Trump only wants advisors who treat him like a tinpot dictator demands.
Joe Bob Briggs: First Amendment 101 (Taki's Magazine)
The standard of civic success is this: The speaker finishes his speech and everybody who wants to hear him can hear him. If there are people present who do not want to hear his speech, or do not want others to hear his speech, and if those people take any action to make sure he can't be heard, they need to be carted away.
Measuring a Pothole Goes Wrong (Neatorama)
Everyone hates potholes, and you want the one that you have to drive over to be repaired. But with limited funds, government entities have to prioritize. Only the worst ones get fixed. Cheshire West and Chester Council is the Twitter account for the body of government responsible for local road repair in that area of the UK. They posted a now-deleted Tweet explaining how they determine which potholes will be fixed first. They should have examined the picture a little closer before they made it available to the public.
Joe Bob Briggs: "Your Honor, the President Is Acting Like He's in Charge and We Want It Stopped" (Taki's Magazine)
Let's start with the simplest example-his authority to fire the head of the FBI. The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is not the highest law-enforcement official in the land. The president is. The Bureau is 100 percent within the executive branch. If the president wants to get personally involved in any investigation, that's his prerogative.
Joe Bob Briggs: Men of Bad Will (Taki's Magazine)
Granted, the Catholics consider many things heresies, but this particular one is caused by a centuries-long dispute about a single letter in the text. Angels singing about God's good will toward all men is, they say, a misreading of the last line. It should read instead, "Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace and good will to those He favors."

Joe Bob Briggs: Explicating the Bible of Texas (Taki's Magazine)
Texas remains the only state that has adopted bilingualism so thoroughly that some cities have Spanish media and use Spanish at public meetings. The cattleman's code, the rebel spirit, and multiculturalism found their center in a region many would consider least likely to succeed, and George Stevens saw that long before anyone else.

Marc's Guide to Curing Cancer
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

Spokesman Quits
ICE
A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Francisco resigned over the Trump administration's handling of a recent immigrant raid in the Bay Area.
James Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle late Monday that administration officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump, grossly exaggerated the number of undocumented immigrants who avoided arrest after Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the public days before the raid began on Feb. 25.
"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts," Schwab said. "I asked them to change the information. I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that. Then I took some time and I quit."
Schwab added that even if there had been no prior warning about the raid, "we were not ever going to be able to capture 100 percent of the target list."
ICE said 232 people were arrested in the sweep, but claimed the number could have been higher.

Alex Jones Sued
Charlottesville
A former State Department official who became the target of harassment after posting a video showing the car attack during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville sued right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and others Tuesday.
Brennan Gilmore, who attended the August rally as a counterprotester, witnessed the attack that killed Heather Heyer and injured dozens more. He posted a video to Twitter, which went viral, and was interviewed by national media outlets. Soon after, Jones, his website Infowars and the other defendants started spreading conspiracy theories about him, which led to threats against Gilmore and his family, the complaint alleged.
"Supporters of the alt-right and the 'Unite the Right rally,' including the defendants, created a new identity for Mr. Gilmore - the organizer and orchestrator of (accused driver James) Fields' attack and a traitor to the United States," the lawsuit said.
Gilmore suffered from hate mail and death threats, hacking attempts and in-person harassment, the lawsuit said. Gilmore and his parents' known addresses were posted online, prompting local law enforcement to patrol his parents' home.
The lawsuit, which seeks a jury trial and damages to compensate Gilmore as well as punitive damages, was filed in federal court in Charlottesville. Georgetown Law's Civil Rights Clinic is representing Gilmore, who said in an interview with The Associated Press that he "absolutely" would not consider settling the suit and that any monetary damages are a secondary goal.

Declassified Video
Navy Fighter Pilots
A newly declassified video obtained by a research company shows a fast-moving UFO off the East Coast as it was tracked by two U.S. Navy pilots in 2015.
It's unclear what the object is, and the pilots are heard laughing and shouting as they attempt to track it.
"Wow! What is that, man?" one of the pilots says in the video. "Look at that flying!"
The footage was released late last week by To The Stars Academy Of Arts And Science, a private research and media firm, which also provided analysis of the clip.
To The Stars Academy Of Arts And Science was founded by Tom DeLonge, the rock star formerly of Blink 182 and currently in the band Angels & Airwaves. Other co-founders include Jim Semivan, formerly a senior intelligence member of the CIA, and Hal Puthoff, who has advised NASA and the Defense Department.

