M Is FOR MASHUP - January 16th, 2013
Modern Mashup Talking
By DJ Useo
Sjoersje
( soundcloud.com/sjoersje ) is a new mashup name to many of us, but from the polished, inventive mixes he posts he
comes across like a seasoned professional. From my ?rst exposure to his take on bootlegging, I found an attractive, memorable ?ow of mashups. Others respond in a like manner to his mixes. So much so that when he announced his intention to helm a collection of mashups themed along one group he found himself surrounded by super submissions. There's been many mashup albums themed along groups before, including Fleetwood Mac, The Clash, Depeche Mode and tons more. The fans of mashups ate them up & requested more. Sjoersje has clearly picked up on what the market wants.
Now what group would titillate Sjoersje and others to put their energies into a complete mashup album? Here's the rub. It's
Modern Talking! Who? You say. Modern Talking. A a German synthpop duo consisting of Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen.
I've had some exposure to them (I've had exposure to most music, lol) and thought to myself "that's an eclectic choice." An
eclectic choice is right up my alley though, to be honest. Well, Sjoersje's instincts proved true as the ?nal released album
'MODERN MASHING'
( www.mashstix.com/ModernMashing.php ) is one killer listen.
Here's a video preview of the tunes.

Sjoersje assembled large talent with this collection if you judge by the results. Mixers that are well known and appreciated by me
like POMATIC, Ed Home, PartyBen, Winkar Lopez, & more. The new names to me are all also totally welcome to my ears.
RRodd, Lizzart, Rick Dangerous and the rest are all folk whose work I'll be looking forward to hearing more of. There's 21 tracks
in all, with a great batch of videos already, & more to come.

After this new mashup tribute album to them, I wager quite a few more people will know of Modern Talking, and Sjoersje as well.

Native American Graffiti Restored
'Occupation of Alcatraz'
Putting graffiti in a national park is a federal offense. So it's more than a little unusual that the National Park Service is not only allowing, but has actually restored some graffiti left during a protest held by Native Americans inside the former prison site Alcatraz.
The once-notorious prison, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Fransisco, was occupied from the winter of 1969 through the spring of 1971 by a group of Native Americans after the prison had closed.
Hand-painted at the time on a prison water tower were the words, "PEACE AND FREEDOM WELCOME HOME OF THE FREE INDIAN LAND."
Other pieces of graffiti left on the island include inscriptions such as, "Custer had it coming."
Hired to restore the graffiti was Eloy Martinez, a Ute who lives in Oakland and who was part of the occupation, according to the paper. The restoration project took about a year and cost $1.5 million.

Alters Sunday Schedule Again
ABC
It appears that the great Sunday night experiment for ABC's "Don't Trust the Palin in Apt. 23" and "Happy Endings" is over.
The two comedies, which were added to the network's Sunday night schedule, have been pulled from the Sunday roster, with a repeat of the reality series "Shark Tank" taking the 10 to 11 p.m. slot that the comedies previously occupied.
"Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the Palin," which regularly air Tuesdays at 9 and 9:30 p.m., respectively, began airing additional episodes on Sundays beginning January 6 to replace the freshman drama "666 Park Avenue," which itself had been pulled from the schedule. (The network plans to air the remaining episodes of "666 Park Avenue" this summer.)
However, neither show managed to find much of an audience in their new timeslots. On January 13, "Happy Endings" matched a series low in the 18-49 demographic preferred by advertisers with a 1.0 rating/2 share, while "Don't Trust the Palin," which stars Krysten Ritter and James Van Der Beek, dropped 11 percent to a series low of 0.8/2.
By contrast, for their most recent Tuesday night airings, "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the Palin" drew a 1.4/4 and 1.1/3, respectively.

