M Is FOR MASHUP - March 16th, 2011
March Of The Mashups
By DJ Useo
The wonderful month of March, or 'Marchie' as I affectionately nickname it, has been a swell one to us mashup enjoyers, or 'fans' as you yankees say. :) Something about the passing proximity to last December has given the bootlegging community a big boost of inspiration. Checking out nearly any well-known mashers' site right now & you find proof of my statement. In addition, there's a great batch of new mashup albums for March. That's what I call the 'March of The Mashups'. Here's an easy-to-read round-up of mashup albums worth the time.
01 - 'The Best Of Sound-Unsound Top 10 Countdown 2' is just that. It collects all the mashups that made number one for the last 14 shows of the SUS podcast. All as selected by the moderators of the
Sound-Unsound mashup forum.
( www.sound-unsound.com ) There're mashups that will never leave your mp3 player on this sucker. Many a well-known mixer & of course, the songs you love, are on here, all given totally new existence through extensive deejay grafting. LeeDM101's 'You Dont Know The Reason' (The Editors vs Eric Prydz vs Oasis vs Depeche Mode) is worth this collection alone, but put it together with 13 other top flight mashes, & this collection delivers (& I helped! That cover I drew.). Check out David Bowie vs Rihanna, Lady Gaga vs The Raveonettes, Jason Derülo vs Kylie Minogue, & Gorillaz vs Depeche Mode & more by going
here, & clicking a few times -

02 - 'CULTURE SHOCK: A Titus Jones Mashup Album' 50 minutes. Over 50 artists. 3 decades worth of hits. That's how Titus describes it. He's dead right again! 14 great tracks it contains with all the best artists mixed exclusively by TJ himself. Listen for The Scorpions vs Rihanna, Dolly Parton vs Fountains of Wayne, Weezer vs Rick Ross, & Rick Astley vs Madonna! The word coming down the pike on Titus Jones is he's red hot & only starting. If you want solidly-mixed, inventive mashups, strike this fire while the iron's hot. Link

03 - Bynar's 'Music For The Mashes Vol. 1 & 2' brings you amazing blends from Greece's gift to mashup society - Bynar. Already firmly established in the world of bootlegs, Bynar flexes his mixing muscles on this new collection by slamming us around the ears with tunes so pleasing we thank him! Listen for Scissor Sisters vs Trent Reznor, Editors vs Conjure One, Black Sun Empire vs Depeche Mode, & Bloc Party vs The Cure, among seven more killer tracks. We're talking 2 discs here! I hope you have the bandwidth to hear this one. Find it on the inter-webbed nets

04 - Scotlands' Tizwarz is no newbie to you mashup audience people, having thrilled us continuously since 2004, or so. Now comes the big payoff with his newest collection, 'Tiz The Hits (2004-2008)'. I really enjoy his handling of hip hop, pop, & club tracks all at once. Many mashup faves of mine in the past have come from Tizwarz. Here's his tracklist of artists mashed onnit - 'Robbie Williams, Pharrell, Morchebba, Afroman, John Lennon, Nas, Ghostface Killa, Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Mims, Will Smith, Linkin Park, Crime Mob, Justin Timberlake, Spice Girls, ludacris, Slim Thug, Rihanna, JoJo, Snoop Dogg, Plump DJ's, Smitty, 50 Cent, Biz Markie, Lady Sov, Switch, Dizzie Rascal, C-Side, Nina Sky, Bone Thugs And Harmony, Nicole Scherzinger, Hot Dollar, Mel C, Lolleatta Holloway, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Kelly Rowland, Eric B And Rakim, The Streets, UKG, J Lo, Fantasia, Da Alliance, Monrose, Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, DJ Kahled, Concrete Boyz, PM, Noelz, Lil Meta, Huey, Sean Kingston, Lil Mama, Lil Wayne, and Peach Candy.'

For the last ten years audiences have watched young wizards learn to negotiate the supernatural in a rigid, hierarchical academy for the magically gifted. Joss Whedon's series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, set first in a California public high school, later in a university-offers a very different view of instruction in the dark arts, one that not only comports with Americans' suspicion of formal education and preference for pragmatic, on-the-job instruction but also reflects its creator's pessimistic view of the perfectibility of culture.

