Daniel Politi: "Iowa Woman Tells Police She Ran Over 14-Year-Old Girl Because She Was 'a Mexican'" (Slate)
The 14-year-old girl had been struck shortly before 5 p.m. on her way to Indian Hills Jr. High School. Even though she was severely injured, the driver did not stop, and law enforcement officials asked for the public's help in identifying the driver. While police were talking to [Nicole Marie Poole] Franklin, "she not only admitted to being the driver of the car that struck this girl, but also that she had done so intentionally. Franklin told investigators that she ran the girl over because she was, in her words, 'a Mexican.'
For a long time I knew it was Christmas when Darlene Love performed "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" every year on the final new episode before Christmas of Late Night with David Letterman (NBC) and Late Show with David Letterman (CBS). How many years did this annual tradition survive?
A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

Alan J answered:
Four. The Ghost of Jacob Marley, and the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
mj replied:
If one counts Marley
The total is four.
Dave responded:
Four. Scrooge's dead partner, Jacob Marley, Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. For years after publication, Charles Dickens read "A Christmas Carol" aloud in public performances, and the fees he earned somewhat made up for the small amount of money he earned from the book.
Photos: I read that the best film or TV adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" is the 1951 film starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge. Scrooge is warned by Marley, chained to the riches he lusted for in life, that Scrooge would be visited by 3 spirits | the pre-visit Scrooge | after his night with the spirits Scrooge was transformed into a kind man | He who shall not be named

I'm thinking it's 4: Jacob Marley, telling Ebenezer that 3 more spirits would show up (Christmases past, present and future). I might be off; haven't watched a version of that movie for a few years.

Barbara, of Peppy Tech fame answered:
The answer is four. First the ghost of Jacob Marley visits Scrooge. After that, the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come visit Scrooge.
Happy Holidays!
Dave in Tucson responded:
Ebeneezer Scrooge was visited by three spirits. The ghosts of Christmas
Past, Present & Future. Seem to remember the Mad Magazine version ended
with Scrooge being visited the following year by three conservative ghosts.
Billy in Cypress U$A replied:
Four: Jacob Marley ghost, Christmas past spirit, Christmas present spirit, Christmas future spirit.

Actress Drew Barrymore comes from two fine, well-loved theatrical families: the Drews and the Barrymores. John Drew's sister, Georgie, married Maurice Barrymore, and they produced three children: Ethel, Lionel, and John Barrymore. All of them became famous actors. In his autobiography, My Years on the Stage, John Drew tells of his niece, Ethel Barrymore, appearing in an important role on the stage for the first time. She was nervous, and because she was nervous, she was inaudible. A member of the audience called out to her, "Speak up, Ethel. You're all right. The Drews is all good actors."
In the 1930s, Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers were subjected to a noisy audience in the Middle West. Mr. Shawn stopped the performance and gave the audience hell, saying, "I have danced before the cowboys of Texas and the hillbillies of North Carolina, and I've never been subjected before to such a rude audience as this." After Mr. Shawn had given the audience hell, the performance continued, and Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers were given an ovation.
Henry Rowley Bishop wrote the opera Aladdin in competition with Carl Maria von Weber's Oberon. Unfortunately, his "Hunting Chorus" was very similar to Weber's "Hunter's Chorus." When the audience heard Bishop's "Hunting Chorus" at the premiere of Aladdin, they derisively whistled Weber's "Hunter's Chorus."
Some musicians play from memory as a way to impress the audience, but perhaps the audience ought not to be impressed. One violinist memorized the Kreutzer, intending to play it from memory, but he insisted that the pianist use a score so that he could look over the pianist's shoulder at the score if necessary.
Gustave Mahler sat in the audience at the first performance of Arnold Schoenberg's String Quartet No. 1 in D Minor. The audience disliked it, and Mr. Mahler asked a man near him to stop hissing. The man replied, "There's no need to get excited. I hiss Mahler, too."
When ballerina and actress Ida Rubinstein performed at the Opera Paris, she would say words of dialogue on stage-words such as "O๙ suis-je?" ("Where am I?") Of course, sometimes someone in the audience would answer, "ภ l'Op้ra de Paris!"

