Hooray! CULTURE BULLY Presents 2008 MASHED
By DJ Useo
Well, that was a swell year, as I measure them, & I measure them by the
music, especially the mashups. As I expected, the flood of new tracks
remained at a higher level than can be kept up with. This translates
into a large amount of bootleg collections. One of the best is the
brand-spankin' new collection from the generous folk at
CULTURE BULLY (www.culturebully.com/culture-bully-presents-2008-mashed). CULTURE BULLY is one fine site for those
interested in keeping up with current official & bootleg
releases. They routinely post informing articles on new
releases, concerts, & the hottest mashups, as well.In following the
pattern set by last years' CULTURE BULLY mashup collection. The new
CULTURE BULLY PRESENTS 2008 MASHED offers tons of recent popular FM
hits newly-mixed by a flock of International bootleggers.
Chris DeLine, the guiding force of CULTURE BULLY describes the 2008
MASHED collection thusly -
"2008 MASHED is an album that utilizes the popular, the outrageous, the
kitschy & the underappreciated. It combines elements of the year that
was represented by the collected efforts of a hodgepodge of
producers from around the world."
Mr. DeLine does not overstate the matter, either. A quick perusal of the
DJ's reveals not only talented, well-known producers such as
Lobsterdust, King.Of.Pants., & ToTom, but displays the truly worldwide
nature of the release. Among the countries represented you will
find Austria, USA, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands &
finally the Republic Of Ireland. At this rate I expect CULTURE BULLY
will branch out to other worlds next year.
I was invited to submit a track with the instruction to take some well known
aspect of last years' music scene & give it a good
bootlegging. At first I was messing around with a Ne-Yo track, but I
quickly noticed the Coldplay track was a fine match for the
'Fidget-style' Wolfgang Gartner I wanted to sample. None of us knew
what the others were working on, but still, a cohesive whole
emerged, as you can hear in the long-mix version of the comp
available at the same site. I find that I actually prefer the mixed
version.
Here's a look at the collection on a track by track basis. (More info

Cancels Middle East Performances
Daniel Barenboim
Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim and his orchestra of Arab and Israeli musicians have canceled performances in the Middle East this weekend because of fighting between Israel and Hamas, he said Tuesday.
Two concerts were scheduled for this weekend - one each in Doha, Qatar and Cairo - but Barenboim said organizers in those countries called off the shows amid security concerns.
"Officially, the concerts are postponed and we hope to reschedule," Barenboim said. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will perform works by Beethoven and Brahms at the Berlin Staatsoper on Monday, and the remainder of the group's 10th anniversary tour of other cities - including Moscow, Vienna and Milan - will continue.
Argentinean-born Barenboim has advocated peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and heavily criticized a military solution. He started the orchestra together with the late Palestinian-American intellectual and activist Edward Said.

Hospital Performance
Eddie Izzard
When the father of a victim of the Mumbai terror attacks wrote Eddie Izzard asking the comedian to send a note to his injured, bedridden son, Izzard came up with a better idea.
The comedian did a 90-minute stand-up routine over the holidays at the London hospital where 28-year-old Will Pike was recovering after the November attacks.
Pike broke three vertebrae, both his arms and shattered his pelvis after falling from a makeshift rope he'd made from bedsheets when terrorists took over the Mumbai hotel where he and his girlfriend were staying.
Pike had tickets to one of Izzard's recent performances, but had to miss it.

You couldn't miss the wedding band on Craig Ferguson's ring finger when he returned to CBS' "The Late Late Show" from his holiday break.
Ferguson held his left hand up to the camera and announced that he'd gotten married. The 46-year-old talk-show host said he'd tied the knot with art dealer Megan Wallace Cunningham.
He suggested that he and Megan be referred to as "Cragan," like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are known as "Brangelina."

Colbert's Sidekick For A Day
Alan Colmes
Divorced from his longtime co-host Sean Hannity, Alan Colmes was adopted by Stephen Colbert - for a day, at least.
On Monday's "The Colbert Report," Colbert introduced the Fox News commentator as his new co-host.
It was the first episode of the Comedy Central show following the holiday break, and Colbert unveiled a completely new format, dubbing the show "Colbert & Colmes." The new design featured a "C & C" graphic and a chair behind the desk for Colmes (albeit one a foot or two shorter than Colbert's).
At the end of the show, the comic said he and Colmes would be back every night with "hard-hitting political opinions" (pointing to himself) "and top-notch listening" (pointing to Colmes).
But an argument ensued when Colmes pointed out errors in a metaphor Colbert concocted. The two parted ways with Colmes exclaiming "Boo-yah, Colmes away!" before, in a puff of smoke, he turned into a bat.

