Mashups are made in pretty much every style. Pop, Rock. Techno, Hip Hop, & many others are regularly paired up, resulting in even more sub-genres. As someone with wide exposure to mashups, you'd think I'd have heard it all. Yet, there's many tracks I'd like to hear made, without me being the mixer. Here's a few specific tracks I'd enjoy hearing someone create. Perhaps you'll be inspired to suggest more, & possibly even mix some yourself.
Paul Krugman: Greta Versus the Greedy Grifters (NY Times Column)
The International Monetary Fund makes regular estimatesof worldwide subsidies to fossil fuels - subsidies that partly take the form of tax breaks and outright cash grants, but mainly involve not holding the industry accountable for the indirect costs it imposes. In 2017 it put these subsidies at $5.2 trillion; yes, that's trillion with a "T." For the U.S., the subsidies amounted to $649 billion, which is about $3 million for every worker employedin the extraction of coal, oil and gas.

Named for an English agricultural pioneer, what British rock band won their sole Grammy Award (the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental) in 1989 for their album Crest of a Knave?
Released in 1971, this album, recorded live at the Ice House in Pasadena, California, won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album the following year. What is the title of this highest charting solo comedy album by a woman?
This Is a Recording is a comedy album released in 1971 by American actress-comedian Lily Tomlin. The album consists of comic sketches of Tomlin in her most famous character, Ernestine, the nosy, aggressive, and sharp-tongued telephone operator. The album's tracks include monologues in which Ernestine tangles over the phone with Joan Crawford, Gore Vidal ("Mr. Veedle"), Martha Mitchell, and J. Edgar Hoover. It was recorded live at the intimate Ice House in Pasadena, California.
The album, Tomlin's first, won her a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. Tomlin became the first woman to win this award for a solo recording (in 1962 Elaine May won for an album with Mike Nichols; in the years since only Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Griffin among female comedians have won the award.) The album peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums list, the highest charting solo comedy album by a woman ever on the chart.

"This Is a Recording." The album featured sketches featuring Lily Tomlin's character, Ernestine the telephone switchboard operator. The general public discovered Tomlin from her work as a cast member on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In," starting in 1969. On "Laugh In" Tomlin's sketches as Ernestine were among the high points of those broadcasts. In 2017 Tomlin earned the unthinking enmity of the MAGA crowd by accurately saying Trump uses Nazi tactics.

• Sassy, a magazine for North American teenage girls, once had a column titled "Dear Boy," in which girls could write a question about relationships and a famous guy would answer it. One girl wrote, "There's this guy I really like. He tells everyone that he doesn't even like me as a friend, but when we're alone together we do things that are reserved for people who think of each other as more than friends. What do I do?" The famous guy answering that question was Thurston Moore, vocalist and guitarist of the band Sonic Youth. He wrote, "The guy's a jerk. I know that won't discourage you from liking him, but he's got a major personality flaw: disrespecting you. Next time you're alone with him and he wants to get 'friendly,' tell him your friend Thurston Moore wants to kick his ass. And then tell him why."