After Chilean author Isabel Allende's first book, The House of the Spirits, was published, her agent, Carmen Balcells, threw a party for her in Madrid, Spain. Many Spanish literary celebrities attended the party, and she was bashful. How to solve the problem? Actually, she didn't solve it-she avoided it. She admitted, "I was so frightened I spent a good part of the evening hiding in the bathroom." As you would expect, she began reading at a very young age. When she finished reading Tolstoy's massive War and Peace, her uncle gave her a doll. Her family encouraged her to be creative. For example, her mother allowed her to paint murals on her bedroom walls. (Later, when she was able to drive, she painted flowers on her car. For a while, she had a job translating into Spanish romance novels that had been written in English. However, because she was a feminist, she changed the heroine's dialogue from insipid to intelligent, and she changed the endings so that the heroine became independent and did not need a hero. She got fired. In her own life, she found romance. San Francisco lawyer William Gordon spoke fluent Spanish and met her and asked her to go on a date. After they had had one date, he drove her to the airport, and she asked him if he loved her. She says, "Poor guy, he almost drove off the road. He had to pull over, and he said, 'What are you talking about? We just met.'" She responded by writing a contract and sending it to him. The contract said that they could have a relationship on two conditions: 1) He could date no one but her, and 2) She could redecorate his house. He agreed. By the way, on 17 July 1988, they married.

