M Is FOR MASHUP - March 14th, 2012
Today's Random Selection Of Mashups
By DJ Useo
Whoah! The flood of new bootleg mashup mixes is on! Lately I just can't keep up with the constant cool tracks you'd like if you heard them. I see there's lots of new names posting stuff. That's always a good thing 'cuz it brings lots of new energy to the scene in general. Even if a new mixer needs more experience, just having them participate gives stimulis to any listeners. You never know for sure if you'll feel challenged or assured when you hear some new mixers work. One of the most influential & new of the current crop, Madeon http://www.myspace.com/madeon , is totally blowing everyone away. Are there other upcoming mixers posting today who can give good mix satisfaction?Let's try a few random posts around the net & see what we find.
01 - Interestingly, & completely at random, I assure you, the first mashup by a newbie I found was 'Icarus' Last Dance' (David Austin's V12 Mix) ( Madeon vs Labrinth) by David Austin. Right away it sounded beautiful. The added vocals were mixed wonderfully. The balance & production sound is overwhelmingly fine. I left this mix thinking I'll make sure to look for more by David Austin. First track I ever heard by him, yet I hear a lot of the new mashups.

02 - Dr. Brixx has a new track called 'Turn That Damn Name On' (Guetta/BonJovi/Paramore/AllTimeLow). It has a fine sound & good appeal through the mixing. The mix enchants you quickly & before you know it, it's over & you want another listen. Dr. Brixx also appears to have it going on as far as his mix talents. There's no download but you can
stream it here
( soundcloud.com/doctor-brixx/turn-that-damn-name-on )
03 - DJ B Reul has a fun new mashup called 'Loca Bus Short' (Sak Noel vs The Venga Boys). It's got lively, yet easy-going electro music with easy to comprehend & fun lyrics. I could play this track for just about anyone & have a good response. It's ok for the mainstream crowd & I think the more avant garde types would still like it. This one carves a wide swath of listeners. Count me in for more tracks by DJ B Reul.

04 - DJ Em-Tee is next with his mashup 'F#ck School vs Teardrop' (Avicii, Nicky Romero & Coldplay) does a similar path musically by employing very popular artists, yet mixing them in such a fashion as to achieve a new mix bullet! The combined effect of the source tracks, alongside some warm, solid production sound gives large satisfaction. Again, with a chuckle, I confess I'd enjoy more mashups from DJ EM-Tee.
Here's them here

05 - Ericcccc states that he was inspired by Madonna's performance in the recent Super Bowl to mix up 'Sexy Music Anthem' (LMFAO vs Madonna). Well, it's good fortune for us as this mix is super fine for listening. A way cool old skool double feel, yet it's new. Good solid sound propels it hard. I got'ta say no to the short length though. It should easily be twice as long.
See what you think here

Well, we found out that there's a massive amount of upcoming mashup talent. They have big skills & are able to mix with modern artists & supply hit satisfaction. There's lots more new mixers out there, of course, & apparently most of them are on Soundcloud.com. Lol. Drop me a line if you find a particular artist or track you want me to mention here.

Well the numbers for my new double ABC mashup single are good, but I've not heard any reply. Not a one. Of course I played them for peeps before I even considered releasing them, & heard nice words. I love 'em both, but that's a given when I go as far as to release a mashup. The first is '
Be Near Doors' (Doors vs ABC). Listen for bits of the Doors singing 'crystal ship' & 'take it as it comes' over instrumental of ABC.
( ) http://www.groovytimewithdjuseo.blogspot.com/2012/03/be-near-doors-doors-vs-abc.html>
The other mix is called 'How To Be A Divine Hammer' (ABC vs The Breeders). It has ABC singing over rock music from the Breeders. It sure would be nice iffen one'a youse mugs would drop me a line & offer your response to the two ABC mixes. You might have fun.

National Coalition Against Censorship: NCAC, ABFFE Protest PayPal Ban on Erotic Material
Today, NCAC joined American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) to protest a threat by the online payment processor PayPal to close the accounts of online booksellers who sell works that include descriptions of rape, incest and bestiality. In a letter to PayPal's parent company, eBay, ABFFE and NCAC said the company's threat would have a chilling effect on the sale of books that adults have a legal right to buy.

It is a shame that PayPal hasn't dealt with the issue the same way Visa has, by not taking a stance on content other than on the point of legality. Writing about bestiality or incest is not, in itself, illegal. Some works may cross a line into illegality, but whether they do is something that the judicial process, in full public sight, should discuss. It is not something to be dealt with by fuzzy terms of service that result in the chilling of free speech.

