List of presidents of the United States by net worth (Wikipedia)
"(This list of president's ranked by net worth is misleading, because it should have estimated their net worth upon assuming the presidency - Clinton and Obama were not rich when elected - but interesting, because look at Washington and Jefferson! Two enormously rich men, for their time, yet very much not monarchical . . . the former, setting the example of leaving after two terms (brilliantly remarked upon here); the latter, writing that "all men are created equal," a radical ideal at the time.)" - Andrew Tobias
This single, #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, had an overriding theme of a world doomed by its passive acquiescence to and overdependence on its own overdone technologies. What is the title of this chart-topping song?
Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift wrote Gulliver's Travels, or Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. What was Gulliver's first name?
Gulliver's Travels, or Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships is a prose satire of 1726 by the Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, satirising both human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. Swift claimed that he wrote Gulliver's Travels "to vex the world rather than divert it".
The travel begins with a short preamble in which Lemuel Gulliver gives a brief outline of his life and history before his voyages.

It was Lemuel, Lemuel Gulliver. I checked to make sure. Did I check on the Interwebs? No I didn't, I checked my copy of Gulliver's Travels. It's a very old book, I don't how old because I can't find a publishing date but an inscription on one of the first blank pages reads "George from Jessie Dec. 25, 1887." Included with the book is "The travels and Surprising Adventurers of Baron Munchausen." There are illustrations. On the last page of the book is an offer to buy a complete library for $14.00, including an elegant polished maple book rack. There are 50 books listed.

• When Jon Scieszka, who would later be an author of books for young people, was in the 3rd grade at a Catholic school, he learned that his class could adopt a pagan baby from another country and give money so the child could grow up Catholic and get an education and have food, shelter, and clothing. As an incentive for the children to raise money for the pagan baby, Sister Mary Catherine announced that the boys would be pitted against the girls, and whichever group raised the most money would be able to name the baby. This motivated the boys, and they raised enough money for the class to adopt two pagan babies, surprising Sister Mary Catherine with their fundraising prowess. Now it was time to name the pagan babies. Sister Mary Catherine suggested, "The names of the apostles - Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John - are very nice." But the spokesboy for the boys said, "We've already decided on our names. We're going to name our pagan babies Al Kaline and Bill Freehan." Sister Mary Catherine objected, "But those aren't apostles." The spokesboy replied, "Heck, no. They're the best Detroit Tigers ever. Freehan will definitely hit .300 this year. And Kaline is gonna get 30 homers for sure." Sister Mary Catherine replied, "Matthew and Mark will be fine names." And those are the names that she wrote down for the pagan babies. With that, the boys lost interest in the contest, and thereafter the girls always won. Today, Jon knows that in the pagan parts of the world lots of guys are running around with the names Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; however, he says, "There should be two guys with the coolest names ever. But we got robbed."
• Light soprano and coloratura Natalie Dessay ran into voice problems. After discovering that she had a pseudocyst on one vocal cord and a polyp on the other, she underwent surgery - twice - to correct the problem. The operations worked. By the way, she is French but prefers "Natalie" to the French "Nathalie" in honor of Natalie Wood. In addition, she has named her three cats Cyst, Nodule, and Polyp.
Old Age
• Quite a few people are surprised to see that they have grown old. Peg Bracken once walked into a store with her husband. She looked at the image on the closed-circuit television and thought, "That's a pleasant-looking old couple over there." Then she realized that she was looking at an image of herself and her husband. By the way, Peg once got two tickets to a fashion show and asked a friend to go with her. The friend declined, saying, "They make me feel old and ugly and fat and broke. Why do you go?" Peg replied, "It makes my feet feel good to watch the models teeter around in the high heels. I bet they can't wait to take them off." In her old age, Peg sometimes thought of what her last words should be. Her research on last words turned up her absolute favorite: Doris Medina, the mother of author John J. Medina, said, "Will you please turn off the television?"
• Barbara Klassen's great-great uncle lived to be 106 years old. During that time, he was healthy and happy and he served as a chauffeur to help other old but less-healthy senior citizens get around. On his 100th birthday, his driver's license needed to be renewed, but a clerk asked him, "You're 100 years old. What do you need a driver's license for?" He answered, "Somebody has to drive the old folks around."