• A dog once saved the life of a Jew during the Holocaust. Ester Milshtein (a pseudonym) was first forced into the Warsaw Ghetto and then the Majdanek death camp near Lublin. Later, when she was 18 years old, she was transferred to the slave labor camp at Skarzynsko-Kamienna, where she made friends with the Kommandant's dog, a Great Dane she called Kelev. She talked to him, petted him, and sometimes she even ate some of his dog food, which was better than the food she and the other prisoners ate. Unfortunately, she contracted typhoid, which made her lose her hair and which reduced her weight to fewer than 80 pounds. At this time, she was 19 years old. Frequently, the prisoners were made to go through a selection process in which they were divided into two groups: One group would live, and the other group would die. Previously, she had survived several such selection processes, but this time, because of the effects of the typhoid, she was put in the group of people who would be murdered. While she was in this group of people, the dog she had named Kelev came to her, and she petted him and talked to him. The Kommandant noticed what she was doing, and he ordered her to be moved to the group of people who would live. Not long afterward, she was sent to work in a munitions factory in Buchenwald, and nine months later the Red (Russian) Army liberated her.
• Eric Carle, author and illustrator of many children's books, remembers when some apples fermented in a wood, producing apples with alcohol. Two brown bears smelled the apples, and they enjoyed a feast - a feast that made them tipsy. Being tipsy, they did what bears - and lots of human beings - do. They took a nap to sleep it off. Soon, the human beings in the area learned about the tipsy bears, and a hunter realized that it would be easy (but of course not sporting) to kill the two sleeping bears. However, someone had telephoned the police, who sent two police officers in a patrol car to keep an eye on the bears. The hunter arrived first and left his truck, carrying a gun to shoot the bears. Immediately after the hunter had gotten out of his truck, the police officers arrived. The hunter jumped back in his truck and drove off. The police officers kept an eye on the bears until they woke up, shook themselves, and safely wandered away.
• Following World War I was a period of unrest of Italy. During the unrest, 600 peasants, angry because they were out of work and hungry, broke down the gates of Enrico Caruso's villa and entered. When Mr. Caruso asked for a search warrant signed by the mayor, the peasants responded, "We are the mayor." He then asked that one car and enough food for 10 days be left behind, as after that time he and his wife would sail to America. The peasants wanted to take all the poultry, but Mr. Caruso asked that a white peahen be left alone, since she was sitting on 12 eggs due to hatch that day. The peasants laughed, said, "The signora is a peasant like us," and left the peahen alone. They also left behind a car and food. A few days afterward, the peasants sent to Mr. Caruso a small amount of money and a note expressing regret and gratitude.
Mr. Skunk musta been really PO'd - 24 hours later and the garage still retains a full fragrance. Ack.

