INSTITUTE OF BOOTLEGGERS collections coming as the year progresses. We generally attempt to release four of these collections a year. There's certainly enough material to post one a month, but we're all far too busy with other stuff to make those kind of deadlines.

Anecdotes - Fans
• At the 1978 World Championships, gymnast Kurt Thomas won a gold medal in floor exercise - thus winning the United States its first gold medal ever at this level and becoming an instant celebrity. Immediately, he began receiving lots of fan letters from 12- and 13-year-old girls who had developed crushes on him. Each of these letters was answered - by Kurt's wife, Beth.
• Back when Harry "Steamboat" Johnson was umpiring in the minor leagues, fans were much more violent than they are now. After one game in which the home team lost after a player hit a home run but failed to touch first base, fans surrounded Steamboat, who calmly pulled out a knife and used it to clean his fingernails. The fans decided not to engage in violence.
• For many years, Soviet athlete Albert Azaryan was the Lord of the Rings in men's gymnastics. At a national championship tournament, a woman arrived late at the gym and asked, "When is Azaryan performing on the rings?" When she learned that he had already performed his routine, she started crying and explained, "But I only came here because of him."
• Gymnast Vera Cáslavská of Czechoslovakia won 18 gold medals at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics Games. During an interview, a reporter asked her about her hobbies. She said that she collected postcards, and within three days after the interview appeared, fans had sent her 3,500 more postcards to add to her collection.
• After winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, women's gymnastics teammate Amy Chow became a major celebrity. While attending her first year at Stanford University, she was forced to take her name down from her room in the dormitory because so many students were stopping by to congratulate her on her gold medal.
• On The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob and Laura Petrie lived at 448 Bonnie Meadow Road in New Rochelle, New York. This was the real-life address of series creator Carl Reiner - except that he changed the number slightly so that fans of the series wouldn't stop by and knock on his door.
• Customs vary from culture to culture. While Alexandra Danilova and Alicia Markova were dancing in Rio de Janeiro, fans would wait by the stage door after the performance. To show their appreciation for a fine performance, the fans threw firecrackers at the ballet dancers' feet.
• Mickey Mantel was loved by his fans. When he retired, he received more than 50 scrapbooks as gifts from fans who had kept them during his baseball career.

Reader Question
Block List?
Marty
I take daily pleasure in forwarding some of the links obtained from
Bartcop Entertainment, but lately, some of my e-mail to family members
and others close to me has contained the above notification with the the
mail, which was immediately returned to me, failing to go out onto the
Net and on to the intended recipient.
The numbers make no sense to me, but then I got the idea that certain
sites are on some kind of block list...corporate or political (there's a
difference?)
To test the idea, I tried sending something on Vox, from one of my
e-mail names to another, and, sure enough, the message appeared and the
mail did not move.
I don't know what other sites are thus affected\afflicted.
Here's the message:
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.2.0

Thanks, James - good question, but I don't have an answer.
Can anyone help?

We all know Predator hates the WH--thinks it is beneath him. (My offer to help him pack up and get the hell out, which I emailed to the WH, still stands!)
But everyone says that giving the SOTU is one of the few things about the presidency he likes. Because it's all about him (not that it SHOULD be--a normal president would understand that it's about US and OUR country--NOT him). ALL eyes on him, everyone talking about him and the latest American carnage word salad he will spew on us.
So I'm just more and more delighted that Madame Speaker was able to deny him the opportunity to do this during the absurd shutdown, And even after the government finally is back in business, she was able to make him NEGOTIATE the date she would allow him to do this.
F Predator! Power to Pelosi! Hope she burns that rat's nest's off the back of his ugly head with her powerful female eyes!

Estate Donates $15M
Garry Shandling
UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine revealed Monday that it had received a $15.2 million bequest from the estate of comedian Garry Shandling, who underwent surgery at the school's Ronald Reagan Medical Center.
The funds, which will go toward research in the school's endocrinology, diabetes and hypertension, infectious diseases and pancreatic disease units, will create and endow the Garry Shandling Endocrine Surgery Research Fund, the Garry Shandling Infectious Diseases Innovation Fund and the Garry Shandling Pancreatic Diseases Fund, according to UCLA. Remaining funds will go to the newly created Garry Shandling Medical Research Fund.
UCLA also announced on Monday that it had named a multipurpose space in Geffen Hall, its medical building, the Gary Shandling Learning Studio.
Shandling underwent surgery at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for hyperparathyroidism, a rare and occasionally fatal condition, prior to dying in 2016 from a pulmonary embolism. At UCLA, the comedian was treated by Dr. Michael Yeh, the section chief of endocrine surgery, and Dr. Howard Reber, a distinguished professor of surgery.
The legacy of the Larry Sanders Show star was last in the news in 2018, when HBO released the Judd Apatow-directed documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling.