• When cellist Pablo Casals was 95 years old, opera singer Plácido Domingo visited him. He was pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. Casals, despite his frail old age, was busy studying the score of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Despite being in the midst of his own health journey - after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer -Trebek, 79, has donated $100,000 to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, a nonprofit organization that aims to combat hunger and homelessness in Los Angeles, California, TMZ reported.
Trebek, who has been an avid donor to the organization over the years, presented the grand gesture after taking a tour of the mission's new North Hollywood shelter, TMZ reported.
The new shelter will house over 80 beds and bathrooms and will have a laundry room and a commissary, TMZ reported. The outlet also added that a wing in the structure will be named after Trebek.
In the world of architecture, there is no award more well-known than the annual Pritzker Architecture Prize. And while some readers will be forgiven if they've never heard of this year's winners-Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara of Dublin, Ireland-their ingenious work may shed light on the path architecture should take in the 21st century. From the Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) in Lima, Peru (which won the 2016 RIBA International prize) to the Universita Luigi Bocconi in Milan, Italy (winner of the 2008 World Building of the Year), Farrell and McNamara have amassed a body of work that, while it may not have turned them into household names, surely caught the attention of the Pritzker's jury members.
Both born in Ireland, Farrell and McNamara first met in the early 1970s while students at the University College Dublin. In 1978 the duo formed Grafton Architects, a firm that specializes in designing university buildings and, as recently as 2018, curated the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. With the announcement of Farrell and McNamara as the 2020 recipients, their names will now appear along past Pritzker Prize winners: Frank Gehry, I.M. Pei, Zaha Hadid, Philip Johnson, Oscar Niemeyer, and Norman Foster, among others. Today's announcement also means, of course, that it will be yet another year until other major architects such as Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, David Adjaye, Santiago Calatrava, Daniel Libeskind, and David Chipperfield can lay claim to the elusive prize.
Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara's designs are quite different from several previous laureates such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. As with any major global award, the Pritzker Prize can celebrate a global trend, a cultural critique, or aspirations for the future. Where does this place Farrell and McNamara? If, for example, one were to look at a Gehry-designed building, the very texture of it would seem to change by the minute, a phenomena produced by a moving sun reflecting off of a titanium surface (Gehry won the award in 1989, a time when postmodern architecture was finding its stride). Hadid's designs feature verbose swoops that seem to defy gravity, and in the opinion of at least some critics, the antithesis of egalitarian architecture (the late Iraqi-born architect, who won in 2004, saw an early rise that was in tandem with the strong global economy of the 1990s). By comparison, Farrell and McNamara's designs tend to be big, accessible structures that fit creatively into non-prescriptive spaces. What's more, their practice leans into the growing practice of eco-friendly architecture. And perhaps no design of theirs better epitomizes this vision than UTEC, the university of engineering and technology in Lima.
Brit Hume might want to remember to close out his tabs before posting screenshots of his personal web browser to Twitter.
The Fox News senior political analyst accidentally revealed to the world his web searches when he posted a screenshot of betting odds that showed former Vice President Joe Biden ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders as the front-runner to win the Democratic primary.
Anyone with a discerning eye can see that above the open browser, there is a tab open that reads "Sexy Vixen Vinyl."
Hume has since deleted Tuesday's tweet, but it was captured for posterity by one clever Twitter user, who also took the liberty of finding the exact web page Hume had open in said tab.
This isn't even the first time Hume has made this mistake. On Sunday, the television personality tweeted a similar screenshot of his browser showing betting odds that favored Sanders - with the very same "Sexy Vixen Vinyl" tab open.
Start tuning your tiny violins, because actor Antonio Sabato Jr.-who gave a pro-Donald Trump speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention and has publicly promoted Trump's lies about Barack Obama being a Muslim "bad guy"-is still complaining about being "blacklisted" from Hollywood because of his political beliefs. Speaking with Variety, Sabato revealed that he "had to sell everything" to pay back his debts because he couldn't get work as an actor after 2016, explaining that all of his agents and managers left him and that he was cut from a "reality TV competition series."