Billie Eilish entered the most exclusive Grammy guild of all time on Sunday night when she swept the event's top four categories -- album (When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?), record and song of the year ("Bad Guy") and best new artist -- a feat nobody has done since 1981. That's when yacht rock captain Christopher Cross did it for the first, and only other, time.
Eilish became the youngest artist to complete the four-fecta, matching the feat pulled off by Cross for his pillowy hit "Sailing" and self-titled debut album, so of course Chris reached out to give some props to Billie and her producer/brother, Finneas.
"My record of winning the four General Field Grammys in one night stood for 39 years, until a talented young sister and brother came along," Cross wrote alongside a throwback pic of his big night along with a shot of Eilish and Finneas cradling their collective 10 Grammys; Eilish also won for best pop vocal album.
"Congratulations to Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell for their remarkable contribution to music history. Well done. Records are made to be broken, and I could not be any more pleased with their achievement. Welcome to the club, friends."
Talk show legend David Letterman was reluctant to host the Oscars from the start, to the point where he turned down the first offer, but he said yes the following year. His agent really wanted him to do it, and Letterman felt like he needed to overcome his fear.
"And then, almost immediately after accepting, I started to realize, 'Oh, geez, what if this doesn't go well?'" Letterman told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Tuesday. "And then, within a month, I had an awareness that, 'Oh, by the way, this isn't going to go well.' And it became a self-fulfilling prophecy."
As anyone who watched Letterman's performance can confirm, the funny man was not a huge hit with the star-studded audience. Although the telecast of that year's Academy Awards ceremony garnered the highest TV ratings in more than a decade, what most people remember about that show 25 years ago is the awkward moment when Letterman introduced Oprah Winfrey and Uma Thurman to each other. He then asked them if they had met Keanu Reeves.
"In my mind, we have these three people, highly respected and of great status in the popular culture, in the same room," Letterman explained, "so it's not like we're introducing 'Linda' and 'Diane' to 'Bob.' We have Oprah - I don't know that I know another Oprah, although there probably are hundreds of them now; same with Uma; and Keanu, I barely care about, but nonetheless, it's still a different name. And I just thought, 'Oh, this will be so fun and lighthearted.'"
Though the joke appeared to go over well enough watching it back on TV, Letterman knew immediately that the people in the room were confused rather than entertained. It was a bit that a producer suggested at the last minute.
Feel like you've seen this before? Over and over again?
Yes, it's Phil Connors, er Bill Murray, walking in Woodstock, Illinois, wearing a peacoat and a scarf. It's the same outfit Murray wore during the filming of "Groundhog Day."
Images captured by resident Ryan Christpher Finley show Murray filming in the town Saturday. Finley said he stumbled upon a production tent before Murray pulled in an SUV.
The Northwest Daily Herald reports Brian Doyle-Murray, who played the mayor in the movie, and Stephen Tobolowsky, who played "Needlenose Ned" Ryerson were also seen filming.
The publication reports the trio were in town for a commercial. It remains unclear when the clip will air, but some have noted that Super Bowl Sunday falls on Groundhog Day this year.
The architecture school that architect Frank Lloyd Wright started nearly 90 years ago is closing, officials announced Tuesday.
The School of Architecture at Taliesin, which encompasses Wright properties in Wisconsin and Arizona, will shutter in June. The school's governing board said in a statement the "gut-wrenching decision" was made after no agreement could be made with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to keep operating the school. Specific details about the negotiations between the school and foundation were not disclosed.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which is a separate entity, said in its own statement that the school did not have a sustainable business model. The boards of both organizations had come up with a proposal to keep the school going through the end of July 2021. The foundation would have donated use of Taliesin and Taliesin West to the school. But the school's board didn't unanimously approve the plan. The decision left the foundation's board "disappointed."
Wright launched the architecture school in 1932. He and his young apprentices would split their time between Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin and Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The school currently has 30 students. It will remain open for the spring semester. School officials say they are working on an agreement with Arizona State University's design school to allow those students' credits to transfer.
Newly available data suggests that China is the world's second-biggest arms producer, behind the United States and ahead of Russia, a leading conflict and armaments think-tank said on Monday.
A lack of transparency means the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has excluded China from its annual global rankings of arms makers, but it said credible financial information had become available for four major companies.
The data, covering the period from 2015 to 2017, allowed it to compile what it called the most comprehensive picture of Chinese companies' weapons production to date.
The four companies had combined estimated arms sales of $54.1 billion for 2017, it said, which would put them among the top 20 arms producers in the world.
Total U.S. arms sales in 2017 were $226.6 billion, and in Russia, $37.7 billion, according to the think tank's Top 100 list for that year.
A Florida man who repeatedly harassed parents of shooting victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School has been arrested for possessing the identification of one of the parents, authorities said.
Wolfgang Halbig, 73, was arrested Monday on a charge that he was in unlawful possession of another person's identification, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
Halbig was a guest on the radio show of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. He's been sued by the Sandy Hook families for defamation for falsely claiming that the massacre never happened. The 2012 mass shooting left 20 first graders and six adults dead at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Halbig repeatedly emailed several people and law enforcement agencies the Social Security number, birth date and other information of Leonard Pozner, whose 6-year-old son, Noah, died at Sandy Hook.
Pozner reported to sheriff officials that Halbig has continued to harass him over the internet since 2018.
DNA tests have revealed that Belgium's former King Albert II is the biological father of Belgian artist Delphine Boel, a lawyer for the retired monarch said on Monday, putting an end to a decade-long paternity claim.
Albert, who abdicated six years ago in favor of his son Philippe, had long contested Boel's claim. He gave a DNA sample in May after a Belgian court order.
The tests showed that he is Boel's biological father, a statement from Albert's lawyer said.
Boel has said that she just wants recognition that the former king is her father rather than any money. She is younger than Albert's three children with Queen Paola, his Italian wife.
Boel's identity became a topic of public debate after publication in 1999 of a biography of Paola which alleged that Albert had a long extramarital relationship from which a daughter was born in the 1960s.
Following up on their landmark 2016 study, researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine found that a one-time, single-dose treatment of psilocybin, a compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, combined with psychotherapy appears to be associated with significant improvements in emotional and existential distress in cancer patients. These effects persisted nearly five years after the drug was administered.
In the original study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, psilocybin produced immediate, substantial, and sustained improvements in anxiety and depression and led to decreases in cancer-related demoralization and hopelessness, improved spiritual well-being, and increased quality of life. At the final 6.5-month follow-up assessment, psilocybin was associated with enduring antianxiety and antidepressant effects. Approximately 60 percent to 80 percent of participants continued with clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety, sustained benefits in existential distress and quality of life, as well as improved attitudes toward death.
The present study, publishing online Jan. 28 in the same journal, is a long-term follow-up (with assessments at about 3 years and 4.5 years following single-dose psilocybin administration) of a subset of participants from the original trial. The study reports on sustained reductions in anxiety, depression, hopelessness, demoralization, and death anxiety at both follow-up points.
Approximately 60 percent to 80 percent of participants met the criteria for clinically significant antidepressant or anxiolytic responses at the 4.5-year follow-up. Participants overwhelmingly (71 to 100 percent) attributed positive life changes to the psilocybin-assisted therapy experience and rated it among the most personally meaningful and spiritually significant experiences of their lives.