Backtracks
PayPal
PayPal, the online payment service owned by eBay Inc, is backtracking on its policy against processing sales of e-books containing themes of rape, bestiality or incest after protests from authors and anti-censorship activist groups.
PayPal's new policy will focus only on e-books that contain potentially illegal images, not e-books that are limited to just text, spokesman Anuj Nayar said on Tuesday. The service will still refuse, however, to process payments for text-only e-books containing child pornography themes.
The revised policy will also focus on individual books, rather than entire classes of books, he added. E-book sellers will be notified if specific books violate PayPal's policy, and the company is working on a process through which authors and distributors can challenge such notifications, the spokesman said.
"This is going to be a major victory for writers, readers and free speech," said Mark Coker, founder of e-book distributor Smashwords. "They are going to build a protective moat around legal fiction."
PayPal's original policy was criticized by groups, including the Authors Guild and the National Coalition Against Censorship, which voiced concern that banks and payment companies may be exerting too much control over what books can be written, published and read.

Quiet Visit To Volatile Sudan
George Clooney
Actor and human rights activist George Clooney made a quiet visit to a volatile border region between Sudan and South Sudan last week ahead of testimony he's giving before a U.S. Senate committee on Wednesday.
Clooney made the dangerous crossing from South Sudan into Sudan's Nuba Mountains region, Jonathan Hutson, a spokesman for the anti-genocide group the Enough Project, said Tuesday. Clooney saw burned-out villages and met with residents forced to seek shelter in caves because of aerial attacks by Sudan's military.
Violence has flared along the Sudan-South Sudan border since South Sudan seceded last year, and some experts worry the conflict could grow. South Sudan shut down its oil industry this year after accusing Sudan of stealing its oil.
Wednesday's hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will examine the oil dispute and the limited access aid groups are being given to Sudan's southern regions. Aid experts say people who live in Sudan's Nuba Mountains will soon face a hunger crisis because they haven't been able to plant crops amid fear of attacks from Sudan.

GOP Makes Me 'Weep For Humanity'
Woody Harrelson
Woody Harrelson has played a porn publisher in the "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and a serial killer in "Natural Born Killers," so portraying a political consultant in HBO's "Game Change" was not too much of a stretch.
How did Harrelson, whose politics lean toward marijuana law reform, handle the role of Republican hard-charger?
"I wouldn't imagine myself wanting to have anything to do with the guy," he told Men's Journal, "but I really found myself liking him. He's a political animal, but I feel like he's an idealist and not bogged down in all the bullshit.
Harrelson was also asked if making "Game Change" altered his view of Republicans.
"Fuck, no! The shit those people say just makes me weep for humanity!"

Guesting On 'Big Bang Theory'
Stephen Hawking
"The Big Bang Theory" is getting a visit from Stephen Hawking.
The renowned theoretical physicist will guest-star on the April 5 episode of the CBS comedy, the network said Monday. In the cameo, Hawking visits uber-geek Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) at work "to share his beautiful mind with his most ardent admirer," according to CBS.
Executive producer Bill Prady said that having Hawking on the show had long been a goal, though it seemed unattainable.
When people would ask us who a 'dream guest star' for the show would be, we would always joke and say Stephen Hawking - knowing that it was a long shot of astronomical proportions," Prady said. "In fact, we're not exactly sure how we got him. It's the kind of mystery that could only be understood by, say, a Stephen Hawking."

Most Watched HBO Original Movie In 8 Years
'Game Change'
HBO's "Game Change," the controversial movie about John McCain and Sarah Palin's 2008 presidential campaign, drew 2.1 million viewers on Saturday-the largest audience for an original movie on the cable network in eight years. Counting repeats, the film, starring Julianne Moore as Palin and Ed Harris as McCain, drew a total of 3.6 million viewers for HBO. "Something the Lord Made," starring Alan Rickman and Mos Def, drew 2.6 million for HBO in May 2004.
"Game Change," based on the book by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, got a promotional boost from Palin herself when she denounced it as manipulative and biased.
Woody Harrelson, who portrayed campaign consultant Steve Schmidt, told Men's Journal that while the Republican party "makes me weep for humanity," he grew to respect Schmidt during the shoot.

MPAA Ratings Suck
'Bully'
More Hollywood heavyweights are calling for a lower rating on the documentary "Bully."
The Weinstein Co. says Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees are supporting the film, which will be released March 30.
Lee Hirsch's documentary on bullying in American schools has been rated R, which restricts kids under 17 from seeing it without an adult.
Distributors appealed the decision, but it was upheld by the Motion Picture Association of America, which oversees ratings.
That prompted a Michigan teenager to start an online petition calling for a lower rating so more young people can see the film. She met delivered 200,000 signatures to the MPAA, but the group declined to change the rating.