Berlin Philharmonic
Fans of Germany's renowned Berlin Philharmonic can now follow the orchestra's performances from anywhere in the world through a new "digital concert hall" accessible via the Internet.
Tuesday's performance - directed by Sir Simon Rattle and featuring Johannes Brahms' First Symphony - will be the first to be broadcast online from the philharmonic's home concert hall in the German capital.
Single tickets to follow the online performance live, or to access it on demand at any point in a 48-hour period after the broadcast, cost 9.90EU ($13.45). A season ticket for 149EU gives viewers access to all concerts during the season.

NBC Bumps
Ann Coulter
NBC News denied Monday that conservative author Ann Coulter has been banned from the network after "Today" dropped her from Tuesday's program because of breaking-news events.
The Coulter incident garnered huge headlines on the Drudge Report, which reported that network sources said NBC was not going to allow the frequent guest to appear any more.
That's not true, NBC News said Monday. Coulter's segment was dropped from the schedule because of news that the show was expecting to cover in the Gaza Strip with the Israeli military action there and in Washington with the Obama transition. "Today" had booked former British prime minister Tony Blair. Coulter was to promote her new book, "Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America."
On Sunday, watchdog group Media Matters of America noted what it called several cases of "inflammatory rhetoric" in a copy of her book. It also questioned whether NBC would "help Coulter sell" the book by booking her.

Charges To Be Dropped
Josh Brolin
Prosecutors will drop charges against "W." stars Josh Brolin and Jeffrey Wright over an altercation last year at a bar in the Louisiana city of Shreveport, the actors' attorney said on Tuesday.
City prosecutors agreed at a court hearing on Tuesday to drop the charges within 60 days, provided Brolin and Wright pay $130 each in court costs, their attorney Blair Berk said.
Brolin, the son of actor James Brolin, and Wright were charged with interference with police officers in the wake of a disturbance at a Shreveport bar in July 2007.
Police pepper-sprayed both Brolin and Wright, while Wright was also hit with an electric shock from a Taser weapon, Berk said.

Connecticut DUI
Rip Torn
Actor Rip Torn has pleaded not guilty to drunken driving charges in Connecticut, nearly two years after being fined and losing his license for similar charges in New York.
The 77-year-old Salisbury resident appeared in Bantam Superior Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane.
State police say a trooper stopped Torn on Dec. 14 on Route 44 shortly after he had left the White Hart Inn in Salisbury, a town of about 4,000 people in the northwestern corner of the state that borders New York and Massachusetts.
Police say Torn was driving in the breakdown lane in his 1994 Subaru with a Christmas tree tied to the top.
He failed part of a field sobriety exam, then gave up after saying the ground wasn't level enough, state police said. He also refused to take a breathalyzer test and used profanity while in the trooper's cruiser, police said.

Drops Drug Appeal In Norway
Amy Winehouse
British singer Amy Winehouse dropped her appeal in a Norwegian drug case and will accept a fine for illegal marijuana possession in 2007, her attorney said Tuesday.
Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested during a concert stop in the western city of Bergen in October 2007 on charges of possessing 7 grams (1/4-ounce) of marijuana.
They were held overnight and released after paying fines of 3,000 kroner ($428).
Winehouse, 25, later appealed the fine, claiming Norwegian police made mistakes in the case. An initial trial date in March 2008 was postponed at the request of her attorney, and Winehouse was summoned last month by the Bergen appeals court to make her case on Jan. 12.

Seeks Change Of Venue
Roman Polanski
Oscar-winning fugitive filmmaker Roman Polanski wants to disqualify the entire Los Angeles County court system from handling the sexual misconduct case that led him to flee the United States for France three decades ago.
Lawyers for the 75-year-old director filed court papers late Monday requesting that the matter be referred to the California Judicial Council for "selection of an impartial, out-of-county judicial officer."
The latest legal move comes a month after Polanski's lawyers filed a motion seeking to dismiss the case altogether, citing "extraordinary new evidence" of prosecutorial and judicial misconduct.
A hearing on the motion to drop the case is set for January 21, but Polanski's lawyers have said he has no plans to return for the proceeding. The District Attorney's Office filed its formal response Tuesday opposing a dismissal.