Ari Up: Obituary (Telegraph, from October 2010)
Though she was at the heart of the chaotic punk scene, Ari Up was single minded: "I always stuck to my own rules. I didn't do any drugs, or drink. I stuck to my age in my mind." The band was influenced by the reggae bass lines introduced to them by manager Don Letts, as much as punk. The Slits' bouncing, chaotic songs were then championed by the DJ John Peel, who described their live appearances on his radio show as "mesmerising". "Their inability to play, coupled with their determination to play," he said, "was magnificent."

A Historic Disaster For Disney
"Mars Needs Moms"
In the weeks leading up to the release of "Mars Needs Moms" last Friday, Disney knew interest in the film was tepid at best. But no one was prepared for such a disastrous box office wipeout.
From a financial standpoint, "Mars" could be one of the biggest write-offs in modern Hollywood history.
The motion-capture animated film cost $150 million to produce but earned only $6.9 million in its debut at the domestic box office, the 12th worst opening of all time for a movie released in more than 3,000 theaters and one of the lowest openings for a major 3D release.
The price tag doesn't include a hefty marketing bill. All told, Disney has likely invested $200 million or more in the picture, made by Robert Zemeckis' now-shuttered ImageMovers Digital.
The chances of recovery are slim. Many times, a movie performing poorly in the U.S. can make up ground at the international box office. "Mars," however, did just as badly in its overseas debut, grossing a paltry $2.1 million from 14 countries (about 25% of all territories).

Recruit Guest Vocalists
INXS
Thirteen years after the premature death of their frontman, Australian rockers INXS still have not settled on a full-fledged replacement.
But the five members of the most successful homegrown rock act from Down Under are working with an assortment of singers in the meantime.
In the first few years after Michael Hutchence accidentally hanged himself in a Sydney hotel room in 1997, they teamed with the likes of Terence Trent D'Arby and local heroes Jimmy Barnes and Jon Stevens for various shows.
Then they went the American reality-TV show route, ending up with an unknown Canadian, J.D. Fortune, who remains their first choice on the concert circuit.
They have just activated another back-up plan, recruiting a host of international names for a new album boasting sharply reworked versions of their classic songs.

Slipknot
Slipknot have decided to stay "within the family" to find a touring replacement for bassist Paul Gray, who died of an accidental overdose last May.
Donnie Steele, an original guitarist for the metal band in 1995-1996, will fill in for Gray for Slipknot's upcoming 2011 shows, the band said on its website. Steele, now 39, reportedly quit the nascent band because of his Christian beliefs.
"Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family," the band explained in a statement.
Gray, 38, was found dead of an overdose of morphine and fentanyl in an Iowa hotel. Days later, his eight bandmates appeared in public for the first time without their signature masks to pay tribute to him at a news conference.

James Taylor
James Taylor has broken his leg and injured his shoulder during a ski vacation with his family in Utah.
In an e-mail, an assistant for the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter confirms a report in Tuesday's Boston Globe that Taylor fractured his leg Monday on the first day of the vacation in Utah. The e-mail released no further details.
The report says Taylor had doctors fashion a splint that would allow him to keep skiing.

Cancels Concerts Until 2012
Seiji Ozawa
Health problems have forced the celebrated Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, who is suffering from cancer of the oesophagus, to cancel appearances until January next year, he says in an interview with an Austrian newspaper due to appear Tuesday.
"I hope we shall soon be back on our feet," he told the daily newspaper Oesterreich, speaking by telephone from his home near Tokyo after living through the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear alert.
Ozawa, 75, was due to conduct five concerts in March in Japan and five more abroad: two at Carnegie Hall in New York, two in Paris and one in Vienna.
He made a brief return to the concert hall in September last year and again in December before cancelling all his appearances to convalesce after an operation in mid-January for a lumbar hernia.
He had planned to make his return at Matsumoto in central Japan for the Saito Kinen Festival, but will have to wait until January 2012 at the earliest as result of a pulmonary infection and a hernia.