Renewed for 11th and Final Season
'Modern Family'
It's the end of a comedy era for ABC: "Modern Family" has been renewed for an 11th and final season in 2019-20.
The 20th Century Fox Television series has been an anchor of ABC's primetime schedule since its premiere in 2009. Created by Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, the domestic comedy revolving around an extended family that won five consecutive Emmy Awards for best comedy series from 2010 to 2014. The show and its stars have picked up countless other awards, from Peabody honors to SAG, DGA, WGA and PGA kudos.
"Modern Family" has seen its seen its audience decline in recent season but it consistently ranks among ABC's top five scripted series. The show, now in its 10th season, had been expected to wrap its run with season 11.
"Modern Family" has been credited as groundbreaking for primetime in its portrayal of a gay couple - Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Mitchell and Eric Stonestreet's Cameron - as stable, loving and parents of a precocious girl. It also examined the concerns of blended families - as represented by Ed O'Neill's Jay, Sofia Vergara's Gloria and Rico Rodriguez's Manny - and the trials and tribulations of a traditional family with three kids, represented by Ty Burrell's Phil, Julie Bowen's Claire and siblings Haley, Alex and Luke played by Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter and Nolan Gould, respectively.

NBC Cancels Plans
'Hair Live!'
The iconic counterculture rock musical Hair won't be getting a live televised production any time soon.
It was announced on Monday that NBC has decided to scrap its initial plans to stage the famed musical to focus their attention on bringing a more family-friendly, and potentially less politically charged, musical to the screen.
Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen of NBC Entertainment, released a statement explaining their decision, while reiterating the network's passion for producing live musicals as a form of event programming.
The acclaimed 50-year-old play revolves around a group of hippies who face mounting pressure to conform to societal norms while struggling with the looming threat of the Vietnam war.
One of the reasons behind Hair Live! getting pulled, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was because of it's scheduled time slot. The musical was originally set to air Sunday, May 19, which would have put it in direct competition with the season finale of American Idol and the series finale of Game of Thrones.

Demolition
National Butterfly Center
A butterfly sanctuary is about to be demolished to make way for President-for-now Donald Trump's (R-OfVlad) hotly contested border wall between the United States and Mexico, prompting outrage and protests from Native American and conservationist groups.
On Monday, bulldozers and heavy machinery were spotted at the National Butterfly Centre in Misson, Texas, indicating the start of the border wall construction that will plough right through the protected habitat.
The funding for this portion of the wall was approved by Congress in the 2018 federal budget, shortly before the impasse between Democrats and the president halted another round of funding for the wall leading o a 35-day partial government shutdown.
As construction equipment were being offloaded on Monday morning, a group of 35 Native American members held a marching demonstration on the Rio Grande levee where the wall will be built.
Federal documents state the border wall include a 150-foot wide "enforcement zone", prompting fury that it will obliterate the tribal ancestors at the Eli Jackson Cemetery in San Juan.

Magnetic North Pole Has Shifted
Earth
Magnetic north is not where it used to be.
Since 2015, the place to which a compass points has been sprinting toward Siberia at a pace of more than 30 miles (48 kilometres) a year. And this week, after a delay caused by the month-long partial government shutdown in the United States, humans have finally caught up.
Scientists on Monday released an emergency update to the World Magnetic Model, which cellphone GPS systems and military navigators use to orient themselves.
But the north magnetic pole's inexorable drift suggests that something strange - and potentially powerful - is taking place deep within Earth. Only by tracking it, said University of Leeds geophysicist Phil Livermore, can scientists hope to understand what's going on.
The planet's magnetic field is generated nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometres) beneath our feet, in the swirling, spinning ball of molten metal that forms Earth's core.
Consequently, magnetic north doesn't align with geographic north (the end point of Earth's rotational axis), and it's constantly on the move. Records of ancient magnetic fields from extremely old rocks show that the poles can even flip - an event that has occurred an average of three times every million years.

Royal Jewelry Found
Sweden
The trial of a young man accused of stealing royal jewelry from a Swedish cathedral was halted on Tuesday when officials announced that the jewelry had been found in a rubbish bin in a Stockholm suburb.
Thieves made off with an orb and two crowns worth approximately 65 million Swedish crowns ($7.1 million) from a hilltop cathedral west of Stockholm in July 2018, before fleeing via a nearby lake system.
Police said they had recovered what they believed to be King Karl IX's funeral regalia in an area around Stockholm and that they were working "intensely" to confirm the items were the royal jewelry.
The stolen artifacts are so-called funeral regalia, which are placed inside, or on top of a coffin to denote a deceased royal's identity and social ranking. The orb was made for King Charles IX (1550-1611), and a crystal-studded gold crown was made for Charles' second wife, Kristina the Elder.
While some funeral regalia are kept in the cathedrals of Strangnas, Uppsala and Vasteras, Sweden's crown jewels are in vaults under the Royal Castle in Stockholm.

Scientists Appeal
New Zealand
Scientists are on the hunt for the owners of a USB stick full of photos and videos frozen in a "slab" of leopard seal poo for more than a year.
The slab of poo, which was collected at Oreti Beach on New Zealand's South Island in November 2017 and then frozen for a year, was being used to study the health of leopard seals, researchers said.
While thawing out the "scat" sample, as it is scientifically known, scientists found a USB stick, which contained a number of holiday photos.
The stick was in good condition, "considering where it had come from", and after leaving the stick to dry out for a few weeks, the team discovered files which may help to find the owner.
The USB contained photos of sealions and a video of a mother sealion and her baby frolicking in shallow waters.
