Andrew Tobias: Power Walking With Chris Christie
Putin is winning. His sneak attack may ultimately prove to have done more to diminish America than the Japanese did with theirs. It is ongoing, and almost half our country doesn't even believe it happened or is happening. We have handed the American Century to China. Our allies are as hopeful as anyone else who "believes in" things like science, civility, and truth-telling that Trump will be gone soon. But can the damage ever be fully repaired?

Finney was the face of the vibrant new wave of working-class postwar British cinema, and maintained a fierce vitality in his distinguished later performances.
Amy O'Connor: "Hozier: Why Seamus Heaney's last words mean so much to me" (Irish Times)
Such is his fondness for Heaney that he has the poet's famous last words - Noli timere - tattooed on his arm. "It's something he texted his wife, apparently, in the last moments of his life," he said of the tattoo's significance. "It just means 'don't be afraid' and I found something very beautiful about that. Obviously the fact that they used to converse in Latin is incredible to me. The fact that he texted his wife that before he left the world is very tragic and very beautiful."
Slavoj Žižek: Let's not demystify the vagina, please (Spectator)
In eroticism, there is only a small step from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Anecdotes
• The comedy team of Bobby Clark and Paul McCullough is little remembered today, but they were big on Broadway in the 1920s and 1930s. In an interview in Variety, Mr. Clark once said, "A great many people think it is strange that McCullough and I have been together so long. It is not strange at all. We are doing fine; we get along together fine. We don't have fights; we don't have arguments. If a question arises as to how a certain piece of business should be done or how some certain gag should be put over, we don't talk and argue about it like so many people; we sit down quietly and talk it over pro and con. I listen to McCullough's version, and he listens to mine, and then I go out on the stage and do it my way."
• Sam Norkin was a famous artist whose caricatures of plays appeared in newspapers and magazines around the country. While growing up, he attended high school with a couple of friends who later became actors. One of his indulgences at work was to put the faces of his friends in one of his caricatures whenever possible. Sometimes, this can be difficult. When his friend Salem Ludwig was performing a bit part in An Enemy of the People, he appeared in only one scene: a town meeting that featured the entire cast. In order to get Salem into his caricature, Mr. Norton drew the town meeting and included all the members of the cast. (He featured his friend prominently in the foreground.)
• Noël Coward frequently got into arguments with the actors and actresses in his plays, but the arguments were always sorted out later. Once, he and Gertie Lawrence were having a loud argument in a dressing room when a woman in the cast ran into the dressing room and told them, "You must stop this. I love you both and you can't go on like this." Mr. Coward told her, "How dare you interfere when I'm talking with my friend!"
• George Balanchine seldom used modern dance choreographers at the New York City Ballet. Although Martha Graham worked there in 1959, and Merce Cunningham worked there in 1966, Mr. Balanchine explained that they were there because they were "friends of Lincoln's" - that is, friends of Lincoln Kirstein, who originally proposed to Mr. Balanchine that he come to the United States and establish ballet here.
• Robert Benchley met Donald Ogden Stewart on a rainy night as they were both coming out of a restaurant. Mr. Stewart saw a passerby with a large umbrella, pretended the passerby was a taxi, and took his arm and said, "Yale Club, please." Mr. Benchley then took Mr. Stewart's arm and said, "Can you drop me off at my place? It's on the way."
• During the first season of Gilligan's Island, Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells weren't mentioned in the TV series' theme song - they were merely referred to as "the rest." After the series was over, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Wells remained friends, and Ms. Wells signs her letters and cards to him with "Love, the rest."
• Loïe Fuller (1862-1928), an American dancer who took Paris by storm, once wrote the Curies, Marie and Pierre, for a sample of radium she could include in a dance. Madame Curie wrote back, explaining both the dangers and the cost of such a venture. The letter resulted in a friendship.
• Once, a Jew complained to Rabbi Isaac Meir that in all the world, he didn't have a friend. Rabbi Isaac replied, "Surely you have a Gemarain your house?" (A Gemarais a part of the Talmud and consists of commentary on the Mishnah.)
• Oscar Levant was friends with George Gershwin for many years. In fact, a chapter in Mr. Levant's book A Smattering of Ignorance is titled "My Life, or the Story of George Gershwin."
• The people of Poland hated their rulers in the USSR. A sign in Poland once bore the slogan, "A Month of Soviet-Polish Friendship." Underneath was handwritten the message, "Agreed. But not one day longer."
• Warren G. Harding once told William A. White: "I have no trouble with my enemies. But my goddamn friends, White, they are the ones that keep me walking the floor nights."

