Six Mashup Albums You Can't Get
By DJ Useo
Most mashups are released under what is called a 'Creative Commons License'. It means you don't own the rights, but you can play it for people for free. Obviously, we mashers don't own the tracks we mix as we cut them up from the people who do own the rights. Frankly, I want the authors to get money. Then, they can afford to make more music that I can mix with. Still, it's tough to keep your mashup albums posted, because if the actual copyright holder asks you to remove it from your site, you have to. Let's take a look at 6 new mashup albums that are already unavailable due to 'cease and desist' orders. (Complaints from the copyright holders)
01-'The Best Of Hillbilly Fiddle Mashups' was mixed by a small group of Kentucky dj's out of sheer love for the style. If you think you'd have enjoyed a mashup of Gotye vs Hobo Zeke, this would've been the collection for you. DJ Corn Squeezins headlined this collection. If he sobers up, maybe he'll re-host the links.
02-The brand-spankin' new mashup collection 'Good Reggae Ruined-22 Bootleg Mashup Mixes' from the folks at Lickspittle Productions was available for exactly 4 minutes and 23 seconds before a mystery complaint forced it's removal. The rumor is that a rival mashup forum has been lurking about clicking the copyright complaint button as son as the Lickspittle people post anything. It's not working out for the mystery complainers, though, because...
03-'World's Coolest Sea Shantys Mashed' might have attracted a few listeners, but someone spread a counter-rumor that Bass-Dub-Milton, who assembled this collection, was behind the mystery complaint against 'Good Reggae Ruined'. In my humble opinion, there's a good handful of wild-ass mashups on this album. DJ Helmsman especially impressed me with his blend of Lady Gaga's 'Let's Dance' and Bloodyfinger's (The most feared pirate of the Barbary Coast between September and October 1834) rendition of 'I'd Kill For Some More Rum'. You got'ta give these mashers huge props just for their ability to locate acapellas from such rare sources. The Blackbeard acapella of 'Drunken Sailor' must be almost 400 years old! Too bad the album has been banned already. ARR!
04-Tinitus hasn't stopped DJ Shh from releasing 'World's Quietest Mashups.' I almost heard a copy, but I couldn't turn it up loud enough. I don't understand how anyone else heard it well enough to make a copyright complaint. I can just imagine them in court trying to convince a skeptical judge that the barely audible hissing is David Guetta vs Madonna. Lol. It was so hard to hear right from it's release, but now no one will hear it, except perhaps angels, who I understand can hear anything.
05-Woody Woopy and a group of his online producer friends decided to put together 'Worst Mashups Ever!' just for kicks. I hope they got at least one, since it was forced off it's site within 24 hours. Now you'll never know the delight of Biggie Smalls vs Dolly Parton, Tiny Tim vs Korn, and Glen Campbell vs Vanilla Ice, among many other audio horrors. The removal of the link seems to be in our favour this time.
06-G.R.Ave thought he'd done the impossible by convincing 10 of his deejay friends to put together 'Zombie Mashups-Mixed To Wake the Dead', but I reckon the shock of having it cease and desisted off the net took some of the pleasure out of his day. If you have a craving for mashups about brains, and shambling, this would have been the album for you. I do think G.R.Ave was on to something with his concept of an album for the dead. After all, there's way more dead people than living ones.
Next week I veer back into mashup albums that you can actually lay your ears on. Have the week of good!

It seems that some years ago Malaysia's ruling party took a good look at leading pundits and policy intellectuals in the conservative movement, reached a judgment about their personal and intellectual integrity or lack thereof, and acted in accordance with that judgment. Taking Break From 'Daily Show'
Jon Stewart
Comedy Central says Jon Stewart will take a break from "The Daily Show" starting in June to direct and produce his first feature film.
The network said Tuesday that correspondent-writer John Oliver will host the fake news show for the eight weeks of original episodes scheduled during Stewart's hiatus. The British-born Oliver has been a "Daily Show" regular since 2006.
Stewart is expected back in the anchor chair shortly after Labor Day, Sept. 2.
The film, titled "Rosewater," was written by Stewart and is based on a book by Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari.

Air Force
Senators demanded answers on Tuesday from senior military leaders on why an Air Force commander dismissed charges against a lieutenant colonel after he was convicted of sexual assault.
"Do you really think that after a jury has found someone guilty, and dismissed someone from the military for sexual assault, that one person, over the advice of their legal counselor, should be able to say, 'Never mind'?" Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., asked Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis, the top officer at U.S. Central Command, at a Senate hearing.
McCaskill sent a letter to Air Force officials seeking an explanation while Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., wrote to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel asking him to review the case.
The Air Force Times reported last month that Lt. Col. James Wilkerson, a former inspector general at Aviano Air Base in Italy, had been convicted on Nov. 2 on charges of abusive sexual contact, aggravated sexual assault and three instances of conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman. The incident had involved a civilian employee.
Wilkerson was sentenced to a year in prison and dismissal from the service. But Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, the commander of 3rd Air Force, later dismissed the charges. The Air Force Times reported that Franklin had concluded that the evidence was insufficient to meet the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Drops Boy Scouts Event
Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen is canceling her performance at the national Boy Scouts of America Jamboree because of the organization's exclusion of gays.
Jepsen, the Canadian pop singer best known for the inescapable hit "Call Me Maybe," made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter.
"I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level," she wrote, "... and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe."
Rock band Train also has taken a stand, but pursued a different tack in a post on its website Friday. The group asked the BSA to reconsider its policy rather than immediately pull out of the July gathering in West Virginia. The event, held once every four years, is expected to draw more than 45,000 scouts and adults.

