• Comedian Bill Dana grew up in poverty. Often, he, his siblings, and his parents were forced to hide from bill collectors. While the family sat in a room with drawn curtains and a locked door, the bill collector would bang on the door and shout, “I know you’re in there.” Someone in the family would always softly say, “We know we’re in here, too.”
• Perhaps the wealthiest Monty Python member is hard-working John Cleese. A British newspaper once called several celebrities to see what they would do if they won £1 million in a competition. Among the celebrities they called was Python member Graham Chapman, who said, “I would give it to John Cleese so he could take the afternoon off.”
• Back when magicians Penn Jillette and Teller (this single name is now his legal name) were performing on the streets, Penn very effectively convinced members of the audience to give generously after a show by telling them, “Remember: I’m six-six, I have three very sharp knives, and I have an excellent memory.”
• As a young comedian, Lily Tomlin created a sensation at the Improv by arriving in a chauffeur-driven limousine. Actually, she didn’t have much money. The chauffeur had been parked in the theater district, waiting until a play was over. Lily paid him $5 to take her to the Improv.
• Fanny Brice was a huge star who made thousands of dollars a week. George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart told her that they would write a play for her if she would agree to be paid $1,000 a week. She declined, saying, “If I take $1,000 a week, everybody in America will be writing plays for me.”
• Wilson Mizner came from a good family who supplied many diplomats to America, but he hung around with lowlifes. One day, a friend who was a burglar asked him for a loan of $50. Mr. Mizner gave it to him, but asked, “What’s the matter—doesn’t it get dark anymore?”
• In the 1960s TV series Get Smart, enemy agents continually tried to assassinate Control agent Maxwell Smart. The constant bombings, shootings, and knife attacks on Max perplexed Max’s landlord—until Max told him that he worked for the Internal Revenue Service.
• Ben Turpin was a silent-film comedian who was amazed at his own success, including financial success; he often walked into public places and introduced himself by saying, “Ben Turpin! Three thousand dollars a week!”
• Some charity benefits don’t make money. Comedian Eddie Cantor once showed a committee how to save $500—by not holding the benefit at all!

• Jewish comedian Sam Levenson grew up in a very poor household. Gas was expensive and definitely not to be wasted. Therefore, before leaving the house en masse for any length of time, the family always turned the gas off. One day, they forgot. After the family returned home from a visit, Mr. Levenson’s Mama noticed that the boiler was steaming. Immediately, she barked two orders: “Somebody shut off the gas!” and “Everybody into the bathtub!”
• In the late 1880s, a young woman had her fortune told by a gypsy, who said to her, “You will marry and have a son known all over the world.” The young woman did marry, and one of her sons was Larry Fine, who became a member of the world-famous comedy team known as the Three Stooges. Whenever Larry’s mother went to see a Three Stooges short comedy film at the cinema, she would shout, “That’s my son!”
• Country comedian Jerry Clower grew up in an impoverished family in rural Mississippi. When he was a youngster, his mother used to fix fried chicken, then tell her children to save the chicken back and neck and feet for her, as they were her favorite parts. When he grew up, of course, Mr. Clower realized that his mother loved her children and she wanted them to eat the best parts of the chicken.
On La Gomera, one of Spain's Canary Islands, a traditional language, Silbo Gomero, also known as El Silbo, is still used. How does El Silbo differ from most other languages?
The lord of Mann (Manx: Çhiarn Vannin) is the lord proprietor and head of state of the Isle of Man. The current lord proprietor and head of state is Elizabeth II.
The title is not correctly used on its own. Since 1399, the kings and lords of Mann were vassals of the kings of England, and subsequently of Great Britain and the United Kingdom, who was the ultimate sovereign of the island. This right of 'lord proprietor' was revested into the Crown by the Isle of Man Purchase Act 1765 for £70,000 and a £2,000 annuity, and hence ceased to exist separately. King George III became the first British monarch to reign over the Isle of Man as Lord of Mann in 1765. However, for reasons of culture and tradition, the title Lord of Mann continues to be used. For these reasons, the correct formal usage, as used in the Isle of Man for the Loyal Toast, is The Queen, Lord of Mann.
The title is now Lord of Mann regardless of gender. However, during her reign, Queen Victoria was styled as Lady of Mann.

It was a Saturday in the spring of 2017, and a ninth grade student in Pennsylvania was having a bad day. She had just learned that she had failed to make the varsity cheerleading squad and would remain on junior varsity.
The student expressed her frustration on social media, sending a message on Snapchat to about 250 friends. The message included an image of the student and a friend with their middle fingers raised, along with text expressing a similar sentiment. Using a curse word four times, the student expressed her dissatisfaction with “school,” “softball,” “cheer” and “everything.”
Though Snapchat messages are ephemeral by design, another student took a screenshot of this one and showed it to her mother, a coach. The school suspended the student from cheerleading for a year, saying the punishment was needed to “avoid chaos” and maintain a “teamlike environment.”
The student sued the school district, winning a sweeping victory in the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in Philadelphia. The court said the First Amendment did not allow public schools to punish students for speech outside school grounds.
Next month, at its first private conference after the holiday break, the Supreme Court will consider whether to hear the case, Mahanoy Area School District v. BL, No. 20-255. The 3rd Circuit’s ruling is in tension with decisions from several other courts, and such splits often invite Supreme Court review.
Actress Billie Lourd took to Instagram to empathize with those who have lost loved ones due to the pandemic while honoring her late mother Carrie Fisher on the fourth anniversary of the Hollywood icon and Star Wars legend’s death.