Brit Faces Extradition
Richard O'Dwyer
Britain's Home Secretary has backed a decision to extradite to the United States a British student who ran a website allowing users to access films and TV shows illegally, the Home Office said on Tuesday.
Richard O'Dwyer is wanted by U.S. authorities for copyright infringement offences in connection with his TVShack website, which did not host any illegal content but provided links to other online sites where it could be accessed.
In a London court hearing in January, his lawyers argued that by linking to other websites, he had done nothing more than the likes of Google or Yahoo.
However, a judge rejected his argument and Home Secretary Theresa May has upheld the decision to extradite the 23-year-old.
Campaigners argue O'Dwyer's is the latest in a series of cases that demonstrate Britain's extradition rules with the United States are lopsided, allowing suspects to be extradited without criminal charges from British authorities.

#1 Girl Arrested, Again
Rupert
Rebekah Brooks, a former editor and close confidante of Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate), was arrested for a second time on Tuesday in a phone-hacking scandal that has rocked the British establishment and embarrassed Prime Minister David Cameron.
A source familiar with the situation said Brooks and her husband Charlie, a close friend of Cameron, were detained by police at dawn and had been taken for questioning at separate police stations.
They were held on suspicion of conspiring to pervert the course of justice in the long-running saga and were among six people arrested in coordinated raids across Britain.
The 43-year-old former News of the World editor, instantly recognizable for her long red hair, was arrested in July over different allegations but only after she arrived at a London police station by appointment.
"The coordinated arrests were made between approximately 0500 and 0700 this morning," the police said. "A number of addresses connected to the arrests are being searched."

Pigboy
Republican party spokesman Rush Limbaugh (R-Viagra-Dependent) chided the National Organization for Women and its president, Terry O'Neill, on his syndicated radio show on Tuesday, over comments she made at the group's convention in New Orleans.
Limbaugh, whose show has lost dozens of advertisers in the fallout over his comments about Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke, then played a clip from O'Neill's speech on Saturday at the NOW convention.
"Right now it really seems like we've got this godsend named Rush Limbaugh who has dropped this thing in our lap," O'Neill said. "Which is just wonderful. But the road ahead is really not gonna be completely rosy. We've got to be very clear on what the challenges are, and very clear about how we can move our own agenda forward in the current political climate."
"I thought they were outraged," Limbaugh said. "I thought they were offended. I thought it was the worst thing they ever heard anybody say. [Now] it's 'wonderful.' What a political opportunity."
Limbaugh, who referred to NOW members as "Nags," continued: "A godsend! The Nags called me a godsend. So not only am I God's gift to Obama, I'm God's gift to women."

Judge Pares Down Lawsuit
Nicollette Sheridan
A judge on Tuesday pared down Nicollette Sheridan's wrongful termination case by ruling that jurors won't consider a battery claim against her boss on TV's "Desperate Housewives."
The verdict will now focus solely on whether jurors believe Sheridan was fired from the show because she complained about an on-set dispute with series creator Marc Cherry.
Sheridan's attorney Mark Baute said it will simplify deliberations while allowing his client to recoup punitive damages if she wins.
Testimony in the case ended Tuesday after nine days. The jury was getting instructions before closing arguments began.

Rock Hall Reunion Threatened
Guns N' Roses
Will Guns N' Roses reunite for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Behind his dark glasses, hat and big hair, the group's former guitarist Slash is staying noncommittal on the subject.
The million-selling hard rock group enters the Rock Hall in Cleveland on April 14, an event at which honored acts often perform as part of the celebration.
But the group's original lineup fell apart in 1996, so fans hoping to see the band reunite may be disappointed.
Slash says of the induction: "It's definitely an honor and I have no idea what's going to happen on that day."

Fired By Discovery Channel
Bear Grylls
Bear Grylls, the British adventurer and star of survival show "Man vs. Wild", has been fired by U.S. cable television network Discovery Channel in a contract dispute.
Grylls, 37, who was dropped into hostile places to survive by eating insects, wading rapids and drinking his urine, has hosted the TV show since 2006, becoming a celebrity around the world.
But Discovery Channel said on Tuesday that "due to a continuing contractual dispute with Bear Grylls, Discovery has terminated all current productions with him."
A spokesman for Grylls said he and Discovery had been unable to reach agreement on new programming and had parted ways.

CNN Lifts Suspension
Roland Martin
Roland Martin has been reinstated at CNN, after a month-long time-out springing from his offensive tweets during this year's Super Bowl.
Martin, who drew the scorn of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and others, has had his suspension lifted at CNN, the cable news network told TheWrap. Martin was suspended on February 8. At the time, CNN called Martin's tweet "regrettable and offensive."
During the Super Bowl on February 5, Martin urged physical violence against male viewers who enjoyed David Beckham's underwear ad for H&M.
In an effort to patch things up, Martin met with GLAAD's Herndon Graddick on February 14.