This is pretty much the same thing he said immediately after his appearance at the convention, when he whined that it was "like Communism" for directors and managers to not work with him. He even tried to launch a political career in 2017, but it went about as well as his acting career (i.e., poorly).
Since then, things have gotten so bad for Sabato that he "decided to relocate to Florida" and had no choice but to get a job in construction to support his family. "I go on the job at two in the morning, and I'm making sure that the job is controlled and supervised by me," he explained. "I'm in the car all day, driving, going through all the sites. Five days a week, nonstop."
Oh, dear! This poor, poor man! How could something as unbelievably nightmarish as getting a normal fucking job happen to… hold on, IMDb is loading… the star of Bad Girl Island and Shark Hunter? This man was on The Bold And The Beautiful and General Hospital and Earth 2 and Joey, and Hollywood's going to chew him up and spit him out after a 30-year career just because he supports a fascist regime and also because that's literally what Hollywood does to 99 percent of the people who try to become actors? How dare they!
The White House briefing room is back in business.
The historic White House setting had fallen into something of a state of neglect during the era of President Donald Trump (R-Crooked), who prefers to act as his own spokesman rather than send out his press secretary to brief reporters in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.
In recent months, it's become a storage place for piles of journalists' gear, step ladders and other equipment.
But with the arrival of the coronavirus threat in the U.S., Trump himself has made two appearances in the briefing room in the past week and Vice President Mike Pence (R-Pharisee) and other officials briefed the press from the podium there on Monday.
"We will be back here every day. Get used to seeing us," Pence said.
Yellowstone National Park is capturing wandering bisons for possible slaughter as part of a population reduction programme, officials have said.
From Sunday any of the mammals found migrating outside the park will be held in pens for possible slaughter, and by midday on Monday six bison had been captured.
State and federal officials carry out the reduction annually and wish to reduce the population by up to 900 animals this winter.
The reduction will also involve hunting, slaughter and placing animals into quarantine for relocation.
A trio of scientists believe they've identified the very first protein from outer space. They found the proteins in two meteorite samples, the Allende meteorite and the Acfer 086 meteorites, which researchers previously discovered in Mexico in 1969 and Algeria in 1990, respectively. The scientists-who hail from Harvard University, PLEX Corporation, and Bruker Scientific-posted the research to the preprint server ArXiv on February 22.
Proteins were "discovered in Allende and Acfer 086 with extra-terrestrial isotope enhancement that confirmed that these unexpected molecules were not artifacts due to terrestrial contamination," they wrote. They dubbed the protein, which is similar to proteins commonly found on Earth, hemolithin.
Naturally, we had the same question as you probably do: Does this mean we've found extraterrestrial life? Well, no. Proteins are among the ingredients for life. The organic molecules are made up of long strings of amino acids. But technically, they're not a sign of life as we know it.
For nearly 50 years, researchers have been searching for and finding organic compounds like amino acids in meteorite samples-mostly carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. In 2012, NASA discovered amino acids in a carbonaceous meteorite, and in 2017, scientists found entirely new organic compounds in the famed Murchison meteorite. This is the first time scientists have discovered what amounts to an entire protein.
A tiny skull mistakenly attributed to an ancient feline has been re-identified as belonging to an ancestor to modern weasels, wolverines, minks, and otters.
Introducing Corumictis wolsani, the earliest known mustelid in North America, according to research published in Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. Mustelids are a diverse family of carnivorous animals including weasels, badgers, ferrets, wolverines, and similar creatures. Now extinct, C. wolsani lived around 26 million years ago in what is now Oregon.
"It has these incredibly sharp teeth, sharper than some weasels today," Ryan Paterson, a paleontologist from Carleton University in Ottawa and the lead author of the new study, told CBC News. "It was probably a ferocious little thing, despite being the size of the tiniest weasel on the planet."
Indeed, you shouldn't let the small size of this animal fool you. Despite a skull measuring just 4 centimeters (1.56 inches) long, C. wolsani was likely an adept killer, feasting on smaller land mammals like ground squirrels, gophers, and rabbits, according to the new research. And in fact, their diminutive size may have allowed them to "slither into rodent holes," as the authors wrote.