Conservatives Looking For Attention
Sundance
A conservative Utah group believes the Sundance Film Festival's lineup featuring 'obscene' movies is at odds with Utah's culture of family values, and wants the state to pull its financial backing.
The Sutherland Institute says the state shouldn't back a festival that features films about porn stars and women having affairs with one another's adult sons. He's referring to a pair of movies featuring well-known Hollywood actresses: "Lovelace" starring Amanda Seyfried, and "Two Mothers" starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright. "Lovelace" is rated R. "Two Mothers" is not yet rated.
The Salt Lake City-based institute isn't saying Sundance should leave Utah - but rather that the state should pull its financial backing, said Derek Monson, Sutherland Institute's director of public policy.
Utah expects to spend $300,000 supporting the festival again this year, said Michael Sullivan, a spokesman for the Governor's Office of Economic Development. The money comes from the economic opportunity section of the state's incentive program. It's used to support and sponsor the event and take advantage of the marketing and branding opportunities for the state of Utah.
The festival is one of the state's largest annual money-makers. The University of Utah estimated that last year's festival brought $80.3 million in economic impact for the state.

Canceled Amid Protests
"All My Babies' Mamas"
"All My Babies' Mamas" has been pruned from the family tree by the Oxygen network.
Oxygen has decided to cancel the controversial reality program ahead of its scheduled premiere, amid protests saying that the one-hour special would reinforce stereotypes about black men.
The special, which was being developed by Oxygen for a spring premiere, generated widespread anger due to reports that it would have followed rapper Shawty Lo as he tends to his family, which includes 11 children from 10 different women. (In actuality, Shawty Lo and his family were among a number of families that were being considered for the show,)

Sanctimonious School System
Oxnard
A middle school teacher who was fired after students learned she had appeared in pornography has lost her appeal to return to the classroom, her lawyer said Tuesday.
A three-judge panel unanimously decided Stacie Halas, 32, was unfit for the classroom. Halas was fired in April from her job as a science teacher at Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard after online videos of her in porn were discovered by students and teachers.
"Although (Halas') pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague," Judge Julie Cabos-Owen wrote in a 46-page decision issued Friday by the Commission on Professional Competence.
Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn't find any images of her on the Internet - but they were using the school's computers, which don't allow access to porn.
Teachers then showed administrators downloads of Halas' sex videos from their smartphones.

Charged With Battery
Edward Furlong
Actor Edward Furlong has been charged with misdemeanor battery on an ex-girlfriend during an altercation on Sunday morning.
The actor has been in jail since his arrest in West Hollywood, Calif., on suspicion of battery and for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant on another domestic violence battery case involving the same woman.
He has also been involved in a custody dispute with his ex-wife and faces a probation violation for contempt of court in a Los Angeles case. A hearing in that case has been scheduled for Feb. 15.
Furlong was charged in the domestic violence case in December but failed to appear at a court hearing.

Son Charged With Assault
Rand Paul
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul's son has been charged with assaulting a flight attendant during a trip from Kentucky to North Carolina.
The Charlotte Observer reported over the weekend that 19-year-old William Paul was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female by aggressive physical force. The paper had previously reported that he also was charged with underage drinking, disorderly conduct and being intoxicated and disruptive.
The newspaper quoted Lt. Shawn Crooks as saying all the charges against Paul were filed the day of the incident, Jan. 5.
The son of the Republican senator from Kentucky and grandson of former presidential candidate Ron Paul was arrested after his plane landed at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Angry Aide
Mrs. Bachmann
When Michele Bachmann's presidential campaign ended, she faced a decision: pay former aides the money they were owed, or make them sign a nondisclosure agreement first? She chose poorly. A still-unpaid aides has begun leaking colorful stories to the press. Bachmann's former Iowa field coordinator Peter Waldron now tells BuzzFeed's Andrew Kaczynski that Bachmann's famous debate coach, Brett O'Donnell, had a "Rasputin-like" relationship with the congresswoman. Waldron said O'Donnell's power was so great that he forbid Bachmann from sleeping in the same bed as her husband while on the campaign trail.
Now, this could be yet another instance when the act of being female strongly colors how a person's actions are interpreted. Lots of male sports coaches urge their male athletes to avoid sex before games to boost their performance. But it seems a little weird in a non-sports context. Waldron alleges other odd behavior:
"He prohibited her husband, Dr. Marcus Bachmann, from sleeping in the same room with wife while on the campaign trail," Waldron said in an email to BuzzFeed. "He prohibited legendary consultants Ed Rollins and Ed Goeas from attending debate prep sessions. He told her when she could get off the bus (Waterloo event with Gov. Perry), he wrote most of the words that came out of her mouth, he wrote all of her speeches."