Ivanka
Ivanka Trump's permanent government security clearance seems to be twisting in the wind, like her husband's. That may be because she continues pulling in $1.5 million a year from the family business, the Trump Organization, even as she travels internationally representing the U.S. as a White House adviser, McClatchy reports.
Her dual role as adviser to the president and private business executive raises red flags concerning conflicts of interest. Ethics experts say the conflict raises the possibility that public policy could be affected by what works best for Trump's bottom line, or that countries may offer business deals in exchange for access and favored treatment by the U.S. government.
Early in her father's presidency, the first daughter dined with Chinese President Xi Jinping at her father's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on the same day China approved three new trademarks for Ivanka Trump Marks LLC.
Ivanka Trump stepped aside as vice president of companies in the Trump Organization, yet she continues to be an owner. According to her financial disclosure filing, she reported that she receives $1.5 million annually from three companies within the Trump Organization, McClatchy reported. The payments included $800,000 from TTT Consulting, $600,000 from TTT Venture, and $100,000 from T International Reality.
Donald Trump, along with Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner, have failed to divest themselves from their private businesses, radically breaking with tradition. They have stepped aside from day-to-day management of their companies, but maintain financial ties and refuse to release tax returns that could reveal conflicts of interest.

Secret Prisons
Gina Haspel, the veteran CIA undercover officer President Donald Trump picked on Tuesday to head the agency, is supported by many in the U.S. intelligence community but has faced criticism for overseeing a secret CIA prison in Thailand where detainees were tortured.
Intelligence officers who served with her, and congressional officials said that in 2002, during Republican President George W. Bush's administration, she was responsible for the secret prison code-named "Cat's Eye." Two suspected members of the al Qaeda militant group were subjected to waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques at the facility.
Three years later, still during Bush's presidency, she carried out an order to destroy videotapes of the waterboarding, which simulates drowning and is considered a form of torture, according to those people.
Haspel is generally held in high regard at the CIA, working as deputy director under Mike Pompeo, whom Trump nominated to be the next secretary of state on Tuesday after firing Rex Tillerson from the post.
If confirmed by the Senate, Haspel would become the first woman to lead the Central Intelligence Agency. But she could face close scrutiny in her confirmation hearings over her involvement in "black site" facilities, so called because their existence is unacknowledged by the U.S. government.

Body Battle Won By Grandson
Manson
A grandson of cult leader Charles Manson won the bizarre California court battle Monday over the killer's body.
Kern County Superior Court Commissioner Alisa Knight ruled that Jason Freeman can retrieve Manson's remains, which have been on ice in the Bakersfield morgue since he died in November.
Freeman didn't immediately comment but previously said he would cremate and spread the ashes of Manson and put to rest "this so-called monster, this historical figure that shouldn't have been blown up as big as it was for all these years."
The fight over his corpse devolved into a circus of sorts with friends filing competing wills purportedly signed by the infamous inmate while kin began to come out of the woodwork to also stake a claim to the killer's body and an estate that could include lucrative rights to songs Manson wrote or to license his image and other material.
While the decision clears the way for Manson to be cremated or buried, the battle for the body foreshadows what lies ahead as the same competing camps wrestle for control of the estate.

In Memory
Hubert de Givenchy
French couturier Hubert de Givenchy, a pioneer of ready-to-wear who designed Audrey Hepburn's little black dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," has died at 91.
The house of Givenchy paid homage to its founder in a statement as "a major personality of the world of French haute couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century."
Along with Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and mentor Cristobal Balenciaga, Givenchy was part of the elite cadre of Paris-based designers who redefined fashion after World War II.
A towering man of elegance and impeccable manners, he forged close friendships with his famous clients, from Hollywood screen sirens of the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Lauren Bacall to women of state, including Jackie Kennedy and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Born into an aristocratic family in the provincial city of Beauvais on Feb. 21, 1927, Givenchy struck out for Paris in his late teens.
Couturier Jacques Fath hired Givenchy on the strength of his sketches. He spent two years learning the basics of fashion design, from sketching to cutting and fitting haute couture styles.
His debut collection ushered in the concept of separates - tops and bottoms that could be mixed and matched, as opposed to head-to-toe looks that were the norm among Paris couture purveyors.
But the client whose name would become almost synonymous with the house was Audrey Hepburn, whom he met in 1953, when he dressed her for the romantic comedy "Sabrina."
Legend has it that Givenchy - told only that Mademoiselle Hepburn would be coming in for a fitting - was expecting the grand Katharine Hepburn. Instead, the diminutive Audrey showed up, dressed in cigarette pants, a T-shirt and sandals.
Thus began a decades-long friendship that saw Givenchy dress the star in nearly a dozen films, including the 1961 hit "Breakfast at Tiffany's." The sleeveless black evening gown she wore in the movie, complete with rows of pearls, elbow-length gloves and oversized shades, would end up becoming Givenchy's most famous look.
Aiming to reach a wider market, Givenchy launched a line of upscale ready-to-wear and accessories in the 1960s. Its commercial success soon enabled him to buy out his backers, making him one of only a handful of Paris couturiers to own their own label outright.
Givenchy retired in 1995, and was succeeded by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, Italy's Riccardo Tisci and its current chief designer, Clare Waight Keller, the first woman in the role.
Givenchy is survived by his companion, French couturier Philippe Venet.
