. Dachshunds made the top 10 for the first time since 2013.

Election Interference
2020
U.S. intelligence agencies Tuesday afternoon published their conclusions about foreign threats posed to the 2020 U.S. presidential election, concluding Russia and Iran were the most active foreign adversaries involved in attempting to influence the outcome.
According to the report, required by law and declassified by Biden administration Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines on Monday, other foreign actors, including Lebanese Hezbollah, Cuba and Venezuela, were also involved in trying to influence the elections, mounting smaller, less influential efforts to achieve their preferred political outcome.
Additionally, the agencies concluded with “high confidence” that China opted not to covertly or overtly attempt to directly influence the election, beyond traditional ongoing economic and lobbying activities.
However, the authors of the report noted a dissenting opinion from the senior intelligence officer tasked with mid- to long-term strategic analysis on cyber issues at the National Intelligence Council. The “minority view,” according to the report, is that China took “at least some steps to undermine President Trump’s reelection chances, primarily through social media and official public statements and media.”
The intelligence agencies concluded overall that, unlike in 2016, foreign adversaries did not attempt to “alter any technical aspect of the voting process,” from voting machines to voter rolls. According to the intelligence community, trying to infiltrate or tamper with technical voting equipment and infrastructure would be incredibly difficult to do “at scale,” given the vast network of individual state and local systems and the increased security preparations. However, the report also noted that, for a number of reasons, to include the increased availability of online digital tools and social media, more adversaries are attempting to influence U.S. elections and will likely continue to do so in the future.

Agrees To Slavery Reparations
Jesuits
‘Our shameful history of Jesuit slave holding in the United States has been taken off the dusty shelf, and it can never be put back’
As the debate about reparations continues, this week, a group of Jesuit priests has pledged to raise $100 million for the descendants of people enslaved by the Catholic order.
“This is an opportunity for Jesuits to begin a very serious process of truth and reconciliation,” said the Rev. Timothy P. Kesicki, President of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States. “Our shameful history of Jesuit slaveholding in the United States has been taken off the dusty shelf, and it can never be put back.”
“The money raised by the Jesuits will flow into a new foundation established in partnership with a group of descendants, who pressed for negotiations with the Jesuits after learning from a series of articles in the New York Times that their ancestors had been sold in 1838,” notes the report.
“The order relied on slave labor and slave sales for more than a century to sustain the clergy and to help finance the construction and the day-to-day operations of churches and schools, including the nation’s first Catholic institution of higher learning, the college now known as Georgetown University.”

Unknown Microbes Discovered
International Space Station
The menagerie of bacterial and fungal species living among us is ever growing - and this is no exception in low-gravity environments, such as the International Space Station (ISS).
Researchers from the United States and India working with NASA have now discovered four strains of bacteria living in different places in the ISS – three of which were, until now, completely unknown to science.
Three of the four strains were isolated back in 2015 and 2016 – one was found on an overhead panel of the ISS research stations, the second was found in the Cupola, the third was found on the surface of the dining table; the fourth was found in an old HEPA filter returned to Earth in 2011.
All four of the strains belong to a family of bacteria found in soil and freshwater; they are involved in nitrogen fixation, plant growth, and can help stop plant pathogens. Basically, good bacteria to have around if you're growing things.
One of the strains – the HEPA-filter find – was identified as a known species called Methylorubrum rhodesianum. The other three were sequenced and found to all belong to the same, previously unidentified species, and the strains were named IF7SW-B2T, IIF1SW-B5, and IIF4SW-B5.

Truffle Hunters
Iraq
"Here it is, the truffle, a blessing from God!" Zahra Buheir carefully digs out a desert truffle from the sandy earth and shows it off between her calloused fingers.
"Rain came, and then thunder, bringing truffles up to the surface," the 72-year-old said.
Braving the harsh weather of Iraq's southern desert, as well as left-behind land mines, Buheir and her family of seven have spent weeks hunting for the seasonal truffles that have provided them with an income for generations.
Fetching its hunters up to $7 a kilo this year, Iraq's desert truffle is cheaper than its rarer European cousins that can cost hundreds of dollars or more a kilo.
But with Iraq's economy in crisis, the local variety are a big help to Buheir and her family.