Lizzo is still riding high after her Saturday Night Live debut and she isn't going to let anyone bring her down. The "Good as Hell" singer clapped back at Dr. Boyce Atkins after his tweet about her popularity sparked an online debate. Atkins, an author, political analyst and social commentator, tweeted that the eight-time Grammy-nominated singer is only popular because of America's "obesity epidemic."
Atkins followed that up Sunday with a critique of her SNL performance. He wrote how watching Lizzo sing "about the joys of being fat and raunchy makes me think of slaves performing for massa and his friends on the plantation."
By Monday, the 31-year-old "Truth Hurts" singer had enough.
"I'm popular because I write good songs and I'm talented and perform high energy hour and a half shows filled with love," she replied, quipping, "Here's the attention you ordered."
Many people came to Lizzo's defense after Atkins's initial tweet, pointing out how there is no debate like this over male stars and their weight.
It's difficult not to look at Disney's record-breaking year, securing eight of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2019 domestically and its impressive entrance into streaming with Disney+, without whispering to yourself "maybe Martin Scorsese had a point."
Disney's new record follows the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film grossed $175.5 million domestically in its opening weekend, just skirting past Universal Pictures' critically acclaimed horror film, Us, which grossed $175.05 million total domestically. Although Rise of Skywalker is currently the 10th highest-grossing movie in 2019 in the United States, that's expected to change as more people go out to watch the film in the coming days.
Glancing at Disney's releases this year yields an unprecedented collection of guaranteed hits. Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home (Marvel Studios and Disney co-produced the film with Sony, but Marvel Studios had full creative control) brought an end the Infinity Saga. Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2 were highly anticipated next installments in adored franchises. Aladdin and The Lion King were remakes of some of Disney's most popular '90s animated films, and The Rise of Skywalker is a Star Wars movie. It works out to more than $10 billion in global revenue.
The list reads like an algorithm spewed out movies people would pay $20 to watch. It also epitomizes Disney's decade-long strategy. Everything belongs to a franchise, or is designed to potentially start a franchise. Even Frozen, released as a standalone movie in 2013 with a fully contained story, was brought back for a sequel and a series of smaller spinoffs because the demand was there. Plus, merchandise sales were through the roof.
Everything is going according to plan for the House of Mouse. Disney began the decade with two key purchases: Marvel Entertainment in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012. The combined more than $8 billion investment has exceedingly paid off for Disney; Marvel Studios has made more than $28 billion at the box office alone, while Star Wars is the centerpiece of Disney's future, Disney+. The goal was to build out franchises Disney could consistently use and build worlds around.
Americans have a lot of opinions on where they think their rudest residents hail from.
Stereotypes - or sports rivalries - often color these assumptions.
In October and November, Insider conducted a survey of more than 2,000 American adults, asking them to choose the five rudest cities in the US from a list of the 50 biggest cities.
The rudest city in America, according to the survey, is New York City. It was rated rude by 34.3% of respondents, which was almost twice as much as the next highest city on the list.
Patients with breast cancer who use supplements during chemotherapy may be at an increased risk of recurrence and death, a new study suggests.
Use of dietary supplements that boost levels of antioxidants, iron, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids appeared to lower the effectiveness of chemotherapy, researchers report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
"From this study and others in the literature, it seems that it may not be wise to take supplements during chemotherapy," said Christine Ambrosone, chair of cancer prevention and control, and senior vice president for population sciences at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.
"It's thought that antioxidants might interfere with the ability of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells," Ambrosone explained. "One way chemotherapy works is by generating lots of oxidative stress. The thinking is that antioxidants may block oxidative stress and make chemotherapy less effective."
To take a closer look at whether supplement use might impact chemotherapy's effectiveness, Ambrosone and colleagues analyzed data from the Diet, Exercise, Lifestyle and Cancer Prognosis study, which was piggybacked onto a trial designed to determine the best dose and schedule of chemotherapy drugs.
The Pentagon is advising members of the military not to use consumer DNA kits, saying the information collected by private companies could pose a security risk, according to a memo co-signed by the Defense Department's top intelligence official.
A growing number of companies like 23andMe and Ancestry sell testing kits that allow buyers to get a DNA profile by sending in a cheek swab or saliva sample. The DNA results provide consumers information on their ancestry, insights into possible medical risks and can even identify previously unknown family members.
The boom in popularity of such kits has raised ethical and legal issues, since some companies have shared this data with law enforcement or sold it to third parties. The Defense Department is now expressing its own concerns about these kits.
The memo - which says that some DNA kit companies have been targeting military personnel with discounts - appears to have been distributed widely within the Defense Department, though it has not previously been made public. The memo was obtained by Yahoo News.
The memo provides little details on how genetic profiles could endanger security, other than noting that potential "inaccuracies" in health information could pose a risk to military personnel, who are required to report medical issues. Most of the health reports provided by DNA companies typically pertain to medical risks, though, such as a predisposition to cancer, rather than diagnosing a condition.
The Asian giant hornet, a 2-inch menace that feasts on honeybees, has invaded Washington state. It might've migrated from Canada, where a colony was discovered nesting in the ground.
There's at least one Asian giant hornet, the largest pest of its kind, buzzing around Washington state, and it's scaring locals silly.
But it's not here to prick people -- it's much hungrier for honeybees.
A resident found the nearly 2-inch hornet in Blaine, a city that sits on the US-Canada border, the Washington State Department of Agriculture reported.
It's unusual to see the Asian giant hornet in Washington for a few reasons. It's never been seen in the state before, for one -- it's native to east Asia. And it's typically dormant during the winter, opting to buzz about between July and October.
A primitive lizard that lived 309 million years ago has been unearthed in Canada with its tail wrapped round its young.
It is the earliest example uncovered of parental care in the animal kingdom, shedding light on the evolution of love.
The fossilised remains include a juvenile positioned belly-up behind the mother's hind limb and snugly encircled by her tail.
The pair died suddenly in a swamp-like forest in Nova Scotia, where the adult had built a den to raise its family, experts say. Their final embrace was captured in time.
The new species, which resembled today's monitor lizard, has been named Dendromaia unamakiensis - after the Greek words for "tree" and "caring mother".