Dress Code Pay Out
JetBlue
An airline passenger forced to cover his T-shirt because it displayed Arabic script has been awarded 240,000 dollars in compensation, campaigners said Monday.
Raed Jarrar received the pay out on Friday from two US Transportation Security Authority officials and from JetBlue Airways following the August 2006 incident at New York's JFK Airport, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced.
Jarrar, a US resident, was apprehended as he waited to board a JetBlue flight from New York to Oakland, California, and told to remove his shirt, which had written on it in Arabic: "We will not be silent."
Jarrar eventually agreed to cover his shirt with another provided by JetBlue. He was allowed aboard but his seat was changed from the front to the back of the aircraft.

Offer Evolution Clue
Pink Iguanas
Pink iguanas unknown to Charles Darwin during his visits to the Galapagos islands may provide evidence of species divergence far earlier than the English naturalist's famous finches, researchers said Monday.
The findings also for the first time describe the black-striped reptiles -- first seen in 1986 and only a few more times since -- as a new species, said Gabriele Gentile of the University Tor Vergata in Rome, who led the study.
They also add to understanding of the evolution of species on the remote islands, which remain much as they were millions of years ago and which inspired Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Many of its species are found nowhere else.
Darwin did not visit areas inhabited by the pink land iguana and so missed the species, whose existence suggests diversification in the Galapagos happened some five million years ago. That is far earlier than attributed to most other Galapagos species like the finches, Gentile said.

Ron Asheton
Ron Asheton, the guitarist for the Stooges whose raw sound helped inspire the first generation of punk musicians, has died. He was 60.
Asheton was a founding member of the Stooges, the influential protopunk band formed in Ann Arbor in 1967, along with his brother, Scott.
"For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr. Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not," the band said in a written statement. "As a musician Ron was The Guitar God, idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him."
Asheton's powerful, distorted guitar on songs like "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "T.V. Eye" was a hallmark of the group's sound. His "technically adept but also beautifully raw" style was heavily influenced by free jazz and created "beauty out of noise," said Brian Cogan, a punk-music historian at Molloy College on New York's Long Island.
When he was named the 29th greatest guitarist of all time in 2003 by Rolling Stone, the magazine described Asheton as "the Detroit punk who made the Stooges' music reek like a puddle of week-old biker sweat."
After recording three albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Stooges split and Iggy Pop went on to a successful solo career. Asheton played guitar for bands including the New Order, New Race, Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival.
In 2003, Asheston reunited with the rest of the Stooges and a new album, "The Weirdness," was released in 2007.
Ronald Asheton was born July 17, 1948, in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his sister Kathy and his brother Scott, who is The Stooges' drummer.

Ned Tanen
Ned Tanen, the former president of Universal Pictures who championed such filmmakers as George Lucas and John Hughes, died Monday of natural causes at his home in Santa Monica. He was 77.
Tanen ran Universal from 1976 to 1982. He presided over two record box office years: 1980 and 1982, which included "On Golden Pond," "Coal Miner's Daughter," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial."
He resigned from Universal in December 1982 amid the success of "E.T." Citing "burnout," he told the Wall Street Journal he was tired of playing the "Hollywood game."
But Tanen couldn't leave the film business that easily. He took on producing roles in three "Brat Pack" films: Hughes' "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles," and Joel Schumacher's "St. Elmo's Fire."
Tanen began a four-year stint as president of Paramount in 1984, continuing his box office successes. The studio finished No. 1 in 1986 and 1987, and Tanen's slates included such hits as "Top Gun" and "Ghost." After retiring from the executive suites for a second time, he produced such films as "Guarding Tess," "Cops and Robbersons" and "Mary Reilly."
Born in Los Angeles on September 20, 1931, Tanen started out as a talent agent at MCA and then took on executive roles at MCA's music division where he worked with such entertainers as Neil Diamond, Elton John, Bill Cosby and Olivia Newton-John.
During Tanen's early years at Universal, the studio was known for B-movies but awoke to the potential of the so-called youth audience, which became Tanen's specialty. He greenlighted such hits as "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and Lucas' "American Graffiti." Propelled by the great successes of "Jaws" and "Animal House," he was elevated to higher posts, becoming president of Universal's motion picture division.
Tanen is survived by his partner, Donna Dubrow; two daughters and three grandchildren.