Exits Movie Over John Lasseter Hire
Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson has dropped out of the voice cast of Skydance Animation's upcoming film "Luck," a spokesperson for the actress told Variety.
The beloved British star did some recording for the project, but dropped out in January, following John Lasseter's hire to the top animation job at David Ellison's studio, an insider close to the film added.
Skydance Animation had no comment. Thompson had no comment beyond confirming her departure from the movie.
Lasseter's hire made waves at the beginning of the year, as the former Disney-Pixar kingpin left his animation studio in a cloud of misconduct accusations before spending a year away from the business entirely.
Thompson's departure would be the first instance of top talent refusing to work with the studio in light of Lasseter. The executive has spent nearly two months at the helm, drumming up a development slate and working on two titles already announced.

Since The Beatles
Ariana Grande
While you were breaking up with your boyfriend because you were bored, Ariana Grande was breaking a half-century-old record.
The pop star just became the first recording artist to hold the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964, according to Billboard.
Grande's latest album, "thank u, next" exploded on social media when it dropped earlier this month, and the album's eponymous song earned the artist her first ever Grammy Award.
This week, three songs from the album dominated the Hot 100: "7 Rings" was No. 1 for a fourth week; "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" was No. 2; and the former seven-week leader "Thank U, Next" was No. 3.
Prior to Grande, The Beatles for 55 years held the crown for the top three spots in one week. In March 1964, the chart was topped by The Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love," "Twist and Shout" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret." The following month, the band's songs claimed the five top spots.

Girl Scout Cookies
'Momoas'
Charlotte Holmberg, a Girl Scout in Highlands Ranch, Colo., came up with a smart marketing trick to sell more cookies this year. The Top Cookie CEO - an honor given to Girl Scouts who consistently sell the most cookies - redesigned the box of one of the organization's top-selling Samoas cookies into "Momoas," featuring a shirtless photo of Aquaman actor Jason Momoa.
"The moms are getting really excited and are saying they need them!" Holmberg told Denver news station KUSA.
One local mom posted a picture of the newly branded boxes, writing, "Got my Girl Scout stash for the whole entire year and of course some Jason Samoas."
However, the redesigned boxes cater to more than just the ladies. The fifth grader told KUSA that "boys will also want to buy some because he might be their favorite character."
What started out as a meme on the internet has turned into a brilliant Girl Scout Cookie promotion. According to KUSA, Holmberg and her mother, a marketing professional, came up with the idea to boost her cookie sales for the 2019 year. They began printing photos of the Hollywood actor, cutting them out and pasting them on the signature purple purple boxes with a new name: "Momoas."

Leaving Neverland
It's a documentary Michael Jackson's estate doesn't want you to see. But despite legal threats, HBO and Channel 4 will air Leaving Neverland next month.
A new trailer offers a first look at the troubling two-part, four-hour film that premiered at Sundance film festival last month, featuring the testimonies of James Safechuck and Wade Robson, who allege that Jackson sexually abused them as children.
"He told me if they ever found out what we were doing, he and I would go to jail," says Robson in the trailer.
The film shocked critics and audiences when it was shown at Sundance. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called it "devastating" and the Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg praised it as "complicated and heartbreaking".
Jackson's estate has already criticised the film in a 10-page letter addressed to HBO's CEO. It denied the allegations and condemned director Dan Reed for not speaking to anyone in Jackson's family or legal team. Since the film premiered, some Jackson fans have attacked the director and the two accusers.

Parade In Italy
Warhammer
A gigantic statue of what appears to depict President Donald Trump (R-OfVlad) as a horrifying Twitter sword-wielding "God-Emperor" character from the Warhammer 40,000 video games loomed over Italy during a weekend parade over the weekend.
Fabrizio Galli, the creator of the menacing sculpture, said he was inspired by Warhammer 40,000 because the period of intellectual debate has been long gone, and that the world has now "entered the era of fantasy" and "virtual life."
The Trump-like statue is carrying a sword with the Italian phrase "dazi vostri," inscribed and blue Twitter birds fluttering around the weapon.
Speaking with the Italian press, Mr Galli said the phrase in the sword can also mean "here's your f***ing tarrifs." On Twitter, Italian social media users pointed out that the Italian phrase is a play on "cazzi vostri," which translates to "none of your f***ing business."
The statue was made for the Carnevale Di Viarreggio, an annual festival, known for its papier-mâché sculptures, with about 600,000 people attending in Tuscany.

Border Wall 'Better For School Kids'
Kentucky
The children of Fort Campbell Mahaffey Middle School will indeed have a new construction project to look forward to in the coming year - just maybe not that new schoolhouse they were expecting.
Instead, they might get a border wall - or a fence, or barbed wire, or something like that - about 1,000 miles southwest of their school, which sits on a military base straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee line.
Yes, that border wall.
That's because the $62m (£48m) that was earmarked for the school's construction is among the billions of dollars already appropriated to the Defence Department, the pot of money the Trump administration now wants to redirect to pay for 230 miles of barriers along the southern border as part of the president's national emergency declaration.
And those Kentucky middle schoolers will be better off because of it - at least according to senator Lindsey Graham (R-Narnia).