Pope's Secretary
"Gorgeous George"
Archbishop Georg Ganswein, Pope Benedict's private secretary, who has been dubbed "Gorgeous George" by the Italian media, is now a real-life cover boy.
The prelate has landed on the cover of Vanity Fair.
The cover on the Italian edition of the magazine shows the 56-year-old archbishop smiling, his blue eyes beaming, above a headline that reads "Father Georg - It's not a sin to be beautiful."
The magazine calls Ganswein "The George Clooney of St Peter's" and says it dedicated a cover story to honor his recent promotion to the rank of archbishop and as recognition of his growing power in the Roman Catholic Church.
A German like the pope, he was also promoted to the job of Prefect of the Pontifical Household, a position that will significantly increase his power as the pope gets older and frailer.

The Atlantic
The Atlantic apologized on Tuesday for posting a sponsored advertorial from the Church of Scientology, celebrating its leader David Miscavige.
The sponsored post, which went live Monday at 9:25 a.m. PT, touted 2012 as "milestone year" for the secretive church, which has been steeped in controversy throughout the years.
It was taken down about 8:30 p.m. and replaced by a message saying the magazine had "temporarily suspended this advertising campaign pending a review of our policies that govern sponsor content and subsequent comment threads."
The Atlantic issued the following statement:
We screwed up. It shouldn't have taken a wave of constructive criticism - but it has - to alert us that we've made a mistake, possibly several mistakes. We now realize that as we explored new forms of digital advertising, we failed to update the policies that must govern the decisions we make along the way. It's safe to say that we are thinking a lot more about these policies after running this ad than we did beforehand. In the meantime, we have decided to withdraw the ad until we figure all of this out. We remain committed to and enthusiastic about innovation in digital advertising, but acknowledge - sheepishly - that we got ahead of ourselves. We are sorry, and we're working very hard to put things right.
The timing of the ad was no surprise. New Yorker writer Lawrence Wright's book-length exposé on Scientology - based on his 2011 profile of former Scientologist Paul Haggis - is due out Thursday.

Nagisa Ôshima
Japanese film director Nagisa Oshima, best known for the sexually explicit film "In the Realm of the Senses" and "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence", has died from pneumonia, aged 80.
The Hollywood Reporter said Oshima died on Tuesday in Fujisawa, south of Tokyo, where he had been living since retiring from making movies.
The British Film Institute described Oshima as one of the major directors of the new wave of Japanese cinema in the 1960s whose politically charged films contrasted starkly with the stylistic conservatism of classical Japanese filmmaking.
A law graduate, he began his filmmaking career at the age of 26 with the 1959 movie "A Town of Love and Hope".
But his international notoriety was ensured in 1976 with "In the Realm of the Senses," a graphic portrayal of insatiable sexual desire between a hotel owner and one of his maids in 1930s Japan.
The film contained scenes of unsimulated sexual activity and had to be registered as a French production to bypass Japanese censorship laws. Its uncensored version remains unavailable in Japan.
Oshima won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978 for his film "Empire of Passion," another erotic tale.
He teamed up with British actor/singer David Bowie on the 1983 film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," based on author Laurens van der Post's experiences as a prisoner of war in Japan during World War Two.
Oshima suffered a stroke in 1996 but recovered enough to return briefly to filmmaking, making his final film "Taboo" in 1999, a movie about gay samurai.