Protests Australian Ban
James Franco
Actor James Franco, star of Disney's new film "Oz the Great and Powerful", has launched an online appeal after censors banned a gay film from screening at Australian film festivals.
The film "I Want Your Love," by director Travis Mathews, is the story of a gay man who has sex with his best friend while partying in Los Angeles. It has been screened at the Toronto LGBT Film Festival and other overseas festivals.
But the Australian Classification Board refused to exempt the film from classification rules to allow its screening at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival in March and the Brisbane Queer Film Festival in April, citing "explicit sexual activity".
Franco, 34, who co-directed a bondage film with Mathews that was shown at this year's Sundance Film Festival in the United States, said the ban was "hypocritical" as sex was used in a sophisticated way in the film.

Mother Teresa
A new study claims the beloved nun might not have been as helpful to the poor as she could have been
It's highly likely that one day, the Catholic Church will officially recognize Mother Teresa as a saint, a position she's held in the popular imagination for years. A new study in the religious studies journal Religieuses, however, says that the late Mother Teresa's reputation is mostly hype - a result of a church declining in popularity trying to boost its image.
Of course, this isn't news to fans of Christopher Hitchens, the erudite atheist who made it his mission to battle religious dogma before he died in 2011. He even wrote a book on the topic called, crudely enough, The Missionary Position.
Bear in mind that Mother Teresa's global income is more than enough to outfit several first-class clinics in Bengal. The decision not to do so, and indeed to run instead a haphazard and cranky institution which would expose itself to litigation and protest were it run by any branch of the medical profession, is a deliberate one. The point is not the honest relief of suffering but the promulgation of a cult based on death and suffering and subjugation.
The contentious report also says the Vatican rushed Teresa's sainthood push for publicity's sake, noting that Catholic officials fast-tracked her beatification and ignored evidence that refuted her "miracles."

Comic Book
Paul McCartney
Singer Paul McCartney's decision to leave the Beatles and embark on a solo career is the subject of a new comic book that aims to give fans a new perspective on the breakup of the Fab Four, its publisher said on Tuesday.
The 24-page "Paul McCartney: Carry that Weight" is the third comic book by U.S. publisher Bluewater Productions about the iconic British band, which spilt-up in 1970.
Speculation about what caused the breakup has ranged from artistic differences and legal disputes outside the group to John Lennon's marriage to artist Yoko Ono.
McCartney has said that the group, which also included George Harrison and Ringo Starr, had already been winding down by the time Lennon met Ono.

Hawaii Senate Passes
Steven Tyler Act
The Hawaii state Senate passed the so-called Steven Tyler Act Tuesday, a bill that seeks to protect celebrities from overeager paparazzi by creating a civil violation if people take unwanted photos or videos of others in their private moments.
The Aerosmith frontman from Massachusetts asked Sen. Kalani English to sponsor the legislation after unwanted photos were taken of him and his girlfriend last December and published in a national magazine, causing family drama.
Tyler owns a multimillion dollar home in Maui, which is part of English's district. English said the proposal could help increase celebrity tourism in Hawaii.
Twenty-three of the state's star-struck 25 Senate members voted in favor of the bill, which now goes to the House for consideration.

Czech Court Acquits Singer
Randy Blythe
A Czech court acquitted the frontman of U.S. heavy metal band Lamb of God of manslaughter charges on Tuesday in the death of a fan who was pushed off the stage at a concert in Prague.
The prosecution accused Randy Blythe, 42, of shoving 19-year-old fan Daniel Nosek off the stage at the 2010 concert, causing him to hit his head when he crashed onto the floor. Nosek died in hospital a few weeks later from his head injury.
Presiding judge Tomas Kubec ruled that Blythe's actions did not constitute the crime of causing an injury leading to death.
Kubec said the concert promoters were ultimately to blame for failing to prevent fans from clambering onto the stage. "We reached the conclusion that there was a serious fault on the side of the promoter and organizer of the concert."