“Sending my love and strength to everyone out there that’s missing a loved one they’ve lost,” Lourd wrote on Sunday. “Especially those of you who have lost someone during this crazy year. You’re not alone.”
Fisher died on December 27, 2016, after suffering a heart attack on a flight to Los Angeles. Fisher’s mother and Lourd’s grandmother Debbie Reynolds, died the next day as a result of a stroke.
This continues Lourd’s tributes to her mother and grandmother. In 2019, she remembered Fisher with a song. She also “appeared” as Fisher’s iconic Princess/General Leia in a digitally altered scene in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was filmed before Fisher’s death. She also played the granddaughter of Reynolds’s character on the recent Will & Grace reboot.
A homeless man in Atlanta has received praise after he risked his life to rescue all the animals at the W-Underdogs animal shelter after it caught fire.
CNN reports that 53-year-old Keith Walker ran into the shelter on Dec. 18 after a fire started in the kitchen. "I was nervous as hell, I'm not going to lie. I was really scared to go in there with all that smoke. But God put me there to save those animals," Walker said. "If you love a dog, you can love anyone in the world. My dog is my best friend, and I wouldn't be here without him, so I knew I had to save all those other dogs."
In a post on the W-Underdogs Facebook page, founder Gracie Hamlin said the shelter was left unihabitable. Thankfully, W-Underdogs was just one week away from moving to a newer shelter elsewhere in Atlanta, and the animals have all since been moved there. "He is my guardian angel," Hamlin said of Walker. "Even the firefighters didn't want to handle the dogs. They called animal control, but Keith was already in the building pulling out the cats and dogs until they were all safe."
Hamlin added that she has known Walker, who has been homeless since he was at least 13, because he's come to visit his dog Bravo at the shelter every night. He was on his way to the shelter to pick up Bravo when he spotted the fire, and he immediately ran in to save the six dogs and ten cats in the building. "I can't thank him enough," Hamlin added. "I'm still in disbelief, because I've been around a fire and I know how fast they flare up. He is my hero."
The emergency room doctor who was reportedly removed from his hospital’s rota schedule for publicly calling out Donald Trump said he stands by his words and does not regret criticising the president for his “insanity” to wave at supporters while getting treatment for Covid-19.
Dr James Phillips, who is chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University, was removed from the schedule at Walter Reed as attending physician after he slammed Mr Trump for waving at his supporters from a car while he was infected with coronavirus and risking the lives of accompanying Secret Service agents in the car.
“Today, I worked my final shift at Walter Reed ER,” said Dr Phillips wrote on Twitter late on Sunday, he served his last day as attending physician.
In October, two days after being admitted to the hospital with Covid-19, Mr Trump was driven around outside the medical centre with Secret Service agents as he waved at his maskless supporters.
Dr Phillips blasted the president in a now-deleted tweet calling the drive-by stunt a political theatre and insanity, as well as appearing in a number of interviews on TV.
The vice chairman of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee has been hospitalised twice since contracting Covid-19 at a White House holiday party in early December.
Tom Mountain told The Boston Globe: “I didn’t listen to the warnings of my own family, and now I’m paying the price.”
Mr Mountain attended the annual White House Hanukkah party on 9 December at which very few people wore a face mask, despite surging cases of the coronavirus.
“No one can ever say for sure exactly where they got it, but I’ll say this: Before the party, I was in perfectly good health,” he said. “Three days later, I was in the hospital with Covid, and it was all downhill from there.”
He admits that his wife was strongly against him going to the party and refused to go herself. Now she, their son, daughter-in-law, and his mother-in-law have all tested positive for the virus.
Over the weekend, a particularly awful pair of words started trending on social media: super gonorrhea. That’s because the World Health Organization recently warned that the pandemic is helping fuel the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including the bacteria that cause gonorrhea. Unfortunately, the situation is only likely to get worse.
Antibiotic resistance has been a slow-brewing crisis for decades, but the effects are finally becoming hard to ignore. Currently, so-called superbugs are thought to kill around 35,000 Americans annually, as well as 700,000 people globally.
One of the more worrying superbug threats today is Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the namesake bacteria that cause gonorrhea. Gonorrhea isn’t usually deadly and often has no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to complications like arthritis, joint pain, and skin rashes, as well as infertility and chronic pelvic pain. The bacteria can also be passed from a mother to her baby during delivery, triggering an infection that can be fatal or cause serious problems like blindness. Notable symptoms include a green or yellow discharge from the genitals and pain while urinating.
These bacteria are scary because they’re becoming impervious to the first-line antibiotics used to treat them. In 2018, UK doctors reported finding a man with the first known case of gonorrhea that was highly resistant to the combination therapy used in most countries as standard treatment: the antibiotics ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Though the man’s gonorrhea was treatable with another antibiotic, the case confirmed experts’ worst fears. Other cases of super gonorrhea, as well as other highly resistant sexually transmitted infections, have been documented since.
A New Zealand wildlife centre is in mourning after the death of a rare white kiwi.
Manukura, the female North Island Brown Kiwi, which hatched in 2011 and gained national fame for her white feathers, died following surgery on Sunday.
Emily Court, Pukaha wildlife centre’s general manager, told New Zealand news website Stuff that staff noticed Manukura had not been eating and was losing weight in early December.
The kiwi was taken to Wildbase Hospital in Palmerston North and vets operated to remove an infertile egg that had become stuck inside her.
Manukura’s white feathers were produced by a partial loss of skin pigmentation – known as leucism, rather than albinism.