Avoids "Dangerous" Canada
Cheneybot
After what happened in Vancouver when the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup, who can blame Dick Cheney for canceling on his northern neighbors?
The former vice president had planned to speak April 24 in Toronto. However, recovered memories of September protests convinced Cheney that "personal safety" was at stake in Canada, and both he and daughter Elizabeth will stay on the safer side of the border.
"On the advice of security, they were worried that quite simply Canada is just not a friendly country to them," said Ryan Ruppert, the president of the promotions company that booked Cheney for the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. "God forbid there was ever an emergency" he added, referring to Cheney's heart problems. Cheney, a former heavy smoker, relies on a battery-powered heart pump and has no pulse.
Not that Cheney isn't used to protests in his backyard. His book tour for "In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir" has had Amnesty International on his back in D.C. and New York City, Code Pink in San Francisco, Illinois Coalition Against Torture in Chicago, former vets at the Nixon Library in Southern California.

HBO Suspends Filming With Horses
'Luck'
A horse was injured and euthanized Tuesday during production of the cable television racetrack drama "Luck," the third death in connection with the series, and HBO agreed to suspend filming with horses while the accident is investigated.
The humane group that oversees Hollywood productions had issued an immediate demand "that all production involving horses shut down."
The animal was being led to a Santa Anita Park racetrack stable by a groom when it reared and fell back Tuesday morning, suffering a head injury, according to HBO. The horse was euthanized at the track in suburban Arcadia, where "Luck" is filming its second season.
Dr. Rick Arthur, medical director of the state racing board, said such injuries occur in stable areas every year and are more common than thought. A necropsy will be conducted, he said, which is routine with all fatalities at racing board enclosures.

Fires Back At Studio
Puzo Family
The estate of "The Godfather" author Mario Puzo has fired back at movie studio Paramount Pictures with a $10 million counterclaim over Paramount's attempts to block a new book in the Mafia saga.
Lawyers for the estate of Puzo also sought to end Paramount's rights to the 1969 best-seller, which went on to become an Oscar-winning movie released by the studio.
"Mario Puzo brought vast wealth to Paramount at a time when they desperately needed it. Now that he's gone, Paramount's trying to deprive his children of the rights he specifically reserved," Bertram Fields, an attorney for the Puzo family, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Paramount filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court in February that accused Puzo's heirs of approving sequels to "The Godfather" without the studio's permission and in violation of earlier agreements.

Neighbors Fret About Plan
'Field of Dreams'
Should we build it, and would they come?
Those are the questions being debated in the Iowa town where the "Field of Dreams" movie was filmed as it considers a $38 million proposal to turn the farmland around the famous cornfield diamond into one of the nation's largest youth baseball tournament and training complexes.
An Illinois couple has announced plans to buy the farmhouse and baseball field featured in the 1989 film, along with surrounding land, to build the "All-Star Ballpark Heaven," a complex of 24 baseball and softball diamonds, an indoor training facility and lodging that would draw teams from all around to compete in major tournaments.
While the project could provide an economic jolt and breathe new life into Dyersville's most valuable asset, it has unleashed fierce emotions that have pitted neighbors against each other and raised difficult questions for leaders of the town of 4,000. Should the city extend water and sewer service to make the project viable? Would enough people come to make it succeed? And if so, would the development ruin the nostalgic, country feel that made this part of rural Iowa a draw in the first place?

Ends Print, Goes Digital
Encyclopaedia Brittanica
In yet another sign of the growing dominance of the digital publishing market, the oldest English-language encyclopedia still in print is moving solely into the digital age.
The Encyclopaedia Britannica, which has been in continuous print since it was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1768, said on Wednesday it will end publication of its printed editions and continue with digital versions available online.
The flagship, 32-volume printed edition, available every two years, was sold for $1400. An online subscription costs around $70 per year and the company recently launched a set of apps ranging between $1.99 and $4.99 per month.
The company said it will keep selling print editions until the current stock of around 4000 sets ran out.

In Memory
Michael Hossack
Longtime Doobie Brothers drummer Michael Hossack has died at age 65.
The band's manager, Bruce Cohn, said in a statement that Hossack died of cancer on Monday in his home in Dubois, Wyo.
Hossack played with the group from 1971 to 1973 and rejoined in 1987. His drumming can be heard on early hits including "Listen To The Music," ''China Grove" and "Blackwater." He stopped performing with the band two years ago while struggling with cancer.
Doobie Brothers co-founder Tom Johnston said, "Mike has always been a part of my musical life and the life of the Doobie Brothers ... He was an incredible musician."
Hossack grew up in New Jersey and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He is survived by a son and daughter.