Dancer Detained Over Acid Attack
Bolshoi
Russian police detained one of the Bolshoi Ballet's top dancers on Tuesday over an acid attack that nearly blinded the troupe's artistic director and exposed fierce backstage rivalries at the famed theatre.
Russia's Interior Ministry said in a statement that Pavel Dmitrichenko, a Bolshoi soloist who is to dance in "Sleeping Beauty" this month, is suspected of plotting the attack that left Sergei Filin, 42, with severe burns after a masked assailant threw a jar of acid in his face.
Police also said they detained a man suspected of carrying out the attack and another thought to have driven him to the crime scene outside Filin's apartment on January 17.
The attack shocked a country used to violent settling of scores, shining the spotlight on infighting at one its top cultural institutions. The involvement of one of its star dancers is likely to deepen the sense of crisis at the Bolshoi.

Sentenced To 6 Months
Edward Furlong
Court records show a judge has sentenced Edward Furlong to six months in jail for violating his probation in a 2010 case.
The "Terminator 2" star was accused of disobeying the terms of his sentence in a domestic violence case in which he was convicted of violating a restraining order.
The 35-year-old actor has been the subject of restraining orders filed by both his ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend. Furlong was charged in January with battery on his ex-girlfriend in a case that remains pending.
Superior Court Judge Dennis Mulcahy directed officials not to release the actor early or give him credit for time served, but jail records showed Tuesday that he may be released in late May.

Tabloid Lawsuit Moves To Private Mediation
Tom Cruise
If you were hoping to watch Tom Cruise's legal battle against "In Touch" and "Life & Style" publishers Bauer Publishing Company play out in public, you're out of luck.
Cruise's lawsuit against Bauer has been moved to private mediation, according to papers filed in U.S. District Court in Central California on Friday.
Cruise filed his $50 million defamation lawsuit against Bauer in October, claiming that Life & Style and In Touch said he had abandoned his daughter, Suri, following his split from wife Katie Holmes.
Attorneys for Bauer said that they would likely seek discovery for the "role, if any, that Plaintiff's membership in the Church of Scientology played in his decisions regarding his visitation and communications with Suri Cruise after his separation and divorce."

Returns Painting
Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
A Stuttgart museum has returned a 600-year-old painting to the estate of Jewish art dealer Max Stern, who was forced to sell his collection before fleeing Nazi Germany.
The oil painting "The Virgin with Child," attributed to the Master of Flemaile - an unidentified Flemish artist from the early 1400s - was turned over by Staatsgalerie Stuttgart at a ceremony Tuesday at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin.
Stern closed his gallery in 1937 under pressure from the Nazis and sold its paintings before fleeing Germany and resettling in Montreal.
He died in 1987 as a successful Canadian gallery owner, and bequeathed his collection to several institutions.
The Max Stern Restitution Project, headed by Montreal's Concordia University, is working to retrieve the missing pieces. Ten of some 400 have been returned.

Visitors Sue Over "Deceptive" Admission Fee
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Visiting the venerable Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City can be a transformative experience for any art lover. And best of all, it's free.
But a lawsuit filed on Tuesday against the museum complains that most museum-goers have no idea that the "recommended" $25 entrance fee is nothing more than a suggestion.
The plaintiffs include a member of the museum, along with two Czech tourists who purchased single-day admissions. They argue the museum employs misleading signs and other techniques to dupe its 6 million annual visitors into believing they must pay to gain access.
The museum's rent-free lease with the city mandates that it open its doors to the public for free on multiple days a week, although it is permitted to ask for a voluntary fee. But the lawsuit says the museum deliberately deceives its visitors into believing that the charge is mandatory.
Signs above the admissions desk that list the entrance fees feature the word "recommended" in small type below the word "admissions" in larger, bold type. The lawsuit also pointed out that visitors are funneled in lines to the admissions desks, where cashiers await to collect the fee.

Launches Hebrew Edition
Playboy
Israelis can now read Playboy 'for the articles' as a Hebrew language edition came to the holy land Tuesday.
Playboy has been widely available in Israel for years but this marks the first local edition of the magazine. It features Israeli models and articles by Israeli writers.
Owner and publisher Daniel Pomerantz launched Playboy Israel in Tel Aviv on Tuesday at a press conference, standing next to a tall model wearing the trademark ears and tail of a Playboy bunny.
It's not clear how well the magazine will be received in the holy land where religious sensitivities are always simmering under the surface and observant Jews and Muslims live by strict modesty rules. Religious zealots have frequently burned down bus stops with ads of fully dressed women and have prompted major advertisers not to use female models regardless of how modestly they are covered up.
Erotica is freely available but not with local talent in Hebrew. The Israeli edition of Penthouse, the traditional and more daring rival of Playboy, flopped when it debuted here in 1989.

In Memory
Jewel Akens
Jewel Akens, a pop singer who had a 1960s hit with "The Birds and the Bees," has died in Southern California at age 79.
His wife, Eddie Mae Akens, tells the Los Angeles Times that Akens died Friday from back surgery complications at an Inglewood hospital.
Akens was in a group called the Turnarounds when they were offered a song that talked about "the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees and the moon up above - and a thing called love."
Other members disliked it, so Akens recorded it solo. The song was No. 3 on Billboard's Top 100 chart in 1965 and was later covered by Dean Martin and others.
Akens never duplicated its success but performed into his 70s.