Set Up By ICE
University of Farmington
In the summer of 2017, a foreign student in Michigan received an email from an official at the University of Farmington.
"It was a pleasure speaking with you," university official Ali Milani wrote to the student from India. "Thank you for your recent interest in The University of Farmington, a nationally accredited business and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) institution. Here at the University of Farmington we have created an innovative learning environment that combines traditional instruction with fulltime professional experiences. We offer flexible class schedules and a focus on students who do not want to interrupt their careers."
At the bottom of the email, it described the university as: "A nationally accredited institution authorized to enroll international students by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."
The email and others like it were obtained by the Detriot Free Press, revealing how the university portrayed itself to potential foreign students. The email exchanges with Ali Milani - who is described in a LinkedIn profile as the president of the University of Farmington - show how the school in Farmington Hills, Michigan, may have lured students to enroll in a fake university set up by The Department of Homeland Security.
A federal indictment unsealed Jan. 30 said that the university was produced by federal agents with an investigative division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is part of DHS. Federal agents posed as university officials such as "Ali Milani" to trick the students, say attorneys.

Inside The Great Blue Hole
Belize
A recent expedition has taken the plunge into the Great Blue Hole, the curiously alluring marine sinkhole inside the Lighthouse reef of Belize, and brought back a collection of stunning photographs detailing this geological oddity.
Between November 27 and December 13, 2018, an expedition team conducted over 20 dives into the Blue Hole using Aquatica's Stingray submarine and the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration's (R.I.D.E.) Idabel submarine. The crew includes none other than Richard Branson, famously rich human and founder of the Virgin Group, and Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famous underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau who brought attention to the Blue Hole in the early 1970s, along with a host of scientists and submarine experts.
Along with some impressive holiday snaps, their work also produced a 3D sonar map of the Blue Hole and gathered environmental data about its water. Once processed, all of this information will be shared with the Belize government and the global scientific community to help preserve the Great Blue Hole and its biodiversity.
At over 300 meters (984 feet) wide and 125 meters (410 feet) deep, the Great Blue Hole is the second largest marine sinkhole in the world, following the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea. It's found in the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Charles Darwin described this reef as "the most remarkable reef in the West Indies." And for a good reason too: the area is home to a number of unique reef types and is among the most pristine reef ecosystems in the Western Hemisphere. It's also awash with biodiversity, regularly visited by an array of marine creatures, including hammerhead sharks and reef sharks.
One of the Great Blue Hole's most interesting features is its hydrogen sulfide layer. At a depth of around 90 meters (~300 feet), a cloak of hydrogen sulfide is found within the hole. This stuff is toxic, corrosive, and it really, really stinks. As you sink a little deeper towards the bottom, the water also becomes absent of oxygen (anoxic). This results in a graveyard of shellfish at around 106 meters (~350 feet) where thousands of unsuspecting creatures have dared to swim too deep and perished.

Hiding in Plain Sight
'River of Stars'
One billion years ago, a cluster of stars formed in our galaxy. Since then, that cluster has whipped four long circles around the edge of the Milky Way. In that time, the Milky Way's gravity has stretched that cluster out from a blob into a long stellar stream. Right now, the stars are passing relatively close to Earth, just about 330 light-years away. And scientists say that river of stars could help determine the mass of the entire Milky Way..
Astronomers have seen these stars before, mixed in with lots of stars all around them. But until now, they didn't realize the stars were part of a group. The river, which is 1,300 light-years long and 160 light-years wide, winds through the Milky Way's vast, dense star field. But 3D-mapping data from Gaia, a European Space Agency spacecraft, showed that the stars in the stream moved together at roughly the same speed and in the same direction.
"Identifying nearby disk streams is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Astronomers have been looking at, and through, this new stream for a long time, as it covers most of the night sky, but only now realize it is there, and it is huge, and shockingly close to the sun," João Alves, an astronomer at the University of Vienna and second author of the paper, said in a statement.
Scientists suspect that star clusters, like the one that eventually became this stellar stream can reveal how galaxies get their stars. But in a big, heavy galaxy like the Milky Way, those clusters usually end up shredded, with gravity pulling individual stars in different directions. [Amazing Astronomy: Victorian-Era Illustrations of the Heavens]
This stream is big enough though, and heavy enough, that it's remained intact (albeit stretched) in the billion years it has circled the galactic center. And there may be more stars in the stream than those found in the initial Gaia data.