Parks Board
Baba Booey
A longtime member of Howard Stern's on-air crew has been appointed to the parks advisory board of an affluent Connecticut town.
The man known as Baba Booey to fans won approval to the board at a town meeting Monday in Greenwich. The 119-64 vote ended two months of contentious debate on the issue.
Those opposed to the appointment have cited Stern's low-brow, often misogynistic brand of humor.
Baba Booey's real name is Gary Dell'Abate. He's the producer of Stern's Sirius Satellite Radio show. Dell'Abate's supporters separated his professional life from his personal life, saying he is a family man and 16-year resident who coached local youth sports.

Calif Medical Board Reprimands
Conrad Murray
The doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death has received a public letter of reprimand from the Medical Board of California acknowledging actions taken against him in Nevada over child support.
California board spokeswoman Jennifer Simoes said such letters are routine to notify the public of an action against a doctor's license in another state.
The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners reprimanded Dr. Conrad Murray in December for failing to disclose on his 2007 and 2009 license renewal applications that he was behind on child support payments in California.
Murray continues to practice in Nevada, but his California medical license is suspended pending his criminal trial.

glenn beck
US celebrities and media blasted right-wing radio host and television presenter Glenn Beck for calling the monster quake that rocked Japan last week a message from God.
In a rambling presentation on his radio show on Monday, Beck said God may have caused the catastrophe in Japan because he was angry with mankind, and warned people to change their ways.
"What God does is God's business, I have no idea. But I'll tell you this: whether you call it Gaia or whether you call it Jesus -- there's a message being sent. And that is, 'Hey, you know that stuff we're doing? Not really working out real well. Maybe we should stop doing some of it,'" Beck said.
He suggested that God could be appeased -- and presumably convinced to not cause any more earthquakes -- if people followed the biblical Ten Commandments.

Erotic Scandal
Bolshoi Ballet
Russia's famed Bolshoi ballet troupe has named the company's long-standing soloist Yan Godovsky as its new director, after an erotic picture scandal engulfed his predecessor.
Last week, an anonymous letter was sent out to hundreds of electronic addresses with a link to a website displaying erotic photographs of a person resembling Gennady Yanin, the ballet's previous director, according to the Russian daily Izvestia.
Godovsky, the Bolshoi's leading soloist in his 18th season, will hold the position until the end of the 2011 season.
The hiring system of the Bolshoi only allows one-season contracts, which can later be extended or given to a replacement. "It is unexpected for me. I kept refusing, but they kept asking me to take the position," Godovsky told Reuters, laughing. "It's definitely an upgrade for me."

Denies Attempt To Bribe Lab Worker
Don Francisco
Chilean talk show host Mario Kreutzberger denied Tuesday that he had anything to do with an alleged attempt to bribe a laboratory worker into altering the DNA results in his paternity case.
"I've never bribed anybody," said Kreutzberger, better known as Don Francisco, host of the Sabado Gigante show.
Kreutzberger, 70, has suspended the popular show, broadcast from Miami all over the Spanish-speaking world, in order to defend himself in court in Chile. He spoke briefly on arrival at the airport and said he couldn't take questions until he's had a chance to speak with the authorities involved.
Both Kreutzberger and a 43-year-old Chilean man who claims to be his son have submitted to court-ordered DNA tests by Chile's Medical Legal Service, which is respected for its DNA work in human rights cases.
The service filed a criminal complaint two weeks ago alleging that biochemist Luis Velazquez was offered a bribe to switch or alter Kreutzberger's DNA.

He will also perform at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, Conn., and at Boston's Agganis Arena on April 12.

Huge Lobster
One of the biggest and oldest lobsters ever caught in Britain has been saved from the pot and will live out the rest of its long life in an aquarium.
The massive crustacean measures close to one metre (3 feet) in length and weighs more than 4 kg (9 lb).
"He's a fantastic specimen and by his size alone he has got to be at least 50 years old," said Lindsay Holloway of the Blue Reef aquarium in Portsmouth, where the lobster now lives.
The lobster was caught in around 14 feet of water by a compassionate angler fishing for sole in Bracklesham Bay, off the coast of West Sussex.
